The Visitation Academy:
IB & STEM Highlight the New School Year
V
isitation Academy students and staff were
excited to learn that the Academy has been
recognized as a candidate school in the
International Baccalaureate Middle Years Programme,
IBMYP. The program will target grades 6 – 8, and
impact all grades with an increased emphasis on
professional development and a shift in teaching
style. All students will benefit from a school-wide
collaborative approach to learning. While remaining
true to Visitation’s Catholic identity, curriculum and
the unique feature of daily Mass, Visitation is posed to
embrace the next chapter in her history.
Partnered with the IB approach, STEM initiatives
across campus will serve to support the shift to
inquiry based collaborative learning. Partnerships
with local and national institutions have established
new avenues of collaboration and networking for
students and faculty alike. These pursuits have
included corporate support, intern opportunities, and
on-site events. The development of a well-equipped,
multipurpose STEM Center is underway. The marriage
of the IBMYP and a strong STEM initiative is the ideal
fit for the profile of today’s most successful students,
and will underscore Visitation’s goal to “Empower
Young Women” (since 1846)!
At Visitation Academy even the youngest students are enjoying STEM activities. Pre-K and
Kindergarten students are learning to classify mammals, reptiles, birds, and amphibians.
St. John Regional Catholic School is Off to a
Great New School Year
O
ur mission is to provide a Christ-centered environment
and an exemplary education to each and every student
within the framework of the gospel and the traditions
of the Catholic Church. The goal of our faith community is to
develop future leadership for the 21st century through academic
excellence, faith in action, and a firm foundation of Christian
virtues. Our teachers and staff strive to live out this mission every
day in order to build strong future leaders in our community as
well as our church. We were rewarded for our efforts as our most
recent alumni received many awards and honors. A large number
of our graduating students received scholarships to area high
schools and were accepted into prestigious high school programs.
We have had a busy and rewarding summer. The Maryland
Association of Environmental and Outdoor Education (MAEOE)
announced that St. John Regional Catholic School has been
certified as a 2014 Maryland Green School. Over the past two
years, our school has demonstrated and documented a continuous
effort to integrate sustainable best management practices,
environmental education curriculum, professional development
opportunities, and community engagement into our daily
operations. This certification signifies that our school has made a
commitment to developing stewards of the earth and reducing
the environmental impact of our school.
Our school has been selected for the 2014 Best of Frederick
Award in the Religious Schools category by the Frederick Award
Program for the past three years. St. John Regional Catholic School
is among a very small group of companies that have won the Best
of Frederick Award for three consecutive years. This distinction has
qualified us for the 2014 Frederick Business Hall of Fame. Each
year, the Frederick Award Program identifies companies that they
believe have achieved exceptional marketing success in their local
community and business category. These are local companies that
enhance the positive image of small business through service to
their customers and our community.
In addition, we won two
work place awards. The
first award was from The
Washington Post Top Work
Places and was based solely
on a direct survey sent to all of our employees. The second award
was a local honor, The 2014 Frederick County Best Places to Work
Awards. We were presented with The People’s Choice Award; a
survey was taken of employees and former employees of St. John
Regional Catholic School. We feel like these awards validate what
we have known for years; our employees take great pride in our
school and their commitment to our students.

About Mother Seton School
St. Thomas More Academy Launches
STREAM Program
S
t. Thomas More Academy, a Classical
Catholic school that serves students from
PreK-8th grade in Middletown, Maryland,
has launched a new initiative that integrates
many of the components of Classical education
and brings them into the 21st century. STREAM is
a program that emphasizes Science, Technology,
Religion, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics.
Many schools offer STEM programs. St. Thomas
More is taking it a step further and, in alignment
with their Classical curriculum, incorporating
Art and Religion, along with a strong focus on
Literature, History, Latin and Language Arts.
Within the Classical structure, these subjects
were already a cornerstone of St. Thomas More’s
academic program and with this new initiative,
they will continue to explore and integrate all of
their courses. The goal is to educate the whole
child; heart, mind, and soul.
As part of St. Thomas More Academy’s STREAM
initiative, students will have more opportunities
to use technology, classes will participate in
hands on science and engineering projects, and
special after school STREAM programs will be
held throughout the year to engage the entire
family. St. Thomas More offers advanced math
classes so that students may take Algebra or
Graduates of the STMA Class of 2014 pictured with Reverend
Father Taiyelolu Oyeyipo
Geometry by the end of 8th grade. Plans are in
place to partner with local businesses to bring
in outside expertise for certain projects and
St. Thomas More teachers receive on going
professional development and support that
encourages their innovation and creativity in the
classrooms. The Academy’s fine arts program
includes a history linked art studio and music
class. Guitar and piano lessons are also offered
onsite after school.
Please feel welcome to visit St. Thomas More
Academy on regularly scheduled “More
Mondays” throughout the year or join us for an
Open House on September 27th from 12 – 3pm.
