There’s more to reading together than just saying the
words. Try asking your student questions like these when
you read together.
Talk about the book
Is this a real story or a made- up story? How can you
tell? What can you tell by looking at the cover of a
book? Talk about the title, author, and pictures
about the story. Where is the top of the book?
Where’s the bottom? Point to each.
Talk about the words
Example: Valiant means brave. Can you tell who was valiant in the story? Can you think of people in other
books where were valiant?
Example: How many words can you think of that sound
the same as “doom” – room, broom, boom, etc?
Talk about the story
How are the characters feeling in this part of the
story? Scared, nervous, brace, etc.
Who do you think is in charge, How can you tell?
What do you think will happen next, etc.?
IMPORTANT—SOC Siblings—If your student
has a brother or sister that you would like to attend WB
Schools, you must fill out an online SCHOOL OF CHOICE

20TH Year Anniversary—T– Shirts are now
What’s happening in the breezeway??
Be sure
to stop by the breezeway and see what is happening. Have you
noticed the bird feeders just outside of the doors? We are in
the process of transitioning the area into a S.T.E.A.M work
area for classes. We will have four areas for students and
their classes to explore. The first is the garden, (growing
fantastically) then a science area across from that, an engineering area and a reading resource area. We have magnifying glasses, safety glasses, tweezers, rulers, blocks,
books, etc. already in place, and eventually a microscope or
two should be available. All of this is being done so we can
STEAM it up out there by measuring plant growth, observing plant growth, observing organisms in the garden water,
building, researching, thinking, etc. Our hope is to change it
up with the seasons and provide our student’s classes with
other learning experiences throughout the year. We some
visible thinking posters up to help with the “Think Tank”.
Watch our knowledge grow!

DID YOU HEAR?—Monday, March 23 the
West Bloomfield Board of Education voted to include 2nd grade at Gretchko. That means starting
in September 2015, Gretchko will be a kindergarten through second grade school. We are very excited and looking forward to welcoming the second
grade teachers from Scotch to join us at Gretchko.
In the coming weeks, we will be evaluating our resources, playgrounds, schedules and other educational strategies to integrate second grade into
Gretchko. Please watch the newsletter for updates.
Don’t forget to call the safeline at (248-865-6572) if your child will be late or absent from
