PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE
Kevin has been doing a fantastic job of arranging and participating in field trips this year.
Currently he is in Nevada at Crystal Peak looking for Quartz crystals (I think). From reports of members
who met him in Oregon at the Prineville POW WOW, he has led them to many wonderful places for fun
and digging. However, these trips have been a rather long distance away quite a few members were able
to enjoy in the fun.
Camp Paradise is coming up in a few weeks and the Board has decided to sponsor a scholarship
for one week at the event. The first week at Camp Paradise has already been booked up so the
scholarship is for the second week, August 31 through September 5. The scholarship is only for those
who have never been to the classes and must be used by the recipient. It cannot be sold, bartered or
given to another person. I have copies of the application so contact me for one. The drawing will be held
at the August 3 general meeting. A position has been reserved in the event that if the class fills we still
have an opening for the scholarship winner.
I am looking forward to going to the event for the first time, though not as a student but to teach
lapidary. Depending on the student's experience I will be teaching beginning lapidary and some
advanced techniques such as making doublets and triplets, small marble sized spheres and polishing
geode halves and slabs. I will be bringing my two Genies, an 8" belt sander and one of my carpet covered
polishing wheels. I have just finished building the last two machines for the class. I will also be doing
some programs on the Agate/Jasper Index, stone tools, and rock gripping and such. I am expecting to
have a lot of fun teaching- one of my favorite activities - and on meeting new people, some old friends
and other rock enthusiasts.
Even though the summer is full swing, please be careful on your rock hounding adventures so
you come back fully armed with many rocks (pun intended).
Have a safe summer and go on many field trips! I want to hear your stories about your travels!
The Current List of Goals for 2014
1. Establish some guidelines to make the General Meetings more fun for all of us.
2. Get more involved with the field trip planning, execution, participation, etc.
3. Get the Long Range Planning Committee back into active work on what the society
more successful in the future.
4. Get the Policies and Procedures document developed, approved and implemented.

Please keep Minnie Elam in your thoughts and prayers as she has been in and out of the hospital
recently. She especially needs her health and strength so she can hold her brand new Greatgreat-grandbaby. Get well soon Minnie.
CONGRATULATIONS to Heather Elam on the birth of her child!
Joe Smink will be moving to an assisted living facility soon. He more than likely will not be able to
do much with the club; however, he would love to continue to get correspondence. His new mailing
is address to 1414 Lorainne Ave., Modesto, CA 95350.
Congratulations to Andrew Mendoza for being honored by the City of Ceres for volunteering at
youth camps and at the concerts in the park. MLMS is proud of you!
Congratulations to Robert Eltringham. His Blood Eagle Mead won second place and his Old
Babylon Mead won first place at the Stanislaus County Fair competition. Way to go, Robert!
Please keep Phyllis Kyle in your thoughts and prayers. She fell and broke her ankle and had to
undergo surgery. She is in good spirits and thankful she did it to her left foot so she can still drive!
We are wishing you a speedy recovery.
For the rest of our membership, stay safe, cool hydrated and healthy as it is getting hot and humid
in the Valley.
Best wishes to all!

HOW TO CUT OBSIDIAN
Gold Sheen: To get the most out of mahogany gold sheen obsidian,
examine the stone to identify the banding and saw with the bands, as if
they were a stack of plates that you want to unstack. Watch for
“Fire Spots” in gold sheen. It is not plentiful but opal-like colors do
sometimes occur in mahogany gold sheen.
Cc: mexico-obsidienne.com
Iridescent: There are two types of iridescent obsidian. In cutting both correctly, the orientation
of the color is most important. One type is banded and the color lies
in the bands. The other type is unbanded and the surface has to be chipped
to find the color. Additionally, the banded type will have several colors or
shades, while the unbanded will have only one. Cut the banded type
parallel to the bands to get the effect. To get rainbow effect, cut the stone
at an approximately 15-degree angle across the bands.
Cc: www.pinterest.com
Midnight Lace: Lace pattern obsidian should be cut across the
pattern that you desire to show.
Cc: midnight-lace-obsidian.com
Rainbow: Cut parallel to the flow layers. These can be seen
by examining fractured surfaces using an overhead lamp bulb.
They are not always straight; it may be necessary to turn the
stone slightly in the saw. Examine each slab set with either
water or oil to see if the correct angle has been obtained.

Field Trip News
Oregon is a Rockhound’s dream come true. Time is always short, however. So far, I've collected thunder eggs
(twice) at Lucky Strike Mine. Thunder eggs at the newly re-opened Friend's Ranch, under the operation of Lauren
Friend and his wife since Daryl Friend passed away. Petrified/agatized wood at Little Bear Creek, agatized limb
casts at Congleton Hollow and Dendrite Butte area (the "Paulina" commonly named areas). I also collected
Ochoco tube agate, near Prineville, obsidian at Glass Buttes, and sunstones at the Dust Devil Mine, near Plush.
As of this writing, we still have two days here at Lakeview to do sunstone collecting. I would love to do Hart Mtn
for a beautiful, and exceedingly rare, porcelain jasper and green moss agate. Maybe I'll wait until I'm in better
shape and it's cooler as the hunting is in the 7,000 to 9,000 foot elevations, way above the valley floor, and no
roads to speak of. It is in the Antelope Preserve and very beautiful country, high dessert, sagebrush, large shallow
lakes...
We head to Peterson Mtn, Hallelujah Jct, on the CA/NV borderline, for quartz xls in a couple days, and I am
expecting a few folks to join me, there. I will be in the Bordertown RV Park and leaving the 26th. Reno and
vicinity is pretty much booked solid due to their famous Hot August Nights even that has something to do with
fancy cars, fast women, and fast living, either one, or all of those, I'm not too sure.
I will bring samples of what I have collected to the meeting in hopes of drumming up interest in even more of
you folks to come join me next summer, luck holding, up here in Oregon. We did not get all of the rocks, this
time, so have to come back for seconds.

Grinding and polishing obsidian: Approach your grinding wheel with the material at a slight
horizontal angle. If brought straight in, it may be a “shattering” experience as obsidian fractures
conchoidally, and this is a sure way to do it. Though obsidian is comparatively soft, it is still very
important to sand away all scratches before going to polish. Some people advise that wet sanding
should be done, since obsidian is heat sensitive and very brittle. For the final polish, felt with
cerium oxide is the choice. Keep the polishing wheel wet. A dry polish will result in blisters and
scratches. After the obsidian is sawed, be sure to bevel the edge on your fine grinding wheel to
keep it from flaking and chipping. Should you be faceting some particularly gemmy obsidian, try
cerium on Lucite-but keep it wet.
Safety: Wear goggles at all times. A small chip of obsidian can be close to transparent and if it
got into your eye, it could be very hard to seen even with a powerful magnifying glass. The sharp
edges of the chip may cut and damage the surface of your eye before you can get it removed.

scholarship. Chris has given a press release to the Modesto Bee stating that we have given seven scholarships. The board decided to
grant a $750 and a $500 scholarship for 2015 as a beginning standard.
PROPERTY MANAGER John Piazza: John has ordered an 8” saw blade and belts will be ordered. He has a request for number stamps
and/or engraver so he can stamp and/or engrave on the equipment. John says he will be having a rock sale July 12-13, 8 to 5 at his place.
HOUSE DIRECTOR Pat Rush: September meeting is a Pot Luck- please remind the members to come help in the kitchen. Bob Rush
will be asking for volunteers at each meeting to help in the kitchen to set out the food and to clean up after. We need help folding
perimeter tables, sweeping the floor and taking out trash.
POSTAL DIRECTOR Helga Feddersen: Not present. Becky Ray said she substituted for Helga and sent out the newsletters.
UNFINISHED BUSINESS: Jean Hayes class for juniors is full.
NEW BUSINESS: Mike Gibson has updated the functional use of equipment and will soon print and laminate for posting in the
classroom. We have been offered a booth at the Delta Gold Diggers show at the Mother Lode Fair Grounds in Sonora on August 23-24.
We need someone in charge of a raffle and the wheel of fortune at that show. Jerry Pettis has offered a gold nugget for the raffle and Bob
Rush offered to solder on a ring for a leather cord. Please E-Mail Bob Rush your ideas for priorities for the goals of a long range planning
committee. They would include a contingency plan for Paul’s Hall and for a classroom. Also for various ways we can educate people
about rocks and geology in the future. The Policy and procedure committee will meet in September to make a printed version of all our
policies and procedures for use at meetings. Motion was made by Jerry Pettis to announce at the meeting that there will be a drawing at
the August 3 meeting for a scholarship to Camp Paradise August 31 –September 5. There will be four names drawn, if the first person
cannot go, the second will receive the ticket and on down the line. The $390.00 scholarship will be nontransferable and for this 2014.
For information, call Bob Rush. Bud McMillin says there is a Barranca diamond polisher in the classroom and wonders if it could be
checked out to members of the club. He says that George has one and uses it frequently on large boulders in his yard. George may be
able to give a demonstration.
MEETING ADJOURNED: at 8:45 PM., Candy Wiegand motioned to adjourn the meeting and everyone else provided the second. Then
it was voted on and passed. Doris Buus, Secretary, respectfully submit the minutes of The Mother Lode Mineral Society of California.
