The unit of currency used in this publication is the
euro. The exchange rate at the end of a specific year
was used to convert the domestic currency to euros
for the period prior to the introduction of the euro. In
some tables, the amounts are shown in millions or
billions of euros, which is marked separately.
The growth index rates are calculated as the ratio
between the data for the selected year and the data
for the previous year, without taking inflation into
account.
When ranking the insurance classes, the life
insurance group is taken into account as an
insurance class.

The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) proclaimed 2015 as the
International Year of Light. Light plays an important role in our lives. It gives life through photosynthesis,
a process which enables forests to perform an increasingly vital task for humanity: generating oxygen
from carbon dioxide. Forests retain rainwater, protect the soil from erosion and prevent landslides. They
influence temperature and atmospheric humidity. Forests are also the source of one of the world's most
important raw materials and, at the same time, are home to many species of plant and animal. It is for
this reason, therefore, that forests – our most precious asset – are the focus of this issue of the Statistical
Insurance Bulletin.
