WEEK
RECAP WITH JAN ARNOLD
Dear Pros,
SPRING/SUMMER 2014 A SEASON WHERE ‘FASHION MEETS ART.’
Painting nails is one thing, creating true ART
is quite a different thing. This fashion season
represented a quiet but powerful shift for
Team CND and our partner designers, where
true collaboration, new technology and
elevated thinking took the design of nails from
art…to FINE ART! ‘Nail art’ has a connotation
of humor and frivolity but the new standard
is precious, calculated and architecturally
refined.
In London we worked with award-winning
designer Michael van der Ham, whose fabric
is a study in couturier creativity and old
world craftsmanship. The intricate weaves of
breathtakingly beautiful patterns cut into day
dresses transcend trend. Michael understands
the need for painterly nails that add to the
complexity of the story for his modern muse.
Colors from our new Spring Open Road collection are in
soft-focus and placed against a dark backdrop for creative contrast.
In NYC there was a calling for all BLONDS with a collection of both theatrical and
wearable avante garde designs that was out of this world with futuristic references
accenting the elevated art. Nails were precious jewels from another universe.
Backstage was a carefully curated ‘art show’ of tiny master pieces, each created
for a unique look. Colors from the summer Paradise collection are showcased with
fantastical reference to woman, as ‘exotic bird’.
We pay homage to the elite Team of Artisans
in the CND Design Lab whose sense of style and
refinement has once again set a new standard
for the fashion world.

THE MUSES CALL, AND MAKE
THEMSELVES HEARD IN NEW WAYS.
SPRING AND SUMMER 2014 PORTRAY
THE NAIL AS THE CANVAS
OF CREATIVITY.
There’s a hush when we enter an
art gallery. Stepping over the
threshold ushers us into a rarified,
nearly-silent world. We must take a
ticket and wear a badge. Uniformed
guardians patrol the creations on
display. And when we lean across
the velvet rope to get a closer
look, we are warned not to touch.
We hold our breath.
These barriers vanish when we wear the nail
as art, and as the ultimate accessory. Nails
are an art-form which knows no gatekeeper.
Immediate, instant gratification in a nail
that’s literally dreamed, imagined, sculpted,
painted, brushed and bejeweled. This Spring
and Summer, immerse yourself in the surface of
a shimmering nail which evokes the lily-ponds
of a genteel French Impressionist, or choose an
edgy nail with a classic cartoon’s punch of pop.
Go poetic in florals, or take feathered flight into
a reality of your own making. You are your own
masterpiece.
Behind the scenes at the CND DESIGN LAB
“IS IT POSSIBLE TO REALLY
PUSH THE ENVELOPE AND GO WILD?
OF COURSE IT IS.
IT’S WHAT WE DO HERE.”
-Jan Arnold, Founder,
ALL LIGHT IS VIBRATION,
A CONCEPT THAT THE IMPRESSIONISTS
UNDERSTOOD INSTINCTIVELY.
SMUDGES AND DABS OF
COLOR TAKE MAGICAL SHAPE
ON THIS NAIL.
This romantic bouquet of Spring blooms begins with a
dark opaque nail. The blossom-like bursts of color are
first applied to a clear acetate overlay, which is then adhered to the still-wet nail, like a decal.

TEAL-BLACK
A SWIRL OF TEAL AND BLACK IS
SENSUOUS YET STATELY, LIKE THE
MARBLE TOP OF AN ANTIQUE WRITING
DESK, OR HANDCRAFTED END-PAPERS
IN A KEEPSAKE BOOK.
Great art evoke emotion, with forms which may not be
logical. We respond with our senses and our skin. This
teal and black marbled nail suggests racing clouds, and
the caress of sea-waves.
POPPED FROM THE PAGES OF
THE FUNNY-PAPERS, A CRISP BLACK
OUTLINE AND BRIGHT PIGMENTS
MAKE THIS FREE-SPIRITED NAIL
AN EYE-OPENER.
INSPIRED BY THE ALLURE
OF VINTAGE LINGERIE. LIKE THE
FEMININE FORM ITSELF, A NAIL
DRESSED IN SHEER LAYERS
IS MORE PROVOCATIVE THAN
GOING BARE.

INTIMATES
The cling of a gossamer chemise, transparent
by daylight, iridescent by moonlight. Touched
with the glint of cut glass and the glow of
pearlescence, this nail is fresh—both innocent
and frisky.
The change of seasons invites us to brighten
and lighten up with nails that give us an
eyeful of our favorite animated characters. This
inquisitive Tweety-bird eye will get your hands
a second look all summer long.

Light and shadows morph across the sky and our skin.
These intricately textured nails suggest the mystery
behind all great art. A sense of wonder beneath the
painterly surface. We suggest keeping this romantic
nail modern with a casual length and shape.
These nails created as part
of the Michael van der Ham
Spring/Summer 2014 collections
simultaneously suggest both outer
and inner mysteries, seen through
a telescope or a microscope.
The spackled and sponged
finishes could be the surface
of the moon, or the hidden
complex network of nerve-endings,
firing messages to the brain.

Plumes of ostrich and marabou add giddy
glamour to everything from a ball gown to a
satin boudoir slipper. And who knows: if your
flock of rare birds passes overhead, you may
have to migrate, moult, or just take off.
