As we move into our summer season we are gearing up for a very exciting summer
schedule here at Sawgrass Country Club. We are scheduling an active and program filled calendar for the coming months for members of all ages. Please check
out some of these events in the social section of this newsletter and be sure to
make plans to attend.
This Summer our golf courses are scheduled for aerification from June 6th
through June 16th, then July 25th through August 4th. This will mean a disruption of play for the membership, but will allow our agronomy team to perform
the most important cultural practices in the most effective and efficient way possible. During this time, the club will be arranging with other area clubs to provide
golfing opportunities for our membership. Overall, the disruption due to aerification will be greatly reduced and the playing surfaces will recover equally resulting
in a consistent playing surface.
The support from our membership has been rewarding this year including the
many referrals we’ve received. We would like specifically to thank the members
who have referred their friends and neighbors to membership recently and all the
Ambassadors who have helped us assimilate new members to Sawgrass Country
Club. We have had membership at full capacity for over a year now, so we believe
our members can be proud of our club and how we have elevated our facilities,
programs, and services over the past few years. This is great news!!
These Ambassadors volunteer their time to introduce the club’s amenities to
our prospective members through social and sporting activities. They establish
friendships with soon-to-be members and mostly just make sure they have a good
time…It is fun to be an Ambassador at Sawgrass. They are doing it well!!
We would also like to extend our appreciation to all the committee volunteers
of Sawgrass Country Club. The committees have recently been formed for the
coming year and they are energized about their responsibility to our membership.
The purpose of the committee system is to make recommendations to the Board
of Governors and Management, provide feedback from the membership, and to
be of assistance when implementing new programs. They are also a valuable support group for our managers and act as a sounding board for their challenges and
concerns, while helping deliver the message of policy and programs to their fellow
Sawgrass Members.

Hours of Operations

Please enjoy this time of year at your club. The first five months have been
great so far with our entire club back to full operation with the opening of the Beach Club in April. The Sandbar continues to be the dining
option of choice for many members which allows us to take a more family
friendly and casual approach for our food and beverage offerings. I hope
you are taking pleasure in seeing the priorities of our Master Facilities
Plan become a reality. I know I do.
Although Sawgrass has significantly elevated our club with the opening of
the renovated Beach Club we are experiencing a higher number of issues
at the Club this month. Amongst these are the management of the Men’s
Member/Member Tournament, issues with member behavior including a physical altercation between members at the Beach Club stemming
from a dress code violation, and the turnover of several employees. All
of these incidents are disappointing and not how we wish our members
to experience their club. Management and Board are aware that expectations are high and of the importance of the enforcement of our rules
and policies to ensure the enjoyment of every member’s club experience.
While we work to resolve these issues, we appreciate your confidence.
Turtle Nesting Season began on May 1st and will extend through
October 31st. All Species of Marine Turtles are federally listed as threatened or endangered and are protected. Most of the regulations are related
to illumination and affect our club by limiting our ability to sufficiently
and safely illuminate all service areas at the Beach Club. Although the
lighting is much improved, we apologize for any inconvenience this may
cause during your visits to the club.
It is an exciting time to be a member of Sawgrass Country Club. Please
use our Comments and Concerns communication method on our club’s
website. These submissions from Comments and Concerns are delivered to all department managers and supervisors including the General
Manager. This is probably the best way to let us know how we are doing.
Don’t forget to make it a great summer season in 2016!!

Wine and Spirits
Tasting Notes
by Sawgrass Sommelier, Bo Cure
Welcome to my first edition of Tasting Notes, a
column dedicated to keeping you in the know of
all things wine and spirits at Sawgrass Country
Club. I am pleased to introduce our members to
two new wine education events!
“Wines of the World” Thursdays, June 16, July 30
We will delve into the wine making processes of
different parts of the world as we taste selections
of varietals and pair them with our chef inspired
tapas that are also from the topic region. A
guest wine expert is present for an additional
perspective and our chefs give in depth
explanations into their creations and pairings.
“Wine Trivia” Thursdays, June 30, July 21
We know you love trivia and wine, so we put the
two together to create what will be almost too
much fun! Teams of three to four members will
be seated at each table and served a sampling
of wines and tapas, answer questions while
expanding their palates and wine knowledge
as they do so. Blind tasting will also be part of
the competition, so be ready to Somm it up!
Prizes will be awarded to the first and second
place teams.
Uncorked Wine Dinners
Don’t miss our Uncorked Wine Dinners in June
as Catena wines from Argentina take center
stage and in July, the wines of Antinori will be
showcased. Both dinners will offer an eclectic
and delicious progression of wines throughout
the dinners with our chef ’s delectable pairings.
These events sell out quickly, so please, make
your reservations early.
Cheers,
Bo Cure

Jacksonville Area Golf Association ( JAGA) Fund
With the help of generous contributions by its members, Sawgrass Country Club
raised $12,040 in 2016 to support the Jacksonville Area Golf Association ( JAGA)
scholarship trust fund. JAGA is a non-profit organization dedicated to the promotion of the game of golf.
JAGA runs many golf tournaments in northeast Florida including the Jacksonville
Amateur, which will be held at Queen’s Harbor Yacht and Country Club this year.
Running tournaments is an important function of JAGA, but the most important
function is it’s scholarship trust fund. The purpose of the trust fund is to financially
support students in need who have expressed interest in any aspect of the game,
(player, administration, grounds, club management, etc). The initial scholarship
award to each student was $250 per term and has grown to $1,000 per term for up
to eight terms of undergraduate study.
JAGA is an all-volunteer organization. This means 100% of all contributions goes
to the scholarship fund. Sawgrass has been fortunate to have 21 young people reach
their goals of going to college with the help of the JAGA scholarship fund. Many
of these students have gone on to successful careers as golf course superintendents,
golf club managers, PGA golf professionals and other careers inside
and outside the golf industry.
JAGA was organized in 1954 and
has 40 golf club members. Since
its inception in 1974 the scholarship fund has awarded hundreds
of scholarships to deserving young
people totaling over $1,000,000.

Dog Tip
First of all, we want to
thank everyone for their
patience as we start our
Annual aerification schedule this month. The first
aerification is scheduled for the week of
Monday, June 6th through Thursday, June
16th. During this time all practice facilities
and the golf courses will be closed. The Golf
Shop will be open from 7:00am-4:00pm
each day. We are planning to reopen the
Practice range on June 11th so we can keep
our swings ready for the re-opening of the
course on June 17th.
We have made reciprocal arrangements at
several clubs around the area. Please contact
Assistant Golf Professional, Hank Dettlaff
for information regarding courses in the area
that have agreed to host our members during
this closure. Your options have been sent in
a recent email on fore tees and to learn more,
call the golf shop.
Over the past seasons, the club has made a
large commitment to bring the course and
its conditions in line with the finest clubs in
the Southeast. The sacrifice of extra closure
time will allow us to accomplish more of the
needed processes and also give the turf extra
time to recover without traffic.
Summertime is also the time of year we
have several activities for Juniors as well.
Our programs for the children of Sawgrass
continues to grow and it’s so exciting to see
them learning about the game of golf. There
is always room for grandchildren and even

June - August
Each month this summer, we have chosen 9 holes (East, West or
South) to host a Ringer Card Tournament. A Ringer Tournament is a
multi-round golf tournament that results in one 9-hole score per player.
The tournament works this way: Golfer plays 10 rounds, and posts
their scores on each hole per round. The lowest of each round’s scores
per hole are recorded will represent the final score. The more rounds
you play, the better your chances!

Golf Course Summer Aerification
Golf Course Closure Dates
Monday, June 6-Wednesday, June 16
Monday, July 25-Thursday, August 4
Aerification is very necessary to ensure the
long-term health and playability of our turf.
We understand how much of an inconvenience
this closure can be for those who wish to play
golf during this time. Over the past three seasons, the club has made a large commitment
to bring the golf course in line with the finest
clubs in the Southeast. The expectation for
playability and detail has increased in conjunction with the renovations.
To ensure conditions equal to or better than the
best in the area, the following must be done:
• Vertical mowing, mowing, aerifying, rolling, and
sand topdressing of the greens
(2.5 days)
• Aerifying, vertical mowing, mowing, and blowing
off of the fairways
(3 days)
• Vertical mowing, aerifying, rolling, mowing, and
blowing off of tees and approaches
(3 days)
While much of the aerifying will be accomplished in the first seven days of closure, the
clean-up process will take a significant portion of the second week. Any sacrifice in
closure time will lead to a course with a significant amount of debris, plugs, and overall
poor playing conditions. In order to expedite
the processes, additional equipment will be
rented, contractors will be hired to assist, and
temporary labor will be brought on board.
This closure time will allow the maintenance
department to accomplish more of the needed
processes and will reduce further disruption to
play. The additional closure time will also give
the turf extra time to recover without traffic.
This will lead to better playing conditions once
play resumes.
• Aerifying of the roughs
(7 days)
• Sand topdressing of the fairways
(8 days)
• Cleaning up all debris from above processes
(4 days)
• Bunker maintenance and adjustment of sand levels
(4 days)
• Fertilizing, mowing, blowing, and readying the golf
course for reopening
(4 days)
The aerification process is disruptive to the turf
and the golf experience in the short term, but it
is very important to protect the long term playability of the course. To provide an outlet for
play the golf professional staff will be making
arrangements with other area clubs. The Golf
Maintenance Department thanks you for your
understanding and support and we look forward to returning the course to you in the best
shape possible.
