Knights clinch conference title on senior night

For the second year in a
row, the Arthur-Lovington
Knights have clinched the
LOVC title. Friday night’s
81-35 dismantling of Martinsville had to wait to see
whether conference foe Shiloh could defeat Heritage,
as both the Raiders and the
Knights were tied for the
conference title heading
into Friday’s contests. Shiloh fell 55-49.
But this year’s accomplishment rang with a little
more impressiveness as two
of Arthur-Lovington’s three
seniors were sidelined due
to injury. Evan Seegmiller
was sidelined following a
hemotoma that developed
on his hip while Nick Martina was on the mend following an ankle sprang.
“It felt pretty good, to
know that even without us
they can still get the job
done,” said Seegmiller, who
warmed up with the team
before the game but was in
too much pain to play.
“It’s a good team win, by
40,” added Martina.
And a team effort it was.
The Knights had 13 different scorers.
“We’ve had a deep team
all year,” said head coach
Dale Schuring. “We’ve had
some guys with injuries before or sickness, where guys
have had to step up. When
you have that, it’s a nice luxury to have and we certainly
do.”
The Knights quickly got
out to a 22-9 lead in the
first and held steady in
the second, going into the
locker-room up 30-16. Despite the lead, Schuring
wasn’t overly pleased with
his team’s first half performance.
“We were very passive
offensively in the first half,
and we were missing shots.
If we make those shots, we
look great, but we weren’t
aggressive. We were just
passing the ball and shooting 3’s and not trying to attack them.”
No worries for Schuring, though, as his Knights
came out and scored almost
as many points in the third
as they had the entire first
half with 27, increasing
their lead by 31. The offen-

sive effort was on the heels
of an 11-0 run, which further
developed into Arthur-Lovington outscoring Martinsville 19-2. The Knights’ Curtis Plank dealt the majority
of the quarter’s points with
14; he would finish the game
with 21 points while Maxwell and Jeremy Plank each
had six in the third.
“That run, whether it was
fast breaks or otherwise, we
were attacking more and being more aggressive,” said
Schuring. “I think that’s the
difference. The other thing
is we sped them up and got
some other people to take
some shots. Mulkins missed
a few more shots in that situation where we could build
on that lead.”
The Martinsville forward
Zach Mulkins did most of the
work for the Blue Streaks,
scoring 26. His game high
performance wasn’t enough
to outdo Arthur-Lovington’s
three double digit scorers,
Curtis Plank, Maxwell, and
Jeremy Plank. The Knights
kept pace in the fourth, scoring 24 to Martinsville’s nine
to lock up the win and conference title.
“It was just exciting,” said
Maxwell of the win. “Last
game. You have to come out
and show up like we did.”
“Obviously, we would
have liked to have played a
better first half and certainly would have liked to have
given the three seniors a
chance to finish their high

school careers here,” said

different outcome,” said
Seegmiller about the potential matchup. “We didn’t
come ready to play that
week. We’re coming out, everything we got. They better
be prepared.”
“We’re not looking past
Atwood and certainly not
saying Arcola isn’t in there
either,” said Schuring. “It’s
a matchup, and they did
beat us this year, so it would
be a nice situation to get to
play them again and maybe
rectify that, but at this point

The Knights’ focus now
switches to the post-season,
and as a team completely
comprised of those who took
the unexpected trip to sectionals last year, expectations are high. The Knights
enter the Arcola regional as
the No. 2 seed, behind Central A&M and just in front of
Okaw Valley, a rival that the
Knights upset in last year’s
regional semifinal but fell
to earlier this year, 70-62.
The Knights will first face
No. 7 seed Atwood-Hammond whom they defeated
58-37 on January 15. With
a win against the Rajahs
Wednesday night and an OV
win over No. 6 seed Arcola
the same evening, a heated
rematch would be set for
Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
