Legacy Week 2014
This year 14 Year 9 KHS students assisted the local Legacy
Association with raising money for Legacy Week. Legacy is a
charity providing services to Australian families suffering
financially and socially after the incapacitation or death of a
spouse or parent, during or after their defence force service.
The students and Legatees covered the Tweed Coast from
Fingal to Pottsville fundraising over $200 at each of the 7
collection sites.
We would like to thank Alan Osborne and his Legatees for
including our students Jian Peters, Drew Paul, Noah Gwynne,
Bianca Hardy, Jordin Norman, Sofi Sutton, Remali Heffernan,
Shyann Gerrard, Isaac Van Zanten, Kyle Beaver, Tahlia
Keegan, Britney McQueen, Kye Wood and Ryan Van Gelder in
their Legacy Week fundraising event.

KHS seeks to provide quality second hand uniforms to
students who may require short term loans of clothing (for
example if they become unwearable at school or there is an
issue which prevents a student from coming to school in the
correct uniform). Should a student need to borrow an item of
uniform, they should see one of the Admin Head Teachers
promptly. It’s not OK to be out of uniform.

Girl’s Hockey
Year 12 Presentation will be held this Friday 19 September
at 9:30am in the school MPU. A light luncheon will be held
after the presentation for parents/carers and Year 12
students. I would like to wish Year 12 all the best for their
upcoming exams and for their future pursuits.
On Tuesday 26 August the Open Girls Hockey team travelled
to Sydney to play Crookwell High. The girls had an early start
leaving from Gold Coast Airport at 6:00 am. When we
arrived in Sydney we were met with wet and miserable
conditions which continued for the rest of the day. The game
was played at the St George/Randwick Hockey field and the
turf was very soggy and slow.
Year 12 students need to ensure that all their
administration responsibilities are completed prior to the
Formal.
Kingscliff High School featured strongly in the Kids in
Community Awards evening on 9 September at Twin Towns
Service Club.
Jesse Aviu from Year 12 sang the National Anthem,
performed and was also nominated for an award. Year 8
students Zhi Shilling and Dylan Brown performed an
indigenous dance with a didgeridoo. Dylan was also
nominated for an award in the ‘Caring for Others’ category.
Year 10 student Ryan Wayne was nominated in the ‘Leading
their Peers’ category along with the Kokerek Dance Group in
the ‘Celebrating Our Cultural Diversity’ category. Year 12
student Eliza Klatt performed for the audience by singing
and playing the guitar.
Many thanks to Mrs Jacinta O’Keeffe and Mr Angus Holliday
who volunteered to help on the night.
Year 9 and 10 students participated in the ‘Mock Interviews’
on 11 September. Students were interviewed by a panel
and the day provided excellent practice for students
applying to the workforce. Many thanks to Mrs Beth Matsuto
who organised this very successful day.
Mr Dean Hillard and his Year 10 KHS helpers are impressing
the local primary schools with their Soccer coaching. The
students and staff have reported that our students were
excellent members for the primary students.
Holidays start 22 September for two weeks. All students
return on Tuesday 7 October.

Crookwell High came into the match with a very tough
reputation and they lived up to this image. Both schools
slogged it out for an hour and the score was 1-1 at the end.
This forced us to go into extra time and still the score was
drawn after an extra 20 minutes. We then went into
dropping off players until there were only 7 a side left on the
field. It was within the dying minutes of the game that
Brooke Hawkey managed to convert a goal, giving the win to
Kingscliff High. A special mention must be given to exstudent Amelia Smith who gave up her time to help umpire
the match.
Kingscliff High has now made the final 8 teams of the State.
We will travel to Lithgow on the 10 and 11 September to
contest the state finals. As you can imagine, this involves a
lot of extra costs. We appreciate the donations made by IGA
Pottsville, Kingscliff High P&C and Lokotrack Services Pty
Ltd who have made it possible for the girls to travel to
Lithgow.
At Lithgow the girls went on to finish 7th in the State. We lost
4-2 to Orange (who made the finals) and Taree 4-3 (in dropoffs). Our last game we won against Grafton High 3-2. All
games were hard fought and we were unfortunate to lose
them.
The Open Girls Hockey team conducted themselves on and
off the field in a manner that was a credit to themselves and
enhanced the reputation of Kingscliff High School.

Aboriginal Education
Personalised Learning Plans
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students currently
require a Personalised Learning Plan (PLP). Parents and
carers will need to make an appointment with the front
office. Interviews will run for the duration of Term 3 and
Term 4.
Mr Appo will be coordinating the PLP interviews with the
appropriate staff to provide a tailored educational plan for
your child.

Accident Insurance for students
From time to time there are media stories about whether
children are insured for injuries they sustain during schoolrelated activities, both at school and at events outside of
school, such as excursions, sporting or other events.
The NSW Department of Education and Communities
however does not provide, nor has it ever provided, accident
or medical insurance for students enrolled in government
schools.
Private health insurance
Parents have the option of taking out private health
coverage for their children. This is usually limited to the
reimbursement of medical expenses and will not generally
provide the breadth of cover provided by a specific student
accident insurance policy. There are many insurance
companies that provide a good student accident policy.

School Fees
A reminder that school fees will need to be finalised by 19
September. When students initially chose electives they
committed to paying that fee. If you are having difficulty
paying the full amount, please make an appointment with
the Principal to discuss.
Our Services
The GUMURRII Student Support Unit provides cultural,
academic and personal support to Aboriginal and Torres
Strait Islander students enrolled at Griffith University on all
five campuses.

Senior Success Program - Survey
The Senior Success Program has been running at Kingscliff
High School for 2 years. The program is designed to support
students and their family through the dynamic process of
Stage 6 studies. There are many challenges that face the
student and their families during this time. Senior Success
is a workshop-oriented program that can provide both the
student and their support person with information and
strategies that include positive communication skills,
conflict resolution, effective studying skills and
understanding of what the Board of Studies, the school and
tertiary institutions expect of students.
The school highly values this program which has been
greatly supported by the KHS P&C. The Senior Success
Team would like to thank them for their continued support.
To review the effectiveness of the program a survey has
been developed for Year 11 and 12 students and their
parents/carers.

Zak steps up into the fitness industry through
TAFE
Zak taking group training session at the Fitness Factory
Zak Payne, a Year 12 student at Kingscliff High School, is
getting a head start on his dream career in the Fitness
Industry by doing a TAFE delivered vocational education
training (TVET) course at Kingscliff TAFE.
Zak says he could always see himself working in the fitness
industry, so with some foresight and planning whilst in his
final years at high school, Zak will not only graduate at the
end of 2014, he will also be a qualified personal trainer and
group fitness instructor with qualifications obtained through
TAFE.
“It was pretty evident that I would pursue a career in fitness
in some form or another, so when I became aware that I
could gain industry qualifications whilst still at school, I was
determined to make the most of it,” says Zak.

A TVET course allowed Zak the flexibility to study a
Certificate III & IV in Fitness and a Certificate I in Sports
Trainer in Years 11 and 12 as part of his HSC.
“This pathway has provided me with a definite advantage
over other school leavers planning on a career within the
fitness industry, as I am already qualified and ready for
work,” says Zak.
Through his TAFE teacher’s industry contacts, Zak has
already secured himself a position as group fitness
instructor ‘The Fitness Factory’ a local gym.
“Next year I intend to continue my studies at TAFE to
complete a Diploma in Fitness and a Certificate IV in
Remedial Massage, so it is great to have a job in the
industry which will help support me,” says Zak.

Ultimately Zak sees himself moving onto a degree in Sports
Science and specialising in the public health sector.
“I plan to go a long way within the fitness industry and feel
working with disabled or mature aged clientele would be
really rewarding,” says Zak.

Young People and Risk Taking
Risk-taking in adolescence it is an essential part of learning and personal development. Every healthy adolescent takes risks
as he or she grows towards independence. Most researchers agree that if there is no risk there is no growth. A common
problem for some young people is their inability to evaluate the potential risks and consequences of everyday behaviour.
Thrill seeking, speeding, the desire to impress one’s friends; feelings of invincibility and the search for new experiences are all
motivating forces that drive many teenagers. As a result they are over represented in every category of risk taking resulting in
injury and trauma.
The RRISK Program aims to reduce risk-taking behaviour associated with alcohol and drug use, driving and partying amongst
year 11 students in the North and Mid North Coast of NSW. RRISK is relevant to the social life, developmental stage
and concerns of adolescents. It extends the school based drug education and road safety curriculum by providing
opportunities for senior high school students to develop knowledge, attitudes and skills to reduce risk taking and develop
safer celebrating strategies.
Over 4200 students from more than 53 high schools from Port Macquarie to Tweed Heads have registered to attend one of 9
RRISK Seminars. If you have a year 11 student in your family, encourage them to attend.

Research shows that RRISK is effective in reducing young driver crashes by 44%
The largest study ever undertaken into young driver behaviour was conducted by the George Institute of International Health
and published in 2009. RRISK was identified as the only program to have resulted in a 44% reduction in road crashes for
participants. The researchers consider RRISK a best practice program because it builds resilience by equipping young
people with strategies and practical skills to manage risks in their social life and on the roads as drivers and passengers.
