Scott Antique Market in Atlanta
The Scott Antique Market at the Atlanta Expo Centers, the world’s largest monthly indoor
antique show, features two buildings stocked full of pretty much every antique imaginable. With
366,000 square feet to explore, and over 3,500 booths, plus outdoor shopping and even a courtyard of merchandise, it’s almost impossible to leave
without finding exactly what you’re looking for,
according to the show’s organizers. All things antique
wind up at the Scott Antique Market – antique furniture, vintage hardware, rare art, stunning glassware,
heirloom silver, incredible jewelry, and so much more.
The Scott Antique Market, described as
“America’s favorite treasure hunt,” always takes place
the second weekend of every month at the Atlanta
Expo Centers which straddle I-285 at Exit 55. Parking
is free; admission is only $5; and a complimentary shuttle goes between both buildings. Show
hours are Thursdays 12:45-6pm, Fridays & Saturdays 9am-6pm, and Sundays 10am-4pm.

The Civil War in Sandy Springs Exhibit
and Stars and Stripes Celebration
The Civil War in Sandy Springs exhibit will be on view at the
Heritage Sandy Springs Museum through April 1, 2015, and is
free, made possible by the Frances and Beverly Dubose
Foundation. The story of occupied Sandy Springs is significant to
the major turning point for the Civil War. The exhibit includes rare
artifacts and previously unpublished accounts of the occupation
of Sandy Springs by firsthand witnesses. It tells the story of the
people of this small farming community who lived through the
invasion and occupation and the effects these courses of events
had on their lives. The museum is open Wednesdays and
Saturdays, 11am-2pm and by appointment. For more information,
call 404-851-9111 Ext. 2, or visit www.heritagesandysprings.org.
Join the City of Sandy Springs for the Stars and Stripes Celebration on Saturday, July 5, at
the Concourse Corporate Center. Enjoy food, fun, and an incredible fireworks display. Go to

Chattahoochee River Summer Splash
The coolest way to escape the heat this summer will be at the 7th Annual Summer Splash at
the Chattahoochee River on Saturday, July 26. Guests are invited to bring
their kayak, canoe, or raft, or rent one from the local outfitters. The six
mile float will last about three hours, depending upon the river’s current
and amount of paddling.
The Chattahoochee River National Recreation Area and Sandy
Springs Hospitality & Tourism will host this signature event and have
teamed up with Cooper Global Transportation and the City of Sandy
Springs. Make sure you register early for the event to ensure your spot
on the river.
After the float there will be music, food, and fun waiting for everyone
to enjoy at Powers Island. Parking for Summer Splash is at Powers
Island, and a shuttle will transport participants to Morgan Falls to begin
the float. Register for the Summer Splash by calling the Chattahoochee
River National Recreation Area (CRNRA) at 678 538-1200 or visiting www.nps.gov/chat.

Blue Ridge Scenic Railway
All Aboard for a trip that will spark kids’ imaginations, adults’ memories, and leave everyone
smiling. It all starts at the historic 100+ year-old depot in downtown Blue Ridge, Georgia and
heads north from there. As the train winds through the mountains alongside the beautiful Toccoa
River, Car Hosts will share the history of the railroad
and sights along the way. The views are spectacular
from both the vintage climate-controlled coaches and
from the open-air car. Need a snack? Visit the
Concession car for snacks, drinks, and souvenirs.
After a leisurely one-hour trip, the train stops in the
unique twin border towns of McCaysville, Georgia
and Copperhill, Tennessee. You will have time to
shop, tour, and dine during the layover (varying from 1.5 hours to 2 hours depending on specific trip). Then it’s back to Blue Ridge. No trip is complete without making a stop at the Gift Shop.
The ticket office is in the 100-year-old depot tucked in the charming mountain village of Blue
Ridge, Georgia within the lush Chattahoochee National Forest, only 95 miles north of Atlanta.
Reservations are strongly encouraged. For schedules, ticket prices, and information, call 877413-8724 or 706-632- 8724 or visit www.brscenic.com.

gia on My Mind
The National Civil War Naval Museum in Columbus
Discover the little known stories of sailors, soldiers, and civilians, both free and enslaved, as
affected by the Navies of the American Civil War through award-winning exhibits including the
largest surviving Civil War ironclad, the CSS Jackson.
Explore unique artifacts, ship replicas, and a great gift shop
for history lovers. Special events are held year-round.
During June visitors can see an original documentary
produced by the National Civil War Naval Museum about
the USS Water Witch. On July 12 the museum theater
piece Medical Mysteries will feature stories of doctors and
nurses serving in the Civil War navies as well as a dramatization of the autopsy of John Wilkes Booth aboard the
USS Montauk. The 150th Anniversary of the Battle of
Mobile Bay will be Aug. 1-3, and visitors can see a webcast of it at the museum in Columbus.
The museum is open Sun.-Mon. 12:30pm-4:30pm and Tues.-Sat. 10am-4:30pm and is
located at 1002 Victory Drive, Columbus. For more information, call 706-327-9798 or visit
www.portcolumbus.org.
Summer Beach Bash in Douglas
Get ready to cool off this summer with the annual Summer Beach Bash on June 3 in
Douglas. The Beach Bash will be held from 4-9pm in the vacant lot adjacent to City Hall on 441S
in downtown Douglas. With activities planned for all ages, this
is sure to be the best Beach Party – away from the beach!
Outdoor vendors will include food, novelty, inflatables, and
more specialty merchandise. Kids will enjoy large waterslides,
Treasure Island sand pit, bouncy house, face painting, watermelon eating contest, sandcastle building contest, and “Strait
Jacket” the monster truck. Does it sound like the kids will have
all the fun? Don’t worry, adult activities will include a Battle of
the Sexes, Hoola Hoopin’, Street Dance with a DJ, and more.
Visit Douglas for giant waterslides, food, and fun – what
else could a Parrot Head ask for? For more information,

The Hiawassee River Railroad
Ride the historic Hiwassee River Railroad scenic rail
excursion through the unspoiled Cherokee National Forest,
along the beautiful Hiwassee River, and through the secluded Hiwassee River Gorge. All trips feature the engineering
marvel, the Great Hiwassee Loop. At the top you’ll pass
over a bridge 62 feet above the tracks on which you’ve just
traveled as the rails negotiate a spiraling formation.
All trips begin with a short bus trip from the the restored
L&N Depot & Museum in Etowah, Tennessee. For those
riders choosing a trip to Copperhill, the route continues beyond Farmer through Turtletown and
Ducktown to the border towns of Copperhill, Tennessee and McCaysville, Georgia.
The trains feature comfortable coach seating with large viewing windows for standard service. Dome seating allows passengers a panoramic view from high above the car. Observation
lounge seating provides a unique view from the car at the rear of the train in one direction. While
traveling in the other direction, the car will be directly behind the locomotive. Passengers
selecting this option will ride one way in dome seating and the other in observation seating.
Special rates are available for groups of 25 or more; charter trips can be arranged for groups
of 80 or more. For information, phone 423-894-8028, x0 or visit www.tvrail.com.
