On the Northeast corner of Woodruff Ave
and Imperial Highway. Exit west off 605 at Imperial Highway. Follow the Adult School
signs. Our address is: 12340 Woodruff

2. Where can I park?
You can park in any of the marked parking
spots on campus. All parking is FREE!
3. How do I enroll in Adult School? 4 ways: • Online – register at www.das.edu
• Fax In – fill out an enrollment form from the back of the brochure and fax it to 562-940-6250.
•Mail In – fill out an enrollment form from the back of the brochure and mail to:

•Walk In – You may register in person with Cash, Check, Money Order, Visa or MasterCard. Come to our front office or report directly to your class.

4. When do I pay for the classes?
When you register:
•Online, fax or mail – you can pay with
Visa or MasterCard prior to the class starting.
•Walk In – you can pay for your class the first night in the classroom or you can come to the front office.
•You may register in person with Cash, Check, Money Order, Visa or MasterCard.
• Payment is due upon registration. Vocational programs require deposits at time of orientation/ registration.
5. How old do I have to be to take classes?
You must be an adult, which is any person
18 years or older. You may be a high
school student enrolled in the Downey
Unified School District with permission from
Downey, Warren or Columbus counselors
or resident of Downey attending another
high school with permission from your
counselor.
6. Do I need to buy books for my classes?
Downey Adult School has a bookstore in the main office where you can purchase the books for your classes.
7. Do you offer payment schedules?
Yes, we do for some of our career training
programs. Payment schedules are worked
out with the instructors.
8. Should I get my GED or
high school diploma?
We recommend that you schedule an
appointment with our academic counselor,
Brian Ofner, so we can help you make an
informed decision. Call Brian at
562-940-6232 to set up an appointment
today.

9. When are the Placement tests?
Placement tests are required for enrollment
in our High School Diploma and GED
preparation programs. Placement tests are
given Monday-Thursday, 9:00a.m-5:00p.m.
Fridays, 8:00a.m.-1:00p.m.
You do not need to make an appointment
for the test. There is no cost for the test.
Photo ID is required. Bring $45.00 to enroll
in your class.
10.General Traffic School Question? –
When do I pay, etc? Our Traffic Violator School is an 8-hour
class taught in English. The cost is $45
CASH or VISA/MASTERCARD, NO
CHECKS. Same-day registration is $55
CASH ONLY. Bring your valid driver’s
license, receipt and all paper work from the
court. All the above requirements apply to
the 12-hour Traffic School except the cost
is $75 CASH or VISA/MASTERCARD, NO
CHECKS and you will attend one full 8-hour
session and 4 hours of a second session.
11. Do you have senior discounts?
There is a $10 discount to students 55
years of age or older. The discount applies
to all State funded classes excluding
classes designated for seniors and traffic
school.
12. Do I need to buy my own (art)
supplies?
Most supplies are made available for
purchase in the class by the teacher or the
teacher will suggest locations where you
can purchase supplies.
13. How do I sign up for LVN?
Due to the overwhelming demand, we ask
all prospective LVN students to refer to our
website, www.das.edu. Click on “Classes”
then “Nursing and Allied Health”. Here you
will be able to register for one of our LVN
orientation/exam dates.
14. Do you have financial aid?
Federal financial aid is available on selected
career programs. Please call 562.940.6247

15. Do you have babysitting?
DAS offers babysitting in the morning from
8:20-12:30 for our day ESL students only.
16. Do you have security?
Downey Adult School has security both day
and night along with a police officer Monday
thru Friday. In addition, the campus is
monitored with a 24-hr surveillance system.
17. What programs qualify for Financial Aid?
Some programs qualify.

PHARMACY TECHNICIAN - from amoxicillin to zithromax
Students will learn the basic concepts of Pharmacology, knowledge of
practice settings, Standards and Ethics, State Board of Pharmacy Laws
and Regulations, basic pharmacy calculations, drug dosages, route and
forms, conversion tables, recordkeeping, drug manufacturing, packaging
and labeling of drug products. Students will be given hands-on experience
to perform in a live Pharmacy setting through their 120-hour externship
requirement to successfully complete the course and receive their
certificate.

CLINICAL DENTAL ASSISTANT FRONT AND BACK OFFICE
This program will prepare you in acquiring
entry-level positions as Clinical Dental
Assistants or Dental Biller Front Office
Coordinators. Students will learn the basic
skills needed to satisfy requirements in
starting a career in Dental Assisting. Learn
laboratory procedures such as exposing,
developing, mounting dental radiographs,
dental instrumentation, taking impressions,
mixing dental cements, four-handed
dentistry and chair side dental assisting
procedures.
Our Continuing Dental Education program
is approved by the Dental Board of
California and the Dental Assisting National
Board (DANB), from whom students will
receive Continuing Dental Education units.
Furthermore, students will learn career
preparation skills throughout the span of
the course. 240 hours of Clinical hands-on
Externship is required for each student who

With a focus on fashion and beauty, this 15

RESTORATIVE YOGA
Increase your flexibility, build strength

Emphasis is on building awareness of the

Calling ALL SENIOR CITIZENS!
You’ve taken lots of digital photographs, now
what are you going to do with them? Come
to this class and learn how to touch up your
photos, create collages, make an online
photo album and share your photos with
friends. This class will focus on a variety of
projects that will show you how to turn your
photos into works of art. This class is for
both beginners and for those with experience
using Photoshop Elements.
Through
hands-on projects students will gain a
working knowledge of Photoshop Elements’
toolbars, menus, palettes, layers, filters, etc.
Photoshop Elements is inexpensive digital
imaging software that you can purchase and
continue to work on your photo projects at
home

published in the brochure for fall,
winter, spring quarters except the
following:
A $10 discount to students 55 years of age
or older and DUSD employees and applies
to all State funded classes except classes
designed for seniors and Traffic School
classes. EXEMPT from Class Fees are:
1. Handicapped students in residential care or community facilities.

Class Refund Policy
• No refund without your receipt
• No refund after two weeks of class
start date
• No refunds on textbooks or uniforms
• Absolutely no CASH refunds
• DAS will deduct a 10% processing fee from all refunds.
• A refund will be issued within 4 weeks
of request
• All materials fees and books must be
paid for prior to the start of class.
PROFESSIONAL GROWTH
All classified employees of the Downey
Unified School District who wish to take
adult school classes for professional growth
credit need to obtain prior approval from
the Professional Growth Committee and
will receive a $10 discount. Contact the

ATTENDANCE
In order for an adult school class to qualify
for state funding, attendance at the first class
meeting is imperative. Regular attendance
is important. State funded classes which
average below 25 may be discontinued.
Being prompt and attending the entire
session will enable you to receive full credit
for the course. Please use sign-in sheets
when you arrive and leave. Any student
who has more than three consecutive
absences may be dropped. High school
diploma students must attend a minimum of
85% of the scheduled class hours in order to
be eligible for credit in a class.

UNIFORM COMPLAINT PROCEDURE

Complaints alleging unlawful discrimination
or failure to comply with state or federal
law in adult basic education, consolidated
aid programs, vocational education, child
care and development programs, child
nutrition programs and special education
programs should be made to the Adult
School Administration. Call (562) 9406200. Local civil law remedies, such as
local legal assistance agencies and private
legal counsel are also available and listed
in the phone book under Legal Services.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT
Sexual harassment of or by any employee
or of or by any student shall not be allowed.
Sexual harassment is prohibited by the
Downey Unified School District and may
result in disciplinary action to the offending
employee or student. Sexual harassment
means unwelcome sexual advances,
requests for sexual favors, and other verbal,
visual or physical conduct of a sexual
nature made by someone under any of the
conditions delineated in Ed Code 212.5.
TOBACCO FREE WORKSPACE
The Downey Unified School District Policy
prohibits smoking on all district campuses
and in district vehicles. Students and
employees are not allowed to smoke on
school grounds, parking lots, or in parked
vehicles.
PUBLICITY AND PHOTO RELEASE
As a student in the Downey Adult School,
you may be photographed or filmed for
campus or district (Downey Unified School
District) displays and for other publicity and
public relation purposes. Signature on the
registration form indicates your agreement
for these purposes. If you feel otherwise,
please submit a letter to the Adult School
Administration.

Education (CCAE) is comprised of
just under 4,000 members statewide.
CCAE is the largest professional
organization serving adult education
administrators, teachers, students
and classified personnel in California
and the ONLY organization that’s sole
purpose is to support adult education
at all levels.
