recognized CASSANDRA of
Minneapolis, returns to Toledo,
Ohio, for the instruction of a twoday intensive Middle Eastern
Dance seminar, hosted by Leyla,
creator of Raq the Casbah. Gala
show will be presented the
evening of Saturday, March 2nd;
both events will be held in the
Ballroom of The Grand Plaza

The Show
The Saturday evening cabaret Cirque autour du Monde will feature select talent from around the world-- performers range in
ethnicity from Greece to Asia, Russia to Senegal, and beyond, with performances in both dance and song from around the
globe. Leyla & Raq the Casbah will kick-off your world tour, followed by ALMA Drum & Dance, The Chinese Association
performance troupe, Lapis Lazuli, and many others. A true “circus” of entertainment, the evening will offer dazzling surprises
in the style of the classic amusement park midway, reminiscent of the iconic World Fairs of the early 1900’s, and promises to
be a whirlwind of delights! Two cash bars will be available to guests as well as complimentary h’ors d'oeuvres. Box office
and will-call, as well as shopping with Dahlal Internationale, open at 6 pm; doors open at 7pm; show from 8-10 pm; there will

saturday-Class 1: “Technique & Combinations”

Warm ups, technique, new moves, combinations and footwork. THEN...finger cymbals (zills)--All accompanied by a

live drummer. An immersion in immaculate execution of the basics, and the details of gracefulness and stylization.
saturday-class 2: “Focus on: Saidi”
!
No assaya (cane) needed! This course focuses on the Saidi rhythm, the standard variations of it, classic !movements
!
and technique specific to Southern (or “upper” Egypt) and how to react to the folkloric and cheerful Saidi segment(s)
!
within your piece of music.
Sunday-class 1: “Classic American Cabaret veil”
!
The Classic age of American nightclub belly dance and the intricate veil wraps and tucks, unwraps and unwinds, veil
!
moves, flourishes and “tricks”, and of course, graceful discards--for a professional and polished veil performance.
Sunday-class 2: “The Big Finish”
!
How to end your performance with a “wow!” and give your audience an intense and memorable finale. This course
!
will focus on the exciting crescendo of your performance: the rhythms that signal the close of a song, the
!
combinations and traveling steps to accompany it, and a few “tricks of the trade” to enhance your performance at
!
it’s most important point, and leave them wanting more!
