Senior Recognition
Once again, Monongalia County 4-H graduating seniors were recognized for the hard work that
they have put into 4-H, their school work, and extracurricular activities at recent high school
awards programs. Ashley Rackley, Renee Brock, (UHS), Wesley Roberts, Maggie DiFazio,
(MHS), Kota Simpson, and Chloe Corder (Clay Battelle) were each provided with 4-H honor
cords. They filled out a paper outlining the 4-H activities they have completed over the past
year and each qualified to receive the honor cords. In addition, Renee Brock, Wesley Roberts,
and Chloe Corder were awarded with $250 scholarships to use toward college. They each
completed a essay and were selected to receive the scholarship. These awards were provided
by the Monongalia County 4-H Leaders Association. We congratulate all of our 4-H seniors for
all of their hard work and wish them the best of luck in the future. We are so proud of all of your
accomplishments!

Monongalia County 4-H Today
Kids Day on High Street
Monongalia County 4-H will again be participating in Kids Day on High Street,
which will be held July 16, 2016 from 10:00am to 2:00pm. The Cheat Lake Sailors 4-H
Club will again be sponsoring the event, but are requesting volunteers from all 4-H
clubs to ensure that the day runs smoothly. We will need lots of help!
There will be two shifts: 9:30am– Noon and Noon-2:30pm. Over the past
several years, we have actually ran out of supplies before the end of the day. We will
be making sand art necklaces again, which is always one of the most popular items at
Kids Day on High Street.
Please consider volunteering for the event. If you would like additional
information or would like to sign-up to volunteer, please contact Bobbie Hawkins at [email protected] or Becca
at 304-291-7201.
Outstanding 4-H All Star
Congratulations to Monongalia County’s 2016 Outstanding 4-H All Star,
Courtney Spears. Courtney was nominated for the hard work she put into
clearing up the All Star bank account after volunteering to serve as the
organization’s treasurer. She is a hard working 4-H young adult who has been
involved in the program since she was very young. She now uses her talents to
serve as a role model to younger youth.
Upcoming Judging Contests
Courtney Spears, Monongalia County’s 2016 All Star of the
Year is pictured above with her family during the 2015
Rush Run.
If you have an interest in learning about 4-H judging, please contact Mary or H.R. in the Extension
Office. You can compete as a junior or senior team or as an individual. Judging provides the opportunity to learn decision making skills relative to the area of judging, in which the youth is participating.
The State 4-H Judging Day will be held on July 14, 2016 at the WVU Livestock Farm and WVU’s
Evansdale Campus in Morgantown, WV. The day will encompass Livestock Judging and Land Judging/ Homesite Evaluation (The Horticulture Judging Contest will be held on September 8). Registration for these contests is due July 1.
WV State Fair Exhibits
Exhibit Information for all Fairs
As in past years, Monongalia County will be sending last year’s
project exhibits to the State Fair. If you won a purple ribbon or
Best of Show on your project exhibit at the Mon. Co. Fair last
year, consider sending it on to the State Fair (just the exhibit,
not the project book). If you would like to send your exhibit from
last year, please drop it off by August 2, 2016 to the Extension
Office. If you have any questions, please call us.
No matter what fair you are exhibiting at, please use your best
judgment when putting together your exhibit. Refrain from using
glass or breakable items. The Monongalia County 4-H Program
and WVU Extension Service will not be responsible for any
broken or lost items at any Fair. If you are struggling to
determine what to exhibit, please contact the office and we will
assist with deciding what your exhibit should be. In addition,
please bring your exhibit to the fair exactly the way you want it
to be displayed. Remember– this is your project, so make it
look like you want it to look. In order for a 4-H project to be
complete, we will need a completed book, activity record, and
exhibit (in the case of livestock projects, we will also need your
record guide). We reserve the right to throw food, vegetable, or
other perishable project exhibits away, if necessary.

will have the opportunity to sell their animals at both the Mon. Co. 4-H and FFA Show and Sale in Wadestown, which will be held
August 27 (specific show dates will be included in YOUR packet) and the Mon. Co. Fair 4-H and FFA Livestock Auction, which will
be held on August 6. If you have any questions, please contact Becca at 304-291-7201.
It’s Fair Time in Monongalia County
Battelle District Fair
Clay District Fair
The Battelle District Fair will be held the week of July 11-16.
4-H members will have the opportunity to show 4-H project
exhibits and livestock during the fair. For information regarding
animal and exhibit check-in, please contact your 4-H club
leader. 4-H exhibits will be gathered and brought to the Mon.
Co. Fair for display. Food displays will not be kept.
The Clay District Fair will be held August 16-20. For
information regarding animal and exhibit check-in, please
contact your 4-H club leader. All the 4-H projects including the
Cloverbud exhibits should be checked in and shown at the
Monongalia County Fair. Projects (with the exception of food
exhibits) will be transported for display to the Clay District Fair.
Monongalia County Fair
The Monongalia County Fair will be held the week of August 1-6 at Mylan Park. 4-H members will have the opportunity to
display project exhibits, as well as show their livestock project animals. 4-H project still exhibits must be checked into the fair on
Monday, August 1 from 11:00am– 6:00pm or can be delivered to the Ext. Off. the week of July 25th. 4-H livestock animals must be
checked in on Monday, August 1 from 6:00-10:00pm. If you would like specific details regarding dates and times of livestock shows
and events that will be held during the fair, please visit http://moncountyfair.org.
Another important part of the fair will be volunteering to assist with project sitting. We are hoping that clubs will volunteer for
the following time slots: Tuesday, August 2– shift 1– 5:00-7:30pm and shift 2– 7:30– 10:00pm, Saturday, August 6– shift 1–
12:00-2:00pm and shift 2– 2:00-4:00pm.. Each club should sign-up to assist with project sitting during one of the above shifts so that
members, parents, and volunteers will be on hand to help answer 4-H questions, as well as be sure that projects are secure and safe.
Club members and volunteers who sign-up to project sit will receive a free pass into the fair for the day that they volunteer. Please
call the office to volunteer.
4-H exhibit pick-up will occur on the closing night of the fair beginning at 9:00pm. Members and leaders please understand
that you WILL NOT receive a free pass to pick-up exhibits that evening. All exhibits that are not picked up on Saturday night will be
boxed by club and taken to the Extension Office for pick-up the week of August 8-12.The club leaders will be given the projects, so
please pick-up exhibits from your club leaders.
Last year, we were lacking in the area of volunteers and really need help. It is unfair to expect the same people to project sit
the entire time they are there. Please plan to volunteer.
