new ones. The holidays begin with the most American of meals—
Thanksgiving Dinners at the Williamsburg Lodge and in our
taverns. Cheer the lighting of the cressets to guide your path
through the Revolutionary City’s exquisitely decorated historic
homes, taverns and government buildings during our many
Illuminations. Make a date to enjoy A 1940s Bassett Hall
Christmas to learn how the Rockefellers celebrated, and take a
winter stroll in the garden to see the lighted 10-foot-tall tree
in the Tea House. Then, tour five lavishly decorated homes and
private buildings in the 54th Annual Christmas Homes Tour.

12 Days and Night Before Christmas. The entire family will enjoy this event as people
from our past return to bring two classic Christmas stories to life. (Duration 45 min.) Art

A 1940s Bassett Hall Christmas. Imagine celebrating Christmas with the Rockefellers
at Bassett Hall. Multiple lighted trees and candles in every window welcome you to the
festively decorated house. The dining room table is set for a lavish Christmas dinner party.
Mrs. Rockefeller’s gold Paris gown is laid out in the bedroom. The kitchen reflects busy
dinner preparations and service, while the neighboring servants’ living room features
Swedish-style Christmas decorations. Listen to carolers and enjoy hot cider and a cookie
served in the cottage. And be sure to take a winter stroll in the garden to see the lighted
10-foot-tall tree in the Tea House. Bassett Hall. Dec. 11 & 18. 6–7:45 p.m. $10 in addition to

54th Annual Christmas Homes Tour. Capture the holiday spirit with a picturesque tour
of some of the magnificent homes in and around Colonial Williamsburg’s Revolutionary City,
several open to the public for the first time. Sponsored by the Green Spring Garden Club, Inc.,
the tour features festive floral decorations that have made this a legendary Christmas destination.
Visit three charming residences near Merchants Square: the Bryan House, the Catherine
Blaikley House and the Blaikley Kitchen. Near the Capitol, the Edinburgh Castle Tavern is
home to Bill Barker who portrays Thomas Jefferson for Colonial Williamsburg, and will
feature Mr. Barker’s extensive collection of Jefferson memorabilia. Also included are the
Elizabeth Carlos House and the recently renovated Newell Home, showcasing period architectural features and furnishings.
Tickets include free parking at the Colonial Williamsburg Regional Visitor Center and use of Foundation buses from the
Visitor Center to destinations around the Revolutionary City. Tickets will be available at the Visitor Center, Merchants
Square, Lumber House, and the Williamsburg Lodge on Friday, Dec. 6, 9 a.m.–6:30 p.m., and Saturday, Dec. 7,
8:30 a.m.–2:30 p.m. Tickets also will be available at each house on the tour during tour hours on Saturday. Advance

“At Christmas be Mery”: A Special Evening
at Historic Jamestowne. Sir George Yeardley,
Virginia’s governor in 1620, invites you to a
special evening at Historic Jamestowne. The
Captain of the Guard will escort you along
a cresset-lit path to a 17th-century Virginia
Christmas celebration. Learn of early English
Christmas traditions and what the earliest
Jamestown settlers expected during their
Christmastide. Herald the season by singing
carols in the historic church, enjoying light
refreshments by the bonfire, and witnessing
the firing of the Christmas guns in the
shadow of the old fort. Presented jointly
by The Colonial Williamsburg Foundation
and Historic Jamestowne. (Duration 2 hrs.)

Christmas Decorations Walking Tour.
Stroll the cobblestones of the holiday capital
on a guided look at Colonial Williamsburg’s
picturesque building exteriors and streets
decked in their holiday splendor. Learn about
the materials, construction techniques, and
traditions of Colonial Williamsburg’s classic

Cry Witch. The fate of Grace Sherwood is in
your hands! Charges of witchcraft were brought
against the unfortunate lass in 1706. You will
serve on the jury in this candlelit inquiry that
decides–is she or isn’t she a witch? Ask questions
of the witnesses, weigh the evidence, and deter–
mine the guilt or innocence of “the Virginia
Witch.” Not appropriate for young children
due to subject matter and intense emotion.

Decorating the Private Homes. Join us
for the 21st anniversary of this fun-filled
program that celebrates the decorating efforts
of Colonial Williamsburg employees who live
in our restored private residences. This pop–
ular program includes holiday decorating
tips, Williamsburg-style, announcement of
the winners of the private homes decorating
contest, and interesting facts about what goes
into decorating the Revolutionary City.

Divided Friends and Gentle Hearts. Prior
to the onset of the Civil War, Northern
reformer Dorothea Dix and Williamsburg
resident Sally Galt were friends. Despite the
bitter war, they continued to remain close
friends. Join in this interactive program that
allows you to meet both women. Find out
about the increased responsibilities
shouldered by Ms. Dix during the war. Dis­cover how Sally coped with the loss of her
brother and genteel lifestyle. Learn the story
of one of the Civil War’s most unusual bonds.

From Hog to Ham. Hogs provided a significant source of meat in the 18th century and
were a centerpiece to many a holiday dinner.
Learn the ins and outs of butchering . . . to
the rendering of lard . . . to the 18th-century
process for salt-curing the meat for preservation. Colonial Williamsburg’s Foodways staff
will provide an authentic demonstration.

Ghosts Amongst Us. When the sun goes
down, Williamsburg comes alive with spirited
adventure. Hear and see some of our haunted
history. Enter some of the haunted buildings
and sites, meet their ghostly inhabitants, and
encounter some who have lived to tell of their
supernatural experiences. Each of these onehour walking tours introduces you to a differ­
ent cast of characters. Due to subject matter,
this program is not appropriate for young

Army, lays aside the mantle of war and
begins his last, long, slow march home
and to private life. It is 1783, and his wife,
Martha, awaits his arrival at Mount Vernon.
Snow, ice, and a grateful public at every
stop slow his travels. Will he make it home
in time to celebrate Christmas with his family?

Grand Illumination. In the 18th century,
illuminations were sometimes held to
commemorate the birth of the reigning
sovereign. Today, we hold a Grand Illum­
ination in the Revolutionary City. Musical
performances from multiple stages throughout
the Revolutionary City beginning at 5:15 p.m.
and fireworks displays from three locations–
the Governor’s Palace, Magazine, and Capitol
at 7 p.m. make this event one that is not to
be missed! Dec. 8. 4:45-7:30 p.m. No ticket

Holiday Decorating Techniques and
Secrets. Watch members of the Colonial
Williamsburg landscape staff create two of
our signature Christmas decorations and
share tips you can take advantage of yearround. Learn the techniques we use to make
and decorate wreaths, swags, centerpieces,
and other traditional Williamsburg decorations using fresh fruit, greens, and other
natural material. You’ll leave with plenty of
information to make your own Williamsburg
decorations for the holidays or any time of
year. (Duration 1 hr.) Art Museums.

A Grand Medley of Entertainments. Owen
Murdock’s company gamely tries to present a
Grand Medley—an 18th-century traveling
variety show! They have high hopes of amazing
feats, strange beasts, and fast-paced hilarity,
but things aren’t going well for the company.
Their misfortunes provide a comedy of errors
for the entire family to enjoy. A colonial
entertainment so amusing that even George
Washington would have laughed! (Duration

 A Hero’s Homeward Journey. As the
American Revolutionary War comes to an

Historic Buildings. Enjoy a traditional
18th-century seasonal celebration featuring
the illumination of the colonial capital’s
neighborhoods with candles and cressets.
The spectacle will be accompanied by a
narrative, the firing of muskets, and music

chance to defend the cause of liberty. Enlist
in the Continental Army and discover life
as a new recruit and see what it was like to

soldiers lived, fought, and survived an eightyear ordeal to become free and independent.
Raise your hand to affirm your allegiance to
the 13 United States of America and your
journey will begin. Held outdoors in all

Joy in the Morning. Gather to hear the
good Reverend Gowan Pamphlet’s inspirational message for the Christmas season. The
pop­ular Baptist preacher speaks of inspiration, hope, and the importance of family.

Lanthorn Tour. The magic of the Revolutionary City comes to life by candle-light as
you explore the shops and workplaces of
Williamsburg’s most accomplished trades­
people. Nearly half of the population of
Williamsburg in the 1770s worked with their
hands to provide the goods and services
sought by their neighbors. On this walking
tour you will visit four shops and learn
about masters, journeymen, apprentices,
and the technology of the trades, as well
as the circumstances that shaped Virginia’s
economy and the lives of those who made up
the original silent majority. (Duration 1 hr.)

Papa Said, Mama Said. While enslaved,
African Americans continued to hand their
cultural morals and values down from generation to generation. Participate in this

Pigs to Pork. In the days before refrigeration,
special techniques were needed to preserve
meats. Demonstrations will focus on butchering, salting, lard rendering, curing, grinding

Gain an understanding of the work and life
of the enslaved as well as European and

that he can buy his wife a fur for Christmas.
He tells her he’s working late at the office,

suspected other woman, hypnotism, the
notorious Santa/ burglar Kris Kreigle and his
gun-toting fiancee, and a confused police­man
add up to a rollicking tale that is hilarious
Christmas entertainment.

Wine Cellar. What do you do when your
true love’s father stands in the way of your
romance? Send in your servant to do your
dirty work, of course! This fast-paced farce
filled with disguises, deceptions, and devils
has entertained audiences on both sides of
the Atlantic since 1710. It’s sure to delight
you with its historically accurate costumes,
sets, and witty word banter that makes an
evening at the 18th-century theater so much

 What is a Family? The concept of family
is as old as mankind itself. But its social and
legal definitions have continually evolved
over the years. Discover the ties that bind us
together in this moving program by Valarie
Holmes. Meet Ann Ashby and her children,
who escape the bonds of slavery and are
reunited with family through the efforts of
Ann’s free black husband. Learn about the
legal and social challenges slaves and free blacks
faced in colonial Virginia as they sought to

Williamsburg Civil War Tour. The old
colonial capital of Williamsburg played an
important part in the American Civil War.
In addition to serving as headquarters, first
for the Southern Army and later for the
Northern Army, it experienced a tragic battle
on its doorstep. Join in a walking tour of the
major Civil War sites of the town, meet people
who were here, and learn more about Wil­
liams­burg’s role in this important period of

ignite your imagination throughout the per­
formance. Step back in time to when television

 Christmas Brass. Celebrate the season
with a unique concert by talented balladeers
Gabe Stone and Stephen Christoff. They’ll
offer a fascinating and tuneful show
featuring the serpent and sackbut—two
rare brass instruments from the 18th
century! You’ll also hear songs and music
played on a variety of instruments, including
the mandolin, guitar, mouth harp, and bones.
