As indicated previously we have been working at reducing some expenses to try to improve the Branch’s bottom line – regular paid Friday night entertainment cut out, the security company changed, no paid bartender on Monday nights. We are also looking at some new sources of revenue to augment our regular activities. One of these is open mic (pronounce mike) which has a features a variety of rock, country and jazz. I have attended a few nights and am enjoying the mix. Originally at no cost we are now paying a small weekly fee. Word is spreading and we are seeing a variety of participating musicians and a slowly growing audience. We have been organizing a mix of activities – music (Country Music Appreciation Event), trivia (Trivia For Charity), annual Veteran’s Dinner, senior’s interest (Tea and Toast) along with our regular sports and entertainment. Keep up on what is going on in the Branch and let your friends know what is happening as well. We are about helping veterans, promoting remembrance and service to the community. We can also enjoy ourselves along the way. In September I was at the Zone G-5 convention at Stittsville Branch and in October I attended the District G convention in Kingston (Sunday only) with Comrades Brent Craig and Carol Raoult. During the ride to Kingston we talked about a lot of things and will be discussing a number of them with the Executive in the near future. Recently I was talking to a Branch member about attending conventions. We both feel it is important that the Branch be represented at these events. I have attended a fair number of Zone and District conventions over the last number of years. Since 2010 I have attended all 3 Dominion (Winnipeg, Halifax, Edmonton) and both Provincial (Sault Ste. Marie, Kingston) conventions in company with Comrade Brent Craig. The Branch member I was talking to was under the impression that the Branch had completely paid for those out of town trips. For the record, the Branch provided Brent and I a total of $1,500 ($750 each) to attend the Dominion convention in Winnipeg. It did not cover all our expenses. The Branch’s financial picture since that time has been such that Brent and I have travelled at our own expense and the Branch has only covered the convention registration fees. We go to these events because we feel it is important that the Branch be represented during discussions that cover the whole organization and will have an 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 impact right down to our level. Both Brent and I have stood up at the microphone when we felt there were issues we thought should be addressed. We talk to members from across the country to get different perspectives and visit local Branches to mine for ideas which we might be able to make use of in our Branch or Zone. And yes we do enjoy ourselves during our time away. Doug Cody MILITARY SERVICE RECOGNITION BOOK The first volume of the Military Service Recognition Book has been published. The Branch received a number of copies which will be distributed free of charge to local schools, manors, etc. Of the names submitted so far from this Branch only one was put into this volume (James Simmonds). Submissions for future editions will be taken by me and sent in. There is no idea when a particular name will be in a volume. The Branch will be holding its Remembrance Dinner on Saturday 08 November. Timings: Meet and Greet at 5:30. Supper at 6:30. Meal: Roast beef with fixings ($20) or Vegetarian Option ($15). Dress: Legion with medals. Cut – Off Date: Sunday 02 November Veteran’s Dinner On 14 October the Branch held its annual Veteran’s Dinner. This year Branch members were joined by residents from Perley-Rideau hospital, West End Villa, New Orchard, Hillel and Carlingview, about 80 persons in all. Our Doris Jenkins and a few others from the Perley were unable to make it due to a quarantine placed on their floor. After the dinner Comrade Howard “Scotty” Scott was presented with the Korean “Ambassador For Peace Medal” by the Defence Attache from the Embassy of the Republic of Korea Colonel Jang Min Choi and his Aide. There was no doubt that Scotty was surprised and pleased. Thanks to the L.A. for providing the shepherd’s pie and quiche. 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 Some of our guests at the Veteran’s Dinner Howard “Scotty” Scott receiving award from Colonel Choi and Aide 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 POPPY NEWS This year’s campaign will last from Friday 31 October until Monday 10 November – 11 days. It is the shortest possible campaign possible. The longest would be 17 days. In addition to our business routes, manors and schools we will be located in 6 commercial spots – Carlingwood (2), Westgate, Lincoln Fields, Ikea, Real Canadian Superstore and Walmart Laurentian. There are still some spots available so check with me to see if there is a location and time that would suit your schedule. My number is 722-8859. Thanks to Comrade Evelyn Brunton who suggested getting trays put together during our Saturday night entertainment. On Oct 18th and 25th a lot of trays were dealt with. Thanks to all who helped out. There is no question that many hands make light work. Remembrance Day Services Carlingwood Shopping Centre 11:00 a.m. Westboro Cenotaph (unofficial gathering) 11:00 a.m. Westboro Cenotaph preceded by parade that starts at 1:45 2:00 p.m. Requests have been made for Branches to start distributing poppies immediately due to the deaths of Corporal Nathan Cirillo and Warrant Officer Patrice Vincent. The Royal Canadian Legion’s policy will not allow that to happen. Our Branch did receive such a request and we have made available poppy pins and poppy wrist bands which we are allowed to do. These are currently available at the upstairs bar and Monkey Joe’s Bar and Grill on Carling Avenue. It asks Canadians to join the Legion’s national letter-writing campaign to urge the Government to act now and implement the recommendations from the ACVA report. As We Prepare to Remember Our Fallen, and Those Who Serve, Government Again Fails Our Soldiers With November 11th just around the corner, a great deal of focus will once again come upon the sacrifices of the men and women who gave their lives in the service of Canada. Millions of Canadians will pay their respects to the soldiers, sailors, airmen and airwomen, along with members of the RCMP, who put their lives on the line to protect us every day. Yet each day that goes by, the Government of Canada is failing to take up the torch and provide the proper care and benefits for our ill and injured Veterans and their families. Almost 40 experts recently gave evidence before the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Veterans Affairs (ACVA), laying out in precise detail the situation faced by Canada's Veterans. The Committee considered this evidence and drafted a series of 14 recommendations. The Committee's report, which was unanimously supported by all of its members (who represented all political parties), laid out its recommendations in a straight forward manner that the Government could follow to address ways in which Canada could provide enhanced care for its Veterans. And how did the Government respond? Here is a quote from the response, "…the Government is pleased to indicate that it agrees with the spirit and intent of the vast majority of the Committee's recommendations. Many of these recommendations involve potentially complex changes to some Veteran programming. The implications of any potential changes must, therefore, be carefully assessed." But wait a second, Government just heard from almost 40 experts; it has 14 recommendations that clearly spell out what needs to be done. What more could possibly need to be assessed? 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 This isn't a new situation. The Government of Canada has been dealing with Veterans since the end of the First World War. Certainly the Government wants us to all remember that 2014 marks the 100th Anniversary of this conflict. But why the Government continues to have almost the same issues in looking after ill and injured service personnel after all these years is astonishing. Studies, committee meetings, expert evidence, and countless reports over the years have all spoken to the fact there are clearly shortcomings in Veterans' care. What is different now is that the Government has clear directions to address the major issues that will improve the lives of Veterans and their families. Regrettably what is the same is the use of Government-speak such as, "Given the interdepartmental, fiscal and legal implications of this recommendation, further due diligence is required to address this proposal." The Royal Canadian Legion will not idly stand by. Our call to action has gone out and we launched a national letter writing campaign calling on the Government to take the action needed to implement the recommendations from the ACVA report. We are calling on all Canadians to support this effort and send a letter to their Member of Parliament right from the Legion's website http://www.legion.ca/call-for-action-onthe-new-veterans-charter/ There should be no doubt that the adequate care for our injured Veterans and their families is an urgent issue, particularly as we place more military personnel in harm's way with new military operations Canada is engaging in. The men and women who deal with the shortcomings of the current care and benefits programs offered by the Government suffer every day at great personal and financial expense. Their families suffer right along with them. For those who have done so much for our country, it is the very least we can do to "…take up the torch, be yours to hold it high." We must not break faith with those who die. Send the Legion's letter to your MP today and show you care for all of Canada's ill and injured Veterans. Thank you, on behalf of the more than 300,000 Royal Canadian Legion members across Canada. 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 Courtesy of "The Chronicle Herald" and available for purchase at www.HeraldShop.ca, with 50% of the proceeds going to the family of Nathan Cirillo. 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 'A Journey On the Heroes Highway' A journey on the Heroes Highway, A very singular personal 'ride'. He awakens in almost all of us, a stirring National Pride. The cost to him, no fee is asked, He has already paid the fare. In love, service and dedication, protecting our lovely country fair. He does not see with mortal eyes there are people standing by. He cannot feel the breeze upon his face, as he travels home or see so many people cry. He will not view the people on the route standing to pay respects He only knows that he is, "Loved and Brave and Good and Proud," He has awakened by his His death, our Country's thoughts & Goals. 2014 © Brian McPhillips (On Facebook: Capital B Brian McPhillips) 389 – 391 Richmond Road, Ottawa, ON K2A 0E7 / Office (613) 725-3475 / Lounge (613) 725- 2778 / Fax (613) 725-1311 RECOGNITION In this picture Comrade Eleanor Cowburn is recognized for her 60 years of membership in The Royal Canadian Legion. On Day One, we enjoyed a dinner buffet and had time to play the slot machines and/or visit the gaming tables (blackjack, baccarat, roulette, craps, and more). On the second day, we also went on a shopping excursion to Orillia. The hotel was very accommodating, providing everything we needed. There were accessible rooms for people with disabilities and restaurants on site. On October 10, as we were leaving for home, the casino’s bus tour coordinator came on our bus and passed out water and cookies for everyone. A real treat. One of the participants, Joan Richard, summed up her experience, saying: “What a beautiful trip! Everything was super. The rooms were gorgeous. I loved all of it and definitely would go again.” Special thanks to Ruby McKinney for helping to make this trip run so smoothly. We are looking into organizing another trip to Casino Rama in the spring.
