THANK YOU.
Thanks to all of you who give of your time, talent and treasure to the Y to strengthen our
community. You all have unique ideas and skills and the Y is grateful to every one of you:
• Those who COACH children can always be counted on to help with community events
because you care about your neighbors.
• Those who are CAMPAIGNERS and have a special way of reaching
out to tell the Y story and raise the funds to ensure programs are
available for all.
• Those who are on BOARDS or COMMITTEES and give your
valuable time and contribute new ideas and new energy the
Y connected to the community.
• Those who are STAFF and not only believe in but put into
practice our values of responsibility, caring, honesty
and respect.
• And those who are loyal MEMBERS and keep the Y family
and the community at large - vital, active and healthy.
We are grateful for the opportunity to work together
with you to make our community stronger.
A LETTER FROM OUR
CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER
Dear Y Members, Donors and Volunteers,
First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the entire mid-coast community for the
tremendous support you have shown the Penobscot Bay YMCA over the past year. Because
of this support, 2015 marked a time when the Y was able to celebrate our past and set service
records in the areas of members served and programs offered. More importantly, we could
ensure that everyone who needs the Y is afforded the opportunity to take advantage of our
services and facilities.
Some of 2015 highlights include:
• Celebrated our 100 year anniversary as an organization.
• Signed an operating agreement with City of Rockland to offer the recreational programs
to Rockland and Southern Knox County.
• Completed year one of operations at our new Rockland Harbor Branch.
As one of the largest social service organizations in our region, we are proud of:
• the developmental impact that our Early Learning Centers have on hundreds of children
and families each year.
• providing program opportunities like Heartwatch, LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA and the
Healthy Lifestyles Program to those who struggle with health challenges.
• the positive impact we have on youth by engaging them in prosocial environments such
as Youth Basketball, Swim Team and at the Teen Center.
FROM A TO Z...
YOU CAN MAKE GREAT THINGS HAPPEN.
ACCEPT YOUR BLESSINGS, CARE FOR
OTHERS, DELIGHT IN EXCELLENCE, HAVE FAITH
IN YOURSELF, GIVE HOPE, INSPIRE JOY, KEEP
LEARNING A PRIORITY, MAKE AN IMPACT,
EXPLORE NEW OPPORTUNITIES, PERSERVERE
ALWAYS, QUELL SORROW, REACH FOR THE
STARS, TREAT OTHERS WITH RESPECT AND
UNDERSTANDING, VALUE YOUR WELL-BEING
AND EXPECT YOUR Y’S ZEALOUS SUPPORT
THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY.
These community benefits would not be possible without the support of our loyal members,
generous donors, wonderful volunteers, government agencies, foundations like UMCC and our
partners within the business community. Through this generous support, we are able to offer
our services to those in our community most in need. For example:
• we provided 3305 individuals with memberships who could not otherwise afford it.
• 230 weeks of summer camp
• over $59,000 in Early Learning subsidies
• 194 Active Duty Military and unemployment memberships
As we reflect on 2015, we are humbled and privileged to have
stood with you through this historic year. We look to the future
with excitement to share our new vision with our community as
we serve more people and in more places. Through sound fiscal
management, responsible growth and program development in
response to community need, the Y will continue to provide
effective service to those in our area for the next 100 years.
We consider every one of you an important member of our
Y family.
Kind regards,
Troy Curtis
Chief Executive Officer
NURTURING THE
POTENTIAL OF EVERY
CHILD AND TEEN.
I wanted to extend my appreciation for the
fantastic Kinder Camp experience my son Colton
had at the Y. It was his first experience with a big
group of kids like this, since all of his preschool
time has been spent in a small, home-based
program. It was a perfect thing to get him
prepared for Kindergarten and has made the
transition quite smooth.
I was so impressed with the variety of activities
offered. Taking a huge group of 5 year olds on
long bus rides to so many places seems like a
daunting task, but it all went so smoothly, from
our perspective. The counselors seemed so eager
to engage with kids, even after long, tiring field
trips.
It was fun to see Colton grow in confidence and
excitement as the weeks progressed. Discipline
seemed to be handled in a very fair and proactive
way. Although Colton didn't have any incidents
(that I'm aware of) that needed to be dealt with,
he shared with me the different camp rules and
the consequences for not following them and
seemed to actually enjoy the structure and
clear expectations that made sense to everyone.
Chris did a fantastic job organizing everything and
Ryan made a very special impact on Colton with his
positive, enthusiastic energy. I know that pulling
together this many kids and activities is no easy
task, and the way it's been done at the Pen Bay
YMCA is truly impressive. We couldn't be
happier. Thank you! - Alison

IMPROVING THE
NATION’S HEALTH
& WELL-BEING.
I joined the Senior Stretch, Stretch
and Balance class in February 2014,
4 months after breaking my arm. I
wanted a form of exercise that
would be gentle but push me to
regain flexibility and strength. I was
unable to do yoga or play a raquet
sport because of the injury. After
one year of taking the Senior Stretch
class at the Y with Sandy Bodamer,
I have increased my range of motion
back to normal and regained muscular
strength and endurance. This one
hour work out three times a week,
without experiencing pain of any
sort, leaves me totally energized
for the rest of the day. - Amy

GIVING BACK AND
PROVIDING SUPPORT
TO OUR NEIGHBORS
I’m a survivor of non-Hodgkins lymphoma
Stage 4 of 13 years.
I’ve been a competitive athlete - from field
hockey, track, skiing, and showing horses
to name a few. My husband Herbie and I
live on Come Spring Farm where we were
raise Morgan horses, Bernese Mountain
Dogs, and Angus cattle. At 48, I received
my Masters of Science Degree in Nursing
while working a great full time job. At 49,
as female advisor for the Union Explorer
Troop, I hiked 100 miles at the Boy Scouts
of America Camp in Cimarron, NM.
However, health issues continued to pop up
and I realized something had to change.
I became semi-retired but still had a
“Bucket List” and wasn’t ready to let life
pass me by. Several years ago, when faced
with a total hysterectomy, I sadly thought
I would never ride my horse, Sportster,
again. It was at that time, that I discovered
the LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA Program.
I started strength and cardio training,
learned more about the benefits of yoga,
meditation and swimming. I attended
nutrition classes geared towards cancer
survival and found great conversation with
other cancer survivors. I’ve participated
in two Run Strong 5Ks and two Turkey Trot
5Ks. On Christmas Day this past year, I
rode Sportie with my step-daughter and her
horse. This summer, we are making plans to
do a two day ride at Acadia National Park.
I plan to continue in the program, as a
coach and mentor to others going through
cancer treatments. I am so thankful and
grateful to this program for giving me the
skills and courage to continue being an
active, contributing participant in my
mid-coast community. A big thank you
to Sandy, Theo, Meg, and Dan for your
encouragement in my journey with
lymphoma. I’m very grateful to the
LIVESTRONG® at the YMCA Program
‘for helping me be where I am today.
My “Bucket List” doesn’t quit!
- Vicki

“In August 2014, I enrolled my daughter, Alexandrea, age 4, in the
YMCA’s Childcare Program. My experience has been overwhelmingly
positive. She loves all of her teachers and classmates. The Before
Care Program at Lily Pond allows me to drop my daughter off at
6:45am Monday through Friday so I can catch the Islesboro ferry
to work. In addition, the Early Learning Program includes swim
lessons. While in the pool, they provide a one on one teacher for Al
which has helped her to feel confident and more secure in the pool.
Their support has provided a smooth transition for my daughter as
well as the opportunity for her to succeed. I can’t imagine her being
anywhere else but at the Penobscot Bay Y. We both love the Y! “

community to have access to our diverse programs and activities that meet their needs. By supporting
this campaign, you help guarantee that everyone, regardless of their circumstances or ability to pay, can
benefit from the Y's value-centered programs. During 2015, the Y returned $337,981 in mission
services to our neighbors in direct financial assistance.
