Reporter’s Note:
I am honored to serve as your Eastern Province Reporter and I’m hoping that my efforts to do the best
job in this position are to your standards. I am proud to bring you the second edition of the Eastern
Province Khronical for this fraternal year. I felt it was important to highlight all the efforts that the
chapters in our Province put forth along with all the great things we do in the community, the great
accomplishments that we achieve collectively and individually. As you read this publication, if you
have any questions, comments, or concerns please email them to me [email protected].
As all of you know by now we have new leadership with a new administration in the Eastern Province
and we are looking forward to true guidance and stability. It has been over 5 years since we have been
truly stable as a province and now it is time for the flagship to lead again. With that in mind, “are you
doing all that you can as a Brother or Chapter to right our ship and keep it on course?” Only we know our limitations and level of effort
that we personally contribute to our chapters, the Eastern Province and to Kappa as a whole!
Yours in the Bond

On June 13, 2015, the Alexandria Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter (AF) hosted
its 39th Chartering Day at the Embassy Suites Alexandria in Alexandria, Virginia. The
history of the chapter dates to June 5, 1976, when a charter was conferred and presented
to the chapter by Dr. James B. Abrams, Jr., Eastern Province Polemarch, before a large
audience in the International Room of the Bolling AFB, DC Officer's Club. AlexandriaFairfax (VA) is the first alumni chapter of Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc., to be located

recently Senate-confirmed Colonel Charles Hamilton. Hamilton spoke on his history with the
Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter and how his time of leadership of the Chapter influenced
many of the decisions he made in his personal, military, and civilian career. He highlighted how he
often leans back on the lessons learned from his time as the Chapter’s Polemarch and encouraged
every member to continue to do their part in making Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) the standard of
excellence for not only the Northern Virginia community but throughout the Fraternity.
Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter Hosts Another Successful KAMP KAPPA
This July marked the 22nd Anniversary of the Alexandria-Fairfax (VA) Alumni Chapter’s (AF) annual
signature event, Kamp Kappa! This year the chapter hosted more than 55 students at the camp and it was
once again an overwhelming success. Since 1993, hundreds of young men (10- through 16-year-old) have
been sponsored by AF chapter members to attend this camp at no charge! Along with individual donations
and sponsorship from the AF members, companies such as KPMG, Cox Communications, SATECH,
NucoreVision, Booz Allen Hamilton, and ManTech have made contributions to help fund the camp. The
camp is currently held at 350-acre Camp William B. Snyder "Cubworld" in Haymarket, Va. Over a six-day
period, activities are managed by professional
counselors, Fraternity brothers, and volunteers
from members of the local DC area Kappa chapters.
The young men receive a first-hand experience of “roughing it” in a rustic/wilderness
environment, while other activities offer off-site tours to local facilities that expose them
to environmental and ecological education. Armed with only their backpacks, sleeping
bags, and the thirst for adventure, the young men are taught outdoor survival skills,
leadership skills, military discipline, and overall life lessons designed to educate and test
the young men both mentally and physically. One of the first lessons the young men
learn is how to properly set up a camp site, build a campfire, and how to arrange their
sleeping quarters so as to prevent unwanted guests of the surrounding woodlands. Other
outdoor activities for the following days include rock climbing, swimming, drills on
proper military formation and flag raising protocol each morning. There are planned
activities each night that evolve around themes such as military night, step shows exhibitions by the MuMu (George Mason University)
undergraduate chapter, barbeques for the boys, and fireside chats about young adulthood.
Kamp Kappa also takes this six-day opportunity to expose the young men to the different social challenges and realities they may experience as young black men, which includes field trips to the local Alexandria Sherriff’s department
and a tour of the William G. Truesdale Adult Detention Center located in Alexandria, Va.
