did you know more than 4,000 people in
this 10-parish area heard the words “you have
cancer” in 2011? Cancer Services of Greater Baton
Rouge was here for them, their family members
and caregivers. We are the only community-based
agency that does what we do, and for more than 50
years cancer patients have relied on what Cancer
Services offers.
In this 2011 Annual Report, we’d like for you to
explore with us a few “What if?” questions.
• What if you or someone you love is among the
4,000 that will hear those words in 2012?
• What if Cancer Services wasn’t here for you?
• What if we could do more? Because there is so
much more to be done.
We are blessed to be a community with fantastic
treatment options, yet when the insurance
companies and doctors step aside, Cancer Services
steps in with relevant and meaningful educational,
financial and emotional support.

Because You Never Know.

For most of my lifetime, cancer was a
disease that impacted other people. There was no history
of cancer in my family, so I developed a false sense of
security that I would go through life not having to deal
with it personally. That all came to an end in 2007
when we lost my sister-in-law, Lena, after her two-year
battle with breast cancer. It was an even greater shock
when only a year after Lena’s death, my wife of 29 years,
Amber, was diagnosed with stage IV lung cancer. Amber
fought the good fight but passed away less than a year
later. Impossibly, last year my doctors informed me that I
had prostate cancer. My first thought was, “I can’t believe
this is happening again!” Fortunately, because of early
detection and a successful operation, I am pleased to
report that I am cancer free and enjoying life again.
So why do I share my story with you? You never know
when cancer will strike you, a family member, a friend or
a colleague.
The common thread that weaves through each of my
own family experiences with cancer is the phenomenal
support provided by Cancer Services. This is a great
organization that can provide aid in the form of
information, financial assistance and resource support.
I’m deeply indebted to them for providing me with
resources to help Amber while she fought for her life.
While I hope and pray you never need Cancer
Services, Cancer Services very much needs you! We
know there’s more to be done. The 2011 statistics are
compelling. Let’s make sure we support Cancer Services
and its ever growing client need.

This year, Cancer Services hosted its first Cancer 101 series.
Presented by local oncology professionals, the community
was invited to hear them speak and answer questions. In
partnership with LPB, the four-part series was filmed, aired on
their Newsmakers show and is available on the LPB website.

of survivors in any
stage of treatment. In
partnership with BREC
and The Red Shoes,
our three exercise
classes: Fit and Fearless, Yoga, and Zumba
Gold, meet multiple
times a week enabling
clients to exercise at a
comfortable level and
engage with fellow
survivors.
DIRECT
ASSISTANCE
All of our services are free of charge.
Providing our clients with nutritional supplement free-of-charge
helps replenish much-needed
vitamins and nutrients they have
lost due to the side effects of
treatment.

WELL-BEING
Reiki (pronounced ray-key) is a
Japanese term meaning “universal
life energy.” Not used to diagnose
or treat specific illnesses, Reiki promotes relaxation to decrease stress
and anxiety and increase overall
health and well-being. People
seeking relief from disease-related
symptoms and the side effects of
conventional medical treatments,
such as radiation or chemotherapy,
may find Reiki beneficial.

confidence that I can respond appropriately
to any situation I may encounter. Reiki
helps me ‘be’ and accept, with hope, where
I am in my treatment process.”

In 2011, we provided more than 600
clients mobility and independence
through the loan of hospital beds,
wheelchairs and other equipment.
Cancer Services gave more than
$400,000 to help relieve the
financial burden of a diagnosis
through prescription assistance and
mileage reimbursement to cancer
patients in need.
The La Capitale Chapter of Links
Inc. hosted the Wigs, Martinis and
Bowties event where more than 150
wigs were collected and donated
to Cancer Services to help restore
confidence and self-esteem for our
clients.

At Cancer Services of Greater Baton Rouge, our
network of services, partnerships, clients and friends is far-reaching. With our two
programs, Direct Assistance and Support, our clients can choose the services that
best fit their unique needs to make their cancer care complete. For some, it’s our
financial assistance to help deal with the high cost of a cancer diagnosis, for others
it’s a support group filled with caring and empathetic ears, for still others it’s a library
to help empower them with information as they go on their cancer journey.

PROGRAM
Our Children’s Program helps the entire
family. The events not only let kids laugh,
play and experience childhood outside
of cancer, but also give families a chance
to spend precious time together and
connect with others who can empathize.

Independent Sector, this saved
the agency more than $145,000.

In 2011, the 17th annual Camp Care was our biggest yet! More than
50 children with cancer and their siblings attended the week-long
day camp in July. With the help of an on-site nurse and dozens of
volunteers, our campers enjoyed fishing, bowling, laser tag, movies
and so much more.
