Iowa Civil War Soldiers Who Were Members of the Grand Army of
the Republic, Department of Oregon

This is the third in a series of articles which use records of the Grand Army of the Republic (aka the
GAR) to track the post-war movements of Iowa’s Civil War veterans. The first dealt with those Iowa
Civil War soldiers who were members of the GAR in Colorado and Wyoming; the second dealt with
those veterans who were members of the Department of California.1 The GAR was the largest veterans’
organization to appear after the conflict. During its active years, the GAR had a significant influence on
politics, law, and social programs in the United States. Memorial Day was established as a national
holiday, five GAR members were elected President of the United States, many of the Governors in the
northern states were members, soldiers' homes were founded, veterans’ relief programs were
established and ever more valuable pensions were given to the Union veterans.
National
Encampments were yearly meetings that attracted over 25,000 veterans in the 1890’s. By 1890 when
the GAR was reaching its peak, membership reached almost 500,000.2
The GAR in Oregon was organized on 28 Sep 1882. At one time or another there were 77 Posts within
the Department. Virtually any town of appreciable size had a functioning Post. Larger cities, such as
Portland (with at least seven) had multiple Posts.3,4
GAR records can be very useful in tracking the post-war movements of Union Civil War veterans.
Unfortunately many original records from local Posts have been lost and only a few Post and
Departmental records were published. Those that were tend to be difficult to locate. This article is
based on a relatively scarce roster of the then existing 61 Posts in the Department of Oregon published
in 1919.5
The following information of interest to genealogists is provided for each soldier (if available):

Birth – Date (from burial or Soldiers’ Home records) and location

Residence – Residence at time of enlistment or location credited to

Service – Brief synopsis of service; service in multiple units is included. Other service highlights
such as instances of wounding or being captured are also noted.

Widow – Name of surviving spouse from pension application

Death – Date and location

Burial – Cemetery and either city or county

Miscellaneous – Membership in the Military Order of the Loyal Legion of the United States
(MOLLUS, a veteran’s organization for officers) and admissions to National Soldier’s Homes
It is also important to note what this list is not. It is not a complete list of Iowa Civil War veterans who
resided at one time or another in the area covered by the Department of Oregon. While the GAR was
the largest Civil War veterans’ organization, not all veterans belonged to it. Whether due to political
reasons, absence of a conveniently located local Post or other reasons, some veterans chose to
eschew membership. This is also not a complete list of Iowa veterans who were members of the GAR

in the Department of Oregon over the entire period of the organization’s existence. This list is based on
a roster that is essentially a snapshot of the membership at a distinct point in time. Other veterans may
have been members, but moved or relocated prior to the dates of the underlying rosters. Others may
have migrated to Oregon and joined the local GAR at other times.

Father of 33 Children, All Single births, 1827-1877

We genealogists are well aware how large families were. Census lists and family group sheets
commonly show a child born every other year for many families. If there is a gap, it is most likely
because an infant had died. Few parents had more than 18 or 20 children, however. The child-bearing
years for a mother limited that, if for no other reason. But Stanford Doud became a father 33 times, in
succession with three wives.
This fertility was due in part because his wives were much younger than he. His first wife was
only 13 and he was 22, his second wife was 22 and he was 32, and his third wife was 16 when he was
48. He was 23 when his first child was born and 72 when his last baby arrived. His oldest child was 50
when the 33rd child was born.
When I joined the Marion County Pioneer Cemetery Commission a few years ago, I made it a goal
to visit every cemetery in the county. When I came across the Stanford Doud Cemetery north of
Bussey, I noticed a gravestone, a memorial actually, which reads, “IN MEMORY OF STANFORD
DOUD BORN IN PA. 1804. DIED AND BURIED AT ELDON, IA IN 1891. HE HOMESTEADED HERE
IN 1843. THIS IS 1ST CEM. IN LIBERTY TWP. HE WAS ELECTED 1ST CO. SURVEYOR AND CLERK
OF 1ST COMM. COURT. HE MARRIED 3 TIMES AND WAS FATHER OF 33 CHILDREN.” This
piqued my interest. What kind of family was this? As it turns out, much has been written about the
Doud people by relatives. Dedicated descendants restored this cemetery. In the 1950’s it was totally
neglected, even though it lay alongside a road. “It was a wilderness of vines, dead trees, underbrush,
logs and saplings. No stones remained standing. Many were broken and some illegible. Some buried
under three and four inches of dirt.”1 In 1954 Lloyd Godfrey and his sister, Mae Gladson, descendants
of Stanford Doud, began steps to restore this site. Before and after photographs show how this
cemetery was restored. Thirteen new granite markers were set and three old marble gravestones were
reset. On Memorial Day, 1963, a memorial service was held attended by approximately 40
descendants and friends.2
Stanford Doud was a pioneer and adventurer. He was born in Pennsylvania, lived in Ohio when a
teenager and young man, lived in Van Buren and Marion Counties here in Iowa, and joined the
stampede to the Gold Rush in California in 1850! He was a farmer, surveyor, cabinet maker, stone
cutter, justice of the peace. Two of his brothers, David and Alden, were state legislators.3 The town of
Douds in Van Buren County is named after this Doud family, where they arrived in 1841. 4 Stanford’s
mother, Fear Beaumont, was third great granddaughter of John Alden of the Mayflower Pilgrims in
Massachusetts. Stanford’s grandfather, Isaiah Beaumont, served in the Revolutionary War with
General Washington at Valley Forge.5
Because they were among the first pioneer settlers in this part of the country, the Douds had
frequent contact with Indians. The Indians often came to their house asking for food. Stanford’s
daughter, Susan, remembered seeing the dead bodies of Indians tied high up in the trees so they
would be closer to their heavenly hunting ground. The Douds only had candles to light the darkness.
Honey from bee hives in trees was their sugar. They took their corn to Eddyville, 20 miles east, to be
ground into meal. But education was important and home schooling was their education in these early
days before country schools. The Doud children told of the prairie covered with beautiful wild flowers. 6
In a large family such as this, there is certain to be conflicting and unrecorded information. What’s
notable here, are the conflicts in original records. Stanford Doud is shown in two different places in
both the 1850 and 1885 censuses. Other census information conflicts with dates in family tradition. I
have presented this family in chronological order. A good photograph of Stanford has been saved, but
there doesn’t seem to be any known pictures for his third wife. The family seemed to have some sense
of humor for their children’s names: Milo & Philo, Retta & Zetta, and four named after states:
Pennsylvania, Ohio, Iowa, Virginia. There was also Texana. This writer has photographed all

gravestones in Stanford Doud Cemetery and posted them on the Findagrave website. The cemetery is
barely a mile and a half west of the Mahaska County line, on Reagan Street in Section 2 in Liberty
Township, Marion County.
Margaret Diane Gladson, great great granddaughter of Stanford Doud, Sr., recently donated a
sewing rocker, with caned back seat made by him for his daughter in 1842, to the Marion County
Historical Society Museum in Knoxville, Iowa.
Stanford Doud Chronology
1804, June 10, Stanford Doud born, Luzerne County, PA, son of David Doud and Fear Beaumont. He
had six younger brothers and one younger sister. He was named after his great grandmother,
Rebecca Stanford.7
1817, Stanford Doud, age 13, moved to Licking County, OH.8
1826, Stanford Doud, 22, married Sarah Fanisher Converse, age 13, born December 24, 1812. She
was third child of Sanford Converse and Alice Searle, which family moved from Bridport, VT to
Licking County in 1814. Sarah died January 17, 1834, age 21.9 She was the mother of 6 children,
born in her fourteenth through twenty-first years. When she died, the oldest of her motherless
children would have been only age 6.
1827, October 23, #1 child, Elois Millisa Doud born, Licking County, OH.10 She married September
17, 184311, died October 18, 1853, age 25, buried Stanford Doud Cemetery. 12 Husband, Joshua
Way, born November 16, 1821, Wayne County, IN, died May 19, 1895 Bussey, IA, buried Sand
Ridge Cemetery, Jefferson Twp, Mahaska County, IA.13 Their third child, Taylor Way, March 3,
1849-October 7, 1850, buried Stanford Doud Cemetery.14 She was the mother of five children.15
1829, #2 child, Washington Cicero Doud, born, St. Albans, Licking County, OH.16 He married Ann.
He died March 14, 1885, Allegany, Sierra County, CA, buried Downieville Cemetery.17 He went with
his father to the California Gold Rush (see 1850 below). His obituary philosophized much about
him, “We have been intimately acquainted with Mr. Doud for the past twenty years, and have always
found him honorable and upright in all his dealings….He had no religious belief as far as we know.
Certain it is that he did not believe in the inspiration of revealed religion…..he could not fear that
which he did not believe to exist. With such belief, or want of belief, it was not surprising that he
should request that no form or ceremony of the Church should enter into the last rites which is
customary for those who remain, to perform over those who have passed on…..that there be no
ceremony at the grave.” The local interest column on the same page listed several people who
attended his funeral. He had no children.18
1830, April 7, #3 child, Stanford Doud, Jr., born, Licking County, OH.19 He married (1) Martha A.
Darnell, September 7, 1851, Mahaska County.20 She was born 1831, died September 7, 1855,
buried Stanford Doud Cemetery. She was pregnant when bitten by a rattlesnake encountered in
their root cellar.21 He married (2) Eliza Burton, July 31, 1861, Marion County,22 who was born
September 30, 1844, died October 16, 1922, buried Greenlawn Cemetery, Bussey, IA.23 He died
September 20, 1902, age 72, buried Greenlawn.24 Father of 10 children.25
1831 (?), #4 child, Ohio Doud, born.26 No further record for her.
1833, February 22, #5 child, Sally H. Doud, born, Licking County, OH.27 She married Nathaniel G.
Teas, December 11, 1851, Marion County.28 She died November 9, 1854, age 21 buried Stanford
Doud Cemetery.29 Their child, Celia Teas, April 25, 1854-March 11, 1855, also buried there.30 He
must have been a man of adventure, too. He went to the Gold Rush with the Douds, and is in the
1850 census with them.31 When he returned, he married as above, and after his first wife died,
married Sarah Johnson, December 10, 1856, Monroe County.32 In the 1860 census, he is found in
Monroe County, Cedar Township, post office Maryville (Marion County) with his wife and two young
daughters.33 He enlisted in the Civil War, February 8, 1862, and was killed in action at Vicksburg,
Mississippi, May 22, 1863, age about 35.34
1834, #6 child, Letharissa Doud, born, Licking County, OH.35 She married, March 3, 1853, age 18/19,
William Burton, Mahaska County.36 He was born September 24, 1832, Covington, IN, died April 22,

67. He married, Eva Egbert, May 21, 1900, and later divorced. He was the stepfather of one
daughter.118
Buried in Riverside Cemetery, Marshalltown.119 His obituary notes that he was
survived by his divorced wife and that he was born in Van Buren County. See below.

1871, #25 child, Richard Amherst Doud, or William Amherst Doud, born, Van Buren County, died
March 21, 1921, Marshalltown, IA, buried Timber Creek Cemetery, Marshall County. His gravestone
reads, “Amherst Doud 1871-1921.” 127 No obituary found. He is already in the 1870 census, age
3,126 and later censuses agree, more or less, than he was born before 1871. He is always shown as
Amherst Doud or William A. Doud. 1900 census says he was born Jan 1866.145 His mother’s
brother, was Amhurst Marvin Darnell, who lived in Marion County,128 and undoubtedly the source for
the name, Amherst.
1872, December 4, #26 child, Frank L. Doud born, died April 4 or 24, 1952.129 He married, November
12, 1905, Wapello County, Delpha Houston130 (April 22, 1886- August 8, 1957).131 Lived in Marshall
County.132 Both buried Oakview Cemetery, Albia, IA.133 No obituary found for him in either
Marshalltown or Albia papers.
1873, #27 child, Eva Doud born.134 Still living 1917.148 1900 census says she was born October,
1870.145 Family tradition says she went to Mexico.135
1875, October 13, #28 child, Fred L. “Moon” Doud born, Van Buren County, died September 1, 1957,
Ottumwa, buried Eldon Cemetery.136 He married Molly Fane and they were divorced. He had no
children137 and was the last of the 33 children to die. 1900 census says he was born October,
1873,145 which is wrong, and leaves all birth dates in this census suspect for this family.
1877, April, #29 child, Fear Doud born, died 1897 (family tradition), Wapello County.138 But she is still
in the 1900 census (see below). She was the last child born to this family, and named for her father‘s
mother, Fear Beaumont, whose mother was Fear Alden.139 Stanford was 72 & Elizabeth was 40.
She died of a self-inflicted abortion.140

enumerated alone.141 Wife and children not found, Wapello or Van Buren Counties.

1885, Iowa census, Washington Twp., Wapello County, town of Eldon. Stanford Doud 80, Elizabeth
48, William A. 18, Kate 14, Evah, 13, Frank, 11, Fred, 9, Fear, 7. This census ended for this book
on May 2, Henry Baker, Assessor.143 Here we have the second census where the Stanford Doud
family is enumerated twice in two different places! The Van Buren census is suspect to me, as
people from Douds, Leando, and Selma are enumerated on the same page. Since the census
takers were the county assessors this year did they pad the population for their county’s gain? The
1850 census is the other with Stanford shown twice (Marion County, IA, & El Dorado County, CA).
1891, October 2, Stanford Doud, Sr., died, age 87, at Eldon, buried Eldon Cemetery. The death record
lists cause of death as congestion of lungs and liver. The obituary for him was headlined, “Many
Times Father.” It noted he had been been a farmer, surveyor, cabinet maker, stone cutter, and

justice of the peace. He was a great reader. “His riches vanished and left him poor but not unloved.”

1917, June 26, Elizabeth (Darnell) Doud died at Eldon, IA. The death record shows her name as Mary
Margarette Doud, about 85, parents unknown, informant, Mrs. Frank Lambert, who would be her
daughter, Kate.147 The obituary in the Eldon Forum and Register gives her name as Mary Elizabeth
Darnel, “born about 85 years ago.” It says she was married to Stanford Doud. The 11 children who
survived are named: Milo, Philo, Rettie, Joe, Eliza, Fred, Frank, Eva, Kate, Sim and Amhurst. Sim
must be Susan. Four sons and one daughter (Kate) were with her at the end. Her obituary says she

Iowa Pioneer, Century & Statehood Certificates
The IOWA CERTIFICATE project is available for anyone whose ancestor was in Iowa during specific
time periods. Sources of proof can be census, county history, Bible record, land record, etc. The
completed application and copies of proof are filed at the library for the patrons’ use.
Application for Certificates
The Iowa Genealogical Society issues certificates to persons who are directly descended from
Iowa Pioneers. Applications must prove direct descent and prove that the ancestor settled in Iowa

By 1846, to receive a Statehood Certificate;

By 1856, to receive a Pioneer Certificate;

More than 100 years prior to the date of application, for a Century Certificate.
Applicants may apply for certificates to be issued to themselves or to other persons. The person to
whom the certificate is issued need not currently live in Iowa.
The purpose of the Certificate Program is to recognize families with Iowa roots, encourage people
to undertake genealogical research, and to provide genealogical resources for researches in our
library.
The information and application are available at the library or by sending a self-addressed stamped
envelope to IGS. You may also find the information and application on our website
http://www.iowagenealogy.org/library/research/ . The cost is $10.00 per certificate for members of
IGS and $10.00 for non-members. The certificate is suitable for framing.
