What is a map? - Manhattan Press (H.K.)
How do we use maps and plans to
find our way?
William lives in Fanling. He has just graduated from primary
school. He will study in a secondary school in Sheung Shui in
the coming school year.
Today he is going to Sheung Shui to find his new
school and buy textbooks. William walks from Sheung Shui
Station with a map (Figure 1.1).
1
In Figure 1.1, circle the Sheung Shui Station and
William’s school.
2
William passes through sites A, B and C. Mark his
possible route in red.

After locating his school, William goes to Landmark
North (Figure 1.2) to buy textbooks for the coming
school year. Mark the shortest route from his school
to Landmark North in Figure 1.1.
4
At the entrance of the fourth floor of Landmark
North, he finds the following floor plan (Figure 1.3).
(a) Where is the bookstore? Shade it with a pencil.
(b) Mark the shortest route William can take to
the bookstore in Figure 1.3.

If I could fly...
William dreamt last night that he rode on a big bird and saw his home from the sky. Figure
1.4 shows what he saw.

What did William see from the sky?
2
Suppose you were asked to draw a map to show what William saw in his dream. Do you
think which things should be drawn on the map?
We can draw the major features that William has seen on a piece of paper. This is a map.
Figure 1.5 is a map showing the same area seen by William. So a map is a drawing that
shows the major features of a place as seen vertically from above. We need a map to find
the places that we are not familiar with.

Where is the hall? Where is my classroom?
William is very excited since today is the
first day of school. He has to go to the
hall first to find out which class he has
been allocated to. Then he has to go to
his classroom. However, he does not know
where the hall and his classroom are.

In Figure 1.6, circle the hall.
2
William is allocated to F.1C. In Figure 1.6, circle his classroom.
*3
Compare Figure 1.6 with Figure 1.5. What are the differences between a plan
and a map?
A plan is a kind of map showing a smaller area but in greater detail. William needs a map
of Sheung Shui to find the location of his school. However, when he wants to find the
location of his classroom, he needs a plan of his school.
