FROM THE DESK OF FATHER DAVIS:
We have often been inspired by Him throughout our lives.
His words are familiar to our ears. Our families and their
customs have been impacted by the story of His life in the
flesh. Western culture, itself, has been, in part, shaped by
the “movement” which His life set in motion. Many of the
architectural wonders of the world have sought to capture
the sentiments of our relationship to Him. Authors, poets,
song-writers, philosophers, and theologians have
published countless books, too numerous to name, about
Him and the meaning of His life for the world.
Yes; Jesus of Nazareth, is, indeed, a historical figure. Facts
from history about Him abound, and can be very
interesting. They can garner our fascination and lead us to
read and study about the “man.” More importantly,
however, followers of Jesus also see in Him the “Christ of
faith.” In Him the believing community has placed its
hopes, its deepest longings, its need for healing, and in
Him has found the impetus for conversion, redemption,
and newness of life. But this doesn’t just happen
instantaneously. While inspiration can be a powerful force
for change in our lives, belief in the Christ of faith is a
daily decision that definitively marks our lives, giving
them direction and purpose and, in short, making them
new creations.
Through a posture of openness, this can come to us like
the freshness of a springtime rain. For others, the
challenge can be so great that it is initially marked by the
cynicism of secular doubt, resistance, and even refusal.
Often times, the confrontation with the truth of Jesus and
the implications of His words can even cause fury and
rage in hearts that are closed. Notice what today’s Gospel
has described. Some of Jesus’ hearers were so filled with
indignation at His words (probably the truth and
challenge of His words) that they actively sought to
oppose, if not destroy Him. The passage says that they led
Him out of the synagogue to the brow of the town where
they intended to hurl him over the edge. Amazing how a
posture that is adamantly closed in on itself can, at times,
become wrathful, refusing to even consider, let alone
understand.
Today’s Gospel passage invites us all to examine our
response to Christ. I am sure there are moments when His
words have challenged us, stretched us, and led us to be a
bit uncomfortable. Why should the power of life-giving
words do anything different? Growth, conversion, and
transformation often are accompanied by struggle, i.e., a
struggle to comprehend, to change, and put into effect an
updated style of life. When we come to church, we are not
here to be entertained. We are here to encounter the risen
Christ in Word and Sacrament, whose presence places
“demands” on those that would embrace Him. Are you
allowing your struggles with conversion to birth new faith
and new life? Or are you allowing your lack of
understanding to lead you down the path of resistance,
refusal, and even fury. I wonder which one is more prone
to happiness now, and in the future?

AN ONGOING MISSION
In his hometown synagogue, Jesus’ neighbors
are amazed by his words. Nevertheless, they
remind each other, “Is this not Joseph’s son?”
Surely the people know who he is. The
carpenter’s son. The young man who had learned
in this very synagogue. The boy down the street.
Conflict arises as Jesus begins to define
himself in a new way. When he compares himself
to the ancient prophets Elijah and Elisha the
tensions grow. The tensions multiply when Jesus
begins to tell of a new mission for God’s people:
the good news of the scriptures is intended for all.
In his famous passage from the First Letter to
the Corinthians, St. Paul reminds us of the eternal
nature of love. Love does not come to an end. In
today’s readings, we are reminded that, like love,
Jesus’ mission cannot be contained. Jesus slips
through the crowd of persecutors and moves on to
new challenges. We are called to this same
perseverance in the name of love.
TREASURES FROM OUR TRADITION
The song of the angels, “Holy, Holy, Holy,”
resounds from our lips at every Mass. There was a
widespread belief in the first religions of the world
that God stirred creation into being by a word, a
song, a musical note. Music and a sense of God’s
presence have always been inseparable. In the
liturgy, your voice is invited into this song as the
priest names the reasons for our praise. “Heaven
and earth are full of your glory,” and we are not
passive onlookers, but participants in this glory.
Catholic prayer no longer assigns this angelic hymn
to a choir, but gives it to you to sing. Even if your
voice is thought to be suitable only for a
well-insulated shower stall, you are called into this
song.
We are born to sing—just listen to a baby
testing the full range of newly-discovered vocal
abilities. Soon we get shushed and hushed into
quiet, and given lots of messages that our voices
are unwanted, and that we need to raise our hands
in order to be heard. All of that is overturned in
liturgy, the place where God waits to hear us come
alive in the song of all creation. In heaven,
everyone’s in the choir; why not start practicing
now?

UPDATE
As a parish, we are about half way toward our annual parish goal for this year’s Archbishop Charities Drive. Envelopes are still available in the back
of church, or at the parish office, for those who
have not yet made a pledge to the ABCD. Many of
our parishioners have received a direct mailing
from the Archdiocese about this important annual
appeal. Please fill out your pledge cards and help
support your church at this once-per-year critical
moment in support of the ministries and services
of the Archdiocese of Miami. We need everyone to
step up and join in this effort. Together, one in
faith, hope, and charity, we are strong!
NEXT HEALING MASS
Our next quarterly Healing
Mass which will include the
bestowal of the Sacrament
of the Anointing of the
Sick, will take place on
Tuesday, April 23rd at
10:30am. A morning timeslot was thought to
be a helpful change to make it easier for
many of our senior and retired parishioners.
Several priests will be present to bestow the
Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick on
those who are seriously ill, approaching surgery, or burdened by the weight of years.
Please join us for the Lord’s touch.
World Day for Consecrated Life is being
celebrated in the Church this
weekend. Please pray for all
those who have made commitments in the consecrated life,
and be sure to thank them on
their special day. May they
continue to be inspired by Jesus
Christ and respond generously to
God's gift of their vocation.
Holy Hour in Defense of Life,
Marriage, and Religious Freedom
Heeding the call of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops, to pray with
special earnest during the Year of Faith,
the Church of the Little Flower will be
holding a Holy Hour and Benediction, presided over by Father
Davis, to pray for the
defense of life, marriage, and religious
freedom. The Holy
Hour will take place
in the church on
Tuesday,
February
th
19 , at 7:00pm.
All are welcome.
We invite you to attend the
13th Annual Marriage Covenant Retreat the weekend
of March 15- 17. The marriage
covenant retreat consists of a
weekend of activities, talks, and exercises to
strengthen our marriages. We cover key
topics such as God’s place in our marriage,
praying as a couple, communication, forgiveness, and family. The retreat provides a
unique opportunity to pause from daily life
and reflect on our marriages. It is also a
great way to have fun and to meet other
couples. Subsequent to the retreat, we have
monthly meetings. These meetings not only
strengthen our marriage but they are fun
and create long-lasting friendships.

priests, or deacons to bring them Holy Communion. If you know of a family member, neighbor,
or friend who is a member of the parish and cannot make it to Sunday Mass, please provide their
name and contact information to the Parish Office so we can arrange a visit.

two Masses at Saint John Bosco, so that Father Juan
Carlos will be free to be here with us on that day.

As a way to foster community and
provide a forum to get to know one
another better, “Dessert with Father
Davis” will continue throughout the
year. You bring a dessert, Father
will provide the coffee. It will be a
chance to chat, socialize, dream about parish
life, and have a delightful visit over dessert and
coffee at the rectory house. The dining room
table has limited seats; there’s only room for
ten parishioners at a time. Call Maria Elena
Chialastri to secure your space today!
Upcoming dates:
Monday, March 4th at 7:30pm.

Father Davis on this wonderful 10-day group
trip designed to inspire and enrich.

STATIONS OF THE CROSS
In an effort to make it more convenient for more parishioners to attend the
Stations of the Cross, we will have two timeslots available for Stations every
Lenten Friday of this upcoming season. The Via Crucis in Spanish will take
place on Fridays during Lent at 6:00pm. The Stations of the Cross in English
will take place on Fridays at 7:00pm. All are welcome.
NEW MONSIGNORI
This past week, Pope Benedict XVI honored seven priests of the
Archdiocese of Miami with the new title of “Monsignor,” as well as one
priest, already a monsignor, with the highest level of monsignorial papal
honors, the “Protonotary Apostolic Supernumerary.” Some of the priests
you may well already know: Monsignor Jude O’Doherty, P.A.,
Monsignor James Fetscher, Monsignor Jose Hernando, Monsignor Edmund White, Monsignor Roberto Garza, Monsignor Chanel Jeanty, V.G,
Monsignor George Puthuseril, J.V., and Monsignor Juan Quijano.
Congratulations to our local Miami priests for their service and recognition by the Holy Father.
We are happy to announce that
Archbishop Wenski is scheduled to be
at the Church of the Little Flower for
the Confirmation of our eighth graders
on Thursday, February 28th, at 7:00pm.
EASTER EGG HUNT
This coming Easter Sunday,
March 31st, we will bring back an
old and revered custom of having
an Easter Egg hunt for the children on Easter Sunday morning
after the 9:00am and 10:30am Masses. All
children under the age of ten will be invited
to come over to the Priest House Rectory
yard and search for some sweet Easter Eggs
and treats. The Easter Egg Hunt will be organized by the Office of Youth Ministry and
members of our high school Gaudium Leadership Team.
The Daughters of Isabella will NOT be meeting
on Monday, February 11th. The Annual Memorial Mass will be taking place on Sunday, February 10th at St. Thomas the Apostle Church and
the monthly meeting will immediately follow at
the Elks Lodge. Please contact Pat del Torro for
more information or to RSVP.

Cuarto Domingo del Tiempo Ordinario
3 de febrero de 2013
Ahora tenemos estas tres virtudes:
la fe, la esperanza, y el amor;
