Not too long ago, apple cider vinegar has been credited with
curing everything from the flu to warts. Many of its benefits
are unproven, but some experts think that adding a little of this
sour liquid to your life may indeed have some health benefits.
Apple cider vinegar is a fermented liquid made from apples.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Weight Loss
A study to test if apple cider vinegar will assist in weight loss
was done in Japan. In the study, 175 obese but healthy people
took either vinegar or water daily for 12 weeks. Their diets
were similar and they kept food journals. At the end of the
study, those who used vinegar had lost slightly more weight.
On average, the vinegar group lost ½ - 1 kg over the 3-month
period. The researchers suggest that the vinegar may turn on
certain genes involved in breaking down fats.

Dilute 1 to 2 tablespoons in a big glass of water, and sip it
along with your meals.

Make a salad dressing with apple cider vinegar. Use 2
tbsp. (30ml) of apple cider vinegar and mix the vinegar
with fresh herbs e.g. basil or oreganum, lemon juice and a
clove of garlic in a food processor.
Apple Cider Vinegar and Blood Sugar
Furthermore, apple cider vinegar does appear to help with
blood sugar control.
Apple cider vinegar has an anti-glycemic effect and blocks
some of the digestion of starch.
However, if you are on medication for diabetes, you shouldn't
stop taking it and substitute vinegar.
Tips on Taking Apple Cider Vinegar
Don't drink apple cider vinegar straight - the acidity could
harm your tooth enamel.


“Joining the Slender Wonder Team was one of the best
decisions I could have ever made. In 2014 I was
welcomed into a small, but efficient family that has high
working standards.
Changing your career isn't easy as everything is new
and you are challenged like myself to step up and be
open to the evolving world. At first I couldn't believe that
it takes only handful of people to deal with so many daily
tasks and then still execute them so well.
I would like to thank our director Riaan Jacobs, he is
truly someone I look up to. He is kind hearted toward
his employees. Thank you for all your guidance and
knowledge you impart unto us. Bernice, you are our
office “Mamma”, Bernice takes charge of everything
with such ease, your work ethics and high standards
truly inspire me to do better.
I am truly blessed to have joined a team with high
standards who enjoy what they do and who I spend
most of my day to day time with. I smile as I am truly
happy where I find myself.
Slender Wonder – a team and a family!
I started off doing small office tasks for the director like
letters to our Doctors, providing information to new

October, I had lost 40kg and felt very satisfied with myself
but very slowly started gaining, as I got a bit slack. Before
the December holiday I weighed 75.4kg. And then came
December, and I got totally into the holiday spirit and went
a little bit overboard in the process.
In January this year I went back to doctor Sharon, and I
I have been on Slender Wonder for thirteen months & I
have lost 75 kilograms my start weight was 231kg's
and I am now 156kg's. I also started used to wear a 9
XL shirt and I am now down to a 4 XL.
My pants size used to be a 62 and now I fit in a size 46
and I am still going strong. Slender Wonder truly
changed my life not only in the way I perceive life but
also the way I live my life, I see things differently, I enjoy
my life thoroughly. There is no more bondage, I always
say: obesity is a bondage.
My daughter was born during my Slender Wonder
journey and she is three months old already and by the
time she is old enough to look at photos she will not
believe that “the man” in the photo was her dad.
I will continue to live a healthy lifestyle and with the
support of Slender Wonder I will make it happen and
lead a strong and healthy life for myself as well as my
family.
I believe Slender Wonder is the best lifestyle

had picked up 3.2kg. She suggested that I go back on to
Simeon B straight away.
I then had the privilege to attend the Slender Wonder
Parklands Life Hospital Challenge Launch and this was
just what I needed to get me fired up again. As I listened
to doctor Sharon's presentation, I just realized anew that
this is a winning formula and that I had to get back on track
and soon.
I decided to set myself a new goal. I want to weigh 65
kilograms. That makes it approximately 1 kilogram per
week for the next 13 weeks. I am going to do everything in
my power to get to this goal of 65 kilograms – then I can
start the process of maintaining it for the rest of my life.
Since I have lost all this weight, I am much more active
than before. I do regular exercise, i.e. step-aerobics,
walking, rebounding and free weights. I participated in
the Johnson Crane Fun Run – my first ever race, which I
found extremely liberating. I could join other people, and
wear ski-pants, without having to cover myself in a sheet
because I felt too ashamed to appear in public. I could
even keep up with my husband, which has never been the
case before. We have now joined the Ebotse Park Run
for the weekly 5km walk/run on Saturday mornings and I
am slowly going to try and move on to bigger events. But
baby steps first.
I am extremely motivated at the moment, and very
determined to make a success of this new goal. Slender
Wonder has made such a big difference in my life, and I
cannot stress enough just how well it works, provided you
follow the guidelines and rules.
To me this is the Ultimate Weight Loss Programme.

Buying in bulk
It can be a big temptation to choose a supersize bag of
something at the supermarket just because it is “on
special” or to “save money” or to keep it for “guests” or
“special occasions”, right?
It is almost impossible to resist the temptation to take a
handful here and there. Stick to buying when, what and in
the quantities you need, when you are on a weight loss
diet.

Shopping on an empty stomach
Finding time to do grocery shopping can be challenging
and tempting –but do yourself a favour and have a piece
of fruit as part of you snack and daily allowance before
you enter the shop. Alternatively do shopping after an
actual meal or ask someone else to do the shopping. If
you shop on an empty stomach, blood glucose is likely to
be low and it will be more difficult to stay focused.

You are more likely to purchase things you do not need if
you do not have a shopping list. The noise, colours,
samples and smells all take your attention away from the

What is Pyruvate?

South Africans love their fast-food, so much so that we’ve eaten
our way to becoming one of the most obese nations in the
world.The Lancet issued research by the Global Burden of
Disease in 2014 listing the obesity ratings of 188 countries
across the globe – and South Africa ranked highly, as one of the
most obese nations.
Fast food, fatty meals
One of the most commonly cited reasons for South African’s
growing obesity problem is the ‘westernisation’ and urbanisation
of the population. Fast-paced urban lifestyles don’t leave much
room for physical activity, and increasingly put people into
contact with fast-food, which often carries high fat, sugar and salt
content. While bodies vary, based on normal BMI the average
man should ingest around 2,400 Calories (or kilocalories) a day,
and the average woman around 2,000 Calories. These meals
listed below are the most fattening items from a number of
popular South African fast-food chains which, in some cases,
could fill the recommended daily intake (RDI) quota in one meal.
According to the research report, 38.8% of all men over the age
of 20 are considered overweight and obese – of these, 13.5%
are categorised as obese. For women, the figures are even
worse – with 69.3% of women over the age of 20 considered
overweight and obese, of which 42% obese. While these are not
the highest stats in the world (an ‘honour’ which belongs to
nations such as the USA, and Mexico) this does make South
Africa by far the fattest country in Sub-Saharan Africa.

Apple Crumpets

1 Egg, plus the white of another egg

2 Crackerbread

10 ml (2 tsp) sweetener

100g Apple

A Pinch of salt

½ tsp Cinnamon
Make apple mousse by peeling and coring the apple.
Microwave on "high” for 5 minutes in a little water or on the
stove top in a pot – but this option takes a little bit longer.

Mash the apple until it looks like Purity.

Crumb the crackerbread.

Beat the egg, salt and sweetener together.

Add the Crackerbread crumbs.


Savoury Rice

I took cauliflower, chopped it up in the food processor,
placed it in a big sieve and placed it over boiling water,
steaming it until done.

In the meantime I chopped up some tomato, onion and
baby marrow very finely (for some colour) and fried it in a
pan sprayed with spray & cook .

I then mixed the cauliflower with the veggies and added a
little bit of the marinade just for a bit of extra flavour. I
grilled the prawns in the airfryer for two and a half minutes
on 200˚ and voila! "Slender Wonder Grilled Prawns on a
bed of Savoury Rice".

Curry and Rice
Yoghurt “Milktart”

100g mince

175ml fat-free plain yoghurt

20g chopped onion

1 crushed crackerbread as thickening agent
1 Provita (roughtly crumbed)

Half a teaspoon of curry powder (Cartwrights)

2 Sachets sweetener


Half a teaspoon of sweetener

Half a teaspoon cinnamon

1 tbsp of vinegar

1 bay leaf

Half a clove of garlic - crushed

Salt and pepper to taste. (If you like, you can add some
herbs according to your taste.

Brown the chopped onion in a frying pan, sprayed with
spray and cook.


Add the mince and fry until brown.
Mix curry powder, sweetener, vinegar, garlic salt, pepper
and herbs together in a cup.

Add to the mince.

Add the bay leaf and crackerbread.

Add a little water and simmer until the desired
consistency is achieved and serve on a bed of cauliflower.

The cauliflower is not quite the same as rice, but it is
totally acceptable and it has the look, and remember, you
eat with your eyes as well!

In this edition of Slender Success our doctor in the spotlight is Dr Gerda Scholtz. Dr
Scholtz practices at the NHC Clinic in Honeydew however she was born in Cape Town,
but grew up in the Free- State where she went to Medical School. After working in
Windsor in the UK and living in Edinburgh, Scotland, they settled in Johannesburg where
she commenced with General Medical Practice, as well as Slender Wonder. She has been
doing Slender Wonder for 18 years of which the last 2 years were full time. She says :" I
am blessed with a great husband, Danie and a precious, talented daughter, Lize-li.
Who are your current success stories?
There are so many wonderful stories, but I'll name a
few of the present success stories:
Pat Pieterse, 50 years old with Diabetes and high
cholesterol, has managed to stop one of her Diabetic
treatments and have halved the dose of the remainder.

has lost almost 29 kilograms.

Why did you decide to become a Slender Wonder
doctor?
I come from a genetic background of Diabetes and
heart disease and was also looking for a medical way
for my own patients to lose weight. Since Slender
Wonder is a medical weight loss programme, reliable
and always staying up to date with the latest research
(our medical director travelled to the USA again last
year and brought back all the latest information), I felt
comfortable enough to introduce it into my practice.
After 18 years, I can honestly say that I am still

Twice in a row I was awarded the "Slender Wonder Top
Doctor's Award" due to my wonderful and successful
patients as well as Gail Miller, my very capable practice
manager.
Do you specialise in any other medical fields?
I have been in general medical practice for 16 years but
because there is such a big need, that I am now full
time involved in Slender Wonder. Overweight and
related problems are taking over at a rapid speed and
we are fast becoming one of the most obese countries
in the world. I have a female colleague attending to my
medical practice's patients on a full time basis.
What are your hobbies?
I love running, I do fencing, latin and ball Room dancing.
We also love travelling. As a family, we try to stay active
and when we travel, we always try and participate in
local races and events, e.g. a race in Hawaii last year
and in Dubai in January. I also have a saxophone, but
that is now starting to collect dust, I am ashamed to
confess!
What advice do you have for new patients
considering the Slender Wonder programme?
Do not postpone! Make that booking! Just know that
there are many others out there in exactly the same
boat. The sooner you start, the sooner you will reach
goal. Most patients express the regret of not starting
earlier.
You cannot have something different, if you are not
prepared to do something different. God gave you a
wonderful body, but He gave it to you once. What you
do with it, will determine how you grow old. There are
no spare parts for it. Health is precious. It gives quality
of life. You cannot control a lot of things, but you can
control what you put into your mouth.
