WELCOME TO THE CONFERENCE
FROM PRESIDENT-ELECT AND 2014 CONFERENCE CHAIR
The Many Faces of the 2014 CAEYC Conference
As ECE professionals and volunteers we see the many faces in the children and families we work
with. We wear many faces as well and you will see many of them at the CAEYC 2014 Conference. We have worked hard to create an engaging and interesting conference for you this year. “Learn
from past. Embrace the present. Create the Future” is not only the theme for our event, it was our
guiding principle as we discussed, planned, collaborated and negotiated to get the conference
ready for you. You will see us all around the conference, wearing our happy, excited, interested,
learning and leading faces. Leadership

Advocacy
On Leadership Day, Thursday, April 3, we will be
wearing our leadership faces—as we use this
opportunity to network with others, learn about
new ideas and connect with our CAEYC history. This
day brings us Jonathan Michael Bowman as our
keynote presenter to talk about visioning our best
work. The Leadership Day luncheon will offer an informal opportunity to
network and interact with others.
The Center for Social Change will have us putting on
our advocacy faces and will be open on Saturday,
12:00pm - 4:00pm to engage in conversation about
difficult issues in our field, collect resources for
the work of social change with information and
activities on ecology, anti-bias curriculum, music and join forces with
others to create change for a better world for children. The Concerned
Educators Allied for Safe Environments (CEASE), Non-Violence in the
Lives of Children Project (NVP), and Peace Camps will be there.
Thursday evening, we wear our celebrating faces as
we honor those who have contributed much to the
field of ECE at the Honor an Educator Reception to
be held at the Kidspace Children’s Museum. Join us
as we celebrate excellence.
We will undoubtedly see some confused faces as
we learn more about the issues facing us, like the
proposed transitional kindergarten that has the
potential to transform the way four-year olds are
taught and what is expected of the learners in
kindergarten and early elementary school.
Throughout the conference
there will be formal and informal opportunities to
talk with leaders at the Hub and the CAEYC booth in
the Expo Hall. The expo hall is a great place for some
serious shopping for learning materials and visit
with long-time partners of your program and find
new and exciting vendors for your program needs.
Play
Children need play in their lives and we can see
the importance of play in their play faces, we have
opportunities for you to do the same! Come by
the Hangout to play with materials provided for
enjoyment and relaxation and engage in some
organized group activities. Your play face will also
be valuable as you and your groups play dress up for the photo booth at
the CAEYC booth in the expo hall. Make new friends or spend time with
old friends just relaxing and catching up in the Hangout.
Learning
Serious learning faces will be everywhere as we hear
from keynote presenters, featured presenters and
carefully selected presenters. Regina Louise is our
Friday keynote presenter talking about resilience
and persistence. Many outstanding presenters have
gathered from far and wide to help us better serve
the children and families of our state. We hope you find the workshops
throughout the conference just right for your needs and the work you
have to do. In addition, our past leaders, the previous presidents for
CAEYC, will share their thoughts and insights during a panel discussion
on Friday afternoon.
Faces full of curiosity will be found on the “Spring on
the Bus” tour of the Pasadena Waldorf School, The
Outdoor Classroom Project, and Mothers’ Club on
Saturday, April 5 from 8:30am-12:00pm, sponsored
by Southern California Valley AEYC.
Our remembering faces will be
there as we share thoughts and
memories about those who are no longer with us
but have contributed so much to the children and
our field. Please be sure to visit the Memorial Wall
in the registration area to learn about those who we
remember.
We have wondering faces that reflect the
discoveries we might make during the conference. There will be a film festival on Saturday to view films
and engage in reflective discussion on topics such
as play, English language learners and children’s
learning.
Join
If you are not a member of CAEYC, we hope that you
will join us to build an even stronger ECE profession.
And for all of you attending this year’s conference,
we look forward to our face-to-face connection.
Wishing everyone happy faces full of satisfaction
and inspiration as you head back to your daily lives
and the work that captures your heart.

How to Make the Most of Your Conference Experience...
Program Guidelines
Child Policy
CAEYC plans our Annual Conference & Expo with great care. It is
our goal to provide you with workshops, events, entertainment
and exhibits that will enrich your professional life in many
different ways. To assist you in maximizing your conference
experience, we would like to offer the following suggestions:
•
To maintain a professional atmosphere throughout the
Conference and Expo, as well as to ensure the safety of
attendees, presenters, personnel, and exhibits, CAEYC does not
allow children under the age of 16 years, including infants, in
educational programs or in the Expo at any time.
Allow approximately 30 minutes to get to workshops
so you can arrive in plenty of time to avoid a closed
workshop. Conference volunteers must close a
workshop when all chairs are occupied (full-capacity) to
conform to fire code regulations.
•
If a workshop is not what you need or expect, then
please leave quietly. A more suitable workshop may be
available nearby.
•
As an alternative to traditional learning experiences,
consider visiting the CAEYC Hub, Center for Social
Change or the Hangout.
•
Please allow yourself time to relax and reflect on your
conference experience. Consider: learning to “slow
down” as your personal learning objective.
Conference Workshop Schedule
For those who have their own computer with Internet access,
plan your day with the online Conference workshop schedule. By
using the quick link found on the Conference Attendees page at
www.caeyc.org, you can search for event details by speaker
name, learning track and date. Choose from a variety of workshops among 35 learning tracks including Spanish and Mandarin
offerings. Then read workshop descriptions, learning levels, and
presenter biographies, and review handouts before you attend.

Make a difference to families and children in the Pasadena area!
CAEYC is committed to partnering with community agencies to make life a little easier for families and
children. And because we wish to leave a positive impact in the Pasadena area, we encourage CAEYC
members and conference attendees to bring one new item listed below to the CAEYC Conference to
donate to Mothers’ Club Family Learning Center.
Founded in 1961, Mothers’ Club Family Learning Center prepares families living in isolation and poverty
to succeed in school and in life. To fulfill their mission, Mothers’ Club provides FREE two-generation
learning programs to disadvantaged families with children ages 0-5.
Mothers’ Club programs are built on two guiding principles: in order for significant, long-term change to
occur within a family, they must reach both parent and child and educate them together; and the most
critical time to reach a family is when children are proven to be most vulnerable and impressionable,
between birth and 5 years-old. Mothers’ Club promotes strong parent/child relationships and
encourages friendships and mutual support among mothers, thereby creating a stronger community for
all families.

PASSION TO ACTION
When: Saturday, April 5
Where: Ballroom Building Room E
All activities will include personal in-depth discussions to help participants bring their passion to life. Leadership skills will be woven
throughout each area. Activities include action plans to take back to your community to help your passion grow into reality. Visualize
how your passion is like an acorn—through leadership, support and action that little seed can blossom and grow into a tree that creates
and spreads change.
12:00pm-12:30pm
Musical Opening: Jacki Breger will lead us in singing together to energize us for the lively and important discussions
to follow.
12:30pm-3:00pm
Continuous Table Discussions in the Following Advocacy Topics:
• Peace Camp: Peace Camp provides an alternative day camp experience which fosters an understanding of Peace, Social
Justice, and Environmental Awareness appropriate to the needs of the children involved. Join Peace Camp leaders from
Santa Cruz and Orange County to discuss what sets Peace Camp apart from other camps, techniques used to teach
peacekeeping skills, and how Peace Camp can be adapted to the Early Childhood Classroom or Group Setting in an age
and skill appropriate way.
•Anti-Bias: Louise Derman-Sparks and Bill Sparks will be at the Anti-bias Center. Louise will facilitate a discussion about
the role of conflict and disequilibrium in anti-bias work. Key themes are (1) Anti-bias work generates disagreements and
dissonance, (2) Conflict is a productive part of the learning process, and (3) Anti-bias educators need to understand and
know how to manage conflict as a healthy dynamic in the pursuit of change. Bill will offer a discussion about the use
of persona dolls in anti-bias work. It will include sample activities and opportunity for people to explore applying the
persona doll method to their settings. Both also will be available to answer general questions about anti-bias education
work.
•Ecology: We live in an era in which children spend many hours indoors or attending structured after-school activities.
Richard Louv, author of Last child in the Woods, created the term “Nature-Deficit Disorder”. In his book, Louv describes the
possible negative consequences to individual health and the social turmoil as children remain indoors more often and are
using their sensory exploration skills less and less. This can result in attention difficulties and higher rates of physical and
emotional disorders. Ann Pelo, emphasizes the need to nurture ecological identity in the lives of young children in her
book The Goodness of Rain. Led by Karin Pavelek and Pam Bonneville we will discuss the importance of children bonding
with nature and looking beyond the walls they live in.
•
Three Cups of Tea: How do we create a community of staff, families and children? Explore the importance of relationship
based early childhood education and care using the cultural traditions of the “Three Cups of Tea.” Welcoming prospective
or new families, creating trusting relationships and then working together to provide quality care and education for
children all require building community. Share your successes and challenges with members of the Non-Violence in the
Lives of Children Project and Concerned Educators Allied for Safe Environments and come away inspired!
•
Honoring our Leaders: An interactive table to honor Chris Lamm one of our beloved Center leaders.
•Music: Music and singing play an important role in the work of advocates in movements for social justice and in the lives
of children. Jacki Breger will have songs and resources available to help you develop a deeper understanding of why
singing is so important. Find out what a zipper song is and why it is immensely valuable. Discover some new songs you
can take home. Have fun singing!
•
Authors Table: A number of Center colleagues have written books and recorded CDs, some of which are widely used by
teachers in both the classroom and college levels. Several of them will be working in the Center for Social Justice. This is
an opportunity for you to browse through the “library.” Talk with the author of an old favorite, discover a new favorite and
think about becoming an author yourself.
•
Honor Wall: Write a message to inspire all of us to keep the work of our past leaders moving forward.
•
Book Give Away: Put your name in the box to win a book. Must be present at drawing from 3-4 to win.
3:00pm-4:00pm
Musical Closing:
Jacki Breger joins us again with songs and singing to honor our work and pay tribute to Pete Seeger, Chris Lamm
and advocates past and present.

language learner, utilizing panel discussion and video for a bird’s eye view of best practices!
Session Description: This session takes a sharp look at monolingual teachers and their interactions with
preschool dual language learners. Featuring video, it focuses on the stages of preschool second language
acquisition and hands-on strategies at each stage. It demystifies dual language learning by providing a myriad
of video observations, pair-share time, and panel discussions. With their expertise, four panelists present a rich
context in which to explore preschool dual language learning!
Panelists: Dr. Marlene Zepeda, Consultant, Author, Professor at California State University, Los Angeles;
Julie Espinoza, Education Director, Mothers’ Club Family Literacy Center, Pasadena; Sally Durbin, Co-founder,
Teaching at the Beginning, Inc.; and Moisés Román, Curriculum Director, Early Care and Education Centers,

12:30pm-2:00pm
Theme: “What about Play Matters?”
Film Clips: IT’S ESSENTIAL! Join Play Matters! advocates to view film clips showing children at play. Session Discussion: Be part of a lively discussion about how we can help people in our communities to
understand why play is essential. What factors in play make for a joyful experience? What may get in the way of
the joy? What benefits do children get from playing freely? What can we do to ensure that all children have the
chance to play? How can we support and improve play opportunities at home, at school, and in the community? Facilitators: Gay Macdonald, Executive Director of UCLA Early Care and Education, together with Play Matters! co-chairs Terry Ogawa and Laura Goldman, will facilitate an interactive conversation about why play is
essential and how we can work to make play an integral part of each person’s early childhood experience.

We are excited to share a new element of "play" into
your conference experience. We all know that play
is the best learning tool for young children, and it
is an important component of work/life balance
for adults as well. We’ve created opportunities for
attendees to play throughout the conference and
around the convention center. The Hangout in
the Conference Center will be an area with several
tables and materials for playing—a great way to
take a break, informally connect with colleagues,
meet new friends and have fun.
Be on the lookout throughout the conference for
other opportunities to "play" with your friends,
colleagues and presenters.

Embracing Change: Claiming Your Inner Possibilian!
Possibility stands for that which can happen. Be it organizational
change amongst a group of Fortune 500 business executives, or strategies for
implementing a new leadership direction, the fact of the matter is: the things we work
earnestly to solve for, take place. The results become experiences for us, not only on
an individual level, but also for the whole. I held onto the belief that one day I would
become someone, until the belief gave way to a reality—birthing, what I have come to
see as possibility in action: a Possibilian was born. All it took for me to believe in myself
was for someone to reflect back to me, my potential, access to my own wholeness, a
pathway to my capacity. I invite each and every one of you to come along with me, on
this journey of exploration into the world of a child who became a woman, who refused
to be less than what her soul dictated.

In this workshop participants will examine
the alignment of common core standards
in respect to its impact on programs for
young children prior to kindergarten entry.
The participants will explore developmentally appropriate
instructional scenarios using imbedded content goals that
target school readiness and standards for preschool children
and kindergarten students respectively. This workshop
recognizes knowledge from preschool through kindergarten
as accumulated knowledge within a developmental learning
continuum. Through active play and exploration of materials the
session will demonstrate how intentional design can support
the alignment of high quality early childhood curriculum (e.g.,
California Preschool Learning Foundations, The Head Start Child
Development and Learning Framework) with the common core
state standards. The activities provide high-quality learning
experiences that engage and challenge academic and intellectual
development; and the rich language and literacy acquisition
for primary and secondary language learners. Utilizing a lessis-more approach the session fosters a culture of collaboration
and reflection using actual classroom videos documenting the
engaging effectiveness of the workshop activities. Reflective
discussions will help workshop participants to understand the
experiential learning quality of the instructional materials and
design.
Sleep is the building block of development
and learning. A growth hormone is released
in children during the beginning part of deep
sleep. If children are not getting enough quality
sleep, their physical, cognitive and emotional development is
affected. This presentation is appropriate for all ECE professionals
working with children 0-5 years and those working with parents.
A deep emphasis will be placed on development in the first three
(3) years. During this presentation, we will cover the science
behind sleep, what affect hormone development has on sleep,
how sleep and developmental milestones are connected, how
sleep influences a child’s behavior and their ability to learn, how
ECE teachers can set up a supportive nap environment and how
teachers can partner with parents to meet their child’s sleep
needs.

It’s Not Just for Big Kids: Infants and
Toddlers in the Outdoor Classroom
The outdoor classroom is a way of using the
outdoor space as intentionally as the indoor
space. It’s a belief and practice that learning
takes place as well, if not better, outside than
it does inside the classroom. The outdoor
classroom advocates for extended, quality time spent outside
each and every day. It emphasizes uninterrupted play, childdirected activities, natural elements and materials, and children
as authentic explorers and learners. During the past few years,
this idea has gained momentum in the field of early childhood
education. However, many people still see this as important
only for older children. They believe it to be unnecessary and
not feasible or safe for infants and toddlers. This is simply not
true! This workshop will give justification for, information about,

Embracing Change: Claiming Your
Inner Possibilian!
This workshop will introduce participants to I Create What
I Believe! self-awareness art activities designed to restore
emotional balance in the body, based on the work of Dr. Bruce
Lipton.
Possibility stands for that which can
happen. Be it organizational change
amongst a group of Fortune 500
business executives, or strategies for implementing a new
leadership direction, the fact of the matter is; the things we
work earnestly to solve for, take place. The results become
experiences for us, not only on an individual level, but also
for the whole. I held onto the belief that one day I would
become someone, until the belief gave way to a reality—
birthing, what I have come to see as possibility in action: a
Possibilian was born. All it took for me to believe in myself
was for someone to reflect back to me, my potential, access
to my own wholeness, a pathway to my capacity. I invite
each and every one of you to come along with me, on this
journey of exploration into the world of a child who became
a woman, who refused to be less than what her soul dictated.
