Second Christmas Day
“BOXING DAY,” December 26th
The English have many unique customs
associated with the celebration of the Lord’s
Birth. One such custom is “Boxing Day” celebrated on the 26th of December, or as the medieval
Christian community called it “Second Christmas
Day”.
If the writers of TV Series “M*A*S*H*” are
to be believed, one of the customs associated
with Boxing Day is an exchange of roles between
Masters and Servants, or as in the military, an exchange of rank and duty among the officers and
the enlisted men and women. Such an exchange
produced a great deal of comedy and of course
that was the intent of the M*A*S*H* program.
But consider for a moment, the Lord of all
creation comes to earth in the form of the lowliest of all mankind. He who is the Creator of all
merely by a word, now becomes the most helpless of mankind as an infant baby in need of
every human help.
He who is the Lord and King of all was not to
be found in the palace of kings, but among the
lowliest of God’s animals in a stable as His place
of birth.
This is at the beginning of His life of “humiliation” as Christians for centuries have confessed
in the Creed: ‘Conceived by the Holy Spirit, Born
of the Virgin Mary, Suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried’. Not exactly
what one would expect for the Lord of all creation.
Can you grasp the connection between Boxing
Day and the birth of Christ? It is as Luther called it
“The Great Exchange”!
He, the Lord of Creation, becomes the lowest
of the low that I a lowly sinner might become a
Lord!
In the birth, life, death and resurrection of
Jesus, we see a true ‘rags to riches’, or ‘servant to
Lord’ story and we also see the opposite.
Jesus came to offer His holy life as substitute
for sinners. You are a sinner; He is innocent, yet
it is He who bears the burden of sin. It is Jesus
who pays the penalty for sin, all sin, and you the
sinner go free.
So what will you do this Boxing Day, this
December 26th, The Second Christmas Day, the
Sunday after Christmas? Will there be time for
Him who came for you?
May you, the lowliest of sinners come this
Boxing Day to be served by your Lord and Master! He is prepared to serve you that day as He
is each and every Lord’s Day. Oh, do receive His
service and gifts for they are very good! May this
be a Blessed Christmas season to you as you contemplate the “Great Exchange”.
In the name of Jesus,
Pastor Froh
