Sexual assault prevention trainer offers proactive approach to prevention
By Shayna Brouker

“If you could keep one
person safe, who would
it be?” asks the petite
woman of a roomful of
military police men and
women. “Bring that person to your mind’s eye
and constantly reflect on
that person throughout
this training.”
“I can’t change the
whole world, not on my
own” said Jennifer Quain,
a trained sexual assault
victim advocate and prevention educator, during
the rape culture and consent awareness class.“But
if I can convince you to
say, ‘I’m going to stop
using the words slut or
whore to stop rape culture,’ I’ll take it.”
Staff Sgt. Kasey Trapp,
platoon sergeant for the
529th Military Police
Company, asked Quain
to speak with his platoon
for the company’s weekly
Sexual Harassment and
Assault Prevention training after hearing about her
background through word
of mouth.
“When you have 21plus years of learning
one thing, it might take
seeing something else
every week to get it ingrained,” Trapp said. “But
this week we wanted to
try something new, something proactive instead of
reactive.”
Quain was trained
through the Missouri
State Coalition Against
Domestic and Sexual Violence and Phelps County

for domestic and sexual
violence, a hospital sexual
assault advocate and a
prevention educator. During her job at a women’s

Second thoughts
Reclaiming Valentine’s
Day for everyone
By Shayna Brouker
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
Public Affairs Office
It’s here again.
Dreaded by singletons (and boyfriends,
fiancees and husbands) — adored by couples
(read: girlfriends, fiancees and wives) — it’s
Valentine’s Day.
“Corporate scheme contrived to make single
people feel like schmucks,” some of you snarl
as your coworker shamelessly flaunts her dozen
roses and heart-shaped chocolates.
But I propose
a new outlook for
all. Bloody history
(Google “Saint Valentine’s Day massacre”)
and questionable validity as a true holiday
aside, it’s still worth
celebrating.
V-Day doesn’t have to be the guilt-inducing,
single-shaming doomsday it’s come to be.
Tomorrow, single or taken, take back Valentine’s Day as a celebration of the best love of
all. As the late great Whitney Houston sang it
best: “Learning to love yourself is the greatest
love of all.”
In other words, learn to at least like yourself
and you’ll likely live happily ever after, with
or without a partner. Define yourself not by
a relationship, but by your own merit and accomplishments.
You can’t truly appreciate anyone — neighbor,
coworker, cousin, friend or spouse — if you don’t
think “you” is pretty great too. Self-confidence
is sexy, makes you rock at life and attracts those
who appreciate your awesomeness.
So this Feb. 14, whether you’re solo or attached, “Kick Start (Your) Heart” and treat
yourself nice. Go out for a steak dinner (and call
the next day), watch your favorite movie, check
out that museum your ex never wanted to visit.
List 10 traits that make you terrific. Plan that
trip of a lifetime. Start your degree. Get a massage. Buy a bag of those Dove chocolates with
the corny quotes inside the wrappers and take
them to heart.
Me? I’m fulfilling a lifelong dream of visiting
Italy and spending the weekend in Rome.
With a little TLC today, and every day, fall
“Crazy in Love” with you.
Happy Valentine’s Day.

Hessen Area “Americans Working Around
the Globe,” or AWAG volunteers, gathered at the
Wiesbaden Entertainment Center Jan. 28 for their
annual conference focused on developing the “total
volunteer.”
The theme of this year’s conference was “Mapping
to a Successful You — through Strength, Leadership, Mentoring and Job Skills.” Approximately 50
volunteers in the Wiesbaden community heard from
speakers on a wide range of topics from “Navigating
your Volunteer Life” to “Staying Healthy, Slim and
Sassy in 2014.”
Pamela Shackleford, web technology chair on
the AWAG board of governors, science teacher and
self-described “way-too-busy techie” taught a seminar
called “Apps for Life.” She reviewed apps that ease
everyday life, such as iPassword, a tool that securely
stores passwords offline, and Skitch, which facilitates
sharing edited documents and photos.
“We’re a blessed community to have such a wealth
of trained and accomplished individuals,” said Dianne Longo, Hessen area AWAG representative and
Wiesbaden Community Spouses Club volunteer who
organized this year’s conference. “Their willingness
to donate their time is unbelievable.”
AWAG is a nonprofit, private organization. A
volunteer board of governors administers AWAG,
which represents all branches of the armed forces
and civilians serving within the European com-
munity.
The mission of AWAG is to train, strengthen and
connect volunteers, their organizations and their
communities.
“It’s invigorating,” said Karen Russ, AWAG
president. “The speakers are dynamic and relevant.
The delegates leave refreshed and ready to take on
greater leadership roles.”
Jennifer Cain, Family Readiness Group leader for
5th Signal Command’s Headquarters and Headquarters
Company and a former Soldier with 15 year’s service,
attended to gain insight into her new role and develop
herself as a leader.
“I liked all the seminars,” she said. “‘Navigating
your Volunteer Life’ showed me which traits fit best,
and the resume and job session gave lots of great
information.”
AWAG started in 1946 when Margaret Biddell,
wife of the commanding general of the U.S. Army
of Occupation, formed a board of eight women to
organize the delivery of relief aid sent by stateside
clubs and church groups to post-war Germany.
“Although times and fashions have changed, the
delegate from over 50 years ago would find a kindred
spirit in today’s conference participant,” said Longo.
Volunteers in the community are invited to participate in AWAG conferences. The 58th Annual Training
and Leadership Seminar will be held May 4-8 at the
Edelweiss Lodge and Resort in Garmisch, Germany.

Threat awareness training to be held starting in March
Service members and Department of the Army civilians are required to attend annual Threat Awareness
and Reporting Program training. The training takes
about one and a half hours and addresses subject areas
including espionage, terrorism, subversion, sabotage
and insider threat indicators.
Training will be held from 9-10:30 a.m. and 2-3:30
p.m. at the Taunus Theater in the Hainerberg Shopping
Center on March 13, June 19, Sept. 18 and Dec. 11.

that rumor. While the garage is not a storage facility
and is not meant for long-term storage of vehicles
and other items — barracks residents, like everyone
else who lives and works on Clay Kaserne, are highly
encouraged to use the 1,100-space garage on a daily
basis to free up spaces around the installation for
short-term parking.
Praise for IACS
Ursula G. commented: One of my employees
noticed this morning that his installation pass expired that day. IACS personnel were able to assist
him on short notice, and he now is in possession of
valid documentation again. This expedited service
is truly remarkable, and I want to thank Mr. (William) Trabucco and his IACS staff for this excellent
customer service.
Response: Ursula, glad to hear the employee was
taken care of quickly and efficiently. Thank you also
to the IACS staff for helping make “Wiesbaden: Your
home in Germany.”
Volunteering in SHARP effort
Dan S. asked: Is there any way that adult family
members can get involved in the garrison SHARP
(Sexual Harassment and Assault Response and Prevention) program in a victim advocate function? And
thank you to the medical team for their after-duty-hour
support with the SHARP program.
Response: Thanks for offering your services in the
effort to eliminate sexual harassment and assault in
our community. I would advise you to contact Army
Community Service, and in particular members of
the Family Advocacy Program, to see in what capacity your volunteer support can play a role. You can
reach ACS at civ (0611) 4080-254. Thanks again
for your community involvement.
AFN reception in the barracks
Susan N. asked: Why do I need to pay for a
set-up box from TKS cable to get free AFN on my
TV in my barracks room? Housing on Clay Kaserne
receives their AFN free. They do not have to pay for
a set-up box; why should single Soldiers living in the
barracks have to pay.
Response: Thanks for pointing this out, Susan.
All barracks residents should be able to connect to
the outlet in their rooms to receive the basic AFN
television at no cost. What appears to have happened
is that when wireless Internet and TKS packaging
was installed, that connection was cut or lost in the
process. The garrison S-6, Directorate of Public
Works, Housing and Transformation Stationing
Management Office are working with TKS to get it
restored. Sorry for the inconvenience and thanks
again for bringing it to the respective agencies’ attention for action.
Unattended children
Andy A. observed: From what I understand, small
children are not to be left alone in the gym; however,
this is happening on a daily basis. I’ve personally
witnessed children running around unattended several
times, and I believe it’s dangerous. In fact, I almost
ran into a toddler because he was left alone near the
sitting area while his parents worked out. I’ve also
witnessed parents unaware of their children screaming for them, because they were too focused on their
workout.
Response: Andy, garrison guidelines explicitly
state that no child under the age of 16 is to be left
unattended at the fitness center. It is a potentially
hazardous situation — not only for the child, but
also for the patrons of the fitness center. Thanks for
helping remind parents that they help keep everyone
safer when their children are properly attended.

Training helps keep FRGs relevant
By Shayna Brouker
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
So, you’ve volunteered to be the Family Readiness Group leader for your spouse’s unit. What now?
First, erase all stereotypes from your mind. FRGs
are not coffee clubs, a fundraising organization or
active only during deployments. They are the link
between the command and family members, morale
support for fellow spouses and a force multiplier. And
they’re more relevant than ever at an overseas location,
despite a slower or nonexistent deployment cycle.
“Even though we are decreasing the number of
deployments, we will see the aftermath of a high
op-tempo, multiple-times-deployed force for a long
time,” remarked Annikka Trabucco, outreach coordinator and Army Family Action Program manager
for U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Army Community
Service. “Effects from prior deployments will continue
to develop and affect the Soldiers and their families
for the foreseeable future.”
Trabucco has been conducting FRG training for
two years. FRGs support the whole unit — Soldiers,
family members and the civilians who work for the
unit — a need that never goes away, she said.
Particularly in overseas locations, FRGs serve
as a ready-made community for newcomers. Many
spouses are young, recently married. They are overwhelmed not only by the prospect of taking care of
their Soldiers and learning a new identity as a military
spouse, but getting acclimated to a new culture, said
Julie Wahlers, FRG co-leader for the 529th Military
Police Company and victim advocate coordinator for
the Family Advocacy Program at ACS.
She and her husband received orders to Germany
the same day they got married. Soon after arriving
she became the FRG co-leader and found an extended
family. Members help newcomers learn the train and
bus systems and venture off-post as a group so navigating German culture and customs is less intimidating.
“I absolutely think FRGs are still relevant,” she
said. “It’s critical that we build a support system,”

recounting numerous times she’s driven FRG members to the hospital when the service member was
away at training.
FRG leaders receive specialized training for positions such as leader, treasurer and key caller. Leaders
discover the importance of building a solid relationship
with the unit commander. The 529th commander is
very involved and makes it obvious that the FRG is
a priority, said Wahlers.
Treasurers learn the difference between appropriated funds and informal funds and how to properly
fundraise. Key callers learn confidentiality guidelines,
good communication skills and how to handle difficult people.
Jennifer Quain, an active member of the 529th
MP Company FRG, came to training to understand
her official function better to help the FRG grow
and improve.
“FRGs can get kind of messy and leave a bad taste,”
she said. “Going to training can help demystify some
of that and bring the focus back to what the purpose
is — not to raise money, but to support families.”
For military spouses, it’s a chance to give back
to their own.
“This is the thing — it’s not just a job for him.
This is a lifestyle,” said Wahlers. “When I was dating
him, I didn’t realize that. Now that we’re overseas,
if his phone rings, it trumps everything I have on the
table. But these women understand that your life isn’t
over even though you’ve married into the military.”
Matt Galonka, Mobilization/Deployment program
manager, will conduct more training in the future.

Installation Management Command-Europe
welcomed a new senior enlisted leader during an
assumption of responsibility ceremony Jan. 31 at
Sembach Kaserne.
Command Sgt. Maj. Romeo Montez III assumed
responsibility as the sixth command sergeant major
of Installation Management Command-Europe since
its founding on Oct. 7, 2002.
Montez replaces Command Sgt. Maj. Jeffrey Hartless, selected to serve as the senior enlisted adviser
to Lt. Gen. Michael Ferriter, IMCOM commander,
in San Antonio, Texas. Montez previously served as
command sergeant major of the U.S. Army Garrison
Benelux in Chievres, Belgium.
During the ceremony Montez said he was deeply
humbled by the opportunity to serve the Army’s Soldiers, NCOs, officers, civilians and family members.
“Your service matters. It protects and promotes

the democratic values we hold dear,” he said. “Your
service to our nation and our allies keeps a promise to
American citizens and our transatlantic partners that
our values are worth defending — together.
“As the Army’s home in Europe, Installation
Management Command is entrusted by the American people to provide caring support and stability to
Soldiers and their families,” said Kathleen Marin,
IMCOM-Europe director. “We make a difference in
the lives of service members and their families as
they serve to make a difference for the security of
our nation and that of our allies.
“In carrying out the IMCOM-Europe mission,
only the best leadership will do, from our uniformed
officers and NCOs, to our civil servants,” she said.
“Command Sgt. Maj. Montez has an impeccable
record of selfless service around the globe that spans
nearly 30 years,” said Marin. “Indeed, he has mastered
the art of Soldiering and installation management as
few others have.
“As a quartermaster expert, he’s spent the majority
of his career sustaining our Army around the globe.
From Korea to Kentucky and Germany to Iraq, Command Sgt. Maj. Montez brings with him a global
perspective to our critical mission,” she said.

Aviators revisit WWII history during castle retreat
By Shayna Brouker
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
Public Affairs Office
From medieval princes to Nazi youth
to SS elite, and finally, Army aviators,
Wewelsburg Castle has hosted a diverse
cast of residents since its construction
in 1603.
Helicopter crew members from the
U.S. Army Europe Command Aviation
Detachment, along with Capt. Andrew
Shriver, chaplain for the 1st Battalion,
214th Aviation Regiment, visited this
historic, triangle-shaped Renaissance
castle three hours north of Wiesbaden
hosted by the British Army chaplaincy.
The topic: moral leadership.
The Lübbecke Hitler Youth camp,
Wewelsburg castle and nearby Niederhagen concentration camp were once
an ideological haven for SS elite who
dreamed it would be the “Center of the
World,” or at least Germania, the future
German empire.
Today, British Army Chaplains
run Church House, a sanctuary for
spiritual retreat and courses on stress
management, relationship enrichment
and moral leadership. After Germany
surrendered, British forces took over
the former Hitler Youth camp building,
with a ship-like interior that symbolized

ruins, like the cookhouse, gatehouse and

the early 1990s and petitioned the town
council to build a memorial.

Wiesbaden Jewish community welcomes U.S. members
Story and photo by Anemone Rueger
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden Public Affairs Office
Members of the Wiesbaden Jewish community
and the U.S. military community mingled for a meetand-greet brunch Feb. 2 at the city’s synagogue in
Friedrich Strasse. Jewish leaders had reached out
to the garrison to welcome interested Americans to
the synagogue’s many spiritual, cultural and educational events, whereas garrison leaders welcomed
the opportunity to offer another place of worship
and socializing to interested community members.
“We want to warmly thank you for this wonderful opportunity you are offering to us,” said Col.
David Carstens, U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
commander. “Since we don’t have a rabbi, it’s great
that we can rely on your spiritual leadership and
friendship.”
Making reference to the recent scripture reading
on “giving from the heart,” Rabbi Avremi Nussbaum
said, “U.S. Soldiers volunteer to take much risk to

unteer today to have you here. What do we both get
for what we give? We do hope you enjoy your time
here. As far as we are concerned, looking around here
seeing you all with the children, what you bring to
our community is life. And we need that life.”
The relationship goes back to the years immediately after the end of World War II, when the U.S.
military chaplaincy rebuilt the Jewish community
after the horrors and decimation of the war. Today, the
Jewish congregation has more than 800 members from
many different countries, including a large majority
with Russian as their mother tongue.
The Wiesbaden Jewish congregation offers weekly
services, Sabbath get-togethers, celebration of all the
big Jewish festivals, themed brunches, numerous
learning opportunities, dance, cooking and Hebrew
lessons, local Jewish Wiesbaden history tours and
more. It is located on Friedrich Strasse 31/33, 65185
Wiesbaden. (Note the synagogue is located in the
backyard.)

‘Respect in Every Style’
Maj. William McGlothlin shares tips for encouraging recycling and energy conservation
with members of the Wiesbaden High School’s Environmental Club.
Environmental Club
Students look for ways to help save resources
Story and photo by

U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
Public Affairs Office
Changing a culture doesn’t
happen overnight.
That’s one of the messages
Maj. William McGlothlin, operations officer for the U.S. Army
Garrison Wiesbaden Directorate
of Public Works, shared with
Wiesbaden High School’s Environmental Club during a visit
to the school Feb. 5.
“How did Germany become
this great energy-conscious,
recycling culture? They found
that the most efficient way was
to go into the schools — to start
reaching people at an early age
— and to influence a behavioral
change at the young, impressionable recycler level,” said
McGlothlin. “We, as Americans, have a lot of catching up
to do as regards recycling and
the environment.”
Members of Wiesbaden’s
Recycling Club, which began
this school year, invited McGlothlin to share ideas about
how to broaden their efforts,
which currently include a weekly paper recycling program.
Like Hainerberg Elementary
School, which recently earned
the garrison’s Green Boot
certificate for its proactive environmental protection efforts,
members of the high school’s
club want to increase awareness and overall participation
in helping conserve energy and
limited resources.
“All of the classrooms have
paper recycling bins, and we
go around and pick it up once
a week,” said senior John Arnold, an Environmental Club
member.
With McGlothlin’s help, students brainstormed ways to increase their efforts. Suggestions
ranged from always ensuring
that computers, monitors and
lights are turned off when not
in use; outside lights remain off
during daylight hours; signs are
posted encouraging everyone to
turn off electrical devices and
lights; and other recyclable materials are disposed of properly.
Raising awareness
“It’s all about raising awareness,” McGlothlin said, pointing out that the U.S. Army
and garrison commander, Col.
David Carstens, are determined
to reduce overall energy and
refuse disposal expenses. Installing solar panels on new
structures, greater recycling
and finding better ways to manage resources are all aimed at
reducing the garrison’s energy
bill, which last year topped $32
million. “It’s about being good
neighbors — good stewards of
the environment.”
“I feel that if we’re going to
accomplish something, we’ve
got to do it with the kids,” said
Wiesbaden High School environmental science and math
teacher David Craig, adding
that getting fellow teachers to
join in the effort is critical. “The
kids follow models and to get
the kids to do their part we’ve
got to get the adults to model
that same behavior.”
Craig added that he would
like the Environmental Club to
work with local organizations
to promote recycling – such as
encouraging the Commissary to
find some kind of an incentive
to get people to use re-useable
bags when shopping.
“Another initiative is to get
parents involved in the Environmental Club,” Craig said,
inviting anyone interested in the
high school effort to attend one
of the club’s weekly Wednesday
meetings at the school.
Parents interested in getting
involved with the school’s Environmental Club should call the
school at civ (0611) 705-2260.

Staying safe while enjoying a German tradition
By Roland Geib
U.S. Army Garrison Wiesbaden
Safety Office
We are now in the middle of
the German Fasching season —
Germany’s “fifth season.”
That means a lot of fun
when you attend those famous
meetings and assemblies of the
German Fashing Clubs — and
not to forget the costume balls
(see the Things to do newsletter
at www.wiesbaden.army.mil/
sites/about/ttd/TTD.pdf) where
you can dance the night away.
The Fasching season reaches
its peak on the “Crazy Days”
March 1-4.
In Wiesbaden it starts on
Saturday with the Children’s
Parade which has a more familystyle atmosphere. Several local towns and cities also hold
Fasching parades on Sunday
— including Wiesbaden and
Frankfurt. But the main event
in the Rhein-Main Region is
Mainz’s parade on Rose Monday which is often more than
six kilometers long. One last
Fasching parade in the area is
held in Frankfurt-Heddernheim
(known to the locals as “Little
Paris”) on Fasching Tuesday.
The three most famous
Fasching parades — Cologne,
Düsseldorf and Mainz — are
shown on German television.
In the Mainz area Fasching
is at least as important as Christmas, and the Fasching Parade
on Rose Monday is one of the
most famous ones in Germany.
An average of 500,000 people
will watch this parade making
its way through downtown.
Have fun, but for your wellbeing and safety, don’t forget
there are several hazards that
you should keep in mind:
F Keep your children under
close supervision if you don’t
want them to get lost in the
crowd. If you are standing in the
street to watch the parade, there
is a lot of pushing and shoving
since parade participants on

other goodies into the crowd.
If you are standing too close to
the curb you might get pushed
into the way of a float or horse.
So try to find a spot in the back
of the crowd to view the various
parade participants.
F Also be on the lookout
for flying objects such as candy
and toys thrown from the floats.
Those little sweets really can
do some damage to your eye
when they hit.
F Alcohol is the biggest
danger you will encounter. You
will see people carrying a bottle
of wine or beer, and some of
them might offer you a sip. Remember that mixing even a little
alcohol and driving can cost
you your license. Rather plan
on taking public transportation

to the parades – it’s safer and
you won’t have to hassle with
almost non-existent parking on
parade days.
F Remember to dress
warmly, and if you dress up
for the parade, be sure to
wear comfortable clothing that
doesn’t hinder your movement
or vision.

The Monuments Men (PG-13) — In a race
against time, a crew of art historians and
museum curators unite to recover renowned works of art stolen by the Nazis
before they are destroyed or disappear into
private collections. Stars George Clooney,
Daniel Craig, Bill Murray, Cate Blanchett
and Matt Damon.
The Lego Movie (PG) — Emmet, an ordinary,
rules-following, perfectly average Lego
figure is mistakenly identified as the most
extraordinary person and the key to saving
the world. He is drafted into a fellowship
of strangers on an epic quest to stop an
evil tyrant, a journey for which Emmet is
hopelessly and hilariously underprepared.
Starring the voices of Chris Pratt, Will Ferrell, Morgan Freeman, Elizabeth Banks
and Liam Neeson.
Robocop (PG-13) — In the year 2028 multinational conglomerate OmniCorp is at the
center of robot technology. Alex Murphy
(Joel Kinnaman) is a loving husband, father
and good cop doing his best to stem the
tide of crime and corruption in Detroit. After
he is critically injured in the line of duty,
OmniCorp utilizes their remarkable science
of robotics to save Alex’s life. He returns to
the streets of his beloved city with amazing
new abilities, but with issues a regular man
has never had to face before. Also stars
Gary Oldman and Samuel L. Jackson.
About Last Night (R) — Danny (played by
Rob Lowe) doesn’t want to get serious.
Debbie (Demi Moore) doesn’t want to
get used. After drinks at a favorite Chicago hangout, Danny and Debbie head to
Danny’s place to indulge in the predictable
singles’ quest — the one night stand. Also
stars James Belushi and Elizabeth Perkins.
Winter’s Tale (PG-13) — Set in 1916 and
present-day Manhattan, this is the story of
Peter Lake (Colin Farrell), a thief who falls
in love with Beverly Penn (Jessica Brown
Findlay), a dying girl who occupies one of
the houses he breaks into. Lake is saved
from the insane Irish gangster Pearly Soames (Russell Crowe) and his henchmen
by Athansor, a mysterious white horse who
becomes his guardian angel.
Endless Love (PG-13) — Gabriella Wilde
and Alex Pettyfer star as a privileged girl
and a charismatic boy whose instant desire
sparks a love affair made only more reckless by parents trying to keep them apart.
3 Days to Kill (R) — Secret Service Agent
Ethan Runner discovers he’s dying and
decides to retire in order to reconnect with
his estranged family. But when the Secret
Service offers him access to an experimental drug that could save his life in exchange
for one last assignment, he finds himself
trying to juggle his family, his mission and
the drug’s hallucinatory side-effects. Stars
Hailee Steinfeld and Kevin Costner.

to call Peter Krauss. His ongoing partnership with Atlantic Trust and American
Auto Protectors will certainly be able to find you reliable, price-worthy insurance
that is there for when you need it the most.
