discover a rich history
The forts in and around Rochester were
created to counter the threat from
Napoleon’s army during the Napoleonic Wars
from 1799 to 1815. Defending the Medway
and the Royal Navy Dockyards where Admiral
Nelson’s flagship The Victory was built, each
location was carefully chosen for their
commanding position and views.
The site of Fort Pitt saw another of Britain’s
history-makers, Florence Nightingale, begin
the first Army Medical School. Queen
Victoria and Prince Albert made visits here
during the Crimean War. Charles Dickens’
beloved Rochester is frequently mentioned
in his novels, and the duel in The Pickwick
Papers took place on the brow of Fort Pitt Hill.

In 1946 John and Russell Bell, newly demobbed, joined their father
John T. Bell in a small family owned housebuilding business in
Newcastle upon Tyne. From the very beginning John T. Bell & Sons,
