Fransabank Sustainable Energy Finance (S.E.F.) Beirut Energy Forum 2015 1 Climate change in the world 2 3 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 “Climate change is the greatest environmental threat of our time, responsible for rising sea levels, raging storms, searing heat, ferocious fires, severe drought, and punishing floods. It threatens our health, communities, economy, and national security” 5 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Earth Overshoot Day Source : Global Footprint Network ∗ August 19 was Earth Overshoot Day 2015, marking the date when humanity has exhausted nature’s budget for the year. ∗ This indicator shows the impact of human activity on the planet ecosystem and measures what is required to feed human activity. ∗ For the rest of the year, We will be operating in overshoot. We will be maintaining our ecological deficit by drawing down local resource stocks and accumulating carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. 6 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Earth Overshoot Day We need more than 1.5 Earth to answer our needs. We will need 2 Earths before 2050 where we are expected to become 9.1 bn inhabitants. Source : Global Footprint Network Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Global warming Most of global warming is caused by increasing concentrations of greenhouse gases and other human activities. During 21st century, global surface temperature is likely to rise a further 0.3 to 1.7 °C for their lowest emissions scenario 2.6 to 4.8 °C for their highest 8 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Climate change in Lebanon 9 Lebanon electricity consumption Source : World Bank Indicators In Lebanon, we over-consume electricity with an average of 3,114 KWh / inhabitant in 2012, v/s Turkey 2,794 KWh/inhabitant Jordan 2,357 KWh/Inhabitant Tunisia 1,411 KWh/ inhabitant To note that in 2014, Lebanon consumed 3,499 KWh / inhabitant 10 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Lebanon energy use While energy consumption in the world is stabilizing, Lebanon’s energy use is increasing. In 2012, Lebanon consumed 1,622 kg of oil equivalent per capita Source : World Bank Indicators 11 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Lebanon CO2 emission (metric tons per capita) 12 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Strategic National Plan for the Electricity Sector (2012) ∗ If we continue business as usual, in 2020 the Lebanese energy consumption would reach 30,000 GWh, the double of 2010’s level ∗ Alternative option would be to gradually shift to a more green scenario using less fossil energy for electricity production and increasing by the same token the recourse to renewable energy. ∗ 2020 objective is to have 12% of electricity produced from renewable energy ∗ Lebanon, by signing the Kyoto protocol in November 2006, has committed to reduce the CO2 emission ∗ Pollution in Lebanon is mostly generated by transportation (45%), industry (25%), others (30%) 13 Beirut Energy Forum 2015 Fransabank’s committment 14 Fransabank Corporate Social Responsibility Within Fransabank’s mission to create a better community and society, we have included environmental and social aspirations in our core activities.
