Dear Parents & Guardians,
We have lots of information to share with you in this newsletter. So we
broke it down into sections.
Goodbye Jeannie Wernig, our school casual secretary who is replacing Kathy-Jo
Trumbley has accepted a permanent position at École des Deux Mondes. She will
be starting there on Monday, December 2. We are very sorry to see her go as
Mme Wernig has been with us for over a year and had become part of our school
community. We are deeply grateful for all her work and wish her the best in her
new position.
Supervision
Our school is fortunate to have such active and dedicated parents.
This last month we have worked together to address the concerns of supervision
during recess. Please read the PAC newsletter to find out about some of the initiatives that our Parent Advisory Council is planning to support the school in that
area. One of the school’s main initiatives is:
The Peer Mentoring and Leadership Program for students in grades 4 and 5.
This week, students in grades 4 and 5 will be given the opportunity to apply
to the Peer Mentoring and Leadership Program. We are seeking students motivated and willing to be positive leaders around the school, to help their peers, and
to speak French outside of class.
After an intense training course, the students selected for this program
will be creating more opportunities for students to be involved in new games during recess, facilitating conflict resolution on the playground, and providing guidance to their peers. This program is led by our Vice-Principal, Mme Hwang with
the help of Karen Gauthier, our PAC Vice-President. Student applications will be
due by Friday, December 6. If you have any questions, please contact Mme Hwang
at school.
Tardiness As a staff, we have discussed the issue of students coming to school
late in the morning and we brought it up at our last PAC meeting. As an example,
here is the data for the week of November 18 – 22:
Date
Mon. Nov. 18
Tue. Nov. 19
Wed. Nov. 20
Thurs. Nov. 21
Fri. Nov. 22

During that week, we had over 10% of our students arriving late 4 days out of 5.
The percentage of students late got particularly high on Friday (18%). There are
all kinds of reasons for being late and we appreciate that it is not easy to get organized in the morning with several children sometimes heading in all different
directions. We also realize that some of our students arrive on time at school
but do take extra time to socialize by their lockers and do not make it to their
class by the second bell. We do think that it is important for students to be in
class ready to start on time in the morning as it enables them to understand the
instructions given at the start of the day and to have a successful day.
Teachers have reminded students the importance of punctuality and we
are working on getting students in class promptly when they arrive. We would appreciate your support to help students come here on time as much as possible.
We hope that together we will be able to improve the number of students arriving on time.
Quiet Hallways
If you attended our last assembly on November 22, you
saw Mme Hwang’s class presentation on Quiet Hallways. This is our school social
responsibility focus for the coming weeks. It involves walking in the hallways and
speaking, using our lockers and working quietly. The goal is to be mindful of others and to respect students working either in their classes or in the hallways
during instructional time. Students and staff are practicing that goal and some
students have been designated to monitor the hallways and share with us how we
are doing. Please join us in modeling the expected behaviour when you are in the
school.
Thank you once again for your support in all our school projects.

L’atelier du Père Noël
(Santa’s Workshop)
With the holiday season in mind, on Friday, December 6th, the grade 4/5
class will be hosting an event called Santa’s Workshop. Classes will be given the chance to purchase items for their friends and family. Everything
will be sold for $2.
It would be helpful to talk about the gift of giving at home and to perhaps
create a list of those people your child would like to purchase gifts. Please
keep in mind, the grade 5 entrepreneurial fair will be taking place the following week as well.
In order for this event to be successful, families are asked to rummage
through their house over the next couple of weekends and donate their
“gently used” items. They can be placed in the multi-purpose room (across
from Mme Brennan’s classroom) in the labelled boxes before or after
school. An example of items to bring in are: dvd’s, cd’s, toys, items that
mom and dad no longer need, books etc.
Since the grade 4/5 class and parent volunteers will be wrapping the purchases, we would also appreciate donations of wrapping paper, ribbon,
tape, bows, and gift tags. These may also be placed in the specified boxes
in the multi-purpose room as well.
Proceeds will go towards class field trips and a portion will go towards a
children’s charity. Your help and cooperation are greatly appreciated.
Sincerely,
Madame Hwang

2013-2014 Grade 4 & 5 SnowPasses: Sign Up Now
The SnowPass helps to keep kids active
during the winter months
One of Canada's easiest ways to get kids healthy and active this winter is now available. The Canadian Ski Council's SnowPass is available online. It's an unbeatable offer: it
provides three lift passes at each of the 150+ ski areas nation-wide for Canadian kids in
Grade 4 and Grade 5.
SnowPass Advantage: "Introducing children to skiing and snowboarding at an early age
gives them lifetime access to these healthy winter sports," says Patrick Arkeveld, President
and CEO of the Canadian Ski Council. "It keeps them fit, less prone to obesity, and outside
and active during the winter months. Better yet, skiing and snowboarding are sports kids
can do with the entire family for a lifetime."
How It Works: The Canadian Ski Council's SnowPass gives kids in grades 4 and 5 (born
in 2003 or 2004) three lift tickets at each participating ski area all across Canada for the
entire winter; providing them with an opportunity to ski or snowboard hundreds of times
over the winter season. You only need to apply once for the SnowPass and the pass is
valid until the end of grade 5. This means if you apply in grade 4 the pass is valid for two
years.
Applying is Easy: To sign up, visit www.snowpass.ca, and you have a choice of either
uploading your child's picture, enter your payment and their proof of age, or our printed
option that allows you to fill out the information, print the application to mail in to the Canadian Ski Council with a photo, proof of age and payment; all for a one-time administration fee of $29.95 including taxes. Signing up online is the quickest and easiest way to
apply for your child's Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass card. SnowPass cards will be mailed to you
beginning in mid-November, before the December 1st SnowPass season start date!
Where to Use it: The Grade 4 & 5 SnowPass is a national program and is valid at over
150 ski areas across Canada including 32 ski areas in British Columbia, 19 ski areas in Alberta, 1 ski area in Saskatchewan, 2 ski areas in Manitoba, 33 ski areas in Ontario, 57 ski
areas in Quebec, 8 in Atlantic Canada and 1 in the Yukon. With ski areas participating
across Canada, families will not have to travel far to put this SnowPass to use. Kids can
easily track how many lift passes they have left by visiting www.snowpass.ca.
Grade 4 and 5 SnowPass information and applications are available online at
www.snowpass.ca or www.passeportdesneiges.ca. Application forms are also being distributed to elementary schools across Canada beginning in early November.
