Serious transport injury data
(1) Two main data sources
• Police/road safety agency crash data (road)
• Hospital records (road and other)
(2) Hospital record data
• Administrative system; almost all hospitals
• Data abstracted from records & coded in hospitals
• Aggregated to State/Territory level, then national level
(3) Properties of hospital data
•
•
•
•
•
National file about 1 year after reference period (AIHW NHMD)
Demographics, diagnoses; also external causes (e.g. crash)
Limited to what is been documented in hospital records
‘In traffic’ is similar to ‘Road’ but not exactly the same
Higher coverage of vulnerable users than crash data

Today: hospital data
(1) Users
• Vulnerable: motor cyclists; pedal cyclists; pedestrians
• Protected: occupants of cars, ATVs and goods vehicles
(2) Inclusions & methods

Summary
(1) Vulnerable road users account for rise in serious injury
(2) Mainly pedal cyclists and motorcyclists…
• Pedestrians show little change
(3) …especially
• Males, especially middle aged
• Major city residents (pedal cyclists)
(4) Pedal/motor cyclists are rising as a proportion of cases
(5) More to it…
• Exposure measures (NB cyclists, pedestrians)
• Case severity (NB disability outcomes)
• Data linkage to better select ‘road’ cases in hospital data and draw
on strengths of hospital, crash and deaths data
• Settle on sources and methods for measuring serious injury
