LUMINOUS CAIRNS
26 AUGUST – 3 SEPTEMBER
Peter Solness is a pioneer of light-painting and is regarded as
Australia’s foremost practitioner of this unique style of
photography.
During his residency with Cairns Festival,
Peter will conduct five of his famous
Field of Orbs events in locations around
Cairns. Volunteer ‘Orbsters’ spin specially
designed lanterns around their bodies,
creating trails of light to be captured
in spectacular photographs. Amateur
photographers are welcome to bring their
own cameras and make their own light
paintings. And you can learn much more
about Peter’s techniques in a practical
workshop.
To find out details about each of the
five events and join in as an ‘Orbster’,

WORKSHOP
SCULPTURE
BOTANICA
SATURDAY 17 SEPTEMBER
SATURDAY 17 SEPTEMBER
One of Cairns’ most loved musical exports, singer songwriter
Emma Louise, is returning home to share songs from her new
album, Supercry.
Join Kim Prentice at a workshop in the Botanic Gardens Visitor
Centre from 9.30am - 3.00pm.
A stunning debut EP, Full Hearts and
Empty Rooms (2011), announced Emma
Louise on the national stage as a rare
kind of talent, one who creates songs
with a resonance far beyond the instant
sugar hit of so much pop music. Once
you hear tunes as intensely evocative as
Illuminate, from the new album, or Jungle
from Full Hearts, you don’t forget them.
Writing songs is as natural as breathing
to Emma Louise, and right from the start
as a schoolgirl in Cairns it was the
quality of those songs that seemed to
make her path into a musical career
inevitable. If you know Emma’s music,
you will understand the emotional
storms her songs evoke and on Supercry
she stays true to her practice and holds
nothing back; all the aches and desires
of a gifted songwriter moving into
adulthood are laid bare.
This event, a partnership between the
Friends of the Botanic Gardens and
Saltwater Creek Basketry group, is
funded by RADF – the Regional Arts
Development Fund.

between the Queensland Government and Cairns Regional
council to support local arts and culture in regional Queensland
