A mission for our future: what do we believe God is calling us to do? Our core purpose ~
❖ To be a progressive Christian presence n the city of Boston, a reflection of Swedenborgian theology of service
and mission, through our commitment to education, social justice, and human rights and the faithful
stewardship of our financial resources.
❖ To make a difference in the lives of strangers and seekers through our compassion and acceptance by
transforming them into members of our community who share our common values.
❖ To be a “rock” of stability and support in an uncertain world - a tranquil and peaceful “home away from home”,
where you are missed when you are absent, and where you can find comfort, healing, strength, hope, and
constancy when things aren’t going well.
Therefore, we covenant to ~
❖ Show the love, compassion, acceptance, and forgiveness in our common life;
❖ Value the diversity and variety of gifts within our community;
❖ Seek to consciously understand other points of view by listening deeply;
❖ Encourage all to speak and to share our own ideas respectfully as we seek consensus;
❖ Strive to be transparent and honest in our personal interactions, communications, and decision-making;
❖ Welcome and facilitate the participation of all.
HISTORY OF THE CHURCH
New Jerusalem Church
Circa 1845
Theophilus Parsons, dean of Harvard Law School; Otis
Clapp, apothecary, publisher, member of the Massachusetts
House of Representatives, co-founder of The Massachusetts
Institute of Technology (M.I.T.), Boston University, and and
founder of The Home for Little Wanderers; Theophilus P.
Chandler, architect; Clarence Barron, financier, editor of the
Wall Street Journal, and president of Dow Jones; George
James Webb, hymnologist; and The Honorable Malcolm
Nichols, Mayor of Boston. A beautiful Gothic Revival
structure served the membership until the 1960s when it was
replaced with a new Church building and an eighteen story
high- rise apartment. Today, the main sanctuary of the
Church is accessible from Bowdoin Street. The Church has
also served as a place of worship and gatherings for the local
Muslim Community and other faith-based communities. The
Church has organizes and runs many programs to meet the
needs of the Church community and larger surrounding
neighborhood.
The foundation of the Boston Society of the New Jerusalem
(BSNJ) can be traced back to 1784 and the Green Dragon
Tavern in Boston. It was then and there that admirers of, and
those interested in learning more about, Emanuel
Swedenborg first met to hear a lecture on Swedenborg by
James Glen. In 1818, twelve people, some of whom were
among the early “Green Dragon Tavern crowd,” organized a
Swedenborgian Church in the city. Chartered in 1823, the
Boston Society of the New Jerusalem, Inc. is the first
Swedenborgian Church established in Massachusetts.
Members of the Church met at several locations before
finally settling in 1845 at its present location atop Beacon
Hill. The location inspired the name by which many today
know the society: the Church on the Hill (Swedenborgian).
Through the years, noted BSNJ members include Timothy
Harrington Carter, publisher, and founder of the Old Corner
Book Store; Sampson Reed, writer and mentor of Ralph
Waldo Emerson; Lydia Maria Child, author, social activist
and abolitionist; Warren Felt Evans, writer and healer;
Use of the Church facility is offered to human service and
outreach organizations.

CHURCH ON THE HILL - ESTABLISHED 1818
FromCraigWilliams
Hi everyone,
I hope everyone has been having a
great summer so far. I have been trying to
get out and enjoy the weather as much as
possible. We have been extremely busy
here at the church over the past months.
Between all of the events that go on here
seven days a week, we have been running
around nonstop.
We had been holding the Oasis
Monday Night Dinner in the function room
for over a year now. The guests have been
very respectful of the space and we have
been putting out some great meals. If
anyone would like to help with the meal,
stop by the office and talk to me or stop in
some Monday night around 5 PM.
On August 17 there will be a ‘Chat
with the Treasurer’ following Senior Lunch.
This will be a chance for any church
member to ask questions and hear from
Susanne about all of the church’s finances.
All church members are encouraged to
attend.
Richard Berman hosted a Best
Buddies carnival themed fundraiser at the
church in April. There was a lot of donated
food, raffle prizes, and there were a bunch
of fun games for the kids. Richard is also
going to California in September for a Best
Buddies Challenge. He is in the process of
3
planning another fundraiser at the church
and we will keep you posted.
At the June Members Meeting, the
congregation voted Marvin Gonzalez as
the new President and Janet Forbes as
Vice President. Congratulations to them
both and we look forward to what you have
planned for the church.
We recently partnered with Chipotle
who opened a new restaurant in the
transportation building. They have been
donating food 3 days a week. While
training their new staff, they were donating
hundreds of pounds of burritos per week
which we have been handing out in the
Boston Common, at Common Art, and at
the Pilgrim Church night center, among
other places.
Anthony and Jesse have completely
cleaned and re-organized our kitchen. It
has never looked so good and we have
been getting lots of great feedback from all
of the groups that use it. We also installed
a new 3-bay sink to help keep the kitchen
efficient.
Eduardo Gonzalez has been hosting
weekly “Smash on the Hill” events in the
church function room. He invites youth
from around the city to come by and play
video games and they often have prizes.
They have been very successful and bring
in over 100 people!
I hope everyone has a great summer
and I apologize for the lateness of this
newsletter - with everything going on
around here, there isn’t enough time in the
day.
Craig

CHURCH ON THE HILL - ESTABLISHED 1818
Dear Church Members,
Many of you know me, Marvin
Gonzalez, your new President of
Boston Society of the New Jerusalem as
of June 6, 2016.
First of all, I would like to thank all of
you for your support in electing me in
such an important role and would like to especially thank the
president before me, Mary Guarino for all of the excellent and
dedicated work she has done for the church for so many years.
Mary has brought us many wonderful experiences and I will try
my best in filling the role she did so seamlessly.
A few of my goals as President is to work with all of the church
committees, providing them with any type of support and
guidance in order to ensure that their tasks are met. I will
continue to build strong relationships with all church members
with all of my heart. I hope that we have a prosperous year
together. May God always illuminate us to the right path,
especially when making decisions that impact our church
community. The executive officers and myself with the Board of
Governors are here to serve you, which will be continuously part
of our Mission.
May God bless all of you,
Marvin Gonzalez

Remembering Rob Day
I miss Rob. Early each Sunday Rob and I had
coffee long before others gathered. He was a whiz
at solving sudoku puzzles and he patiently tried to
teach me. One stormy Sunday as I arrived at
church Rob could tell I was upset. I explained that
I’d slipped and almost fallen and was worried about
the walk home. When the service was over and I
stepped outside, there was Rob offering his arm as
he walked with me until I was safely inside my front
door. He did this every Sunday the rest of the
winter. That’s the kind of guy he was.
!
After he received his serious diagnosis he
became very knowledgeable about his treatment.
Each Sunday he would tell me in great detail how
he was doing but never once complained. That’s
the kind of guy he was.
!
As his illness progressed he had difficulty
using the stairs. I suggested he ask someone to
light the candles and attach the mics. He said “no,
that’s my job”. That’s the kind of guy he was. I miss
you Rob. You were a sweet and caring man.

Church on the Hill Community Initiatives
The Church on the Hill, continues to
serve and enormous population through
out the year. In the past year we have
been hosting Ecclesia Ministries City
Reach which has been bringing in
hundreds of young people for overnight
visits allowing them to provide
thousands of marginalized people with
clothing and health and beauty aides.
participating with Boston Warm, a
collective of faith leaders and city officials
working in concert with services
providers on assisting with chronic
homelessness and rapid rehousing.
The Senior Lunches will continue
through out the summer. After the lunch
we will be inviting people to stay and
watch a movie and enjoy the air
conditioning.
The Womens group continues to meet
here each and every Monday and
Thursday. Suzie Canalie’s group The
Womens Locker Room Foundation has
been provided a great deal of personal
hygiene items to the group.
The Monday Night Dinners have been
extremely successful and may move to
the Common for a couple of days in the
summer to enjoy an out door dinner al
fresco.
On a monthly basis the church has been
hosting college groups from around the
country as part of the “Alternative
Breaks” Program. These young people
spend a week at the church and while
visiting they assist local organizations
with community projects.
The Church has
purchased an AED,
Automated External
Defibrillator and has
Certified 20 people
on how to use this
as well as CPR.
The first round of
classes included facilitators from AA, the
Womens Group, Monday Night Dinner,
BostonView and Church Staff. There
were some people that were
disappointed they were not included in
the limited class. If there is another
group of no more than 10 interested, we
could ask the Board of Governors to
approve another class.
Hollywood on the Hill, formally Friday
Flix continues to take place every friday,
providing a warm/cool place to relax and
enjoy a movie and refreshments.
A resident of the BostonView has started
a Bereavement Group that meets here
every other Tuesday.
The church continues to make
sandwiches each Wednesday that get
distributed in the Boston Common
alternately each week between Starlight
Ministries and our own Mary Guarino.
We are currently looking into ServeSafe
Food Safety training. This is essential for
those involved with the various food
programs (Sunday Lunch, Senior Lunch,
Monday Dinner, Etc.) If you are
interested please call the office.

Simple Acts of Kindness...
Twelve-year-old Mathew Flores is a bit different from the rest of
us. He loves junk mail. Until recently, advertisements were the only reading materials
available to the boy. Flores loves reading so much that he
approached his mailman in a Salt Lake City suburb on Friday to
ask if he could have any junk mail.
The strange question prompted the mailman, Ron Lynch, to ask
why. Lynch detailed Flores' response in a heartbreaking
Facebook post afterward.
"Today while delivering mail to his apartment complex, I saw
him reading ads, and then he asked me if I had any extra mail he
could read," Lynch wrote. "He told me his wish is to have books
to read. I told him the library had many, but he said they don't
have a car, and couldn't afford the bus."
Lynch then asked his Facebook friends if they could spare some
books for Flores:
"Most kids his age want electronics! It's great to see his desire,
and you should have seen him beam when I said I could help!"
"He's counting on me," he concluded, "so I'm counting on you!"
Lynch thought the Facebook post might bring in 50 to 60 books, he told local news outlet KSL. But
his request went viral.
People from around the world, including the U.K., Australia and India, have sent books, Lynch said.
He told The Huffington Post hundreds of books have been delivered to the boy's door so far, with
hundreds more likely on their way, and he's amazed at the generosity.
"I'm stunned and humbled by what happened," said Lynch. "I deserve little credit."
He has a message for everyone who has sent in a book or contributed:
"Its [sic] all of you who cared enough to do something about it that are the true heroes of this story.
Bless you all, and thank you all so much!"
When books first started arriving, Flores was in disbelief.
“They said ‘These books are for you.’” Flores told Salt Lake City's Deseret News on Sunday. "I
thought they were mistaken, but they were for me."
He said he can't wait to share the books with other kids, and has promised to read every last one.
Those interested in sending books may ship them to:

Refreshing Summer Recipe
Gazpacho
Who wants to cook during summer? Not us!
Which is why we love cold soup recipes, like this
one for Gazpacho from Chef Erica Wides.
Staying cool never tasted so good!
Now that we are fully immersed in summertime
weather, and it’s so hot you can’t stand to be
near yourself, do you really want to cook? I don’t,
and I cook for a living!
Ingredients
•
•
•
So whenever I can get away with it, I “cook” cold
stuff, like big salads of greens, fruit, and
marinated vegetables, and of course, cold soup. I
especially love gazpacho, the chilled soup of
tomatoes, cucumbers, onions and tomato juice.
•
What I love so much about gazpacho, is that you
can whip up a batch in minutes, then keep it in a
pitcher or bottle in the fridge. And take big swigs
of it whenever you want. It makes a great quick
lunch or snack, or even a not-sweet post-workout
drink.
1 large or two medium onions; red, yellow,
white, doesn’t matter
2 large cucumbers, peeled and seeded
28-ounce can of diced tomatoes with their
juice or 3-4 fresh beefsteak tomatoes. You
may want to cut the fresh tomatoes in half
crosswise, (like across the equator) and
squeeze out the seeds
12 ounce can of tomato juice or V8 is
good too, and some good olive oil
Directions
1. Dice, chop, pulse or blend everything except
the juice or V8, then add the juice as needed to
make it as soup-like as you please. I also drizzle
in some good olive oil while I’m blending, maybe
two tablespoons, and a little splash of red-wine or
sherry vinegar.
2. Add salt to taste and a dash of hot sauce if
you’re feeling sassy. Cover the bowl or pitcher
and chill the gazpacho until very cold.
3. Before you serve it, taste it and adjust the
seasoning. Cold foods sometimes need a little
more muscle to get through to our taste buds.
4. Serve up that tasty cold soup in chilled bowls
and dream of warm, sultry nights in Andalucía, or
Albuquerque, or Albany. Summer can be
delicious anywhere, enjoy it while it lasts.
You can also fluff it up into a full meal by adding a
handful of crabmeat, or a chopped hard-cooked
egg, or a can of salmon to the bowl. Sometimes
I’ll just dump a can of drained black beans in too,
and then stir in a little greek yogurt and some
chopped cilantro. Fabuloso!
So how do I make it, you’re probably asking right
about now? Well, I’ll tell you.

Lydia Maria Child (1802-1880)
Member of the Church
Writer, Author, Abolitionist,
Civil Rights Advocate
Writer of “Over the River”
“It is my mission to help in the breaking down of classes, and to make
all men feel as if they were brethren of the same family, sharing the
same rights, the same capabilities, and the same responsibilities. While
my hand can hold a pen, I will use it to this end; and while my brain can
earn a dollar, I will devote it to this end.” Lydia Maria Child
