The Fa’asao Marist High School Cougars girls Varsity volleyball team now sits at .500 in the
standings so far in this year’s American Samoa High School Athletic Association (ASHSAA)
Girls Varsity Volleyball season. This past Tuesday the Cougars made a trip to Tafuna High
School to take on the defending Varsity champion Warriors. The Warriors came into the game
with a three game winning streak and appeared to be back on track — after dropping their first
two games of the season. But on this day, it was not to be for the Warriors, as they were downed
by the Cougars in three hard fought sets; 20-25, 25-21 and 21-25. The Cougars and Warriors are
now tied in the standings with both holding steady at 3 wins and 3 losses each.
The undefeated Faga’itua Vikings were looking forward to last Monday’s match-up against
the high powered Kanana Fou Stallions, but due to an unforeseen transportation problem for the
Stallions, they were not able to make the trip to Faga’itua to face the Vikings. Another team sitting
at .500 is the Nu’uuli VocTech Wildcats whose last game was last Saturday when they defeated
the Leone Lions. The Lions are still looking for their first win of the season.
There is still hope for one team who is near the bottom of the standings. The Samoana Sharks
were winless until last Monday when they defeated the Cougars, putting a check mark in their win
column for the first time this season. The Sharks will be meeting the Lions this coming Saturday at
Tafuna High School where they will be playing each other twice, with the first game at 8:00 a.m.
This will be a chance for the Sharks — who have already proved to themselves on Monday that
they can win — to add two more wins to their record. If they can pull this off, or even just take
one win on Saturday, they will surely be back in the race.
The Lions on the other hand, cannot drop both of theses games. If they do, they will definitely
be in desperation mode. The Lions need to walk away with at least one win Saturday just to flick
on the switch to see the light at the end of the tunnel. However, if the Lions, who are playing the
Stallions today in Kanana Fou, can pull out the victory, it will definitely take some pressure off of
them going into Saturday’s game against the Sharks.

You might say the Minnesota Vikings are pondering a quarterbacking dilemma.
Their veteran starter, Matt Cassel, is gone for the season with
a broken left foot. First-round draft pick Teddy Bridgewater took
over in his first pro start last Sunday and performed extremely
well in a 41-28 win over Atlanta. But Bridgewater sprained his
left ankle and had to leave late in that game.
That could leave Christian Ponder, the former starter and
a 2011 first-rounder, as the starter Thursday night when the
Vikings visit Green Bay.
Even worse for Minnesota (No. 23 in the AP Pro32) is that
the Packers (No. 11) and Aaron Rodgers seemed to find their
mojo in a romp at Soldier Field last weekend.
None of this bodes well for the Vikings (2-2), a 9 1/2-point
underdog to the Packers (2-2).
“If he can play, we’ll play him,” coach Mike Zimmer said of
Bridgewater. “I want to do what’s best for the team. I’m sure the
training staff and the coaching staff is going to do what’s best for
the team also,” he said.
The Packers have no such issues, especially after Rodgers
picked apart the Bears for 302 yards and four touchdowns in a
38-17 rout. “We have to do a great job of keeping an eye on our
luggage — that means your man — and play football,” cornerback Captain Munnerlyn said of the prospect of facing Rodgers
and one of the NFL’s top receivers, Jordy Nelson.
The Vikings might need eyes in the back of their heads to
contain Rodgers and the Packers.
PACKERS, 33-16
No. 26 New York Jets (plus 6 1/2) at No. 5 San Diego
Anyone who can figure out this line, please clue us in.
BEST BET: CHARGERS, 27-13

Manning about to join
Favre in “500 TD” club
ENGLEWOOD, Colo. (AP) — Peyton Manning’s next
touchdown throw will be his 500th, and he’s spreading the
credit around just like he does the football.
The five-time MVP doesn’t like to talk about individual
accomplishments.
As he approaches another milestone in a career filled with so
many big moments, however, Manning took time Wednesday
to reflect on all the help he’s received on his 499 TD passes.
He acknowledged that yes, he looks at his TD throws and
interceptions every year because if the former is high and the
latter low, “that means you’re getting your team in the end
zone and that means you’re protecting the ball. I think that
particular statistic usually leads to winning football games.”
“As far as the other thing, obviously, you’re just trying to
win this football game,” Manning said. “But when asked about
it, I have reflected on how many great teammates and coaches
that I’ve been with along the way that have been a part of that.
You don’t throw that many touchdowns without a lot of help.”
It’s not just the 44 players who have caught one of Manning’s TD throws, but the rest of his teammates and coaches.
“As my old center Jeff Saturday said, the only reason I’ve
thrown that many is because I had great protection for so many

Teen-aged football player
dies after injury during game
ELWOOD, N.Y. (AP) — A high school football player has
died after he collided with an opponent and collapsed during a
game on Long Island.
Authorities say Tom Cutinella, a player for ShorehamWading River High School, died at a hospital Wednesday night
after suffering a head injury during a game with John Glenn
High School in Elwood. A spokeswoman for the school districts
tells Newsday that Cutinella had been in the intensive-care unit
after undergoing surgery. Suffolk County police say the collision happened about 6 p.m. Cutinella, a guard/linebacker, was
injured during the third quarter of the varsity game.
Dozens of teammates, relatives and friends waited at the hospital for an update on his condition. As news of his death spread,
two people fell to the floor weeping.
Obama salutes 2013 MLS
champions, Sporting KC
WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama has
saluted the 2013 Major League Soccer champions Sporting
Kansas City. He credits the “dedicated fans” of Kansas City for
helping the sport grow in the United States.
Obama paid tribute to the team Wednesday for winning the
MLS trophy 10 months ago in a freezing penalty kick shootout.
Obama singled out Kansas City defender Matt Besler and
midfielder Graham Zusi, who were on the U.S. Men’s National
Team for this summer’s World Cup in Brazil.
The president also noted that Kansas City was enjoying a
banner athletic week. The Kansas City Royals won the American League wild card game Tuesday and the NFL Kansas City
Chiefs defeated the New England Patriots Monday.
Obama said: “Clearly something is going on in Kansas City.”
Bridgewater questionable
for Vikings vs. Packers
EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. (AP) — The Minnesota Vikings
have listed quarterback Teddy Bridgewater as questionable for
their game at Green Bay.
The final injury report of the week was released Wednesday,
as the Vikings prepared to travel east for their primetime game
against the rival Packers Thursday.
Bridgewater sprained his left ankle in the fourth quarter of his
first NFL start Sunday, a victory over Atlanta. He was back on
the sideline before the end of the game without crutches, and an
MRI showed no major damage.
But Bridgewater was held out of practice Monday and
Tuesday. The NFL’s definition of the questionable designation
is a 50 percent chance of playing.
The Vikings also announced Wednesday they’ll hold linebacker Chad Greenway out for the second straight game.
U.S. women’s soccer team to
play in tournament in Brazil
CHICAGO (AP) — The U.S. women’s soccer team will play
four games in a tournament in Brazil in December.
The Americans will face China on Dec. 10, Brazil four days
later and Argentina on Dec. 17 as part of the International Tournament of Brasilia, which will be held at the National Stadium
Mane Garrincha, one of the sites of this year’s men’s World
Cup. The championship and third-place game will be Dec. 21.
The games were announced Wednesday.
The top-ranked U.S. team will be playing in Brazil for the
first time since 1997. Brazil is ranked sixth, China 14th and
Argentina 37th. The tournament follows the North and Central
American and Caribbean Women’s Championship, which will
be played in the United States from Oct. 15-26 and serves as
qualifying for next year’s Women’s World Cup.
Djokovic extends China
Open winning streak to 21
BEIJING (AP) — Novak Djokovic extended his winning
streak at the China Open to 21 straight matches, beating Canada’s Vasek Pospisil 6-3, 7-5 under the roof on center court on
a cold, rainy Wednesday. The top-ranked Djokovic came back
from a break down in the second set and fought off a set point at
4-5 to close out the match in straight sets. He has lost only three
sets en route to winning four China Open titles in four years.
Djokovic faces a tough road to pick up a fifth straight title,
with a potential quarterfinal against No. 5-seeded Grigor Dimitrov and possible semifinal against U.S. Open champion Marin
Cilic or Andy Murray.
He could meet No. 2 Rafael Nadal in the final. Although his
wife, Jelena Ristic, is preparing to give birth to their first child in
about a month, Djokovic said he remains focused on his goal of
finishing No. 1 for the third time in the last four years.
He has a healthy lead over Nadal and No. 3 Roger Federer
in the rankings, but he’s still planning to play a full tournament
schedule as the season winds down, including the ATP Tour
Finals in London in November.

Bumgarner, Giants silence Pirates 8-0 to advance
PITTSBURGH (AP) —
Brandon Crawford figured the
San Francisco Giants needed
one run, maybe two, the way
ace Madison Bumgarner was
dealing.
A grand slam provided
all that and more, silencing a
revved-up crowd and propelling San Francisco into the
meat of the playoffs. Streaking
in May and slumping in September, the Giants are back
to their old resilient selves in
October.
Hey, it’s what they do this
time of year.
Crawford’s
slam
off
Edinson Volquez in the fourth
inning led the Giants to an 8-0
victory over the Pittsburgh
Pirates in the National League
wild-card game Wednesday
night, sending San Francisco
on to Washington for the bestof-five Division Series starting
Friday.
“We thrive in these situations,” Crawford said. “I don’t
know what it is. We just keep
fighting no matter what the
circumstance.”
The Giants won their eighth
consecutive postseason game
and seventh straight with their
season on the line, a streak
that dates back to their run to
a World Series title in 2012.
While much work remains
before they can start thinking
about the franchise’s eighth
championship, there was certainly a familiar feeling at PNC
Park as San Francisco dismantled the Pirates.
“We’ve been through it
before, a lot of this team has,”
Brandon Belt said. “We used
that experience tonight. We
know when we get in these
situations we’re going to have
a good ballclub.”
Particularly
when
Bumgarner is on the mound.
He tossed a four-hitter with 10
strikeouts, needing 109 pitches
to put a quick end to Pittsburgh’s second straight playoff
appearance.
Mixing his fastball with
a slider and curve the Pirates
rarely touched, Bumgarner was
in complete control and looked
very much like the ace who won
18 games during San Francisco’s bumpy regular season.
“If you don’t want to pitch
in these games, you probably
need to find something else to
do,” he said.
No chance of that for
Bumgarner or the rest of a
roster that flourishes once the
calendar flips past September.
Crawford’s grand slam was the
first in postseason history by
a shortstop — and he wasn’t
aiming for the fences.
With the bases loaded in the
fourth and nobody out in a scoreless game, Crawford turned on
Volquez’s hanging breaking
ball and sent it to right. Pittsburgh’s Travis Snider waited to
play it off the wall. He never got
the chance, instead slumping his
shoulders as the ball landed a
couple of rows deep to give the
Giants a 4-0 lead that felt considerably larger.
“I was in shock a little bit,”
Crawford said.
So were the Pirates, who
never recovered. One night
after Kansas City edged Oakland in a thrilling start to baseball’s postseason, this one was
over by the middle innings.
Overpowering one of the
NL’s best lineups, Bumgarner
walked one and threw 79 strikes
in his latest stellar October performance. The big left-hander,
who allowed only four singles,
has thrown 15 scoreless innings
in two World Series starts.
“We got outplayed tonight,”
Pittsburgh second baseman Neil
Walker said. “Bumgarner went
out there, he did what he wanted
to do. He put up the strike zone
and he made it tough on us.”
Belt drove in three runs as
the Giants padded the lead late.
By then the black-clad crowd
that began the night in a frenzy
was watching in dismayed
silence. “We’ve been there
before,” Belt said. “It’s a lot of
fun when you’re on the road. ...
You know you’re doing something good when the crowd
goes silent.”

In this Sept. 15, 2014, file photo, Indianapolis Colts’ Ahmad Bradshaw (44) is congratulated
by quarterback Andrew Luck (12) after scoring on a seven yard touchdown reception during the
second half of an NFL football game against the Philadelphia Eagles in Indianapolis.
At left is tight end Dwayne Allen (83). Luck and the Colts are clicking on all cylinders.
vThe running game has produced three straight 100-yard games, and Luck is on pace for the
(AP Photo/Michael Conroy, File)
more productive season in Colts history.
Colts’ Luck on pace for
record-breaking season
INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — Mike Adams got
a firsthand look at Peyton Manning’s recordbreaking blockbuster last season in Denver.
Now the former Broncos safety is hoping
to catch the sequel with his new teammates
in Indianapolis. With Andrew Luck off to the
best statistical start of his pro career, the Colts’
new starting safety has started detecting trends
that seem to come from the same script — an
offense that keeps the defense on the sideline,
a scoreboard that resembles a video game and a
quarterback that has seemingly mastered every
facet of the game. “It almost feels like every
time a third down comes, he moves the chains
and that’s the key. Move the chains, move the
chains and eventually you know six points are
coming, so, yeah, it does kind of feel like (last
year),” Adams said Wednesday.
It may not seem fair to compare Luck’s spectacular early season numbers to a 16-game run
from Manning, a run many consider the greatest
season for a quarterback in league history. Manning threw for 5,477 yards and 55 touchdowns,
both NFL records.
But if the Colts’ franchise quarterback stays
healthy and keeps playing this efficiently, Luck
could work his way into the conversation.
Manning’s successor in Indy has never
played better — and the numbers prove it.
He has completed 60 of 80 passes for 763
yards with eight touchdowns and only one
interception over the past two games, and he’s
only been sacked twice in the past three weeks.
Instead of having to engineer late rallies,
he’s led the Colts (2-2) to back-to-back blowouts against division rivals. And the 25-yearold Luck leads the league with 1,305 yards and
13 touchdowns and has led the Colts to an NFLbest 136 points.
At this rate, the Colts’ franchise quarterback
may not only break Manning’s single-season
franchise records for completions, yards passing
and touchdowns in fewer attempts, he would
become the first player in Colts’ history to throw
for more than 5,000 yards and 50 touchdowns.
Coach Chuck Pagano was so impressed with
Luck’s 393-yard, four-touchdown performance
Sunday, he even compared the current twogame run to Michael Jordan being in a zone
in his prime. He’s not alone. “Wow! Fifty-two
touchdowns, wow! That’s my man,” Adams
said when told of Luck’s current pace. “I’m
rooting for him.”
Luck would rather focus on film study rather
than the rave reviews, and he insists the biggest
reason for this surge is actually his teammates.
Receivers Reggie Wayne and T.Y. Hilton are
both ranked among the AFC’s top 10 in receptions. Running back Ahmad Bradshaw already
has a career-high four touchdown receptions.
Dwayne Allen’s three TD catches are third
among NFL tight ends, and an offensive line
that was decimated by injuries during the preseason has managed to clear the way for Indianapolis to produce three straight 100-yard
rushing games and set a club record for most
total yards over a two-game span (1,027).
Luck’s goal is simple: Keep the momentum.
“I think if you can get that ball rolling and
not relax, not take your foot off the pedal in a
sense, you hopefully can corral some of that
momentum and keep it going,” he said.
Indy may not need to make any major revisions Sunday against Baltimore (3-1).
While the Ravens’ usually stout defense is
allowing 15.0 points, the pass defense has been
suspect. Opposing quarterbacks have completed 64.2 percent of their passes, thrown one
interception and been sacked only four times.
And now Baltimore is up against one of the
NFL’s hottest quarterbacks in a city where it
has never won. Indy expected Luck to emerge
as the best young quarterback in the league
when it drafted him with the No. 1 overall pick
in 2012. He hasn’t disappointed. As a rookie,
Luck engineered one of the greatest one-season
turnarounds in league history and leading the
Colts back to the playoffs.
Last year, Luck cut his interception total in
half, increased his completion percentage, led
the Colts to the AFC South title and directed
the second-largest comeback in playoff history.
This season, Luck blamed himself for a
botched play call on the goal line in Denver and
a late red zone interception against Philadelphia, plays that may have cost Indy two wins.
But as he works out the kinks, Luck is becoming
the headline star in the NFL’s top offense. “It’s
not a shock,” tight end Coby Fleener said. “I think
this is kind of the Andrew Luck that everybody
here sees on a daily basis, and now the people that
follow the stats actually maybe believe it.”
Notes: Pagano said left guard Jack Mewhort
(ankle) will be replaced in the starting lineup
this week by Lance Louis, who started in place
of the injured Hugh Thornton at right guard
last Sunday. ... Pagano also said safety Sergio
Brown will replace LaRon Landry in the lineup
as Landry serves a four-game suspension for violating the league’s performance-enhancing substance policy. Pagano said he was “disappointed”
when he found out about the suspension.
Ohio St. student who ran
on turf loses scholarship
COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — A student who ran onto the field
during an Ohio State football game and was body-slammed by a
coach is losing his scholarship amid his court case.
Defense attorney Mark Collins says officials on Tuesday
started removing 21-year-old Anthony Wunder from the Evans
Scholars program, which covers tuition and housing for former
golf caddies. The fourth-year engineering student is charged
with misdemeanor criminal trespassing. His attorney entered a
not-guilty plea in Franklin County Municipal Court.
Wunder was stopped and slammed down by an assistant
strength and conditioning coach Saturday during Ohio State’s
home victory over Cincinnati. The coach, Anthony Schlegel,
is a former Buckeyes linebacker. The hit has been a sensation
on social media. Coach Urban Meyer said he had a somewhat
serious conversation with Schlegel about the hit.
McIlroy wins PGA Tour player of the year
ST. ANDREWS, Scotland (AP) — One incredible month of
golf was enough for Rory McIlroy to be voted PGA Tour player
of the year. The award was announced on Wednesday and surprised no one. McIlroy won the award, which is a vote of PGA
Tour members, for the second time in three years.
He joined Tiger Woods, Greg Norman and Nick Price as the
only multiple winners of the Jack Nicklaus Award since it began
in 1990. “I’d like to win a lot more in my career, and I feel like I
can,” McIlroy said from St. Andrews, where he is playing in the
Dunhill Links Championship.
McIlroy and Jimmy Walker each won three times on the PGA
Tour, though the size of the trophy tilted heavily in favor of the
25-year-old from Northern Ireland. McIlroy went wire-to-wire to
win the British Open, rallied from three shots behind on the final
day at Firestone to capture his first World Golf Championship, and
won the PGA Championship with a sterling back nine at Valhalla.
LeBron James bringing
his story to TV series
CLEVELAND (AP) — LeBron James is hoping to motivate
kids by telling his own inspiring story.
The NBA superstar is co-producing a half-hour TV series
called “Becoming,” which will showcase the journeys of some
of today’s top athletes. The pilot focuses on James, his struggles
growing up in a single-parent home in Akron, Ohio and his rise
to become one of the world’s best basketball players.
The show premieres Oct. 26 on Disney XD. It’s co-produced
by Springhill Productions, James’ company operated by close
friend and business partner Maverick Carter, and ESPN Films.
James says he was inspired as a kid by Michael Jordan, Deion
Sanders and Allen Iverson. “Sports and athletes were my inspiration growing up,” he said. “When I learned that they had some
of the same struggles and challenges I did, it made everything
seem possible. That’s what ‘Becoming’ is all about.”
James, who re-signed with the Cavaliers this summer, has
always had a strong connection with kids, a bond that’s grown as
he became a father. The pilot includes rarely-seen footage of James
playing AAU basketball and at St. Vincent-St. Mary High School.
Police sent to home of
ex-Clippers owner by wife
LOS ANGELES (AP) — Beverly Hills police were called
to the home of Donald Sterling after his wife Shelly reported
a burglary, but found no crime. Instead, officers found Sterling
hosting V. Stiviano — the woman whose recordings of him
making racist remarks led to his removal as owner of the Los
Angeles Clippers and a lifetime ban from the NBA.
Lt. Lincoln Hoshino says officers were called to the home by
Shelly Sterling at 1:40 p.m. Wednesday and were there for roughly
15 minutes. Hoshino says they found “no criminal activity whatsoever” and Stiviano was her husband’s invited guest.
In March, Shelly Sterling sued Stiviano, seeking the return of
more than $2.5 million in gifts Stiviano allegedly received from
her husband. Shelly Sterling’s attorney said he had no knowledge of the incident.
Legends of Coaching award
to SDSU’s Steve Fisher
LOS ANGELES (AP) — San Diego State’s Steve Fisher
will receive the John R. Wooden Award’s Legends of Coaching
honor in April.
The annual award recognizes coaches who exemplify Wooden’s standards of coaching success and personal integrity.
Fisher will receive the award at the Los Angeles Athletic
Club during the weekend of April 10-12. He is 312-176 in 15
seasons at San Diego State. He has guided the Aztecs to the
NCAA tournament seven times, including five straight appearances. Last season, the Aztecs were 31-5 and reached the Sweet
Sixteen. Fisher has an overall record of 421-255, including 8 1/2
years at Michigan, where he won the NCAA championship in
his first season as head coach.
Among previous winners of the award are Tara VanDerveer
of Stanford, Roy Williams of Kansas, Mike Krzyzewski of Duke
and Dean Smith of North Carolina.

“An Equal Opportunity Employer”
LeBron is warmly
welcomed “home”
by Cleveland fans
CLEVELAND (AP) — The crowd’s deafening roar was so
loud LeBron James couldn’t hear his name announced.
Unsure of whether to walk out onto the floor, he looked
around and realized he was the last one left on the bench.
Seconds later, James knew he was home.
Cleveland fans welcomed the NBA superstar back with
open arms and ear-splitting screams on Wednesday night as
nearly 17,000 fans showed up to watch the Cavaliers hold their
annual scrimmage, a glorified practice that provided a preview
of what could become a spectacular season.
Wearing the familiar No. 23 wine and gold jersey, the one he
swapped for a No. 6 in Miami four years ago, James returned to
the court where he took his first steps as a pro.
As he waited on the bench to be introduced, James couldn’t
hear the announcer say, “From Akron St. Vincent-St. Mary
High School, No. 23 ... “
So James began walking out.
“I really couldn’t hear it,” he said. “The fans were really
loud and the PA was a little down, so I really couldn’t hear it. I
was the last person sitting on the bench, so I guess it had to be
my time. But the roar was very well received and I’m grateful
to be able to be in this position where the fans welcomed me
back like that.”
This ovation was in stark contrast to the one he got following
the last game James in played for Cleveland in 2010. Following
a 27-point loss to Boston in Game 5 of the Eastern Conference
semifinals, a game in which he was oddly passive, James was
targeted with boos and later questioned about his effort.
Two months later, he announced he was signing with the
Heat.
But all has been forgiven, if not forgotten.
For Cleveland fans, the sight of James once again on the
Cavs’ home floor, soaring to the basket for a dunk or catching
an outlet pass from new teammate Kevin Love, was something
to behold.
“I can’t believe this,” said 19-year-old Alex Krocker from
Bolivar, Ohio. “I’ve waited my whole life for a Cavs team like
this, for a Cleveland team like this. It’s crazy.”
Moments after the opening tip, James, who in a heartfelt
letter declared he was re-signing with the Cavs on July 11,
reminded Cleveland fans what they’ve been missing.
He was short with his first shot, a fade-away baseline jumper.
But he grabbed his own rebound and calmly sank a 3-pointer.
He followed that with a two-handed dunk and later drove
the lane for one his signature slams, the kind of play that has
elevated him to the world’s best player.
The Cavs gave away 20,000 free tickets for the event and the
team announced 16,723 showed up to watch the Wine squad
beat the Gold 66-52.
çJames scored 13 points, Kyrie Irving added 10 and Love
had nine, but the numbers didn’t matter.
This was another first in a season of homecoming events for
James.
Before the Cavs took the court for pregame warmups, James
gathered his teammates in a hallway outside the locker room
and led them in prayer. He told them to “play hard and play
smart. Let’s get better today.”
As they were about to exit the tunnel, James pulled a prank
on unsuspecting rookies Joe Harris and Alex Kirk.
James told the two youngsters to lead the team out, and
when they started toward the court, the superstar held the
rest of the Cavs back, leading to an embarrassing moment for
Harris and Kirk.
“It was a good laugh,” Harris said.
While the Cavs were on the floor, first-year Cavs coach
David Blatt was encouraged by the team’s ball movement but
knows the defense has a long way to go before it’s at a championship level.
“Overall the impression was positive,” said Blatt, who
started James, Irving and Love along with Tristan Thompson
and Dion Waiters but hasn’t committed to his first five. “For
me, you have starters and second starters, that’s what makes
teams good.”
Blatt has James, and that’s all that matters.
A successful international coach, Blatt will face his former
team, Maccabi Tel Aviv on Sunday in the Cavs’ first official
exhibition game. It’s sure to be an emotional night for Blatt,
who has witnessed Cleveland warmly wrap its arms around
James again.
“It’s a very special group of people who live here that appreciate things about people and about life that are admirable,” he
said. “I’m not surprised at all at how he has been received.”

Wilt Chamberlain set to
appear on postage stamp
PHILADELPHIA (AP) — Wilt Chamberlain has been cut down to size. Wilt The Stilt
is now Wilt The Stamp. The Hall of Famer and
the only NBA player to score 100 points in a
game is set to appear on a commemorative U.S
postage stamp. Chamberlain died in 1999 at age
63. The U.S. Postal Service and the Philadelphia 76ers, with cooperation from the NBA,
will formally dedicate the Wilt Chamberlain
Forever stamps in a halftime ceremony at a
Dec. 5 game against Oklahoma City.
The stamps are just over 2 inches tall. Kadir
Nelson, of San Diego, created the two stamp
image portraits of the NBA Hall of Famer.
One is based on a photograph of Chamberlain in a Philadelphia Warriors uniform; the
other is based on an image of Chamberlain in a
Los Angeles Lakers uniform.
Jamaica sets campaign to
develop sports tourism
KINGSTON, Jamaica (AP) — Jamaica is
launching an initiative to develop sports tourism
on the island that is the world’s dominant sprinting
hothouse. The initiative dubbed Jamaica Sport is
part of an effort to diversify the tropical nation’s
tourism offerings. Tourism Minister Wykeham
McNeill notes Jamaica’s sprinting dominance
at the Olympics and other global meets and says
that “now is the time to capitalize on this potential.” The ministry says the initiative unveiled
Wednesday will try to bring more events to
Jamaica, boost tourist arrivals and position the
island “as a major sport destination.”
NFL joins poppy appeal to
honor British war dead
LONDON (AP) — The NFL will join in
honoring Britain’s war dead when the Jacksonville Jaguars play the Dallas Cowboys at Wembley Stadium next month. The NFL says it will
team up with the Royal British Legion to mark
Remembrance Sunday on Nov. 9. The Jaguars
are the “home” team that day for the third regular-season NFL game in London this year.
In line with the legion’s poppy charity appeal,
the uniforms and helmets of both teams will feature the red poppy logo. At the end of the game,
80,000 poppies will be dropped into the Wembley stands. The uniforms will be auctioned off
for charity. Poppies are traditionally worn to
commemorate the sacrifice of those who died
for Britain. Money raised by the poppy appeal
goes to support current and former members of
the armed forces and their families.

Ex-NFL player pleads
guilty to drug charge
TAMPA, Fla. (AP) — Former NFL player
Donald Reche Caldwell has pleaded guilty to drug
charges in Florida. The U.S. Attorney’s Office
reports that the former University of Florida wide
receiver pleaded guilty Wednesday to conspiracy
to possess with intent to distribute a positional
isomer of butylone, also known as ethylone, and
commonly marketed as the street drug “Molly.”
Caldwell faces up to 20 years in federal prison.
A plea agreement states that the 35-year-old
Tampa resident accepted a parcel from China
containing 1.5 kilograms of ethylone in May.
Several days later, investigators say Caldwell
sent a second parcel to Atlanta containing 1
kilogram of Ethylone. Caldwell was a standout
at Florida and was chosen in the second round
of the 2002 NFL draft by the San Diego Chargers. He also played for the New England
Patriots and Washington Redskins.
Panthers Alexander
suspended 10 more games
CHARLOTTE, N.C. (AP) — The NFL
has announced Panthers defensive end Frank
Alexander has been suspended an additional
10 games after violating the league’s substance abuse policy again. The league made the
announcement on Wednesday.
Alexander suspended May 2 for four games
for violating the substance abuse policy. The
Panthers had hoped Alexander’s return this
week would provide some help with Pro Bowler
Greg Hardy out indefinitely while dealing with
a domestic abuse case. Alexander, a fourthround draft pick in 2012, played in 12 games
and had 15 tackles and one sack last season. He
played in 16 games a rookie with 2.5 sacks.
Cowboys’ Spillman subject
of reported sex assault
GRAPEVINE, Texas (AP) — Dallas Cowboys special teams player C.J. Spillman is
under investigation but hasn’t been arrested
or charged after a report of an alleged sexual
assault at the team hotel last month.
Grapevine police spokesman Sgt. Robert
Eberling said Wednesday night that the alleged
assault took place early Sept. 20 at the Gaylord
Texan Resort and Convention Center. The team
flew to St. Louis later that Saturday, and Spillman
played against the Rams the next day. He has
played in all four games, including last weekend
at home against New Orleans. His only tackle of
the season came against the Rams. Spillman is
listed as a safety but hasn’t played this season.
➧ Giants silence Pirates…
Continued from page B4
Volquez was trying to cap his comeback season by sending
Pittsburgh to the NLDS for the second straight year, but he
couldn’t match Bumgarner. The right-hander cruised until the
fourth, when a pair of singles and a walk loaded the bases with
none out. He’d retired Crawford 19 of the 22 times he’d faced
him during his career. It’s the 24th that he’ll remember.
“I tried to bounce it down, back foot, and the ball just kept
going,” Volquez said. “Bad spot.”
That was more than enough for Bumgarner. Pittsburgh, fourth
in the majors in extra-base hits this season, rarely hit the ball
hard. Bumgarner was helped by his defense, too. Third baseman
Pablo Sandoval — all 245 pounds of him — flipped over the
railing in front of the Pittsburgh dugout to track down a foul
popup off the bat of Russell Martin.
Sandoval landed on his feet, a perfect symbol of San Francisco’s
seemingly endless resiliency when October rolls around. Back in
the playoffs after winning the World Series in 2010 and 2012, the
Giants are looking to continue their every-other-year success.
Pittsburgh, on the other hand, was unable to duplicate last
year’s victory over Cincinnati in the wild-card game that followed a 21-year playoff drought. Playing before raucous crowds
at PNC Park, the Pirates pushed St. Louis to a decisive Game
5 before losing their NLDS. This year, Pittsburgh went 17-9
in September while taking the Cardinals to the final day of the
season in an attempt to win the NL Central.
There will be no extended playoff stay this time after Crawford’s grand slam, the fourth in Giants postseason history.
Shortstop had been the only position — including pitcher
— without a slam in postseason play. “That’s crazy,” Crawford said. “With all the great shortstops that have played before,
that’s pretty special. I’m happy to be able to do it.”

➧ A Quarterback Dilemma…
Continued from page B1
In this Dec. 22, 2013, file photo, Denver Broncos’ Peyton Manning (18) waves to fans following
an NFL football game against the Houston Texans in Houston. Manning threw his 51st touchdown pass of the season in the game to set a new NFL record. Manning’s next touchdown throw
will be his 500th, and if the trend holds true, it will be caught by a tight end, not a wide receiver.
(AP Photo/David J. Phillip, File)
Denver plays at home against Arizona on Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014.
➧ Manning about to join Favre…
years. Typical lineman speaking, especially one
in the media now,” Manning said.
“But to tell you the truth, he’s right. There
are so many people that have helped me along
the way.”
He’ll face men who made big early impressions on him Sunday when the Denver Broncos
(2-1) host Arizona (3-0).
Cardinals coach Bruce Arians was Manning’s first quarterback coach when Manning
arrived in the NFL in 1998.
And Arizona’s assistant head coach Tom
Moore was his offensive coordinator during his
13 seasons in Indianapolis.
The Cardinals would love to delay Manning’s milestone another week, but they know
as well as anyone that it’s probably just wishful
thinking.
“That’s tough because Peyton always finds a
way to get the ball in the end zone,” Cardinals
cornerback Patrick Peterson said.
The last time Manning didn’t throw a TD
pass was Nov. 14, 2010, against Cincinnati.
So, chances are No. 500 will come sometime
Sunday.
“He’ll probably brush it off like it’s just
another touchdown,” Denver nose tackle Terrance Knighton said. “But I know it means a lot
to him.”
And chances are Manning’s touchstone
touchdown won’t come down in the arms of a
receiver, either.
Tight ends Julius Thomas (five) and Jacob
Tamme (two) have accounted for all but one of
Manning’s eight TD tosses this season.
Newcomer Emmanuel Sanders went into the
Broncos’ bye last week as the league leader in
catches (25) and yards (334), yet he still waiting
to spike a TD toss from him — unlike Denver
defensive tackle Mitch Unrein.
“It’s still kind of a shock to me that I have a
touchdown from Peyton,” Unrein said.
Sanders can’t wait to join the list.
Continued from page B1
With 14 catches so far, Thomas jokingly
asked Sanders on Wednesday if he could spare
a reception.
“All right,” Sanders retorted. “I’ll trade you
for a touchdown.”
Thomas said Sanders can have No. 500 if he
wants it.
“I’ve already got a couple milestones,” said
Thomas, who caught Manning’s 51st TD throw
that broke Tom Brady’s single-season record
last year. It was one of his dozen TD receptions
that surpassed Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe’s
team record for tight ends.
“I hope they throw it to me,” said Knighton,
noting that a jelly-belly lineman a few lockers
down caught one.
Unrein lined up at fullback on Dec. 2, 2012,
slipped into the left flat unencumbered on firstand-goal from the 1 and hauled in Manning’s
floater to help the Broncos beat Tampa Bay
31-23.
Manning has thrown 100 TD passes in the
regular season since his arrival in Denver.
His first in a Broncos uniform was the 400th
of his career and it came on a 71-yard screen
pass to Demaryius Thomas.
Manning figures to surpass Favre’s record of
508 TD throws later this month.
Behind them are Dan Marino (420), Drew
Brees (370), Brady (363), Fran Tarkenton (342)
and John Elway (300).
Told he has nearly 200 more TD passes than
his boss, Manning said: “He probably has a few
more rushing touchdowns that I do.”
Elway has 33 of those, Manning, 18.
Notes: LB Lerentee McCray (knee) practiced for the first time since getting hurt against
Kansas City on Sept. 14. That left S David
Bruton (ankle) as the only player who didn’t
practice. RG Louis Vasquez (ribcage) was limited. ... Nuggets head coach Brian Shaw and
point guard Ty Lawson attended Wednesday’s
practice.

Dallas ER sent Ebolainfected patient home

Duncan has been kept in
isolation at the hospital since
Sunday. He was listed in
serious but stable condition.
Hospital
epidemiologist
Dr. Edward Goodman said the
patient had a fever and abdominal pain during his first ER
visit, not the riskier symptoms
of vomiting and diarrhea.
But the diagnosis, and the
hospital’s slip-up, highlighted
the wider threat of Ebola, even
far from Africa. “The scrutiny just needs to be higher
now,” said Dr. Rade Vukmir,
a spokesman for the American
College of ER Physicians.
Ebola is believed to have
sickened more than 7,100
people in West Africa and
killed more than 3,300,
according to the World Health
Organization. Liberia is one of
the three countries hit hardest
in the epidemic, along with
Sierra Leone and Guinea.

Marie Nyan, 26, whose mother died of Ebola, carries her son Nathaniel Edward, 2, to an
ambulance after showing signs of Ebola infection in the village of Freeman Reserve, about 30
miles north of Monrovia, Liberia, Tuesday Sept. 30, 2014.
Three members of District 13 ambulance service traveled to the village to pickup six suspected
Ebola sufferers that had been quarantined. Aid donations from western countries are still inadequate, as the international community tries to increase the ability to care for the spiraling number

of people infected with the disease which has hit Liberia the hardest.

DALLAS (AP) — A Dallas
emergency room sent a man
with Ebola home last week,
even though he told a nurse
that he had been in disease-ravaged West Africa, and officials
at the hospital are considering
if they would have acted differently had the entire medical
staff been aware.
The decision by Texas
Health Presbyterian Hospital
to release the patient, who had
recently arrived from Liberia,
could have put others at risk
of exposure to Ebola before
the man went back to the ER
a couple of days later when his
condition worsened.
A nine-member team of
federal health officials was
tracking anyone who had close
contact with the man after he
fell ill on Sept. 24. The group
of 12 to 18 people included
three members of the ambulance crew that took him to the
hospital, as well as a handful of
schoolchildren. They will be
checked every day for 21 days,
the disease’s incubation period.
“That’s how we’re going
to break the chain of transmission, and that’s where our
focus has to be,” Dr. Tom
Frieden, director of the Centers for Disease Control and
Prevention, told The Associated Press Wednesday.
The CDC reminded health
care providers to ask patients
with symptoms if they’ve traveled recently. The American
College of Emergency Physicians planned to alert its members. The patient explained to a
nurse last Thursday that he was
visiting the U.S. from Africa,
but that information was not
widely shared, said Dr. Mark
Lester, who works for the hospital’s parent company.
“Regretfully, that information was not fully communicated” throughout the medical
team, Lester said. Instead, the
man was diagnosed with a lowrisk infection and sent home.
He was prescribed antibiotics, according to his sister,
Mai Wureh, who identified her
brother, Thomas Eric Duncan,
as the infected man in an interview with The Associated Press.
Texas Health Presbyterian
Hospital is reviewing how the
situation would have been handled if all staff had been aware
of the man’s circumstances.
“(Hospital officials) told
me that is something they are
looking into,” hospital spokeswoman Candace White said.
David Wright, regional
director of the U.S. Centers
for Medicare & Medicaid Services, wouldn’t say if the hospital was under investigation.
Wright said that in cases they
do handle, federal investigators examine if a hospital complied with a “reasonable physician standard” in deciding
whether to admit a patient with
a potential medical emergency.
“It comes down to whether
the hospital did the proper
screening ... or not,” he said.

Judge dismisses a challenge
to Rep. Calvin Say residency
HONOLULU (AP) — A lawsuit brought by six voters in
Palolo can’t challenge the residency of state Rep. Calvin Say,
a state judge said Tuesday.
Circuit Court Judge Karen Nakasone ruled that the state
House has the exclusive power to determine qualifications of
its members, the Honolulu Star-Advertiser reported. If courts
interfere before the House investigates a complaint against Say
or exercises its power, it “would not only be unconstitutional,
but also premature, unwise and inefficacious,” Nakasone said.
The Palolo voters claimed Say does not live in the district he
has represented since 1976. The Hawaii Constitution requires
lawmakers to be qualified voters who live in districts they represent. Say has said his primary residence is Palolo but that
he spends time with family in Pauoa Valley. Three previous
residency challenges were also unsuccessful.
Say, a Democrat and former House speaker, and the state
House argued that only the House has the jurisdiction. “I am
pleased with the court’s decision today,” Say said in a prepared
statement. “I have long maintained that I am a lifelong resident
of the district and have had the privilege of serving the district
since 1976. Hopefully today’s ruling will put a conclusion to
this debate so we can focus on the many issues facing the state.”
Attorney Lance Collins said the six voters will probably
appeal. “I think that she erred,” he said of the judge. “And my
clients want their day in court.”
Nakasone previously ruled that Say’s residency should be
decided by the city clerk, who oversees voter registration. The
state Intermediate Court of Appeals in April ruled that the
courts have jurisdiction over the constitutional question of lawmaker qualifications and sent the challenge back to Nakasone.
Nakasone ruled courts have jurisdiction to interpret constitutional provisions but that the current case was a political
matter exempt from judicial review.
➧ Ebola-infected patient…
Continued from page B9
In Texas, neither the ambulance crew nor the children showed
any symptoms and were being monitored at home. It was not
clear how Duncan knew the children, but his sister said he had
been visiting with family, including two nephews.
Ebola symptoms can include fever, muscle pain, vomiting
and bleeding, and can appear as long as 21 days after exposure
to the virus. The disease is not contagious until symptoms begin.
It spreads only by close contact with an infected person’s bodily
fluids. The man left Liberia on Sept. 19, flying from Brussels to
Dulles Airport near Washington. He then boarded a flight for
Dallas-Fort Worth, according to airlines, and arrived the next day.
He started feeling ill four or five days later, Frieden said.
The CDC sent a team to the airport in the Liberian capital,
Monrovia, on Wednesday to make sure health officials there
are screening passengers properly. All people traveling from
the outbreak zone are supposed to be checked for fever and
asked about their travel history before being allowed to leave.
Plastic buckets filled with chlorinated water for hand-washing
are present throughout the airport. “There were no signs of any
disease when the gentleman boarded the flight,” said Dr. Tom
Kenyon, director of the CDC’s Center for Global Health. “This
was not a failure of the screening process at the airport.”
Since the man had no symptoms on the plane, the CDC
stressed there is no risk to his fellow passengers. Tests designed
to detect the virus in the bloodstream are not typically performed
on people who don’t yet have symptoms, because tests done too
early may miss the diagnosis, Frieden said.
Hospitals have been on the lookout: The CDC has received 94
inquiries from states about illnesses that initially were suspected
to be Ebola, but after taking travel histories and doing some other
work, most were ruled out. Of the 13 people who actually underwent testing, only one — the Dallas patient — tested positive.
The Dallas apartment complex where Duncan was believed
to be staying was cordoned off Wednesday, and the management was turning away visitors. TV cameras lined the fence of
the parking lot, and at least one helicopter hovered overhead.
Four American aid workers who became infected in West
Africa have been flown back to the U.S. for treatment after they
became sick. Three have recovered.

Burger King, ex-soldier
at odds over needle claim
HONOLULU (AP) — The former soldier suing Burger King because he swallowed
needles in a sandwich said he didn’t return to
Hawaii for a settlement conference because he
had to work and his lawyers say the corporation
hasn’t taken negotiations seriously.
It’s the latest in a squabble between the parties about who is to blame for failed attempts to
settle the lawsuit by Clark Bartholomew, who
said he was injured when he bit into a Triple
Stacker purchased from a Burger King on a
Hawaii base in 2010. His lawsuit said one needle
pierced his tongue and another was lodged in his
small intestine. An attorney for Miami-based
Burger King filed a motion last month asking for
a dismissal, a fine and attorney’s fees because
Bartholomew didn’t attend the Sept. 10 settlement conference in federal court in Honolulu.
Bartholomew, who has since medically
retired from the Army and lives in Chantilly,
Virginia, said in a declaration filed in court earlier this week that he didn’t attend because he
recently started working as a U.S. Park Police
dispatcher and couldn’t take time off.
“Since I was a new employee, I had no time
on the books to take time off to fly from Virginia
to Hawaii, for the settlement conference,” he
said. He apologized to the court and said he and
his wife would have been available by phone.
Burger King is “bullying a represented opponent for not appearing at a settlement conference,” Bartholomew’s lawyers argued in court
documents. The attorneys say Burger King violated court orders to exchange written offers
and discuss a settlement before the conference.
Grant Kidani, the Honolulu attorney representing Burger King, couldn’t immediately be
reached for comment Wednesday.
Drops in Hilo higher
education enrollment
HILO, Hawaii (AP) — The University of
Hawaii’s Hilo campus has the largest drop in
enrollment across the system. This fall is the
second year of enrollment declines for the Hilo
campus. As of Tuesday, Hilo saw a 2.9 percent
drop, while the flagship Manoa campus had a
2.5 percent decrease. The system’s new West
Oahu campus saw enrollment increase by 12.7
percent. Hilo’s Hawaii Community College
experienced enrollment declines for three years
in a row. The college saw a 6.4 percent drop this
year. All seven of the state’s community colleges saw enrollment declines this year, ranging
from 2.9 percent to 6.9 percent.
UH-Hilo Chancellor Donald Straney told
the Hawaii Tribune-Herald that campuses in
Hawaii and across the country have taken a hit
in enrollment as the economy improves and
students opt to enter the job force. “We’re the
same percentage down this year as we were last
year,” he said. “It’s a (trend) that’s going around
all campuses. ... We had hoped to hold even,
but the demography worked against us.” The
decrease means his campus will lose about a $1
million in anticipated revenue, Straney said.
“It’s a significant amount of money, but
we’re not anticipating we’ll have to reduce budgets this year,” he said. He said departments
will be asked to hold off on spending about 1
percent of their budgets until the impact of the
reduction in revenue is clearer.
Straney said the university is trying to
improve freshman retention. He said the plan is
to offer more activities during the day and evening to help students become more connected
to the university community. Freshman retention between the fall semester and end of spring
semester was 92 percent, he said. But the retention rate drops to 70 percent at the beginning of
sophomore year.
3 Hawaii schools earn
Blue Ribbon distinction
HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Education Secretary Arne Duncan is recognizing three Hawaii
schools for academic excellence or for making
progress in closing achievement gaps among
students. Haleiwa Elementary, Red Hill Elementary in Honolulu and Ernest Bowen deSilva
in Hilo are Hawaii’s National Blue Ribbon
Schools for 2014.
The U.S. Education Department will honor
the 287 public and 50 private schools given
the distinction nationwide at a ceremony next
month in Washington, D.C.
Duncan says the schools fulfill the promise
of an American education that all students can
succeed no matter where they’re from.
The state Department of Education says
E.B. deSilva becomes the first neighbor island
school to be named a Blue Ribbon School since
Holualoa Elementary in Kona in 2008.
Big Island officials question
handling of election
KAILUA-KONA, Hawaii (AP) — Officials
on Hawaii’s Big Island are asking why the
results of Hawaii’s primary election weren’t
thrown out. West Hawaii Today reported that
local officials are pressing for details on how
the general election will be handled.
They’re concerned about Puna, which is
threatened by a lava flow. It’s the same area
that was hit hard by Tropical Storm Iselle right
before Hawaii’s primary.
State Sen. Russell Ruderman said election
officials were “absurdly out of touch” with the
situation in Puna after the storm, which downed
hundreds of trees and cut power lines.
Some polling stations in the area were closed
on Election Day because of the damage. Others
remained open, which critics say was a poor
decision.
Ruderman says it’s inexcusable that election officers changed direction with little notice
on how the region’s residents would cast their
votes. “We gave people a change in official
notification, (with just) three days’ notice,”
Ruderman said. “That’s not fair. I can’t believe
that it’s legal.”
County Clerk Stewart Maeda said once the
election was underway, only the governor could
extend voting hours.
“In hindsight, we probably would have
closed those polling places (in other parts of
Puna) as well,” Maeda said.
Ruderman and Councilwoman Brenda Ford
asked Maeda to consider doing only mail-in
ballots for the upcoming General Election.
Maui official skeptical
on future power plan
WAILUKU, Hawaii (AP) — A Maui
County official is expressing reservations about
the local utility company’s plans to reduce customer electric bills.
Maui County Energy Commissioner Doug
McLeod says a proposal by Maui Electric Co.
may rely too much on liquefied natural gas and
not enough on renewable energy.
The Maui News reports McLeod submitted
comments to the Hawaii Public Utilities Commission for the Mayor’s Office of Economic
Development.
McLeod says fueling power plants with liquefied natural gas instead of diesel will lower
costs in the short term. But he says environmental concerns remain over obtaining natural
gas through fracking, or extraction by highpressure injection of water, sand and chemicals
into tight-rock formations.
McLeod says cost savings also could come
from renewable energy but Maui Electric’s
plans don’t adequately address renewable
energy development.
Secret Service chief quits
job due to security lapses
WASHINGTON (AP) — Secret Service Director Julia Pierson abruptly resigned
Wednesday in the face of multiple revelations of
security breaches, bumbling in her agency and
rapidly eroding confidence that the president and
his family were being kept safe.
President Barack Obama “concluded new
leadership of that agency was required,” said
spokesman Josh Earnest.
High-ranking lawmakers from both parties
had urged her to step down after her poorly
received testimony to Congress a day earlier —
and revelation of yet another security problem:
Obama had shared an elevator in Atlanta last
month with an armed guard who was not authorized to be around him.
That appeared to be the last straw that crumbled trust in her leadership in the White House.
Earnest said Obama and his staff did not learn
about that breach until just before it was made
public in news reports Tuesday.
“Today Julia Pierson, the director of the
United States Secret Service, offered her resignation, and I accepted it,” Homeland Security
Secretary Jeh Johnson said in a statement. He
announced that Joseph Clancy, retired head of
the agency’s Presidential Protective Division,
would come out of retirement to lead the Secret
Service temporarily.
Taking further steps to restore trust in the
beleaguered agency, Johnson also outlined an
independent inquiry into the agency’s operations.
That trust was shaken by a series of failures in
the agency’s critical job of protecting the president, including a breach Sept. 19, when a knifecarrying man climbed over the White House
fence on Pennsylvania Avenue and made it deep
into the executive mansion before being stopped.
Republicans quickly served notice that Pierson’s resignation and the inquiry ordered by
Johnson would not end their investigation.
“The Oversight Committee will continue to
examine clear and serious agency failures at the
Secret Service,” said the panel’s chairman, Rep.
Darrell Issa, R-Calif. “Problems at the Secret Service pre-date Ms. Pierson’s tenure as director, and
her resignation certainly does not resolve them.”
In an interview with Bloomberg News after
her resignation was announced, Pierson said she
recognized that “Congress has lost confidence in
my ability to run the agency.”
Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, a leader of the
congressional inquiry, called her resignation “the
right thing to do, it had to happen, but there are
some systemic challenges that must be addressed.”
Some revelations came from whistleblowers
who contacted Chaffetz, and he suggested more
damaging stories may emerge. “Unfortunately
there are more out there and we’ll see how that
goes,” he said.
After a congressional hearing Tuesday into
the Sept. 19 breach and an earlier one, reports
emerged of still another. Earlier in September,
Obama had shared an elevator in Atlanta with
a private guard who was not authorized to be
around him with a gun. That was the first known
Secret Service failure to unfold in the presence
of the president. The first family was not at the
White House when the recent intruder entered.
Obama had not been told about it previously,
Earnest said. This, despite Pierson’s statement to
the committee that she briefs the president “100
percent of the time” about threats to his personal
security and those at the White House. She said
the only time she had briefed him this year was
after the Sept. 19 White House intrusion.
The man accused of running into the White
House on Sept. 19, Omar J. Gonzalez, pleaded not
guilty Wednesday in a brief appearance in federal court. He is accused of unlawfully entering
a restricted building while carrying a deadly
weapon, which is a federal charge, and two violations of District of Columbia law. Wearing a
standard prison-issue jump suit, Gonzalez sat
attentively at the defense table but did not address
the court as his lawyer entered the plea.
Rep. Elijah Cummings, top Democrat on
the House Oversight Committee, said in multiple interviews Wednesday that Pierson was no
longer the best person to lead the Secret Service.
She is the latest administration official to
leave in the midst of controversy. Others include:
— Veterans Affairs Secretary Eric Shinseki, who resigned in May, taking the blame for
what he decried as a “lack of integrity” in the
sprawling health care system for the nation’s
military veterans.
— Health and Human Services Secretary
Kathleen Sebelius, who, as the “Obamacare”
insurance marketplace failed spectacularly in
its launch, stayed on to oversee repairs before
Obama accepted her resignation months later.
Tweet about Ferguson’s
grand jury sparks probe
ST. LOUIS (AP) — Prosecutors are investigating a Twitter
post claiming that grand jurors hearing evidence in the police
shooting of an unarmed black 18-year-old near St. Louis haven’t
seen enough evidence to justify prosecuting the officer.
The Twitter user claimed in a tweet posted Wednesday that a
friend serving on the grand jury said the panel lacked evidence
to warrant an arrest of Darren Wilson, the white officer who shot
Michael Brown on Aug. 9. The tweet and its Twitter account
were deleted by Wednesday evening. Ed Magee, spokesman for
St. Louis County prosecutor Bob McCulloch, said there was no
evidence to suggest information in the tweet was credible.
The AP has not confirmed the identity of the Twitter user.
The grand jury is expected to complete its work by midOctober or early November. The proceedings are conducted in
secret, and a juror’s sharing of information with outsiders would
likely be considered misconduct.
Brown’s killing sparked nightly scenes of unrest in Ferguson
and stoked national debate over how white police officers handle
blacks in their communities.
Critics have called on McCulloch to either step aside or ask
Gov. Jay Nixon to appoint a special prosecutor, citing concerns
about whether McCulloch could fairly oversee the case. McCulloch’s father was a police officer who was killed in the line of
duty when McCulloch was a child, and he has many relatives who
work in law enforcement.
McCulloch, who has been the county’s elected prosecutor
for more than two decades, could have filed charges himself but
chose to take the case to a grand jury to decide whether the use of
lethal force was justified.

IN LINE By Rob Lee
Happy Birthday: Don’t leave anything to
chance. Size up whatever situation you face and
make the necessary changes. Actions will be necessary if you want to avoid being put in a vulnerable position. Don’t let stress lead to a force play.
The more hands-on you are, the easier it will be
to weather whatever storm you face. Stability and
responsibility should be your aim. Your numbers are
3, 11, 20, 31, 34, 39, 44.
ARIES (March 21-April 19): Ease into whatever
you do. Don’t voice your opinion if you think it might
hinder whatever situation you face. Impulsive action
will end up working against you. Focus on expanding
your skills and growing your assets. ✸✸
TAURUS (April 20-May 20): You may feel like getting away from the hustle and bustle, but look for
hidden costs before you sign up for a trip or outing that
can break your budget. Simplicity and moderation will
help you keep your life running smoothly. ✸✸✸✸✸
GEMINI (May 21-June 20): Participate, get
involved and try to make a difference. Fixing up your
surroundings and hosting a party will encourage
you to be a better person mentally, emotionally and
physically. Love is highlighted. ✸✸✸
CANCER (June 21-July 22): Emotional matters
will surface. Either pay off or collect on old debts.
Address situations that are bringing you down and
do your best to cut corners wherever possible if it
helps you feel less stressed. Discipline is the key to
a better lifestyle. ✸✸✸
LEO (July 23-Aug. 22): Engage in something
that interests or entertains you. Get out of the house
and away from any negativity you’ve been living
with. Physical activity will do you good and bring
you in contact with someone special. Romance will
improve your personal life. ✸✸✸
VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22): You can call the shots
and take control of your interests. Get involved in
events that will connect you to interesting people.
Don’t give in to someone who is putting demands
on you or using emotional tactics to take advantage
of others. ✸✸✸✸✸
LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22): Question your current
personal situation. Don’t make abrupt changes just
because someone wants you to. Protect your health
and financial position, and refrain from letting anyone
disrupt your home environment. Ask for assistance,
and you will receive help. ✸✸
SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21): A work-related situation is likely to escalate into something bigger than
you anticipated. Be ready to counter any situation
that has the potential to backfire or become a moneypit. Your intuition is strong and can help you make
a wise choice. ✸✸✸✸
SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21): You’ve got
a good handle on what will work and what won’t,
but if you allow your emotions to take over, you will
lose sight of your goal. Changes to your domestic
situation look promising. Money is heading your
way. ✸✸✸
CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19): Hide your emotions, stay composed and listen carefully to what
everyone around you says. Don’t let impulse take
over when it’s best to sit and wait until you have a
better understanding of what’s going on. Strive for
stability, not disruption. ✸✸✸
AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18): Take care of
personal business. If you leave your affairs in
someone else’s hands, you will be disappointed.
A health matter or physical improvement you want
to make can be taken care of successfully. Love is
on the rise. ✸✸✸
PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20): Consider your attributes and dreams, and go after your goals. Get your
strategy set and put your clear-cut methods to work.
Financial, legal and medical matters can be dealt
with successfully. You will instinctively know what
move to make. ✸✸✸✸
Birthday Baby: You are curious and original. You
are methodical, intense and progressive.
Dear Abby
by Abigail Van Buren
MEDICATIONS KEPT UNDER LOCK AND KEY ENSURE KIDS’ SAFETY
DEAR ABBY: You missed the chance to communicate a life-or-death message to your readers when
you answered a letter from an “Ohio Grandma”
(July 14). Your reply understated the importance of
storing medications properly and safely. What if the
grandmother had placed a loaded GUN on the desk
instead of medications? Both can produce just as
deadly a result.
And why didn’t those meds have safety lids?
Putting them in a suitcase is not enough. They
should be stored out of reach, preferably secured
with a safety lock. Or better yet, the parents should
be told you have dangerous substances with you -and ASKED where you can store them. -- MOM OF
A TODDLER IN NEW JERSEY
DEAR MOM: I was scolded for not placing more
emphasis on the safety issue. However, the question I was asked was, “Are we obligated to help
with more of the medical expenses (for the ER visit)
because we have already helped (contributed several hundred dollars) and I don’t think it’s our job to
teach our grandchild boundaries?” So that was the
issue on which I focused. Read on:
DEAR ABBY: You dropped the ball. No 3-year-old
will respect a closed door all of the time. Grandma
and Grandpa are responsible for the safe-keeping of
their meds while in the child’s and even the grandparents’ home. Bottles that rattle and pretty colors in
a bottle that look like candy will attract any little kid.
Grandma and Grandpa should be happy they aren’t
helping to pay for a funeral instead of an ER visit.
Here are the “rules”:
1. All medications should be in kid-proof
containers.
2. All medications and OTC drugs should be kept
out of a curious child’s climbing area.
3. Poison Control numbers should be posted on
the fridge.
4. Use the original container (NOT one of those
daily dosage containers) and know how many pills
are in it. Be sure you know the name, strength and
dosage for each medication. Just telling the hospital
that it’s for “blood pressure” doesn’t tell them what it
is or how to treat an overdose.
5. NEVER tell the kids that medication is candy!
6. You are the adult. Don’t expect any child -or teen -- to respect your private property when
it comes to medication. -- MESQUITE, TEXAS,
GRANDMA
DEAR ABBY: “Ohio Grandma’s” story of an
emergency room visit for suspected medication poisoning is all too common. In 2011, 67,700 toddlers
were seen for accidental medication exposure. Of
these, 12,390 required hospitalization. Children 13 to
24 months of age accounted for 68 percent of these
visits. In ER visits where information was obtained,
38 percent involved grandparents’ medications, 31
percent the mother’s medications, 12 percent a sibling’s, 8 percent the father’s and 5 percent an aunt’s
or uncle’s medication. Family members MUST take
precautions to keep their meds out of children’s
hands. I keep mine under lock and key with the key
in my possession whenever I visit my grandchildren.
While I agree with you that children should be
taught boundaries and to respect the possessions of
others, I believe we have a responsibility to provide
a safe environment, especially when we are visiting
or when children are visiting us. The consequences
of failing to do that can be tragic. -- PEDIATRICIAN
AND GRANDMOTHER IN MAINE
