Signature Magazine,
this is our largest edition
to date and we are very
pleased to say the
highest distributed
property magazine for
all traditional estate
agencies in the
North East.
I started Signature by Mark Small five
years ago with a vision to create a corporate,
proactive and target-driven estate agency.
Drawing on my 17 years’ experience working
for some of the region’s most prestigious
property agents and co-ordinating 15
successful branches for the UK’s largest estate
agency, I wanted to combine upper-end style,
image and branding with an exceptional level
of customer service - and make this accessible
for everyone in the North East.
Since our launch in 2010, Signature has been
phenomenally successful. We have sold more
than £215 million worth of properties and have
consistently been the number one agent
for new properties to the market in many
areas. We are incredibly proud to have
grown from one branch in Whitley Bay to
further branches based in prime locations
across the North East which are well
integrated within the local community.

Q&A with Laura Emmerson
Laura Emmerson is the director
and project manager for Signature
Design & Construction. She has a
portfolio of projects that ranges from
exclusive hotels in London to full
church conversions. Recently she’s
worked on one particular project
very close to her heart – a converted
church hall that she calls her home.
Both of Laura’s recent Signature
projects will be featured in 25 Most
Beautiful Homes magazine.
Laura has managed to craft a
beautiful balance between a
fairly industrial look and a cosy,
warm home. Maintaining many of
the original features, she’s also
retained the character of this former
community space. She talked to
Signature about why she decided to
undertake the project, the hurdles of
converting a property and some of
the hidden gems she’s uncovered
along the way.

What inspired you to renovate
the church hall?
Were there any hidden gems
you uncovered at the hall?
I love a challenge! I saw something edgy and
unique about the building that really appealed
to me. I had previously worked on converting
an old Presbyterian church, which was beautiful
but because of its age and beauty, it was
difficult to incorporate some of the more
modern elements that are really fashionable at
the moment. With St Augustine’s Church Hall,
I knew I would have the freedom to go for a
much more industrial and modern look.
Oh, plenty! My favourite is probably an old
table tennis table I found in the toilets from
when the Scouts had been there. We now
use it as our dining table!
What challenges did you
encounter DURING the project?
There was nothing that directly affected me but
the church had issued a covenant stating that
the hall could only be used for a single dwelling
or, if used for commercial purposes, it could
only be a nursery.
How did the local residents
react to the conversion? Did
you encounter any negativity?
There was no negativity whatsoever - everyone
has been so receptive and welcoming. The
local residents were really happy to see that it
was being used as a home. People sometimes
pop in to say they used to come to the hall for
Scouts or use it when it was a dance hall!
Were there features you
lost but would have likeD
to Have kePt?
I think it’s really important when converting a
property, that you do keep some of the original
features. It gives the building character – a
story behind it. We’ve kept a lot of the original
window fixtures and fittings – same with a lot
of the doors. We’ve also converted part of the
old stage into one of the bedrooms.
The things we couldn’t keep were mostly for
practical reasons. I love exposed brick work
and, due to building restrictions, I couldn’t
have as much as I would have liked. When you
see a lot of exposed brick work in properties
they often have a lot of outside insulation or
cladding, or they are just plain freezing!

What advice would you give
to someone who wanted to
undertake a similar project?
It can be very hard work and not half as
glamorous as it looks on the TV. Saying that,
if you love it, it never seems like hard work.
One key piece of advice I’d give is to make
sure you always have a contingency budget.
Something will always come up that takes
you by surprise, so it’s important to be
prepared for that.
What are some of the upcoming
projects for signature Design
and Construction?
Some of the work we do isn’t necessarily as
glamorous as a full conversion, but it’s just as
important. Work like damp-proofing - things
that need done and make a big difference to
the client.
However, we’re currently working on converting
a stunning, old 1830’s house in Ponteland. It has
a funny series of extensions at the back, which
we’re turning into a beautiful open plan kitchen
and living area. The other day I went shopping
with the client for kitchens, which was great
fun. At Signature we do spend a great deal of
time with each of our clients and ensure that
they get a really bespoke service but on a
reasonable budget.

2016 is all about ‘bringing the outdoors

Hand-made products from natural materials
are a dominant trend. Think natural
products and textures; handwoven products

7. PINKS
Don’t be afraid to try a blue: go for softer
shades such as a midnight indigo, denims
or pastel blues to add a splash of colour

walls, why not opt for some soft furnishings?
Pillows or throws in navy or duck-egg
shades are an easy way to add colour to a
blank canvas.

Scandinavian influence continues to flourish

Gold made a big come-back in 2015 and
it seems it is here to stay! However, softer

A more daring trend to suit the adventurous
types; bring your home into 2016 with
some geometric accents in bright colours.

artefacts under bell jars – these little
‘historical’ touches are an easy way to

Botanical specimens, tropical birds and
jungle-themed fabrics will be everywhere in
2016. Brighten up any room with a couple
of bright throw-cushions in these prints or

trends, sustainability is the buzz word for

summer collected the best results since league tables began.
87% of students achieved a total of 5 or more A*- C grades with 80% achieving 5 or more
A*- C grades including English and Maths, the highest of all the schools in North Tyneside.
The number of A* grades went up by 4% to 12% and A grades up to 22% meaning that 34%
of grades were right at the top end. Two thirds of all grades were A* - B. A huge 90% of a
year group of 350 students achieved A*- C in English Language and 87% achieved A*- C in
Maths. Science results were equally impressive with 87% achieving at least two A*- C grades.
Students arrived at school to collect their
results with an air of excitement and
anticipation. Alice Bull was delighted with
her 10 A*s and 1 A. “I was hoping to do well
but I was surprised by some of my grades
so I’m really happy. I am going to stay on at
Whitley Bay High School Sixth Form to study

Maths and I hope to go to Cambridge University
to read Natural Sciences.”

Michelin-starred chef Richard Allen joined The Orangery
at Rockliffe Hall as executive head chef in January 2015.
Prior to that, he worked as an executive chef at Michelinstarred Tassili restaurant at the 5* Grand Jersey Hotel.
He has held three AA Rosettes for eight years and holds
the Cateys’ Head Chef of the Year 2012 and the Craft

What is your
signature dish?
What’s your favourite
meal to cook at home?
That’s a tough question because I consider all
of them my signature dishes! If I had to choose
I would say the sea trout with oysters and
caviar. The surroundings of Rockliffe Hall and
being so close to the sea were my inspiration
for this dish so I think it’s quite important.
When I’m at home with my family, we love to make a
good curry. It’s difficult to get one sometimes and it’s
easy to do something a bit different with them when
you make them at home.

Which local suppliers have you worked with?
I’ve been lucky to work with lots of established chefs

I’m a big believer in getting the best possible
produce. We often get fish from day boats,

pleasure?
Chocolate. I absolutely love chocolate and eat
it every single day. Nothing really beats a really good
quality dark chocolate.

When we moved from Jersey, I brought
my whole team over with me so we are
like a family. I enjoy watching people learn
and change. For example, my colleague
Gary Duffy started with us when he was

Who is your favourite
celebrity chef?
I really like Simon Rogan. His flagship restaurant
is L’Enclume in Cumbria and he uses a lot of
produce he farms and forages himself. Ronnie
Emborg, is a slightly less well-known chef from
Denmark who introduced the ‘Sensory Kitchen’.
I really admire both of them because of their
very natural stance on food.

Class - you know it when you see it. Whether it’s a
classic car or a vintage handbag, certain icons have
stood the test of time. The world of wine too has its own
fine and rare objects of desire. The difference is that you
can take your prized Morgan to the country roads on a
regular Sunday morning run or wear that antique Rolex
time after time, but with wine you know it when you
taste it and once you have pulled the cork on that 2000
Chateau Lafite then the moment is gone too soon. The
memory may live on but the wine is no more. So how
can we treat ourselves to a taste of affordable luxury in
the same way as we might occasionally enjoy our other
indulgences?
In 1855, Paris hosted The Grand Exposition and Emperor
Napoleon III instructed the merchants of Bordeaux to
draw up a list of their finest wines. This ‘Classification
of 1855’ ranked wines from First Growth to Fifth
Growth on the basis of which wines had consistently
fetched the highest prices. Remarkably this ranking has
largely stood the test of time. The four wines that were
originally ranked as First Growths are still considered
the best wines and fetch the highest prices. The 2000
Lafite, for example, costs around £1,000 per bottle.
Over the last 30 years these Chateaux have developed
second wines which, if you believe the hype, allow the
consumer an opportunity to experience the house style
in a wine at a much lower price. Carruades de Lafite
2000, Chateau Lafite’s second wine, can be enjoyed
for less than £200 per bottle. These wines might not
exhibit all of the characteristics of the Grand Vin but
are more authentic than a replica Rolex purchased on a
beach in Thailand.

There are wines with a more recent price history and
reputation that would see them reclassified should
anyone ever dare to revisit the 1855 hierarchy. Chateau
Lynch Bages is classed as a Fifth Growth but has a
reputation and price, over £150 for the 2000, more akin
to a Second Growth whereas Chateau Durfort Vivens is
ranked as a Second Growth but with a price, at around
£40 for a bottle of the 2000, more consistent with a
Fifth Growth.
The French have an expression, “terroir”, that describes
the environmental and human factors that come
together to make a wine unique. There are of course
wineries that share many of these factors without
necessarily sharing the price tag of their illustrious
neighbours. Pop over the garden wall (almost) of
Chateau Lafite and you are amongst the wines of
Chateau Duhart Milon. Enjoying with Lafite similar
soil, topography, climate and indeed wine making team,
the wines of Duhart Milon are rightly lauded but can
be enjoyed at a fraction of the price (£60 for the 2000)
of the great Lafite. So although great wine may never
be a bargain, it can be affordable if you know where
to look.
