Annual Holiday Train stop collects 4,861 pounds of food
JASON LOPER
OUTLOOK EDITOR
When the Canadian Pacific
Holiday Train pulled into Marquette
for its annual visit on Tuesday,
December 8, a rather sizable crowed
was waiting to greet it. With a
temperature in the upper 40’s and
nary a snowflake in sight, it was
a perfect evening to get into the
holiday spirit, and that certainly
showed in the number of people
who gathered on Water Street for
the event.
The crowd started gathering
early this year. With the train
scheduled to arrive at 5:00 p.m.,
the Water Street levy was already
filling up with onlookers by 4:00.
Those who gathered under the pink
sunset were entertained by carolers
and kept warm with hot chocolate
sold by MFL MarMac’s Dollars for
Scholars. The Holiday Train arrived as
scheduled, approaching from the
west and crossing 1st Street at
5:00 p.m. The brightly lit train first
positioned itself just north of the US
18 bridge and then “backed” into
position to rest with the engine near
the 1st Street curve on the north end
and the caboose parallel with Water
Street’s dead-end on the south.
When the stage car opened Kira
Isabella and Doc Walker
entertained the crowd with a
raucous holiday performance. As
the crowd gathered around the stage
attendees had the opportunity to
shoot selfies and portraits in front of
the 14 glowing train cars. This is one of only three stops
that the Holiday Train makes in
Iowa. The train had been in Mason
City on December 7 and then in
Charles City the morning before
it made its way to Marquette.
After departing from Marquette,
the train made its way to La
Crescent, Minnesota to continue its
fundraising trip across the northern
United States.
The Holiday Train’s stop in
Marquette netted 4,861 pounds of
non-perishable foods and $7,576.00
in monetary donations. All
donations collected at the Marquette
stop benefit the Clayton County
Food Shelf.

It looks like Trilogy Partners
will have to go back to the drawing
board with their plans for the parcel
of land where Holiday Shores
Motel once stood in McGregor. The
Planning and Zoning Board did not
approve Trilogy Partner’s request
for the zoning change that would
allow the group to build a planned
condominium development on the
site.
The Planning and Zoning
board re-adjourned on Wednesday,
December 9, 2015, following a
week of deliberations after an initial
zoning meeting. Mike Jensen, an
engineer from IIW in Dubuque,
represented Trilogy Partners at the
meeting. Two of Trilogy Partners’
entities, Bruce and Lois Buchheit,
were also in attendance.
Jensen presented updated site
plans and answered questions
that were left unanswered at the
end of the November 30 meeting.
Jensen’s presentation included a
conceptual site plan that gave an
overview of the building’s design
and addressed questions about
potential flooding issues. This
conceptual plan indicated a 3-story,
18-unit condominium development
that would include a parking lot
with a minimum of 27 spaces.
Lois Buchheit reiterated that this
was merely a conceptual plan and
that Trilogy Partners has not yet
engaged in a design process that
would decide the ultimate size of

the building and condo units.
The lack of a commercial
element to the development was
the ultimate sticking point for
the zoning board. Zoning board
member Donna Staples stated, “I
have mixed feelings. I’m not saying
condos are right and I’m not saying
condos are wrong. But I’m also
thinking about the future of this
town and the community and we do
need something that creates revenue
to keep our chamber going for our
community. But I wish there could
be a plan in play to accommodate
both things.”
Board member Neil Dodgen also
questioned whether changing the
zoning of this property would open
up the area for further residential
development, “The question before
us is will we allow a zoning change?
My initial thought is I’d like to
keep the zoning the same. We set it
up that way for a reason,” Dodgen
said. “If we go ahead and change
the zoning that will open it up –
because projects do fail – that will
open up this whole area to other
things that could be put up without
any permission.”
Another board member, Sallee
Meuhlbauer, agreed that a mix
of residential and commercial
would better suit the needs of the
community. “I’m with Donna. If
you would be open to trying to do
two things and make it a win for
you and make it a win for the city,”
Meulbauer stated. She went on to
say, “I’m not saying I’m against
things that you want to do. I just
hope that we can come together
and that you’re open to other
suggestions that just the condos.”
The zoning board all agreed
that while the condo development
would be a nice addition to
the community, they could not
recommend the zoning change. As
board chairperson Larry Brummel
said, “The property that you own is
the diamond here in town. We want
to make sure that it’s developed for
the best use for both you and the
city.”
The zoning board took a brief
recess to come to final agreement
on their decision on zoning change.
Upon returning from recess Sallee
Muehlbauer read the following
motion: “I make a motion to deny
applicant’s request for a zoning
change. The board recommends
that the city council work with
the developers/owners to design
a mixed-use property to include
condominium ownership and
short-term lodging. Furthermore,
the board recommends that the
city council make a motion to add
planned unit developments as a
special exception in the W1 zoning
district.” The motion was seconded
by Neil Dodgen and approved by
the rest of the zoning board.
*Correction: In last week’s
article about the zoning board
meeting, we incorrectly stated
that Josie Davis asked how many
in the crowd were in favor of the
condo development. That question
should have been credited to Cathy
Corpian. We regret the error.
There’s one less empty storefront
in downtown Monona thanks to Ben
Schultz and his eponymous sign
business.
Shultz started renting the space
at 104 West Center Street in August
and spent the following few months
outfitting the former beauty salon
to fit his needs. Schultz pulled
up carpet, repainted some of the
walls and covered other walls
in tin sheets. “It’s cheaper to do
that than to paint,” Schultz said.
“I’m just going to start tinning
everything.” The tins walls give
the space a modern industrial look
and allows the light from the big
picture windows to bounce around
the space, giving it a brightness that
couldn’t be achieved with paint.
The move from Schultz’s home,
where his business had been based
for the past five years, and into
the storefront location was one of
necessity. As Schultz’s business
grew and he amassed more
equipment, he came to realize he
needed a new space for operations.
“You pretty much had to look over
the printer to see the TV in the
house,” Schultz said. The business
“took up the whole house. The vinyl
inventory took up one whole room.
We kind of just needed a shop.”
For now, the storefront is more of
a studio than a retail space. Schultz
does hope to keep retail hours in the
future but at this point he’s open by
appointment only. “My dad’s been
here a lot,” Schultz said, “because
I’m trying to get a bean bag board
inventory built up. And then he’s
built frames for our prints. He’s
usually here in the daytime. And
then I usually get here everyday by
2 or 3.”
Schultz is also busy dividing
his time between his full-time
job at Swiss Valley, where he
works nights, and his roster of
existing clients. Schultz creates
vinyl lettering, business signage,
automotive lettering, t-shirts, canvas
prints and more. Some of his wall
decal work can be seen at Creative
Enz Salon and Spa in McGregor.
Due to workload, Schultz says
to expect a grand opening some
time after the new year. Until then,
Schultz Sign Co. is available by
appointment.

Soil & Water Conservation awards local farm families during annual awards banquet
The Clayton Soil & Water
Conservation District (SWCD)
honored the outstanding
conservation efforts of local farm
families during the annual awards
banquet held December 3, 2015
at FreedomBank in Elkader. This
year’s award winners showcase
a variety of conservation efforts,
and each recipient provides an
outstanding example of what we can
do to protect the natural resources
that we enjoy in northeast Iowa.
The local awards program is cosponsored by the Clayton County
Farm Bureau.
Travis Landt received the 2015
Owner-Operator Award for the
Clayton SWCD. His home farm
includes 175 acres in Wagner and
Monona townships in northwest
Clayton County. Over the last seven
years, Travis has implemented
a combination of structural and
management practices that reduce
soil erosion and nutrient loss from
his farm.
Travis is the third generation of
his family to own and operate their
farm. The enterprise also includes
several other tracts, most of which
are farmed with a corn/soybean
rotation. Travis first experimented
with a no-till planting system in
1995, and has since expanded it
to the majority of his crop acres.
Fertilizer useage is based on
improved technology. Application
rates are varied across fields based
on an intensive soil sampling
program.
Travis and his father Wayne
constructed terraces for the first
time in 2000. Their first terrace
project was completed without
cost share. Since 2007, the Landts
have constructed nearly two and
one half miles of new terraces
through the Silver Creek Watershed
Project. The terraces target steep
cropland slopes and form an
effective system of conservation
practices when combined with notill planting. As Travis has added
land to his farming operation, he
has continually looked for ways
to improve and protect his soil
resource.
Elmer & Theresa Bries, and
Jared Lenth were selected for
recognition in the Landlord/
Tenant Division for 2015. This
division highlights the cooperation
necessary to achieve the common
goal of conserving our natural
resources. The Bries farm includes
141 acres of cropland in Wagner
Township west of Farmersburg.
Jared and his father Jimmie have
leased the farm for several years.
The Bries farm reflects a long
standing conservation ethic. Elmer
constructed terraces on some of the
steeper slopes beginning in 1995.
By 2001, he had completed nearly
two miles of terraces. In 2012, the
Bries’ entered fourteen acres of
critical slopes on the farm into the
Conservation Reserve Program
(CRP). The CRP acres were seeded
to a mix of native grasses and
wildflowers, which protect shallow
soils and provide excellent cover for
wildlife.
Jared grows corn and soybeans
on the cropland acres. He maintains
the contour lines, waterways, and
terraces established by the Bries’,
and utilizes a reduced tillage
planting system. Corn and soybeans
are planted with a no-till systems
most years, however, some tillage
is performed for continuous corn
acres. The terraces, waterways, and
contours installed by the Bries’,
combined with the reduced tillage
system utilized by Jared have
created a very effective system of
conservation practices.
On September 24th, fortysix students from two local high
schools gathered at the Motor Mill
Historical site near Elkader for the
40th annual Clayton SWCD soil
judging contest. Participants judged
soil profiles, tested their pacing
ability, and flagged contour lines.
Individual and team winners were
recognized at this year’s awards
banquet.

Area Police Department warn
local citizens of “419 Scam”
The Elkader Police Department
would like to remind everyone to
use extreme caution when meeting
people on the internet. Reports have
been filed with us and neighboring
police departments of citizens being
defrauded money over the internet
and through phone solicitations.
The latest scam is called the 419
Scam. The scammer will use a
dating site to make contact with
someone and will then attempt
to make the unsuspecting person
think they have fallen in love with
them. The criminal will then do
one of two things. They will make
up a horrific story and request the
person send them money. Once the
funds have been sent the criminal
will stop talking to the victim. The
second 419 Scam is the criminal
will ask to send a check to the
victim to cash. The victim will
be told to keep some of the funds
and send the rest to a friend of the
criminal. The check will be fake
and by the time it is returned to the
bank, the criminal will not be able
to be found and the victim will have
to repay the money.
The Elkader Police Department
would like to remind everyone to
watch the websites you and your
family members log onto. These
people often prey on the elderly
and the disabled. We ask people
to follow the following four rules.
If something sounds to good to be
true, it most likely is. Never respond
to an email or phone call requiring
you give your personal information.
Never participate in any “Sale of
Goods’, “Survey”, “Competition”,
or “lottery or inheritance” scheme
requiring you to send money or
personal information over the
phone. Lastly, if someone asks
you to buy something or accept a
check, first verify their information
through the bank or Better Business
Bureau. If you receive calls please
take the information and notify your
local law enforcement agency. Have
a safe and happy holiday season.

November 30, 2015
Meeting of the Clayton County Board of
Supervisors at their office, 600 Gunder
Road, Elkader, Iowa.
Present: Gary Bowden, Larry Gibbs, Ron
McCartney.
Guests: Sheila Kobliska, Jean Gage, Carol
Keune, Shirley Christianson, Sylvia Mork, Merry
French, Ellen Collins and Rafe Koopman.
The Supervisors met with several members
of the regional County Social Services to discuss upcoming changes to mental health services.
McCartney moved to approve the minutes
of the November 23, 2015, meeting. Gibbs seconded. Ayes: Bowden, Gibbs, McCartney.
County Engineer Rafe Koopman presented
the Supervisors with a resolution to change the

reasonable and proper under the conditions
existing, and may determine and declare a reasonable and proper speed limit, and
WHEREAS, such an investigation has been
requested and has been completed by the Clayton County Engineer.
NOW THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY
THE BOARD OF SUPERVISORS OF CLAYTON COUNTY that the speed limit be established and appropriate signs be erected at the
location described as follows:
On Pleasant Ridge Rd from the intersection
with Hwy 18 to the west corporate limits with

speed limit shall be 45mph.
Gibbs moved to approve the sub-contract
with Substance Abuse Services for Clayton
County, pursuant to a grant application that was
written, submitted and received earlier in the
year and authorize the Chair to sign said subcontract. McCartney seconded. Ayes: Bowden,
Gibbs, McCartney.

courthouse clock restoration and requested the

nominated by Christina
Harbaugh, the music teacher.
Harbaugh said, “Ryan
Moon has been making
large contributions to
the MFL MarMac music
Ryan Moon
department through his
positive attitude, strong work ethic, and dedicated
participation for as long as I have been working
here. On Saturday December 5th, Ryan’s efforts
were recognized in a very special way. Ryan was
accepted to the NEIBA Honor Band. This event
was held in Olewien and features about 500 of the
best middle school and high school musicians in
the North East Iowa District. This year participants
came from 56 different schools. The competition
for acceptance is extremely steep and Ryan
auditioned very well.”
Chrstina continued, “A big thanks to Ryan
Moon for all of his hard work and for representing
our school so well during rehearsals and
performances on December 5th. Your hard work
has paid off, and you have given the community
something to be very proud of!”

OPINION
Letter from the Editor
We are living history
JASON LOPER
OUTLOOK EDITOR
Since buying our house here
two years ago we’ve logged a lot
of miles in the car driving between
Monona and Chicago. One thing
that has made the hours bearable
has been radio shows and podcasts.
If we’re not listening to old time
radio shows like Jack Benny and
Suspense, then we’re listening to
National Public Radio programs.
One of my favorite radio projects
is called StoryCorps. StoryCorps’
mission is “to provide people of
all backgrounds and beliefs with
the opportunity to record, share
and preserve the stories of our
lives.” Since 2003, they’ve had
StoryBooths set up around the
country where they’ve allowed
everyday folks to walk in and
interview their friends and relatives.
And, more recently, StoryCorps
has launched an app that makes
recording history as easy as hitting
a record button on your smart
phone.
I’ve always loved the idea of this.
I don’t know about you but when
I think of history I tend to think
about what’s written in books. But
of course we’re all living history
every day. And it’s not always the
big, national events that matter.
Smaller, regional stories have
importance as well.

How You Can Avoid
7 Costly Mistakes if
Hurt at Work
Each year thousands of Iowans are hurt at
work, but many fail to learn the Injured

2. Money for Permanent Disability 3. 2nd Medical Opinion
in Admitted Claims. . . . A New Book reveals your other
rights, 5 Things to Know Before Signing Forms or Hiring an
Attorney and much more. The book is being offered to you
at no cost because since 1997, Iowa Work Injury Attorney

Community here in Monona last
week. I was there on a mission to
collect stories for an upcoming
holiday themed article. As I talked
to a group of folks ranging in age
from 75 to 104 it occurred to me
how much history was in the room.
While it may not be the history that
gets written in textbooks, the stories
are no less important or impactful.
With the holidays coming up
it’s a perfect time to start asking
questions of the more senior
members of our families. Questions
as simple as what it was like when
grandma was growing up can be
quite enlightening … especially
for the younger kids who haven’t
known a life without cell phones.
Try explaining a party line to them!
Whether you record family
stories for posterity or add them to
your own memory bank, learning
from each other’s history is a way to
stay connected to each other and to
our pasts.

MFL MarMac Stu Crew brings holiday spirit to many
The MFL MarMac Middle
School Stu Crew has had a busy
holiday season already and has
found many ways to bring the
holiday spirit to the McGregor
Center and give back to our
communities at the same time!
The first exciting addition to our
building was a TV Announcement
system in the Main Hallway. This
TV displays a slideshow with
updates, event & class information,
and pictures of our students. For
the past several years, the Stu Crew
has been fundraising for this item
and was finally able to purchase and
install it this fall. All of the staff
members are able to add their own
slides to the presentation, making it
a truly collaborative project!
In mid November, all students
in the building participated in
our annual Holiday Cash & Coin
Drive. Homerooms were each
given the goal of raising $50, and
those who met the goal were able
to play in a Dodgeball tournament
last week! Eleven of sixteen
homerooms met the goal, and as
a building we raised just shy of
$850. The funds were divided
across three different local causes:
Shepherd of the Hills Holiday Shop,
Angels Helping Angels, and the
Samson Boylen Scholarship Fund.
Representatives from the Stu Crew
spent an afternoon purchasing gift
items at Walmart including clothes
and shoes, winter gear, toys and
board games, movies and Xbox
games, mP3 players, headphones
and bluetooth speakers, iTunes
Gift Cards, make up and hair
accessories, jewelry, books, athletic
balls, and more! The gifts have
been delivered to two Angels in the
community and Shepherd of the
Hills in St. Olaf.
Prior to the Holiday Train event,
students in the McGregor Center
brought in non-perishable food
items to donate to the Clayton
County Food Shelf. For each item
donated, students were able to fill
out a raffle ticket and enter the
drawing for a new set of Dr. Dre
Beats, iTunes gift cards, and candy
canes! The Stu Crew purchased
and donated these items to the
raffle winners. Winner of the Beats
was 7th grader Logan Brown. The
iTunes gift cards went to 7th grader
Ben Miene, 6th grader Annie Heins,
and 5th grader Anabel Pagaza.
Representatives from the Stu
Crew delivered 2 suburban loads
of donations to the Holiday Train
site and stayed to enjoy the event as
well!
Each year the Stu Crew sponsors
a tree at the Festival of Trees in
McGregor, and this year we decided
to display our Bulldog Spirit tree at
the school and go with a new theme
at the festival. Our theme for the
year is “Why Fit in When You Were
Born to Stand Out,” so our tree was
adorned with flashing lights, bright
and colorful ornaments, and neon
colors galore! Last year, Stu Crew
member Hanna Dickman, won a
cash prize for her tree decorated
for Maggie’s Diner. She generously
donated her prize to the Stu Crew so
we could purchase new ornaments
this year. If you didn’t have time to
stop at the festival, the tree is now
on display near the main entrance of
the McGregor Center.
This group of 12 young people
has worked extremely hard at being
good leaders for the rest of the
students at the McGregor Center
and has had quite a successful year!
As their sponsor, I am very proud
of them!

Canadian Pacific prepares track for winter
A crew from Canadian Pacific railroad was working on the track
that runs through Monona on Monday, November 23. According to the
workers present, the crew was “shuffling machines around.” Canadian
Pacific was sending their regulator up north to have the snow equipment
installed. They were also changing out some rail before the ground
freezes. The crew was just passing through as they complete the work
on this stretch of track. The workers are based in states around the
region - Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri and Illinois.

It’s beginning to look a lot like Christmas in downtown Monona
On Tuesday, November 24, a crew from Alliant Energy brought their bucket truck to town to wrap the
evergreen rope and Christmas lights on the streetlights. Alliant provides this service free of charge to the city.
Holiday music began streaming through the speakers on Monday, November 30 and will continue through
the month of December.

Bolldog boys pick up wins against South Winneshiek Bulldog wrestlers have a great week on the mat as they win
and North Fayette Valley in action last week
the Nashua Plainfield tournament with four champions
South Winn
After a hard-fought first quarter,
where the score teetered back and
forth the Bulldogs led South Winn
22-20 after one, and were knotted
at 38 at the half, the Bulldog would
dig and claw for the win as the
final score was 73-62. Starters on
the court were Bryar Ruff, Mason
Hertramph, Tristen Kautman, Ty
Hefmer and Cade Kuenster.
Kautman was the top scorer
with 26 points and four made shots
from beyond the arc to lead the
offense. Also in double figures were
Hertrampf with 16, Kuenster with
15 and Hefner with 14 to round
out the balanced scoring attack.
Hertrampf added three treys and
Hefner had two. Hefner had seven
assists and Hertrampf and Kautman
had five each. Kautman also made
four of six shots from the charity
stripe.
Coach Eric Dettbarn said,
“Against South Winn we probably
played our best offensive game of
the year. It was nice to have four
kids in double figures and they
all did a good job of sharing the
basketball all game long.”
Kuenster led the team with
nine rebounds, Ruff had six and
Hertrampf added five. Kuenster
blocked two South Winn buckets
and Ruff had one as well.
About the defense, the Coach
said, “Defensively, we really got
hurt inside during the first half
but we were able to make some
adjustments at halftime which
helped us play a much better game
in the second half.”
After the game he added, “The
kids played with a lot of effort
which allowed us to come away
with our third victory in four
games.”
North Fayette Valley
In another up and down battle,
the Bulldogs took an early lead
against North Fayette Valley, 16-10
after one, but the Tiger Hawks
kept clawing back after the half,
however, with great team effort, the
Bulldogs would get the win by a
score of 57-54.
The Coach noted, “This game
was a dog fight from the get go.
Offensively, we were out of sink all
night. But, we were able to play just
well enough to come away with the
three-point victory.”
Kuenster was the leading scorer
as he had 21 points on the night
and Hertrampf and Kautman each
pumped in 15. Hefner added six to
round out the scoring. Hertrampf
had three shots from downtown,
Hefner added two and Kautman had
one long ball. Hertrampf and Hefner
had four assists each and Ruff and
Kautman added two apiece.
Defensively, Kautman had six
steals on the night. Hertrampf
grabbed three steals and Ruff and
Heffner added two take aways.
Snatching boards were Ruff and
Hertrampf with six each. Also
doing a good job on the boards
was Hefner with five. Ruff had two
blocked shots as did Kuenster.
About the defensive, Dettbarn
said, “On a night when you are
struggling at the offensive end, you
have to make plays on the defensive
end to make up for it. I thought, for
the most part, we did that.”
After the game, he added,
“It was a very exciting game
throughout that ended with us
making a last second three by
Hefner to get our fourth win.”
This week the Bulldogs travel
to Postville on Tuesday and have a
home game with Ed-Co on Friday.

South Winn
The Bullodg girls faced a strong
South Winn team last Tuesday, and
although they had a three point
lead after one quarter, and were
leading at the break, they would
end up losing a hard-fought battle
45-41. Coach Ashley Sickles said,
“The game started out well for the
Bulldogs. We had a nice lead at the
half. Unfortunately, the Warriors
came out in the second half red hot
and we were unable to answer. We
were out-scored in the second half
17-28.”
Hayley Vogt had 16 points to
lead the scoring attack, Chaun’te
Drahn and Kyleigh Picha added
seven each. Kayla Keehner aided
the offense with seven assists and
Vogt had two. Others with assists
were Jasmine Stocker, Picha and
Kennedy McShane who each had
one.
About the offense, the coach
noted, “Offensively, we struggled
making both inside and outside
shots throughout the game.”
Defensively, Drahn had seven
rebounds as did McShane. Vogt
had four, Keehner added three,
Aspen Havlicek, Kylie Moose,
Rebecca Harms and Picha grabbed
two boards each. Drahn had three
blocked shots and Harms and
McShane also each blocked a South
Winn shot.
Sickles explained, “Defensively,
we played the Warriors in a man
defense. The game plan was to put
pressure on the Warrior guards to
make them have to handle the ball.
Rebounding hurt us in this game as
we allowed too many second chance
shots.”
North Fayette Valley
Friday night the girls played
North Fayette Valley where they got
back on the winning track.
The coach noted, “Going into
the game our focus was to come
out with energy and set the game
tempo. We started the game playing
man to man, but after the Tiger
Hawks had several made shots
inside the paint, we switched to a
2-3 zone.”
With the score tied at the half,
the girls out-scored the Tiger Hawks
in both the third and fourth quarters

for the nine point, 43-34 win.
Starters were Vogt, Keehner, Drahn,
Harms and McShane.
Vogt was the only Bulldog
in double figures with 12 points,
Keehner had nine and Picha scored
seven off the bench. Drahn had five
points. Drahn and McShane had
four assists each while Vogt, Allsion
Corlett and Keehner each had two.
Explaining the offense, Coach
Sickles said, “We ran a zone
offense to work on moving the ball
around the court to breakdown
their defense. The Bulldogs did a
good job of attacking the zone and
finding open players on the court.
Keehner really stepped up knocking
down shots and bringing the ball
up the court. Josie Kleinow, who
played in her first varsity game,
gave us solid minutes in the second
half and was a key defensive player
as she was able to use her height to
help challenge shots.”
Defensively, Drahn had two
blocked shots and freshman Josie
Kleinow had one.
This week the girls were slated
to play Postville on Tuesday and
travel to Crestwood on Thursday.
They will host Ed-Co on the
Bulldog court Friday night.

on Tuesday. We wrestled very well
against our opponents that night
taking all three duals. I thought
our energy was good and technique
from the top to bottom was very
aggressive and I liked the way our
seven freshman wrestled in the line
up as well. “

The MFL MarMac Wrestlers won the tournament at Nashua- Plainfield
last Saturday as they crowned four individual champions. Earning first
place were Korby Keehner, Brady Olson, Kordell DuCharme and Brady
Miller.
Prairie du Chien dual
To keep the dual action going,
the Bulldogs hosted Prairie du
Chien in McGregor.
The coach said, “ It was nice to
wrestle a single dual in McGregor.
It is a good atmosphere there where
the fans are right on top of the
competition. We knew the dual
would be close as they have a nice
team so we had our hands full.
We just needed a few guys to step
up. Kordell DuCharme got things
started with a fall and Egan and
Corlett had two tough opponents but
we wrestled with some toughness
in those matches. Olson got things
started at 138 with a fall and Burke
and Johanningmeier added to that
with a pair of falls which kept the
momentum going. Fletcher wrestled
a tough match and got caught with
and over under throw at 182. We
wrestled hard for 6 minutes but
only gave up a decision which is
huge in this kind of dual as all the
points really matter. The match of
the night came down at 195 where
Brady Miller took the decision
for the win which really was the
turning point in the dual. Keehner at
heavyweight came out and did what
we needed him to do which was
get the fall. Trudo and Tanniehill at
the lower weights lost some tough
matches but the Bulldogs came out
with the victory 39-36.”
Winning for the Bulldogs were:
120 DuCharme won by fall
138 Olson won by fall
145 Burke won by fall
152 Johanningmeier won by fall
160 Lange won by forfeit
195 Miller won by decision
285 K. Keehner won by fall.

and gold from MFL MarMac won
the tourney.
The champions were 120
DuCharme; 132 Olson; 195 Miller;
285 K. Keehner
About the performance, Coach
Bachman said, “It was a great
day of wrestling. It was a first
championship for Olson who did
well all day. Lange, who was a
runner-up faced a tough kid from
Hudson. At 195 Garret Keehner did
a great job for a freshman. Miller
also won his first championship
of his career and we were very
proud of his efforts. Korby Keehner
faced an undefeated senior from
Northwood and won the match in
the third period for some key back
points and a reversal. That was a big
match and a good way to end the
day.”
Other place winners were:
106 Trudo, third; 113 Tenniehill,
