History of the KCAC
The Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference, commonly called “The Kansas Conference,” is a prominent intercollegiate
athletics conference comprised of ten outstanding independent or private institutions of higher education in the state.
The origins of the KCAC are traced to February 15, 1890, when the Kansas Intercollegiate Athletic Association became
the result of the first successful attempt at organization among Kansas colleges, “to promote and regulate amateur
intercollegiate athletics.” At that time the association or conference included not only private universities and colleges
but also Kansas Agriculture College (now KSU), Kansas University, and Washburn University. Football seems to have
been the major sponsored sport, and Baker University won the championship for the first three or four years.
In about 1902 this early association became allied with the Kansas College Athletic Conference, a group which was the
first to adopt a definite set of rules and regulations. It also promoted an annual track and field meet which has continued yearly since, except for World War years. Basketball has been sponsored since 1904. Football was revived in 1907.
Tennis began as early as 1912. Golf was added in 1923. By this time the name of the conference had been altered to
the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference; it had grown to 17 college members and two allied members: Baker, Bethany, Bethel, College of Emporia, Fairmount (now WSU), Friends, Kansas Wesleyan, KSTC of Emporia (now ESU), KSTC of
Hays (now FHSU), KSTC of Pittsburg (now PSU), McPherson, Ottawa, St.Benedict’s (now Benedictine), St.Mary’s, Sterling (formerly Cooper), Southwestern, and Washburn, and with St.John’s and Kansas City University (Kansas) as allied
members. Kansas University and Kansas Aggies had dropped out earlier to join other conferences. In 1923 the College
of Emporia, KSTC of Emporia, KSTC of Hays, KSTC of Pittsburg, Wichita (formerly Fairmount), Southwestern, and Washburn withdrew to form the Central Conference.
The present legal entity comes from a reorganization of the conference when the predecessor Kansas Intercollegiate
Athletic Conference formally disbanded on December 1, 1928, and a new conference was formed which again was
called the Kansas College Athletic Conference. The members were Baker, Bethany, Kansas Wesleyan, McPherson,
Ottawa, and St.Mary’s colleges. At that time sportswriters quickly gave the KCAC league a nickname: the “Little Six,”
in contrast to the Big Six (which became Big Eight, now Big 12) which also was organized in 1928. St.Mary’s College
was discontinued in 1931. The College of Emporia returned to the fold in 1933, and Bethel was readmitted in 1939.
Friends, a former member of the KIAC, was admitted in 1953. Sterling and Southwestern were approved for membership in 1958. In 1968 Tabor College and St. Mary of the Plains College were admitted to make twelve members in the
conference, and the conference was organized into Southern and Northern divisions until 1970 -- when Baker, College
of Emporia, and Ottawa withdrew to join two separate Missouri-based conferences. In the mid-1970s the formal name
was changed again to Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference. In 1975 women’s intercollegiate athletics were incorporated into programs of the KCAC. Ottawa was readmitted in 1981, bringing the conference membership to 10. In 1992
St.Mary of the Plains College in Dodge City left the conference and eventually closed. In 1999 Saint Mary College-Leavenworth joined to return the KCAC membership to ten institutions.
The “Kansas Conference” (KCAC) continues to be an all-Kansas conference. The KCAC is an affiliated conference of the
National Association of intercollegiate Athletics with headquarters in Kansas City, Missouri. Today the KCAC sponsors
conference intercollegiate athletics in football, volleyball, men’s cross country, women’s cross country, men’s soccer,
women’s soccer, men’s basketball, women’s basketball, men’s indoor track and field, women’s indoor track and field,
men’s outdoor track and field, women’s outdoor track and field, baseball, softball, men’s golf, women’s tennis, and
men’s tennis.

Andy Lambert - Head Coach/Athletic Director
Andy Lambert is entering his seventh season as the head
coach of the Sterling College Warrior football program and his fifth
year as Athletic Director.
In his past five seasons, Lambert has gone 33-16, leading the
Warriors to top three finishes in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC) during four of those seasons.
In 2009, the Warriors finished the season with an overall
record of 6-4 and finished fourth in the KCAC. During the season,
the Warriors led the KCAC in scoring defense. The Warrior defense
only gave up 17.3 points per game. On offense, the Warriors ranked
second in the KCAC in rushing offense. Offensively, the Warriors were
able to gain 173.7 yards per game on the ground.
Prior to coming to Sterling, Lambert served for seven years as the head football coach at Trinity
International University in Deerfield, Illinois. During Lambert’s last three seasons at Trinity, Lambert led
the Trojans to an overall record of 22-11. In 2003, Trinity finished with an overall record of 8-3 and received a #19 national ranking in the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA). The Trojans
were also Mid-States West co-conference champions in 2003.
A native of Smith Center, Kansas, Lambert played football for legendary high school coach Roger
Barta at Smith Center High School. After graduating from Smith Center High School, Lambert played
wide receiver at Dodge City Community College in Dodge City, Kansas.
From Dodge City Community College, Lambert transferred to Trinity International University
where he played receiver during his junior and senior seasons.
Lambert holds a master’s degree in education from Chicago State University and a bachelor’s
degree in physical education from Trinity International University.
Andy and his wife Betsy reside in Sterling with their four daughters: Hannah, Lydia, Emma, and
Sylvia.

Chuck Lambert - Asst. Head Coach/Def. Corrdinator
Chuck Lambert begins his seventh season as Defensive Coordinator for the Sterling College Warrior football program in 2010.
Lambert’s defense ranked first in the KCAC and ninth in the NAIA in scoring defense in
2009, building Lambert’s streak of having a defense in the top 25 in the nation in scoring
defense to four straight seasons.
Prior to coming to Sterling, Lambert served as head football coach at Lockwood High
School in Lockwood, Missouri for five years. During that time, Lambert posted an overall
record of 43-14 and was state runner-up in Missouri Class 1A in 2001.
Lambert served as a graduate assistant football coach at Trinity International University
for one year following a successful playing career at Trinity.
Coach Lambert is also a graduate of tradition rich Kansas prep powerhouse, Smith Center High School, where he
played quarterback for the Redmen.
Lambert holds a master’s degree in sports management from American Public University and a bachelor’s degree
in elementary education from Trinity International University.
Chuck and his wife, Kim, reside in Sterling with their four children: Caleb, Aly, Jake, and Anna.
Brian Fish - Offensive Coordinator
Brian Fish enters his fifth season as offensive coordinator for the Sterling College Warrior football program.
Over the past four seasons, Fish’s offense has produced 14 All-Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference First Team selections and one American Football Coaches Association First
Team All-American.
Prior to coming to Sterling, Fish served as an assistant football coach at Malone College
in Ohio. From 2000-2005, Fish as QB coach and passing coordinator helped produce the #14
and #20 ranked offense in 2002 and 2004 respectively, two all-conference quarterbacks, and
the #9 ranked QB in the nation in 2004.
Fish spent his playing days as a member of the Olivet Nazarene University football team
for five seasons. Fish played Receiver and Tight End for Olivet having garnered First Team All
Conference as well as Honorable Mention All American on the 1998 team that made it to the NAIA National Championship game.
Fish holds a master’s degree in teaching and a bachelor’s degree in biology both from Olivet Nazarene University.
Brian and his wife, Jodi resides in Sterling with their daughter, Culley and are expecting their second child in
December.

Hosea Bell - Defensive Line

No stranger to holding the
whistle, Bell served from 1989-1992
as an assistant football coach at St.
Mary of the Plains College located
in Dodge City, Kansas, and on the Sterling College staff from
1997-2003 including a stint as the defensive coordinator for
the Warriors.
Gabe Eliserio begins his first
year as Inside Linebackers and
Special Teams Coordinator for
Sterling College.
In 2009, Eliserio coached the
defensive secondary at Dordt College where the Defenders ranked
#5 in the nation for pass defense.
Coach Bell holds a bachelor’s degree in social work
from Tabor College, where Bell was a fullback for four years.
Eliserio is familiar with Andy
Lambert’s system, having played for Lambert at Sterling
where he earned KCAC All Conference Honorable Mention
status as a defensive back and played in the 2008 Senior
Bowl Classic. While Eliserio played for the Warriors, the
2007 Warrior defense also ranked #8 in the nation in pass
defense efficiency and #16 in the nation in overall scoring
defense.
Hosea, his wife Pam, and their nine children (Alyssa, LaChelle, Ashli, Lyric, Arinna, Trevonte, Quentin, Chrys
and Kendrick) reside in Sterling.
Eliserio holds a master’s degree in education and
sports administration from East Central University and a
bachelor’s degree in exercise science from Sterling College.
Travis Tesone - Wide Receivers

Adam Langvardt - RB/Strength & Conditioning

season with the Warriors, continuing his work with the wide receivers.
Adam Langvardt enters his second season as running backs and
strength and conditioning coach

Tesone began his collegiate
coaching at Greenville College in
Illinois and also played for Coach
Lambert at Trinity International.
Langvardt was an All-Conference
running back for the Warriors
in the 2006 and 2007 seasons,
having averaged 5.4 yards per
rush over those two seasons.
Langvardt also gained 1,200 yards
combined with six touchdowns.
Having played running back and
slot back during college, Tesone brings successful experience to the skill positions. Tesone started all but one game
in his four year career with a trip to the NAIA playoffs as a
starter.
Langvardt hold a bachelor’s degree in exercise science and education from Sterling College.
Tesone holds a bachelor’s degree in physical education from Trinity International.
Travis is married to wife Ashley, who also assists
with cross country and track.

2010 Outlook
Rebounding in 2010
The Warriors look to come back strong in 2010 following a 2009 finish of 6-4, 5-3 in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC). Sterling returns seven starters both on offense and on defense. The
experience will help, as the Warriors face a tough stretch in late September and early October, facing
the top three 2009 finishers in the KCAC in back to back weeks.
Offensively, the Warriors return senior running back Rashard Colquitt. Colquitt led the Warriors in rushing yards in 2009, averaging 83.5 yards per game. In 2010, Colquitt will have the opportunity to gain
large chunks of yardage on the ground behind returning senior linemen Mike Danski, Tory King, and
Chandler Keenan. Even with the return of senior Keoki Burbank, the quarterback position is an area of
concern for Sterling. With Matt James coming to Sterling to play wide receiver from Golden West College, the Warriors are looking to improve on a passing offense that ranked last in the KCAC in 2009.
Last season, the Sterling offense became one dimensional, relying strictly on the run. In 2010, the Warriors are looking to add balance to their offensive attack. Eli Copeland and James Morley will compliment the incoming James at wide receiver.
“We must get better in our passing game to have a chance. Our ability to protect our skill level and
talent at receiver, and our quarterback play must all improve,” said Sterling College head coach Andy
Lambert.
On the defensive side of the ball, Sterling will have to adjust to the loss of linebackers Justin Hejney and
Austin Kingsbury. However, the Warrior defense returns seven starters along with safeties Brock Frank
and Tate Arnold from the #9 ranked scoring defense in the NAIA and the top ranked scoring defense in
the KCAC. To help retool the defense, the Warriors have brought in defensive lineman Kyle Dillard from
the College of the Redwoods. Dillard will help KCAC All-Conference Honorable Mention defensive lineman Mike Jones solidify the Sterling College defensive line.
“Our defense gave up the fewest points in the conference last season. We must replace a safety and
get very good play from our outside linebackers early to be a great defense this year,” Lambert said.
The schedule is favorable for the Warriors this year with six home games and only four road games.
Five of the six home games are also KCAC contests. Sterling kicks off the season at home on September 11 in a KCAC match-up against Southwestern College.

Road Troubles
The Sterling College Warrior football program finished the 2009 season with a record of six wins and
four losses while placing fourth in the Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference (KCAC).
At home, the Warriors were able to protect the home field, winning three out of their four home games.
The only home loss came against eventual KCAC Champion Ottawa University in a tightly contested
game.
On the road, the Warriors were able to win three of the six games. Out of the three losses on the road,
the closest game was a 21-0 loss to McPherson College.
Offensively, the Warriors struggled in 2009. The offense ranked in the bottom half of the KCAC, only
scoring 20.3 points per game. The rushing game ranked second overall in the KCAC with 173.7 rushing yards per game, but passing offense ranked last in the KCAC with 118.9 passing yards per game.
A poor passing game handcuffed Sterling College all year long, putting a lot of pressure on the Warrior
defense to win games.
The Warrior defense stepped up to the challenge in 2009 by being the top defense in the KCAC. Sterling
College only allowed 17.3 points per game during the 2009 season, making up for the dismal offensive
performance.
Rashard Colquitt headlined the list of the Sterling College football players to receive All-KCAC Honors by
being named to the All-KCAC First Team Offense as a running back. Members of the All-KCAC Second
Team were Mike Danski as an offensive lineman and Austin Kingsbury as a linebacker. Warriors that
received All-KCAC Honorable Mention were Ray Smith (offensive line), Drew Lott (defensive back), Justin
Hejny (linebacker), Quinton Burgess (defensive line), and Mike Jones (defensive line).

Sterling College traveled to Peru, Nebraska to play Peru State,
winning the game by a score of 23-7.
The Warriors opened the season with a win in Winfield, Kansas
over Southwestern College, defeating the Moundbuilders 17-7 in a
closely contested game.
A slow start had the Warriors down at the end of the first quarter
0-7. Sterling was able to then score 23 unanswered points during
the second and third quarters, holding off Peru State for the victory.
Sterling led 10-7 going into halftime with the touchdown coming
from a Joey Garcia two yard run. In the second half, Clay McEachern was able to put the Warriors ahead by two scores by scoring a
touchdown on a 10 yard reception.
The strong running game of the Warriors was the key to the victory. Sterling was able to gain 211 yards on the ground led by
Joey Garcia’s 94 yards rushing. In comparison, Peru State was
only able to gain 110 yards rushing.
The Sterling College defense held strong in the fourth quarter,
bringing the victory home for the Warriors. Southwestern was
only able to gain a total of 133 yards rushing compared to the
Warriors’ 226 yards rushing.

The Warriors lost to Ottawa University 21-23 after Ottawa made
a strong comeback in the fourth quarter, making up a 14 point
deficit.
Good fortune was not in the Warriors’ deck as they traveled to
McPherson to play the Bulldogs. Sterling College lost to McPherson College in a 21-0 shutout
Sterling College took a 14 point lead into the fourth quarter after
a strong third quarter, only to be thwarted by the strong offensive
attack of Ottawa University.
McPherson scored 14 points against the Warriors in the second
quarter and never looked back.
The passing game appeared to be the difference in the game,
as Ottawa University was able to gain 356 yards in the air while
Sterling could only counter with 186 yards. Clay McEachern had a
strong receiving day for the Warriors, catching five passes for 88
yards.
The Warriors weren’t able to get anything going offensively as
they were hounded by the Bulldog defense all night. Turnovers
were a problem for the Warriors, who had four. As the Warrior
offense struggled, so did the defense. McPherson was able to
gain 425 yards of total offense against the regularly solid Warrior
defense.

Sterling College avoided being shut out for the second straight
game, but was unable to overcome Friends University, falling to
the Falcons 6-30
Tabor College could not handle the Warrior rushing attack as
Sterling College was able to pick up its third win of the season in
a 47-21 thrashing of the Bluejays in Sterling, Kansas.
The Warriors’ lone touchdown came in the third quarter on a four
yard reception by Clay McEachern.
The Warrior offensive attack flourished in the game, scoring on
the ground and in the air. Four rushing touchdowns and two passing touchdowns combined for six offensive touchdowns, the most
in the 2009 season.
Sterling struggled on both sides of the football for the second
straight week. Offensively, the Warriors were only able to gain
188 yards while giving up 434 yards on defense.

Sterling College triumphed over Kansas Wesleyan University by a
score of 28-17 in Sterling. The victory came on homecoming for
the Warriors.
On Halloween in Lindsborg, Kansas, the Sterling College Warriors
were scary good. Bethany College cowered under the Warrior
presence in the 35-2 victory for Sterling College.
The Warriors came out of the gates strong, scoring seven points in
the first quarter, but trailed at halftime 10-7. Fourteen unanswered points in the third quarter gave the Warriors the lead
which they held on to the rest of the way. A touchdown in the
fourth quarter sealed the homecoming victory.
The Warriors held a 7-0 lead going into halftime where Coach
Lambert must have given a wizardly speech because the second
half was magic for the Warriors. Sterling scored 28 points in the
second half, blistering the Swedes on their path to victory.
Kansas Wesleyan was unable to overcome the Warriors despite
having racked up 353 yards of total offense compared to 216 for
Sterling.

In their final home game of the season, the Warriors took care
of the Spires from the University of Saint Mary in a 26-14 win on
Senior Day.
Sterling came out and took the lead in the first quarter and never
relinquished that lead. At halftime, the Warriors were shutting
out Saint Mary 13-0. Saint Mary attacked in the third quarter,
cutting the lead by seven points for the fourth quarter. The Warriors survived Saint Mary’s comeback attempt by putting 13 more
points on the board in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory.
Defense and the ground game were the story again for the Warriors as they held Saint Mary to 260 yards of total offense while
gaining 292 yards on the ground.

North Newton, Kansas
The Warriors were disappointed in their final game of the 2009
season, traveling to North Newton to lose to Bethel College 0-30.
Bethel jumped on Sterling in the first quarter, scoring 14 points
and then added another 13 points in the third quarter. A fourth
quarter field goal, pushed the final score to 0-30. Sterling was
unable to get anything going offensively while the defense was
unable to keep the Threshers out of the endzone.
The running game that was the staple to the Sterling offense all
season failed to show up against Bethel. Sterling was only able
to gain one yard on the ground against a Bethel defense that
confused the Warriors throughout the game.

Sterling Facilities
SMISOR STADIUM
Smisor Stadium, the beneficiary of a 1.2 million dollar renovation in the summer of 2008 is
the home of the Sterling College Warrior football
program.
The renovation was made possible from a
lead gift from a former football alum as well
as the Sterling School district. With a seating
capacity of 3,000, Smisor is a great setting for
college football and a dominate landmark on the
Sterling College campus. Smisor Stadium also
houses the football conference room, football
locker room and Coaching Offices.
With the renovation, the pitch is now a perfectly crowned natural fescue/ bluegrass blend guaranteed to add to the aesthetics
of the facility.
An underground sprinkler system was also recently installed.
The irrigation project was made possible through lead gifts from
Anna Smisor-Smith and the Sterling Rotary.
A new commercial turf mower was also purchased through
fundraising efforts for the new grass and sprinklers allowing McCracken Field to be maintained at a professional quality.

PRESS BOX
The Smisor Stadium project also included a complete
renovation of the press box, which more than doubled its
size; there are four separate seating areas across the facility.
There are two main press areas that are capable of comfortable seating ten persons each, equipped with radio hookups
and wireless internet. Adjacent to each main press box are
coaching boxes. These boxes allow for the seating of six
coaches comfortably. Each box is equipped with temperature
regulation in addition to the stunning views of one of the finest natural turf fields in the state.
