Later in 1966, Carl took a job as the mine
superintendent for the Khetri Copper
Project in Rajasthan, India for three years.
Since Carl had great success in India with
copper mining, Arizona’s copper mining
industry was in his future. Carl took a
position as shaft superintendent with
Cementation to “sink” shafts for Magma
Copper Company in San Manuel.
After Magma Copper, Carl continued his career in
mining, working in sometimes remote areas, including
Chile and the states of South Dakota, Nevada, Texas,
Utah, Alabama, Oklahoma and others, however he always
maintained Arizona as his “home base”.
To many, Carl was a workaholic, a man dedicated to his
mining profession. However, he enjoyed hunting and
shooting, and loved the outdoors. He had many stories
about hunting Blue Bull in India, deer in Arizona and
even raccoons in Oklahoma, using his hunting dogs. Carl
was an independent, intelligent man that loved to read,
especially books about history and politics.
Carl was a very loving husband, father and grandfather,
and will be missed by all. He is survived by his wife,
Phelsadine; three daughters: Carla Graham, Denise
(Skipper) Chambers, Brenda (George) Widugiris;
Phelsadine’s three children: Mark (Teri) Anderson,
Pam (Dan) McClure, Trinka (Mark) Henderson; eight
grandchildren: Andrew Wilson, George Chambers III,
Joy Chambers, Dan Jr. (Amber) McClure, Nate (Mandy)
McClure, Todd (Monica) Anderson, Tobi (Clayton) Seavey
and Mariah Henderson; and, eight great-grandchildren.

San Manuel Airport Master Plan to be finalized by December
By Andrew Luberda
San Manuel Miner
The second and final
Public Information
Meeting (PIM) took place
last Wednesday at the
Terminal Building at the
San Manuel Airport. The
purpose of the meeting
was to inform members of
the local community about
the airport’s future plans,
and to solicit input from
the public concerning the
plans.
Wednesday’s meeting
represented one of the
final steps in the planning
process, which began

last October, before the
Master Plan is completed
and presented to the
Pinal County Board of
Supervisors in December.
An Executive Summary
of the Airport Master Plan
was formally presented
to more than 20 airport
planning consultants,
county officials and local
community members.
The Airport Master
Plan covers all aspects
of the planning process,
in accordance with the
current requirements
of the Federal Aviation
Administration (FAA) and
the Arizona Department of
Transportation (ADOT).
Nicholas J. Pela, the
Airport Project Planner,
summarized the Executive
Summary during a
90-minute presentation.
The Executive Summary
is a concise overview of
the contents of the Airport
Master Plan.
Among the hundreds,
and perhaps thousands,
of pages included in
the Master Plan is an
assessment of the existing
airport infrastructure
and an evaluation for
compliance with current
FAA design standards,
aviation demand, land use,
airport plans, and much
more.
The majority of the plan,
which covers the next 20
years, addresses scenarios
that may or may not
occur. However, there are
immediate maintenance
needs and improvements
that are scheduled within
the next four years.
Being prepared to make
changes when necessary is
an important component
of the plan. An increased
number of operations or
an upgrade to the airport’s
classification, requiring an
extension to the runaway
to accommodate larger
aircrafts requires the plan
to be flexible.
“We don’t predict the
future,” Pela said about
developing the Master
Plan. “What we try to do
is give a set of tools that
are flexible going into the
future and there are things
that happen that you have
to react to.”
One of the first tasks
of the project was an
inventory or assessment
of the airport in its current
condition. This is an
important step, especially
in determining compliance
with federal requirements
and potential funding.
“If you accept a federal or
state grant you have to be
in compliance with design
standards,” said Pela.
According to the
Executive Summary, the
airport was found to be in
generally good condition.
Maintenance and other
facility needs were
identified.
Currently the Airport is
leased from BHP. While
the Master Plan does not
recommend buying the
land, Jim Petty, the Pinal
County Airport Economic
Director, is negotiating a
potential purchase. The
process to purchase the
land will take three years,
including an environmental
assessment because FAA
and/or ADOT funding will
be used.
The first five years of the
plan (2014-19) is split in
two phases: the Immediate
(2014-16) and Short Term
Development (2017-19)
Phasing Plans.
The work in these
phases consists primarily
of maintenance,
rehabilitation, capacity,
and safety projects that will
allow the airport to better
accommodate its existing
activity.
This includes a program
of pavement maintenance,
apron construction with
shaded aircraft parking,
runway and taxiway
rehabilitation, access
road relocation, 2-5 unit
tee hangars and aprons,
taxiway lighting, auto
parking, and more.
The access road location
is necessary in order
to comply with FAA
guidelines that require
roads not to be within
the limits of the Runway
Protection Zone (RPZ), a
trapezoid area at each end
of the runway.
As previously stated, FAA
compliance is important in
securing future funding.

Summary or the Airport
Master Plan in its entirety,

Update on Resolution Copper Project
By Mila Besich-Lira
Copper Area News
Officials at Resolution Copper recently announced
that the sinking of the number 10 shaft is almost
complete. Crews need about 60 feet or less to reach the
bottom of the shaft. At completion the shaft will be the
deepest shaft in north America.
While there is much to celebrate about this milestone,
the company also learned of an application submitted
by the San Carlos Apache tribe to designate the Oak
Flats Campground and Apache Leap as a historic
and culturally significant site. The application was
submitted to the Tonto National Forest in September.
The official process to make this designation takes
about six months to a year and is finalized by the

keeper of the historic register in Washington, D.C.
Pinal County Supervisor Pete Rios was invited by the
Forest Service to comment in either support or against
the designation as part of the process. Rios submitted
a letter opposing the designation and also submitted
comments and letters written by community members
in Superior as well as elders at the San Carlos Apache
Tribe who opposed the designation.
The designation would create additional permitting
processes through the National Environmental
Protection Act (NEPA) before the mine could open.
Rio Tinto and BHP, the joint owners of the project,
are both members of the United Nations Indigenous
Peoples and Human Rights pacts. The historic
designation could pose a threat to both companies’
corporate ethics.

First graders trick or treat for food bank
By Annie Martinez
Special to the Miner
On Oct. 31, 2014 the first grade children of First Avenue
Elementary did something amazing. They went trick or
treating for the Tri-Community Food Bank. They did not
ask for candy but instead for a can of food to help those in
need this year. The children dressed up in their Halloween
costumes and went door to door around the school
collecting food.
Each child was all smiles as they walked around the
neighborhood. The families that live around the school
participated and the combined effort of this community
was 200 cans of food for the Tri-Community Food Bank.
The teachers also used the food collection as a wonderful
teaching tool involving the students with the tallying of
cans. Each child got to take turns forming “rods” (groups
of 10 cans) and once the final number was in, everyone
was all smiles.
I want to take a moment to thank not just the children of
First Avenue for their community service, but the teachers
Mrs. Mansager, and Mrs. Austin, as well as all the families
who donated their time and food to help this great cause.
I love the fact that the children were excited to help out
those in need, and that our teachers and staff saw a way to
allow them the opportunity to help. I am grateful to have
been able to witness this act of community service and
hope to see it again.
I’m thankful
to be a chicken.
Happy
Thanksgiving

Oracle Schools sponsor Halloween Festival and Haunted House
By Nina Crowder
San Manuel Miner
The Oracle School District held a Halloween Festival
including a well put together and scary haunted house.
The youth from Oracle and surrounding area attended
and had plenty to do. The young and older people were
dressed for an evening of excitement and scary times.
Oracle allowed everyone an opportunity to participate
in jumping castles, food of many varieties they had the
chance to win gold fish, candy, by throwing darts at
balloons, bean bag toss and many other activities. It was a
wonderful turn out and everyone seemed to have a great
time!
The Haunted House was freaky, scary and everything a
haunted house should be. Actors and props can only go so
far, so it’s important to approach the haunted house the
right way, you have to play into the fantasy of the haunted
house. Play into being a victim a little bit or rescue a
friend who is scared. No one is going to hurt you even if
it seems like it especially when they run after you with
running chain saws and clowns that don’t move until you
are right up on them. The Oracle Haunted House had all
this and more it was certainly worth the adventure.
Some of the sponsors to make this event possible were:
Oracle School District Administration, Saddlebrooke
Community Outreach, Sycamore Canyon Representatives
and the generous volunteer time of the Oracle Teachers.
Thank you all for putting forth the hard work to make this
special festival available for the community!

San Manuel has annual Halloween Parade
By Nina Crowder
San Manuel Miner
The San Manuel Volunteer Fire Department led the annual
Halloween parade. The community looks forward to such events.
It’s nice to see everyone getting together dressed up and enjoying
all the sights. The parade was well attended and successful. It’s
the volunteers of the community and their time they give that
make these events possible.
Children of all ages dressed up and the judges had a difficult
time deciding the winners but finally came to the conclusion of
these winning contestants: for Kinder and under first place was
Mia Bravo as Queen of Hearts, second place was Annie Nieman
as the Punken, third place went to Dario Estrada as Monster Ink;
first through third graders, first place was Isacc Halbert, second
place was Abigail Valdez, third place was Mikala Hirojos; fourth
through sixth graders, first place was Riley Gillis, second place
was Eric Valasquez and third was Tyson Hogan; the best family
went to the David Family for the Zombie Family where the father
followed on a motorcycle, second place for best family was the
Valenzuela Family with Frankenstein baby and dad.
Everyone seemed to have a good time as laughs and smiles
filled the air. There were some terrific and creative costumes.
Thank you all who help make these events possible.
The youth are currently participating in Flag Football
and Cheerleading/Pep Squad. Look for the Polar Plunge
in December. Information will be coming out soon. If you

Miners’ cross country advances to state
By Andrew Luberda
San Manuel Miner
The Miners boys’ and girls’ cross country
teams competed at the Division IV,
Section III meet at Marana High School
last Saturday. The Miners were among 18
teams competing for a berth in the state
meet.
The Miners boys’ team qualified for
the State Championship this Saturday,
November 8 at 8:45. The state meet will
take place at the Cave Creek Golf Course
in Phoenix.
Patrick Lopez and Juan Ortega were the
top boys’ runners.
Andrea Castaneda, who is making her
second trip to the state meet, medaled
with a sixth-place finished at the sectional
meet.
A total of eight runners will represent
the Miners at the State Championship
Meet this weekend. They are: Andrea
Castaneda, Patrick Lopez, Juan Ortega,
James Duarte, Colton Stratton, Jared
Gonzales, Carlos Salas, and Marco Salas.
“(We) are very proud of all our runners
this season,” said head coach Maria Lopez,
speaking for the entire coaching staff. “It
will be hard letting all the seniors go.”
Varsity and JV volleyball
teams wrap up seasons
By Andrew Luberda

The Lady Miners were shutout at San Carlos
on Oct. 23, 3 – 0. But they got right back after
it the next day, competing in the Florence
Volleyball Invitational Tournament on Oct. 2425. They finished with a record of 7 – 6 in the
tournament, competing against teams in higher
divisions. The tournament provided good
experience for the Lady Miners.
The Lady Miners played their final match of
the season last Tuesday, defeating Santa Cruz
to avenge a loss earlier this season to the Dust
Devils.
Senior captain Kadi Monfred had 15 kills and
five blocks in the win. The Lady Miners’ other
senior captain, Felicia Medina had 21 serve
points. Juniors Ashley Vargas and Angela
Navarro each had eight assists.
“I am pleased the Lady Miners continued to
play hard and improved their records,” head
coach Cindy Navarro said.

Poor fourth quarter dooms Miners
By Andrew Luberda
San Manuel Miner
The Miners hung tough with the ninth-ranked Sabercats
in last Friday’s home football game, trailing only 14 – 7
heading into the fourth quarter. But the Sabercats poured
it on in the final quarter, outscoring the Miners 29 – 0 on
their way to a 43 – 7 victory.
The loss effectively ended any hopes the Miners had of
reaching the playoffs. Even a win against the Sabercats
may not have earned a playoff berth.
Despite the loss in the season finale, the Miners’ season
should be considered nothing other than a success in head
coach David Ward’s first year at the school.
The Miners won four-straight games after starting the
season with consecutive losses. They finished their season
with a record of 6 – 4, including 4 – 2 in sectional play,
which was good enough to finish third behind playoff
teams Pusch Ridge Christian Academy and San Tan
Foothills.

Miner swimmers finish fourth at Regional Swim Meet
Miner swimmers competed in the Southern
Arizona Regional Qualifier Swim Meet in Oro
Valley at Canyon Del Oro High School on Oct.
31- Nov. 1. It was the final opportunity for
23 teams from Southern Arizona to achieve
qualifying times for the state championship
meet to be held Nov. 7-8. Miner swimmers
were at their best swimming against some of
the best swimmers in the state from much
larger schools like Salpointe, Catalina Foothills,
Ironwood Ridge, Canyon Del Oro, Cienega,
Sahuaro, Rincon, Buena, Tucson, Mountain
View, and Douglas. The Girls 18th place was
respectable for the level of competition. The
Boys had an exceptional meet and finished tied
for fourth place with Buena High School from
Sierra Vista. Only swimming powerhouses
Salpointe, Catalina Foothills and Ironwood
Ridge beat the Miners.
Preliminaries were held Friday with the top 16
Senior Fernanda Vasquez swimming the last leg of the 400 Free Style Relay in her
final swim of her High School Swim season.

swimmers advancing to the finals on Saturday.
The Miners swam well enough in preliminaries
to advance all three Boys relays and one Girls
Relay to the finals on Saturday. The Miners
also shined in the individual events. Each of
the seven boys on the team advanced at least
one individual event to the finals. Against the
tough competition from the 22 other teams,
none of the girls were able to advance to finals
in individual events.
The Boys Medley Relay team of Will
Newman, Taylor Woods, Colbey Stratton, and
Robert Sweeney achieved a state qualifying
consideration time and new school record
in the prelims with a 1:56.66 and went on to
swim a 1:54.37 in finals to greatly improve
the chance of swimming this relay at the state
championship meet.
In the finals, Jacob Christian swam a personal
best of 2:08.61 to finish 14th in the 200
Freestyle. In the 200 Individual Medley, the
all-around event in swimming, three Miner
swimmers finished in the top 16. Taylor Woods
finished seventh with a time of 2:26.80,
Michael Garcia finished 13th in 2:44.53 and
Alec Newman finished 15th in 2:59.42.
Colbey Stratton showed he can sprint with the
upperclassmen, finishing 14th place with a time
of 24.84 in the 50 Freestyle.
Will Newman finished fourth in the 100
Butterfly with a new school record time of
57.06 (and Automatic State Qualifying Time).
Michael Garcia showed the Miner depth in the
Butterfly finishing 15th in 1:15.14.
Colbey Stratton broke the school record in the
100 Freestyle finishing with a time of 55.04 on
his way to an impressive eighth place finish.
In the always exciting 200 Freestyle Relay,
most of the top eight teams were seeded
within a second of each other after prelims.
In a flurry of sprints and relay exchanges, the
Miner team of the Stratton, Woods, Christian,
and Will Newman finished fourth with a new
school record time of 1:37.68 (state qualifying
consideration time).
After a very short rest, Will Newman finished
second in a close 100 Backstroke race in school
record time of 57.53 (automatic qualifying
time). Taylor Woods finished 13th with a
personal best time of 1:09.38 in the 100
Backstroke.
The 400 Free Relay team of Christian, Garcia,
Alec Newman, and Robert Sweeny all swam
personal best times to finished 10th with a time
of 4:07.78.
The Miner Girls made their only event in
finals count. The 400 Freestyle Relay Team of
Raya Woods, Cita Sweeney, Elyssia Aguilar and
Fernanda Vasquez swam to an 11th place finish
with a time of 5:10.82.
With five new school records, and some great
individual and relay swims, the Miners Boys
look ready to compete in the Division II State
Championship Meet at Skyline Aquatic Center
in Mesa on Nov. 8 and 9. Will Newman is
scheduled to compete with automatic times in
the 200 Individual Medley and 100 Backstroke.
The Miners have consideration times in all
three relays and hope to be among the top 24
that compete. Miner swimmers will have to
wait until seeding is done later this week to
determine which relays they will be swimming.

Blessed Sacrament Church has terrific turnout for
annual All Saints Day Pilgrimage
By Nina Crowder
San Manuel Miner
A wonderful journey made to a
scared place as an act of religious
devotion was performed by the
members, parents and youth of the
Blessed Sacrament Church Saturday
morning. They began their walk
at the Mammoth Kidney Dialysis
Center escorted by Pinal County
Police Department, then stopped at
the Blessed Sacrament Church for a
prayer circle, everyone gathered and
held hands after the beautiful prayer
some people spoke the name(s) of the
one’s they were walking for. Then the
group continued walking the rest of
the way to the Mammoth Cemetery.
Some of the group made signs with
pictures, names, drawings on them
to show people who they have lost
in their lives. It is heart-warming
to see so many people join together
to honor and reminisce about their
loved ones. In life we all are going to
experience death in some way, it is a
very difficult part of life but we make
the best and continue forward with
our lives.
At the top of the Mammoth Cemetery, Leane Garcia, who led the group
with compassion and enthusiasm
told everyone, “Thank you for coming and the people who sponsored
each person and for the youth who
carried the cross all the way. Come
out again next year we will do this
again.” Everyone dispersed some
people went to visit grave sites and
others received a ride home from the
long walk.
Many cultures throughout Mexico
and around the world celebrate as a
holiday The Day of the Dead where
gatherings of family and friends pray
and remember friends and family
who have died. Thank you all who
participated with the Blessed Sacrament Church honoring of the dead.

Day is celebrated when it is?
The official ending of World
War I was June 28, 1919,
when the Treaty of Versailles
was signed. Seven months
before that, fighting ceased
with an armistice between
Germany and the Allied
nations, which took effect
on the 11th hour of the 11th
day of the 11th month in
1918. In other parts of the
world, celebrations occur
on this same day, but, are
called Armistice Day or
Remembrance Day.
“To us in America, the
reflections of Armistice Day
will be filled with solemn
pride in the heroism of those
who died in the country’s
service and with gratitude
for the victory, both because
of the thing from which it
has freed us and because
of the opportunity it has
given America to show her
sympathy with peace and
justice in the councils of
the nations.”[, President
Woodrow Wilson stated, as he
first proclaimed the holiday,
then known as Armistice Day.
On June 4,1926, the United
States Congress passed a
resolution requesting then
President Calvin Coolidge
to issue a proclamation to
observe November 11. On May
13, 1933, a Congressional Act
made November 11, in each
year, a legal holiday.
The difference between
Veteran’s Day and Memorial
Day is that the former
celebrates all the men and
women who have served
in the Armed Forces of our
country, while the latter is
dedicated to the remembrance

SAFETY
Whether you’re a Southwest Gas customer or
not, it’s important to know how to recognize
and respond to a natural gas leak.
John Hernandez | Miner
By John Hernandez
San Manuel Miner
The 32nd annual Oracle Run was held on
Saturday, Oct. 25. There were 149 runners
competing in the 10K run. The overall
winner was Brian Folts of Denver, Colo.
running in his first Oracle Run. Last year’s
winner Brian Hall of Tucson finished
second. The overall women’s champion
was Tia Accetta of Tucson. Seventy-
four year old Sue Smith took first in the
women’s 70-99 age division. Sue has run
in all 32 Oracle Runs.
Two local runners finished second in
their age division, Alicia Peoble of San
Manuel and Mike Wilson of Oracle. Local
runners who competed include Monique
Hauweghen, of San Manuel, Kerbey
Wright, Charla Wright, Jane Redmann,
John Wasley and David Jaffrey all of
Oracle.
A leak may be present if you:
SMELL: An odor similar to rotten eggs, even if it’s faint or
momentary.
HEAR: A hissing or roaring sound coming from the ground
or above-ground pipeline.
SEE: Dirt or water blowing into the air, discolored vegetation
surrounding a pipeline, or standing water continuously bubbling.
lf you suspect a leak:
nLeave the area immediately.
From a safe place, call 911 and Southwest Gas at 1-877-860-6020, day or night, whether
n
you’re a customer or not. A Southwest Gas representative will be there as soon as possible.
nDon’t smoke or use matches or lighters.
nDon’t turn on or off any electric switches, thermostats, or appliance controls; or use automated doors.
nDon’t start or stop an engine.
For more information about natural gas pipeline safety, visit
swgas.com/safety or call 1-877-860-6020.
