When does a musician become
an artist? The answer could be
when he or she doesn’t write or
perform to please anybody else
other than themselves.
This theory is evident in Kike
Perdomo’s latest studio project,
Roots. But before this gem of
an album is reviewed, here’s a
little history about Kike.
Born in Tenerife, he studied
music at the Conservatorio
Superior de Música de Tenerife and the Escuela de Luis
Vecchio, where he mastered the
flute and saxophone in addition
to learning complex harmonies
and improvising. After relocating to the United States and
graduating at the Berklee Col-
lege of Music in 1989 he began
his professional career, which
took him to places such as Mexico, Argentina, Chile, Germany,
Holland, the US, Norway, Denmark, Switzerland and Cuba.
Within Spain, he shared the
stage or studio with some of the
country’s greatest names such
Luz Casal, Joaquín Sabina and
Miguel Ros, and whilst overseas
he worked alongside some of
the world’s most established
jazz artists such as Bill Evans,
Chano Dominguez and Chuck
Loeb.
After producing some of
this island’s finest albums,
and then releasing a few of
his own works, he decided
to return to his, yes you’ve
guessed it: roots.
Each of the album’s seven
tracks has the essence of an
artist’s palette. Experimenting,
improvising and articulating
the tones of his saxophone,
it is overwhelmingly apparent
that his confidence matches
his pure talent.
If your journey into the world
of sophistication stops at
smooth jazz, then don’t venture any further because this
album will be too much for your
neurons to process. But within
the first few annotations Roots
will bring out ear-to-ear grins
from any true disciples of the
genre.
From the swinging first track
One-11 to Kike’s lusciously
sublime take on Cantaloupe, or
the funkily fused Never More,
Roots has all of the markings
of a classic, timeless jazz masterpiece. Made by one of this
island’s true musicians and
on sale around the world, this
album seems like a million
light years ahead of what so
many have come to accept as
‘Tenerife Disposable Entertainment’. Thankfully some things
are here to stay.

Ruts & La Isla Music
Dactah Chando
& the Binghiband
Reggae has proven to be a
powerful live music genre
which uplifts any event where
it features, and the reggae
scene in the Canary Islands
has become enormously popular over the past decade.
Located in the centre of Puerto
de La Cruz, the emblematic
Lago Martiánez is to host
the reggae festival, which is
organised with the collaboration of Yeray Fuentes Calle
13 Rec Sonido y Iluminacion, and with the sponsorship of Foreign Language
News, Heineken, WEB Energy
One Love: Tribute to Bob Marley
Drink, and Pepsi 0. Together
they are very proud to present
over eight hours of live music
and an exciting new festival
to the island.
Tenerife Concerts SL was
founded in July 2014, and
Fredy Vespremi and his business partner, Erik Rikkers,
have a clear focus and huge
ambition to make the company widely recognised and
bring as many top acts to
the Islands as possible. They
recently announced an online
club card initiative available
from the company’s website
that allows you to join for free
and take advantage of numerous benefits. All booking procedures are set up on the website too, meaning it’s possible
to browse for concerts, reserve
places, pay online and print
out your tickets without leaving the same webpage. “This
is a one-stop-shop that offers
the best live music shows at
affordable prices” Fredy said
of the new scheme that he
hopes will set Tenerife Concerts apart from the competitors and encourage the necessary growth to attract big
names to the island. “We want
to be a professional agency
that artists can put complete
faith in”, he said, pointing
to the perfect start with the
Earth, Wind & Fire Experience
concert in November last year,
and Parole, Parole, Parole:
The Mina Tribute in December 2014 and March this year
– concerts that were staged
at the Magma Art & Congress
Centre in Costa Adeje and the
Infanta Leonor Auditorium in
Los Cristianos.
