Job Descriptions
Job Postings and Recruitment
Roberta Diegel, MT Department of Labor
The job market has changed dramatically over last few
years but it hasn’t made recruitment any easier. Although
your vacancies may now receive many more applicants,
ensuring that you actually attract the right candidates can
be a major challenge. Evaluate your recruitment options,
write effective job advertisements, and avoid unlawful
discrimination in recruitment.

MGMT 9099C
Interviewing and Selection
Denise Grabowski, North Valley Hospital
Ensure that the people you select are the best fit for the
jobs you need to fill. Making poor hiring decision (and
keeping bad hires) based on deficient interviewing skills
costs companies millions of dollars every year. And
the same goes for untrained supervisors asking illegal
questions in the interview. Identify and use the tools
and techniques to interview and select both legally and
efficiently to find the right talent for your organization.

MGMT 9099D
On-Boarding and Orientation
Ronda Gress, Nomad Global Communication Solutions
Ensure your employees hit the ground running – toward
productivity and success! Learn the elements of an
effective orientation that establishes clear expectations
and connects the new employee to key resources. With an
immediate understanding of your organizational values,
formal and informal practices, and pertinent contacts,
your employees will start their work with confidence and

Performance Appraisals
Ronda Gress, Nomad Global Communication Solutions
The appraisal process need not cause dread. There are
many ways to effectively provide necessary feedback to
employees about their performance. Your performance
appraisal process should not only facilitate continuous
performance improvement but also build a climate of
trust and improved morale. Both informal and formal
appraisal provide employees feedback, ensure clarity
regarding work expectations and standards and leads
to strategic goal planning.

Performance Management and Progressive
Discipline
Ronda Gress, Nomad Global Communication Solutions
Sometimes the performance appraisal is not enough.
Progressive discipline leads you to first explore reasonable
explanations for the problem such as lack of training,
inadequate knowledge or circumstances beyond the
employee’s control. You have the opportunity proceed
gradually to try to correct behavior and improve job
performance. Learn to apply progressive discipline fairly
and consistently, identify laws and policy requirements
affecting discipline, conduct effective disciplinary
meetings and document disciplinary action properly.

We know your business isn’t like every other. Ask about Customized Training.
FVCC’s customized and contract training allows your business to match training to
your business goals. Are there specific topics or certifications your staff needs?
Our highly-qualified instructors and comprehensive educational resources will provide
your employees with relevant training in the areas that are crucial to you and the
success of your organization.
Your training objectives might be as straight-forward as holding one of our regular
business workshops for just your employees, and/or at your business site and/or at a
specific time. Or, you might not see specifically what you had in mind. Then, we should
talk about your particular training objectives and create just the right curriculum.
Let us match your business training objectives with a skilled faculty member or industry
trainer – call or email Jodi Smith, Workforce Training Director, (406) 756-3833 or

Denise Grabowski, North Valley Hospital
Such a simple but powerful too. Job descriptions are very
useful to employers, employees and job applicants…
when carefully written and kept up-to-date. Job
descriptions are essential for compliance with a number
of key employment laws, help you make good hiring
decisions and determine training and orientation
needs. In addition, good job descriptions can help
you settle grievances, minimize conflicts, and improve

Transition to Supervising
Tuesday, February 10
MGMT 9035A
It’s difficult to begin supervising a new group. It can be even
more challenging if you used to be a co-worker to people you
now supervise. This class will focus on laying the groundwork
for supervisory success by exploring different management
styles, setting appropriate expectations, and learning four
habits that make a great “boss.”
Communication Tools
Thursday, February 12
MGMT 9035M
Whether you are talking to your supervisor, an employee, a
member of your family, or even your pet, the key to getting
your desired result is the ability to communicate well. Learn
how thinking and processing styles impact communication;
practice listening actively and asking questions effectively; and
learn the keys to talking like a performance coach.
Keys to Conflict Management
Tuesday, February 17
MGMT 9035H
The number one challenge of most supervisors – handling
conflict in their teams and with their staff! This class will
equip you with the knowledge and skill to resolve conflicts
effectively. We will discuss key elements of conflict resolution
and consider multiple techniques for guiding contentious
situations to positive outcomes.
A Culture of Accountability
Thursday, February 19
MGMT 9035O
Most of us have experienced the word “accountability” as a
punishment for not doing something correctly, on time or up
to standards. When laying blame is entrenched in a culture,
accountability lurks at the back end of the process. Learn
to lead with accountability at the front end of interactions
to clarify goals, establish expectations, build confidence
and achieve your desired results. Discover the steps and
language of accountability and leave with your action plan
for implementation.
Performance Coaching
Tuesday, February 24
MGMT 9035P
Do you want to improve the overall performance and
productivity for your staff? Do you wish for your employees to
enhance their skills and meet performance goals but also find
their work rewarding and still respect you? Learn a step-by-step
approach to performance coaching. Performance coaching is
valuable because it provides much faster feedback than the
traditional performance review processes and therefore can
produce faster results, often without the need for “negative”
feedback or disciplinary actions.

Time
Management
Thursday, March 5
MGMT 9035C
There are never enough hours in the day . . . especially as a
supervisor! This class will focus on strategies you can use
to maximize your work time to feel productive and reduce
stress. We will discuss the art of delegation and also consider
time drains that sneak on to every supervisor’s calendar.
Supporting Change
Tuesday, March 10
MGMT 9035N
Would you like to see changes happen more quickly
or at least more efficiently in your organization? By
understanding typical human reactions to change you can
communicate to reduce misunderstandings and anxiety,
help your change initiative gain acceptance more quickly,
and minimize lost productivity and decreased performance.
Understand the cycle of change, discuss attachment to
status quo, learn strategies for communicating change and
improve your personal change skills.
Creating Strong Teams
Thursday, March 12
MGMT 9035I
The best way to get the most from your staff is to form
a cohesive unit that works together for the benefit of the
organization. Easier said than done – right? This class will
focus on steps you can take to help your team connect with
each other and start working together.
Developing a Leadership Mindset
Monday, March 16
MGMT 9035J
The basics of supervising are just a start. Once you have a
clear idea of ways to effectively handle the challenges of
supervising, it’s time to broaden your perspective. You play
a key role in your organization to create strategy, champion
change, and visualize a profitable future for the company!

Grammar Refresher (1 session)

COMM 9027A
It’s hard to remember back to middle school, but that’s
probably when we learned about sentence fragments
and run-ons, subject-verb agreement, and the proper
use of commas, colons, and semi-colons. Often when
we write, we know what sounds and looks right,
without understanding why. Take a long lunch, and
you’ll remember the “why” of grammar. Leave with
practical and easy to remember rules for checking and
correcting sentences, verb agreement, commas, colons,
and semi-colons.
The Easy Writing System (1 session)
May 5
COMM 9028A
Whether it’s an email or a lengthy and involved report,

clear and manageable steps. Leave with a three part
system for beginning, finishing, and polishing a writing
project – adaptable for different writing tasks.
Editing Tips & Tricks (1 session)
May 12

No one wants to be responsible for a piece of writing
riddled with errors, but we often read and re-read a
document not sure what we’re even looking for. Armed
with specific editing tools, you can sign off on more
polished writing in less time. Leave with a checklist to shift
your focus from merely reading to quickly and accurately
spotting and fixing writing and grammatical errors.
