Letter to Our Community
As the primary healthcare provider for Lebanon County, the Good Samaritan Health System strives to
deliver the best clinical care possible. We continuously make the investments necessary to develop new
options for healing while maintaining the highest quality. We are fortunate to have 1,500 dedicated
employees who take the time to treat every patient as a person – a neighbor deserving of our respect and
compassionate care.
Given economic conditions during this past year, our health system faced significant challenges. Along
with other hospitals throughout the region, state and nation, revenues decreased as many people delayed
seeking care during this recession. We have made appropriate adjustments to ensure that our 120-year-old
hospital will continue to provide patient care for the generations yet to come.
We do have wonderful news to report. As a member of the Lebanon community, you now have access to
new and powerful medical treatments. In the following pages, you will learn more about:
• Wound care and how those with chronic wounds can be healed
• New physicians and how we are delivering new treatment options
• Therapeutic hypothermia and how this dramatic procedure protects cardiac patients from brain damage
In all we do, we promise to continue to deliver the powerful medicine and comforting care that you and
your family deserve.

Good Samaritan Center for
Wound Care & Hyperbaric Medicine
Powerful Medicine for Patients with Chronic or Non-healing Wounds
In 2009 Good Samaritan opened the first wound care
center in Lebanon County to meet the undermet
needs of our community. Chronic or non-healing
wounds can result from many types of health conditions
such as a lack of mobility, diabetes, poor circulation,
trauma and vascular disease.
“I was looking at the possibility of losing my foot, even
part of my leg,” said Scot. “My other doctors were
running out of options. My wife read an article about
the wound care center and recommended that I ask
my doctor if it was worth a try. I was lucky, it opened
a few weeks later and I was one of the first patients.”
The specially trained staff at the wound care center is
headed by Dr. Benson Harvey who has been on the
surgical staff at The Good Samaritan Hospital for over
20 years. Through his experience as a vascular surgeon,
Dr. Harvey has gained the skill needed to treat patients
with chronic and non-healing wounds. In addition
to Dr. Harvey, the team at the wound care center includes
registered nurses who have had specialized training in
wound care and hyperbaric therapy technicians.
After four months and over 60 hyperbaric treatments,
Scot’s wound finally healed. He said, “It was amazing.
After each treatment you could see an improvement
in a couple of days.” He added, “The experience was
life-changing and I am grateful for the care I received
from the staff. Not just the medicine, but the way
they treated me as a person. I felt like they genuinely
cared. I would definitely recommend that people with
a wound that won’t heal go to Good Samaritan; it
changed my life.”
For patients like Scot Adams, the wound care center
offered hope when it seemed as if there was none left.
According to Dr. Harvey, “Scot came to us with a
very deep infection in his ankle caused by MRSA
(Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus), potentially a
very virulent and difficult to treat bacteria, especially
in the bone. It was a persistent infection that had not
been eradicated by previous treatments including
surgery and intravenous antibiotics.”
If you or a loved one suffers from a chronic or
non-healing wound, please visit our website

Guardian Angel
Like any mother, when Lauren Hallman gave birth to her son CJ her life would
never be the same. What Lauren didn’t know was just how much her life was
about to change.
A month after giving birth Lauren visited her doctor for a check-up. During her
exam it was discovered that she had a lump in her breast. She quickly followed
up with a mammogram and surgical consultation with her surgeon, Dr. Pilkington,
who performed a biopsy. At only 26 years old Lauren was diagnosed with
breast cancer.
She immediately began chemotherapy treatment at The Good Samaritan Hospital
under the care of Dr. Ruben Perez. Her treatment regime consisted of six
chemotherapy infusions over an 18-week period. “My whole world was turned
upside down,” said Lauren. “Not only did I have to learn how to be a mother,
but also how to be a cancer survivor. I knew in my heart that Good Samaritan
was the right place for me to receive my treatments.” She adds, “It’s funny how
people thought I should get a second opinion, but I just knew that Good
Samaritan would do the same as any other large cancer unit. The staff was very
nice and compassionate about my needs, they took extremely good care of me.
I am very happy with my decision.”
Today Lauren is finished with her treatment and on the road to recovery and
enjoying life with her new family. “Just to know I am on the road to being
healthy again, everyday I enjoy being a wife and a mother. Life is good and
because of my son, I had the chance to find my breast cancer in its early stage.
He is my angel.”

Good Samaritan Expands Physician Network
Specialized Healthcare for Our Community
In 2009, Good Samaritan added 10 new physicians
and providers. The addition of these physicians
represents the continued commitment of Good
Samaritan to recognize the healthcare needs of
the community.
“Our county has been blessed with talented physicians
and surgeons,” says Dr. Robert Shaver, vice president,
medical affairs. “As the county population has grown,
it became apparent that we needed more specialized
healthcare providers and family practitioners to fill
all the needs of our community.”
This initiative began in 2008 when it became obvious
that the county’s population was quickly outweighing
the number of physicians to care for it. In response,
the health system began to add to its physician group
which already included the family practice centers
located in Lebanon and Myerstown and Good
Samaritan Pediatrics. Good Samaritan added
gastroenterology, general surgery, and oncology
and hematology practices to its family of healthcare
providers. In 2009, these practices continued to grow
with the addition of new physicians and a new practice,
Good Samaritan Cardiovascular Surgical Associates.

Good Samaritan Invests in
Technology for the Future
System Provides New Physician Tools
and Electronic Medical Records
In February 2007, with patient safety and operating efficiencies at the
forefront, Good Samaritan partnered with McKesson to transition to
an integrated information system. Implementation of the Paragon system,
designed for use by community hospitals, began in 2007 and was
completed in July of 2009. During this two year period, over 100
employees were members of 20 teams that helped to build and test
multiple applications within the Paragon system. Each team was
represented by a team leader who was responsible for coordinating
completion of all tasks specific to their application.
Quite fittingly, the logo used to represent the Paragon project was a
mountain. To the many team members it felt like climbing a mountain,
a feat that was difficult to finish. All the hard work and endurance
paid off with the recent successful launch of the Paragon system.
Theresa M. Bordlemay
Paragon Project Director
“The Paragon project involved the entire
health system in one shape or form. For the
team members involved, the Paragon project
was an enormous undertaking spanning two
years. The dedication and professionalism
demonstrated by the Paragon team was evident
in the successful implementation of this new
system. As with most implementations of
this magnitude, there were bumps in the
road, but the commitment of the team to
continue moving forward, under sometimes
difficult circumstances, was the key driving
force of the project. I am genuinely thankful
to each and every member of the team for
the part that they played in the successful
implementation of the Paragon system.”
Paragon replaced Good Samaritan’s core information systems and
consolidated support functions throughout the health system. The
new system supports patient registration and scheduling, physician
ordering, clinical assessments and care plans, business office and
management of the operating and emergency departments. A
tremendous benefit to the patient is the electronic capture of care
rendered during their hospital visit and the ease of provider access to
their electronic records should a subsequent visit occur.
Staff training began in March of 2009 and concluded in July. Clinicians
were required to complete 12-16 hours of classroom education. The
classroom sessions provided an introduction and overview of the new
application as well as competency assessment. Through the hard work
of all those involved, the education plan was implemented. It was
total team effort and a testament to the employees that were involved.
The Paragon system uses state-of-the-art technology for information
storage, as well as access to information used by staff and physicians in
the community. As part of the implementation process, new computing
technology was installed which allows for scanning of information
directly into an electronic medical record and provides real time access
of patient records from anywhere in the health system and by physicians
using the internet. Medical records for over 280,000 patients were
converted, accounting for over 4,300,000 visits to our health system.
Patients, employees, caregivers and the community at large will reap
the benefits of an integrated information system for years to come.

New Lifesaving Treatment Makes a Difference
A Survivor’s Story
When Dale Long suffered a sudden cardiac arrest
while working at Lebanon Seaboard, his co-workers
called 911 and started CPR immediately. Once
EMTs were on the scene, they were able to restore
a life sustaining heart rhythm and transport him
to The Good Samaritan Hospital.
Still unconscious when he arrived at the ER,
doctors found that Dale had sustained an injury
to his head when he collapsed. Fearing his fall
may have caused brain damage, his medical team
decided to implement a protocol known as
therapeutic hypothermia, a life-saving protocol
offered by only a few hospitals in the area.
Therapeutic hypothermia lowers the patient’s
body temperature and reduces the brain’s demand
for oxygen and nutrients resulting in a lower risk
of neurological impairment.
Once Dale awoke and showed no signs of
neurological impairment, the team started to work
on his heart to repair the ventricular fibrillation
which caused the sudden attack. Dale received a
cardiac catheterization where it was determined
that he suffered from four severe blockages and
required quadruple bypass surgery.
11
2009 Community Report
Although Dale’s bypass surgery was a
success, his heart muscle was weakened
leaving him susceptible to heart rhythm
issues, known as arrhythmia, which could
cause future attacks. Dale was fitted with
a temporary external defibrillator called a
Life Vest. The Life Vest would painlessly
shock his heart back into a healthy
rhythm if it suddenly went into a life
threatening arrhythmia. After it was
determined he was a candidate for a
more permanent defibrillator, he received
a device that will maintain his heart
rhythm for several years and requires only
an outpatient visit to replace it.
Following surgery Dale was admitted to
the outpatient cardiac rehabilitation
program in order to slowly rebuild his
stamina and decrease his risk for future
heart related illness. After completing
the program in 18 weeks, Dale was able
to return to work within a few months of
suffering a major cardiac event.
Dale is alive today thanks to the quick
actions of his co-workers and the advanced
cardiac care he received at Good Samaritan.
According to Dale, “I don’t remember
much initially,” he says. “But I do remember
how my dietitian left me friendly notes
every day and how my doctors are always
patient with my questions and concerns.
Personal care and attention are a huge
part of the healing process at Good
Samaritan. I attribute that to how quickly
I recovered.”
Dale Long with his wife Susan and son Jeffrey
Comforting Cardiac Care
“We live in Strasburg. So when I learned that Dale was rushed
to Good Samaritan, my first thought was: Why did this have to
happen so far from home? It didn’t take me long to realize why.
Everyone at Good Samaritan is genuinely concerned about
patients and their families. As a nurse, I know how easy it is to
forget that patients are people with families. But the nurses and
doctors at Good Samaritan not only cared for Dale, they treated
my family like one of their own.
I remember a lady from the kitchen stopped by the waiting room.
‘You look like you need a hug,’ she said. It was the most comforting
thing I’d ever experienced. Dale was critical. We still didn’t know if
he was going to live. So that hug meant the world to me.
Dale could have gotten medical care at another hospital, but he
wouldn’t have gotten the kind of personal care that just made
everything okay.”

Team Nursing
A New Approach to Home Health Care
dieticians, and home health aides. Patients are assigned a designated
team that cares for them for the length of their care plan. “It
really changes the way that we care for patients,” said Morrison.
“Before a patient could have a different nurse or therapist every
time. Most care givers do things a little differently and that can
become confusing for the patient. This model allows for them to
get to know their provider and their routine. It really does make
for better clinical outcomes and increased patient satisfaction.”
Constance Morrison
Executive Director, Home Health Services
For patients with health concerns that limit
their mobility, home health services can be a
blessing. It allows patients recovering from a recent
hospitalization or those confined to their homes
the ability to receive much needed medical care
by a visiting nurse team that comes to where
they are. Patients who are faced with a terminal
condition can rely on hospice, our home health
service which helps them live life as fully as
possible, offers dignity when there is no cure,
and surrounds their families with love at one of
life’s most challenging times.
Since its inception at Good Samaritan nearly
100 years ago, home health services has seen
many changes. In 2009, Constance Morrison
joined the home health services team as executive
director. With over 28 years experience in home
health care, Morrison has applied her knowledge
in making some exciting changes to improve
home health services.
One change that has greatly improved patient
care is a concept called team nursing. Each visiting
nurse team consists of registered and licensed
practical nurses, physical and occupational therapists,
13
2009 Community Report
In 2009, GSH Hospice celebrated 30 years of offering
compassionate hospice care to the community. Over 90% of
people in the final stages of a terminal disease choose to stay at
home in the familiar surroundings of family, friends, pets and
their routine. GSH Hospice makes this possible through a similar
model of team nursing. In addition to the health professionals
in the teams deployed by the visiting nurse agency, the hospice
teams include primary care physicians, social workers, pharmacists,
therapists, trained volunteers and chaplains. Together, the team
cares for the physical and emotional needs of patients, their families
and close friends.
Adds Morrison, “When most people think of hospice they think
of a nurse providing medical care and medication to patients
with a terminal disease. Hospice is really about treating the
whole family and making a difficult time a little more comfortable.”
In addition to offering compassionate medical care, hospice
offers help to families after the loss of a loved one. GSH Hospice
offers family support for a full year after the loss. This includes
bereavement classes geared to specific age appropriate needs of
family members. The classes include adolescent classes, adult
classes and a course for younger children. In addition to support
groups, an annual hospice memorial service is held to allow
families a chance to honor their loved ones who have passed.
“We really see our treatment plan as a whole family approach.
This provides patients with the reassurance that their loved ones
will have the support they are sure to need.”

services, please call (717) 274-2591 or visit www.gshleb.org for

In 2009, two members of the Good Samaritan senior
management team retired. With both having spent over 20
years with the health system, we thought it fitting to recognize
them for their years of service and outstanding contributions.
Bill Carpenter & Linda Starry Retire
Bill Carpenter began his career at Good Samaritan in 1985.
Most recently he held the position of vice president,
development. During his 25-year tenure he also held the
position of vice president, community services and
development, and director of planning and marketing.
In the 25 years Bill was with the health system, The Good
Samaritan Health Services Foundation has received gifts
totaling over $24 million, most of which was raised under his
direction and tenure as chief development officer.
In 2004 Good Samaritan launched the capital campaign to
support construction of the south wing. This included the
new emergency department, operating areas, intensive-care
unit and our cardiovascular center which is ranked as one of
the nation’s best for patient care. Under Bill’s leadership, the
foundation raised more than $11 million for the campaign.
Bill Carpenter
Linda Starry was a member of the Good Samaritan family for over
36 years. Her most recent position was director of hospitality
services where she was responsible for managing the food services,
housekeeping and laundry departments. She began her career
as a medical secretary in the laboratory in 1973. In 1979 she
transferred to the human resource department where she became
director in 1988 and vice president in 1995.
Under Linda’s direction, the Good Samaritan hospitality services
became a first class operation. During her tenure she led the
construction of the new Courtyard Café and implementation
of made-to-order patient meals, which has greatly helped to
improve patient satisfaction.
Both Bill and Linda will surely be missed by everyone at Good
Samaritan. We wish them both happy and healthy retirements.

Letter to Our Contributors
This annual report provides us with a great opportunity each year to thank and recognize our many
donors for their support. As you glance through these pages, you will see the names of countless
individuals who continue to make a difference in our community through their support of The Good
Samaritan Hospital.
We are fortunate to live and work in a community surrounded by so many generous people and
nobody knows that better than I. It has been my honor to oversee the Good Samaritan development
office for the past 20 years. In that capacity, I have had the privilege of meeting many incredible people.
It has been my pleasure to work with our donors and their families.
When I announced my retirement, it occurred to me that this letter would be my last opportunity to
say thanks in this form. But, please be assured that I will be forever grateful to those who have chosen
to invest in our hospital and our mission.
We have been able to accomplish a great deal through your support and I am hopeful that we will
continue to grow and prosper in our community hospital and throughout Lebanon County.
