A
Foreword
The new Nankang Roadiac radial tire was tested and evaluated in
comparison with the:
Î Avon Storm AV 55 Storm ST 2 Ultra / AV 56 Storm ST 2 Ultra
(designated "Avon Storm" hereafter)
and the:
Î Bridgestone Battlax BT 023
(designated "BT 023" hereafter)
The test vehicle for the following tire dimensions:
Front:
Rear:
120/70ZR17
180/55ZR17
was a Suzuki GSF 1200 Bandit, model year 2001, which was organized
and provided by MTC.
The motorcycle was in an excellent technical condition.
In order to facilitate testing with a sporty riding style and at extreme
lean angles, the standard footrests were replaced with shorter sport
footrests.
The suspension elements were checked and adjusted by the staff of
MTC to suit the testing conditions (see point B).
The air pressures for the respective vehicle dynamics tests were
discussed with Mr. Jens Engelking at the first meeting held on 22 July
2010 and were set to:
Front:
Rear:
2.5 bar
2.9 bar
During the testing period, all of the tires were driven and evaluated on
the respective testing ground in accordance with the test modules of
the Motorrad TestCenter. The ambient conditions were very good for
all tests and remained constant throughout the entire testing period.

Test evaluation
A standard maximum of 20 points is awarded for all criteria in the
Motorrad TestCenter points evaluation system. This 20 point spread
allows tires of different designs and intended uses to be compared
within a test field.
Example:
Comparison between touring tires and the current sport or
supersport tires.
B.3
Test drivers
The evaluation of the tire pairings was carried out by two test drivers
who performed the testing and evaluation according to the same
procedure and based on standardized, stipulated criteria - see point C.
B.4
Weather conditions
11.05.2011 Test-Day_01 :
dry and sunny / clear sky
13.05.2011 Test-Day_02 :
dry and sunny / clear sky
The test tracks were in good condition and clean. Further details about
the weather conditions can be found with the evaluation results under
the "Test conditions" heading.
B.5
Test equipment
Measuring equipment used to document the test conditions:
Æ Infrared thermometer IR-380 (www.voltcraft.de)
Æ Tire pressure measuring device (www.flaig-praezission.de)
Æ Weather station WS 3600 (www.heavyweather.info)
Neutral lean angle
The values shown here represent the "neutral lean angle". This is the theoretical lean
angle calculated from the speed and turn radius without taking the overall center of
gravity and tire width into account.

Explanations of the Motorrad TestCenter test modules
C.1
Cornering / dry handling module
Cornering and dry handling were evaluated on the Bosch handling
course in Boxberg.
This course was used to simulate the typical riding situations
encountered on country roads.
On the handling course, the rider is seated in a sporty posture without
hanging off the motorcycle.
Here, selected test criteria such as steering characteristics, steering
forces and neutrality are evaluated on alternating bends.
All tests are recorded with a 2D system.
C.2
Cornering stability / adhesion module
Evaluation of the maximum adhesion is carried out on the test or race
track in sport riding mode
This course was used to simulate the typical riding situations
encountered on country roads.
On the handling course, the rider is seated in a sporty posture without
hanging off the motorcycle. Full lap times are not recorded for road
tires which are not intended for competition use.
The MTC creates opportunities for comparing adhesion and cornering
performance on defined sections of the track and in defined reference
corners.
Here, the speed, lean angle and steering angle are evaluated. The 2D
diagrams are created based on these recordings in order to support the
points evaluation with objective data.

Explanations of the Motorrad TestCenter test modules
C.3
Wet adhesion/wet handling module
Evaluation of the handling and cornering characteristics in wet
conditions is performed on a continuously watered handling course.
The riders are seated in a sporty posture without hanging off the
motorcycle. Lap times are not recorded for road tires which are not
intended for competition use.
The MTC creates opportunities for comparing adhesion and cornering
performance on defined sections of the track and in defined reference
corners.
Here, the speed, lean angle and steering angle are evaluated. The 2D
diagrams are created based on these recordings in order to support the
points evaluation with objective data.
Friction coefficient – as stated by track operator: 0,44 – 0,47 µ
C.4
Freeway / high-speed stability module
High-speed stability is tested on a section of the freeway without a
speed limit.
At maximum speed, the tire is confronted by a range of different
surfaces - normal road surface, damaged asphalt layer, bridge grooves
and road bumps.
The section of freeway selected for this test (A 81 Boxberg-Möckmühl)
features a perfect mixture of surface conditions for this purpose.

Positives /
+
o Very low steering force required during constant cornering,
motorcycle requires almost no force input and remains stable

cornering in a sporty style at lean angles of up to 44 degrees
(neutral lean angle) and when rapidly changing lean angle
o Good to very good adhesion at lean angles
o Good adhesion when accelerating out of curves
o Good to very good steering precision when entering and exiting
corners
o Good to very good cornering stability with a single rider
o Good stability when accelerating out of curves

Positives /
+
o Easy to handle during steering and in alternating curves
o Relatively forgiving adhesion limit range in curves/at lean angles
o Significant excess grip (grip balance) on front wheel
o Acceptable cornering during transition from wet to dry track
section
Negatives /
-
o Significantly less grip than Bridgestone BT 23

Conclusion
During the two days of testing, it was found that the new specification
of the Roadiac radial tire from Nankang represented a significant
improvement in terms of cornering stability, particularly at the front
wheel.
During the dry testing, it achieved almost the same cornering speeds
and section times as the BT 023 from Bridgestone.
Compared to the Bridgestone BT 023 pairing, the only improvements
the Roadiac tire needs are better handling and slightly greater stability
at extreme leans of over 40 degrees (neutral lean angle).
The merely sufficient shock absorption and self-damping at the high
standard air pressure of 2.5/2.9 bar remained unchanged.
However, the standard air pressure of 2.5/2.9 bar does not have a
negative impact on driving stability on the rough road and high-speed
sections.
Of particular note are the flawless, safe handling characteristics of the
Roadiac at top speed and the very stable cornering with a passenger.
During the wet testing the Roadiac surpassed the Avon Storm, both in
the points rating and in the section times, but was significantly inferior
to the Bridgestone BT 23 - although without any safety-relevant
defects or handling characteristics.
