Our 1st term is very quickly speeding to an end and the teachers are
finalizing their marks for the term.
The cricket league matches have come to an end and today is the
highlight of the swimming season when our A and B
teams participate in the Inter-school galas. We wish
every swimmer a successful race. May all your hard
work bear fruit.
A reminder to all Grade 5‟s that the due date for the final
payment of your tour fee is Wednesday, 13 March 2013.
The Annual General Meeting of the School Governing Body will be
held on Monday, 11 March 2013 and all parents should attend to
receive the report on the Audited Financial Statements of 2012 as
well as the Chairman‟s and Principal‟s reports.
I have included an article on „How To Build Your Child‟s Self Esteem‟ as
this is such an important topic and if your child has a good self esteem
he/she can face anything in life. Invest in your child‟s future and build
his/her self esteem.

FOUR TIPS TO BUILDING SELF ESTEEM IN CHILDREN

Parents want their child to have good self-esteem. However, self-esteem doesn‟t come
naturally to children. It is something that must be fostered, developed, nurtured and grown.
Following these four tips can help.
1. Show them you value them
Let your children know you love them. This is done through praise and through
direct expressions of love, hugs, and kisses. Children need to be told
directly by their parents or caregiver that they are loved. Children need to be
held, cuddled, and played with. Quality and quantity of time demonstrate
valuing. Few things speak more to being valued, than just being there.
2. Teach them and let them learn
Competency is the next ingredient to healthy self-esteem. As the child grows and begins exploring
the house (often the kitchen cupboards) the child gains the opportunity to increase competency
with access and control of larger objects over greater spaces. Again the response of the parent is
crucial. Some parents structure the child‟s environment for maximum exploration while other
parents localize their child‟s area of living. Either way, making way for the child to play and explore
safely, whatever the limits, is often referred to as “baby proofing”. The greater the control and
mastery of skills a child develops the greater the sense of competency – the second ingredient to
healthy self-esteem.
Parents can facilitate competency by providing safe areas for children
to develop skills and by allowing their children to participate in
household activities such as cooking, cleaning, laundry, making beds, etc.
The goal of these activities is for the child to develop a sense of control – not
the perfectionist pursuit of the best made bed, etc. Participation should be
fun, supportive or helpful.
3. Participate in doing good deeds
The third thing parents can do to facilitate healthy self-esteem in their children is to direct and
participate with their children in the doing of good deeds. Doing good deeds teaches children to
be aware of the life of others beyond themselves. This enables the development
of empathy and altruistic behaviour. What‟s important is that children are
encouraged or even positioned to be helpful to the extent of their ability. The little
one may carry a plastic cup to the table, the middle one a plate and a spoon, while
the big one can clear. Special little projects can be undertaken, visits can be made,
and pennies can be put in the charity coin boxes at the check-out counter.

4. Make the rules of life clear
The last thing parents can provide to facilitate self-esteem in their children is structure. Structure is
a word that actually implies two separate concepts: routines and limits. Routines provide
structure over time and limits provide structure over behaviour.
Another way to think of structure is like the rules of a game. How well could you play Monopoly,
Hop Scotch, Tag, or Hide and Go Seek, if there weren‟t rules? Rules include who goes next, under
which circumstances, and when. The rules also include what happens when someone goes
outside the normal bounds of play – miss a turn, pay a fine, etc.

Knowing the rules of the game of life is sometimes referred to as internalising structure.
This too is also a form of competency – when the child knows the how‟s, what‟s, when‟s, and
where‟s, of life. Unfortunately this information doesn‟t come automatically. Children may pick some
of the rules up incidentally as they go along, but this leaves much to chance. Parents can help
their children internalise structure by commenting on daily routines, specifying appropriate
behaviour, providing feedback and by providing consequences for undesirable behaviour.
These four ingredients, valuing, competency, good deeds, and structure form the basic
building blocks for the development of self-esteem. And why develop self-esteem in children?
Children with healthy self-esteem feel good about themselves, relate well to others,
behave more appropriately and are more aware of the world around them.

FLU VACCINATIONS
Thank you to everyone who returned the money and consent forms. Flu Vaccinations
will take place at the school on Monday, 11 March 2013.
REQUESTING MAGAZINES
HOUSE T-SHIRTS
We are requesting donations of magazines
(old or new) for Jelly Beanz. Please ensure
that the magazines donated are appropriate
for children.
A decision was reached
that the T-Shirt for each
House (Lions, Leopards,
Cheetahs,
Pumas and
Tigers) will be issued to
each learner in 2014 and will
be included in 2014‟s
budget. The first T-Shirt will
be issued by the school and
parents can purchase more
thereafter. More information
will be communicated at a
later date.
Jelly Beanz Inc was founded in 2010 with the
vision of making therapeutic services
accessible to all South African children so
that the host of negative outcomes
associated with untreated trauma.
The magazines will be used for collages and
theme discussions.

Horizon Maths Competition : First Round - 12 March 2013
This competition is hosted by the Moonlight International School. It encourages our
learners to work outside the curriculum and widen their knowledge of Maths. All
Grade 5 – 7 learners will be participating. Please encourage your child to study.
Past year papers are also available on the Horizon Maths Competition website
http://www.hmc.org.za. Learners receiving 50% and higher in the first round
will proceed to the 2nd round. This will be held on Saturday, 11 May at Moonlight
International School.

GOLF DAY
Golf Day is coming soon... 6 September 2013...
PA TEDDY STORY EVENING
The performance includes poetry, singing, storytelling, a ventriloquist puppet called “CHARLIE” and
a puppet show.
Grade R – 4 Boys and girls are invited to come along on the respective
evenings. Wear your pyjamas and slippers to the show and don‟t forget
to bring your Teddy or soft toy to cuddle and a pillow/blanket to sit on.
At the end of the evening each child is provided with a cup of hot
chocolate and a cookie.
This is a great adventure, especially for Grade R‟s and 1‟s, as this is their first real school outing.
We still require donations of tins of hot chocolate, box milk and biscuits. If any parent, or your
company, is willing to donate, please contact Mr. Andrew Dinwoodie 082 927 2054 or the school for
further details and information. Anything (big or small) would be appreciated!!!
The PA would require a few Grade R, 1, 2 and 3 parents to help out with door duties, selling of
tickets on the day and helping to make and serve the hot chocolate on the two nights.
Grade R, 1 and 2 on Tuesday, 12 March at 18:00
and
Grade 3 and 4 on Wednesday, 13 March at 18:00.
Please support this event. Parking available on the field.
Cost is R10 per child includes hot chocolate and biscuits
served after the show.
Parents free ONLY if wearing pyjamas!
Parents not in pyjamas must please pay R10
Parents and siblings (younger or older) welcome too!
( Moms and Dads we dare you to wear pyjamas! )
GO-KART DAY (aka AUTUMN FAIR): 11 MAY 2013
Although the Go-Kart Day is only scheduled for May, the PA have started to prepare furiously for our
Annual Festival. Each week we will communicate snippets regarding Go-Kart Day and what we
require to ensure that the day is fun-filled and runs smoothly.
Parents who are willing to help in any way (i.e. donations, time, brain-storming) must please attend
the PA meetings. The next meeting will be on Wednesday, 10 April 2013, at 18:30 in the staff room.

WINTER SPORTS DAY
Our Annual Winter Sports Day will take place
on Friday, 15 March 2013 from approx 14:00
to 17:00.
This event is a fun-filled afternoon where
schools around Pretoria are invited to
compete against each other in the following
sport codes:
Chess: 1 mixed team - 4 players
(2 x Gr. 1 - 3 and 2 x Gr. 4 - 7)
Netball: Open A and Under 11 A
Soccer: Under 13 A and Under 11 A
(7-a-side)
Tennis: 1 Open mixed doubles pair
(one boy and one girl)
Your child should have received a
letter from the Educator in Charge of
the respective sport code informing you if
he/she has been selected to play on the day.
Spectators are more than welcome to attend.
SNR HOCKEY PRE-SEASON MEETING
A very important pre-season hockey meeting
is scheduled for Thursday, 14 March
2013 at 18:30 in the staffroom. We
urge all parents whose child is playing
Senior Hockey (U/12 and U/13) next
term to attend this meeting.
U/10 NETBALL TEAM
This season started with only a few girls but
soon word spread and more girls joined. We
now have 34 girls practicing. Mrs de Waal will
attend a coaching and umpiring course to
ensure the girls get the best coaching and Ms
Sigauque is keeping them fit and warmed up.
We are looking forward to a very successful
u/10 Netball season.
REMINDERS
There is no more Cricket practice for the
remainder of the Term as the Cricket season
has come to an end. All matches have been
played.
The last gala took place on Thursday, 7 March
2013. There will be no more swimming practice,
morning or afternoon. (Parents must not confuse
this with the Swimming Academy)

SENIOR TABLE TENNIS
This activity is very popular
amongst the Grade 4 – 7
pupils. There have been on
average 35 – 40 children
each week for table tennis.
At first we only had ONE table to utilize and it
was quite a challenge to accommodate the 40
children who arrived on the first Thursday
afternoon. We, however, made a few quick
plans and a good time was had by all. The
enthusiasm displayed by the children is most
infectious and the willingness to share is
wonderful. We now have 3 tables to use and
things are much easier. I would like to
commend Jade Pretorius in Grade 7N and
Jasmin Naidu in Grade 7V for their outstanding
skills in teaching the Grade 4‟s and the Grade
5‟s who have never played before. Jade has
been a wonderful role model to these children
and her patience and constant encouragement
is wonderful. We would also like to express our
thanks to the boys who “always” assembled the
tables and then packed them away. Well
Done!!! You are all STARS!
All our u/10 girls have the opportunity to be
part of our Netball teams who are being
coached by Mrs de Waal and Ms Sigauque.
