ALL SAINTS CATHOLIC CHURCH
This year of 2015-2016, our parish theme is
I know well the plans I have in mind
for you, says the LORD, … plans to
give you a future full of hope.
Jer 29:11
All Saints is a tithing parish, giving of our time, talent,
and treasure so as to give glory to God.
Today we have the opportunity to reflect upon family life.
Whether we look at our families of origin or families of which
we are now a part, through marriage, we find that family
life touches all of us. Family life is something practical yet
mysterious, something beautiful yet challenging, something
very down to earth yet giving us relationships of eternal
value. It is a place of celebration and a place of growth, even
transforming suffering at times. We are brought into this world
without our choice and brought into a family. It is through
this set of relationships of father, mother, and children, that
we find ourselves learning how to live and grow with others.
None of us has the perfect family. (If you did, then you have
probably died and gone to heaven!) The Holy Family of
Jesus, Mary, and Joseph, shows us the value and the power
of human relationships touched by grace. Jesus became
incarnate so that we would be able to see our God with a
human face. Just as we are taught to gaze upon the face of
Christ, in order to know Christ, we can gaze upon the face
of Mary and the face of Joseph. In this gaze, we discover
that they also were people who knew the dignity of everyday
ordinary work. They were people sharing their joys and
sorrows in the family.
Each new year is a time to give thanks for the past and look
forward to the new, in hope. May the Lord bless you in this
coming new year with peace and good health. May God bless
all of you in this New Year!

It is done. Once again the Fire has penetrated the earth, not
with the sudden crash of thunderbolt, riving the mountain
tops: does the Master break down doors to enter his own
home? Without earthquake, or thunderclap: the flame has lit
up the whole world from within.
— Pierre Teilhard de Chardin, S.J.
Teilhard de Chardin reflected on the
incarnation and birth of Christ. We can
do the same — and more — as we pray
before our Eucharistic Lord. Take one
hour before the Blessed Sacrament
exposed for public prayer in our chapel.

Nory de Guzman, a parishioner, shares this story of Dec. 14:
These resolutions were from a few years ago, but still would
be good for 2016!
What have you done for your marriage today?
New Year’s Resolutions for Couples
What can you do for your marriage in 2016? Try making a
New Year’s resolution to improve your relationship. Here are
some ideas to get started:
•
Schedule several “Date Nights” for the first few months
of the year.
•
Would you like to improve your communication skills?
Start by taking one or more of our Marriage Quizzes.
•
Draw up your 2016 household budget together. Discuss
spending priorities, including charitable donations.
•
Take turns selecting a favorite Scripture passage to pray
about each week. Share your reflections with each other.
•
Resolve to read at least one book on how to strengthen
your relationship. Unsure where to start? Browse through
the archived book reviews.
•
While it’s important to strengthen the marriage
relationship, marriage is also a sacrament of service. It’s
true that marriage benefits the couple, but it’s also good
for their family, community, and the Church. Resolve
to do at least one service activity this year, as a family
or a couple. Perhaps it’s bringing canned goods to the
local food pantry on a regular basis or helping out with a
parish fundraising project.
I feel so blessed. The Year of Mercy just started and
I already received mercy. Last night a group of high
school students from All Saints came to our house
and sang carols for me and my husband. Gillian who
had been bringing me the Eucharist had told them that
I just had surgery so they decided to bring us some
Christmas cheer. I was a little apprehensive when I
got the call about it so I asked if they are doing this
to raise funds for some cause. In my mind I thought
that whatever I can give them will probably be much
less than what others would. But I was told, “No, they
do not expect anything.” They only want to sing for us
to help alleviate the tediousness of my condition. And
so they came, a whole lot of young, joyful teenagers
on a Sunday evening when most other teenagers were
probably doing homework, partying, or worse ….
After singing a number of songs, the lady who seemed
like a teacher said they also brought us a gift and this
boy came up the steps to hand me a pot of beautiful
poinsettia. She also asked if they can say a prayer for
our family and I gratefully said “yes” while trying to
hold back the tears welling up in my eyes. I was very
deeply touched by this selfless act of giving shown by
these kids who perhaps unwittingly answered the Pope’s
call for mercy. So I sent them off with a blessing that
they may continue to bring God’s love wherever they
go and to their parents and their school I whispered,
“Well done, people of God.”
— from w w w . f o ry o u r m a r r i a g e . o r g
Nazareth is a kind of school where we may begin to discover
what Christ’s life was like and even to understand his Gospel.
… First, we learn from its silence. … Second, we learn about
family life. … Finally, in Nazareth, the home of a craftsman’s
son, we learn about work and the discipline it entails.
Pope Paul VI
(from an address in Nazareth, Jan. 5, 1964)
Pope’s Intentions for January:
Universal Intention: That sincere dialogue among men and
women of different faiths may produce the fruits of peace
and justice.
Intention for Evangelization: That by means of dialogue
and fraternal charity, and with the grace of the Holy Spirit,
Christians may overcome divisions.

The first thing that a person finds in life and the last to which
he holds out his hand, and the most precious that he possess,
even if he does not realize it, is family life.

The Christmas season continues with today’s feast of the
Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. On Fri., Jan. 1, we
celebrate the solemnity of the Blessed Virgin Mary, Mother
of God. Sun., Jan. 3, finds us celebrating the Epiphany of
the Lord. The Christmas season closes with the feast of the
Baptism of the Lord on Jan. 10. Truly, Christmas is more than
a single day of celebration.
