Alumni Basketball
Game January 1
A new tradition started last year is the
boys and girls alumni basketball
games. This fun event will be held
annually on the first Saturday in January. These games are scheduled on
Saturday, January 1, 2011 at
RHS. Girls alumni at 1 and boys
alumni at 2 p.m. Any former player is
invited to attend. This is a great way
to start each new year with a little exercise and an opportunity to visit with
friends and share stories of Red Devil
roundball past.

JOIN HALL OF FAME
The RHS Hall of Fame has four new
members who were honored at the
halftime of this year‟s homecoming
game.
Ronnie Back, retired superintendent,
was honored for his 32 years of service to Russell schools, the last 12 as
Superintendent during which time the
district had significant growth and was
regarded as one of the best school
systems in the state
Pat Caniff, Class of „52, was recognized for his excellence while a student at RHS, including being part of
the undefeated football team, and his
civic leadership and community contributions.
Norman Menshouse, Class of „49, for
his service to the community as an
influential business leader and to the
Russell School Board for 21 years.
Alumni Float was popular at the Homecoming Parade.
Caniff and Roberts Retiring
from Russell Board of Education
Rob Caniff („71) and Rick Roberts
(„76) are retiring from serving on the
Russell Board of Education after over
ten years of service. They brought to
this leadership position a passion for
Russell schools and a strong sense
of tradition. During their tenure Russell schools experienced many
changes. They are to be commended
for their service.
Grady Walter, RHS Social Studies
teacher and coach for 33 years,
known for his versatility, winning ways
and personality.

Steve Holt has published his third book of poetry.
Matthew Haughton („96) has published his first
book Bee-Cursing Box, which will be released
Feb. 11 and available at accent-publishing.com/
books
Kayla Parsley („10) has started her college
basketball career at Ohio Valley University. Her
team is currently 2-0 and Kayla had a great
game in their win over Glenville State with over
23 minutes of playing time and scoring in double
figures with 10 points and adding 10 rebounds.
Kelsey Simpson („09) is enjoying success with
the Northern Kentucky basketball team. She is
averaging 18 minutes, 5 points, and 3 rebounds
per game.
Jessica Fortman („07) is a senior leader for the
University of Buffalo basketball team. She averages over 4 rebounds and 5 points per game and
has started every game for the past two years.

After a slow start, the Red
Devil football finished the season in a fine way as they advanced through the play-offs
before losing in the regional
final to Belfry. First Team AllArea were Trenton Fyffe,
Logan DeHoff, Joel Korzep,
Justin Davidson, Patrick Cooper. Honorable Mention were
Paul Spradlin, Zach Thompson, Jace Kibbey, Zach Bailey, and Tanner Locey

The boys soccer team defeated
Rowan Co 1-0 for the regional
championship before losing to
Highlands in the first round of
the state tournament.
The girls team continued its tradition of excellence before ending its season in the regional
tournament.
Jennifer Miller was named to
the all-area cross country team
while Emily Hanson and Brandon Yates were honorable
mention.
R EMEMBERING
I can recall three ladies that were
an inspiration to me while I was at
RHS. Ramona Callihan, Lorraine
Kendall and Janice Lebrun were
my science teachers. Science
was not one of my best subjects,
but these ladies made the topics
interesting to me. But above all,
these ladies showed a true concern for their students. Always

made a difference in my life. I hope
that I can convey to my students just a
glimmer of encouragement that Mrs.
Callihan, Mrs. Kendall, and Mrs. Lebrun had shown me many years

A LUMNI S POTLIGHT —W HERE
A 1998 RHS graduate, Krishnan Unnikrishnan is
a Harvard graduate in Biochemistry and Modern
Technology and a USC MFA film student. After
Harvard he lived in India for two years, where he
was awarded the Indicorps Fellowship to write
and direct a musical with underprivileged children from the slums of Mumbai. He has created
and been involved in many projects aligned with
his personal passions for intellectual exchange,
personal service and celebration of diversity,
ARE THEY NOW
including “The American Tragedy
of Sept. 11, 2001: What Will We
Do?” (panel talks to encourage
discussions and foster understanding at Harvard University).
As a filmmaker and performer,
Krishnan enjoys telling stories
about both India and America, and
will continue to do so through the
emerging international film aesthetic.
