Armenian Cultural Month
October is Armenian Cultural Month. During this month, Armenians everywhere will
celebrate this event by paying tribute to all
those who have unselfishly dedicated themselves to the preservation of the Armenian language and culture.
This traditional celebration has its roots in
the commemoration of the Feast of the Holy
Translators, whose central figure is St. Mesrob
Mashdots, known as the first translator and
teacher of the Armenian language.
St. Mesrob Mashdots’ divinely-inspired efforts resulted in our own alphabet and literature, thus enabling our church and nation to
survive, down through the centuries. Without
these, the Armenian nation would surely have
been lost in assimilation.
Far from the motherland and dispersed all
over the world, Armenians cherish their greatest treasures, the Armenian church and the Armenian school. In these two institutions, our
younger generation will learn their mother
tongue to help perpetuate our existence.
The immortal spirit of Mesrob Mashdots remains in the hearts of the Armenian people.
Keep that spirit in your hearts with love so that
the language and the nation will also live
within you. Raise your children in the spirit of
Armenian christian traditions, making them
worthy followers of Mesrob Mashdots.
Blessed be the memory of our immortal
translators.
Blessed be those who sacrificed all for the
survival of the Armenian Church and Nation.

Biography
Saint Mesrop Mashtots (Armenian:
"Մեսրոպ Մաշտոց", W. Armenian pronounced Mesrob Mashdots) (360 - February 19,
440) was an Armenian monk, theologian and
linguist. He was born in the town of Hatsekats
in Taron.
Saint Mesrob is best known for having invented the Armenian Alphabet, which was a
fundamental step in strengthening the Armenian Church, the government of the Armenian
Kingdom, and ultimately the bond between
Armenians in the Armenian Kingdom, the
Byzantine Empire, and the Persian Empire. He
is also traditionally believed to have invented
the Georgian alphabet but this belief does not
stand up to scientific scrutiny. In Georgia the
credit is usually given to King Farnavaz. According to the Matenadaran, a monument and
museum in Yerevan dedicated to Mesrob
Mashdots, he also invented the Caucasian Albanian alphabet and even the Ethiopian one as
well.
He is buried in Oshagan Church, a village of
the same name 8 km southwest from Ashtark
Town.

2001 QUESTIONS AND ANSWERS
Why do we use pictures of Saints in the
Church?
The Body of Christ (the Church), consists of
Militant and Victorious Churches i.e. of those
members who are physically alive and “fight
the good fight”, and of those who “have
fought” and sleep in Christ. By using the picture of saints, we acknowledge their spiritual
presence among us.
Why do we pray to the Saints?
to worship other Oriental gods, even at the
dawn of their deliverance from Egypt the
Promised Land. When we use images of saints
WE DO NOT WORSHIP THEM as gods, but
we respect them as the servants of God, who
empowered with the Holy Spirit, carried their
own cross and encourage us in our sacred journey to do so. As St. Paul says: “Be imitator of
me, as I am of Christ” (I Cor. 11:1).
THANKSGIVING
Blessed is the Lord.
Christ who is sacrificed is being distributed
among us. Alleluia.
Prayer is the most powerful means of the believer to create a spiritual relationship with
his/her Creator and with human beings. It
transcends even death itself. By praying to the
saints we express our oneness in Christ.
He gives us His Body for food, and He imbues
us with His Holy Blood. Alleluia.
By praying to them, don’t we neglect Christ as
our sole Intermediator?
O taste and see how sweet is the Lord.
Alleluia.
By praying to the Saints we do not acknowledge them as our savior, but we ask them, as
we ask our friends, to pray with us and for us
to our Savior Lord Jesus Christ. Likewise, when
we pray to St. Mary the Holy mother of God,
the Church’s standpoint is clear that she is
praying for us to our God: “Glorified and
blessed ever holy Virgin, Bearer of God, Mary,
mother of Christ, OFFER OUR SUPPLICATIONS TO THY SON AND OUR GOD.”
Doesn’t the reverence to the images contradict
God’s commandment?

Chicago Holds Rally in Support of SyrianSyrian-Armenians
Chicago Armenians raised nearly $10,000 at a
rally held on Saturday, September 29 in support of Syrian Armenian Relief. Organized by
the Chicago “Christapor” ARF Gomideh, with
the participation of nine community organizations and churches, the rally was held at Shahnasarian Hall in the All Saints Community
Center.

Master of Ceremonies Armen Papazian welcomed the crowd and invited the Homenetmen Scouts to perform the presentation of the
colors ceremony and the singing of the U.S.
and Armenian national anthems. Archpriest Fr.
Zareh Sahakian was invited to deliver the invocation.
In his opening remarks, Papazian noted that
although the event was intended to be a celebration of the ARF’s 122nd anniversary, the
“Christapor” Gomideh—determining that the
deteriorating situation and endangerment of
the Armenian community in Syria required an
immediate response by the Chicago community—instead dedicated the event to Syrian Armenian Relief.
Vasken Aivazian was then invited to give a
brief history of the Armenian community in
Syria. He noted some of the many contribu6

Celebrating The Church Anniversary
The 69th anniversary of the Armenian All
Saints Apostolic Church was celebrated on
Sunday, November 4. The day began with an
Episcopal Divine Liturgy celebrated by the
Prelate, His Eminence Archbishop Oshagan
Choloyan. Assisting at the altar was Archpriest
Fr. Zareh Sahakian, pastor of All Saints
Church, deacons and acolytes.
After his fatherly blessings to the parishioners in the attendance, the Archbishop gave his
sermon on the "My mother and my brothers
are those who hear the word of God and do it.
" (Luke 8:21) He elaborated by saying that
there is two kinds of families in the Christian
belief "one on earth and one in heaven."
The celebrations continued with a banquet at
Shahnasarian Hall. The master of ceremonies,
Mr. Artin Dermenjian, welcomed everyone on
behalf of pastor and board of trustees. In his remarks, he said that anniversaries are observed
every year as reminders for our obligations and
commitments to our church. He continued by
saying lets continue our cooperative efforts and
dedication for the betterment, expansion and
preservation of our church and community
center. Then he invited Mike Demirjian,
Chairman of the Board of Trustees. Mr. Demirjian addressed the crowd and connected the
Church as the central artery for community
life, supporting its spiritual growth and the development of sister organization.
His Eminence and the pastor joined the
chairman to recognize the outgoing member of
the Board of Trustees Mr. Raffi Dekirmenjian
and presented him with a Certificate of Merit.
Also recognized were Mr. Dro Kholamian, and
Mr. Berj Papazian, for their tireless work, con14
tinued service and their dedication to the
church and community center.
In his remarks, Archpriest Fr. Zareh congratulated the parishioners for their relentless
and honest efforts. He also recognized the Ladies Guild for the scrumptious luncheon on
this occasion and the organizing committee
headed by Mrs. Susan Chitjian Erickson.
In his closing remarks, His Eminence reminded everyone that in celebrations of anniversaries we should always remember our forefathers who had the vision to recognize both
the spiritual and social needs of the Armenian
community by establishing churches and community centers. The church can't survive without community organizations and community
organizations can't survive without church. I'm
very proud that you have recognized the cooperative spirit of "With each other, for each

how, unlike in Libya where the Western powers took a direct and active role in the overthrow of Qadaffi, in Syria the U.S. worked
through proxies, notably Turkey, Saudi Arabia,
and Qatar. He noted that this battle was seen
not solely for gaining control of Syria, but as an
attempt to reduce Iran’s influence in the region.

Torikian added that while some Armenians
had decided to support the Free Syrian Army,
and others sided with the Assad government,
the vast majority of Armenians have tried to
stay neutral, attempting to emulate the position of the Lebanese-Armenian community
during Lebanon’s civil war. He also explained
that the Free Syrian Army—heavily influenced
by Turkey—is viewed with suspicion by many;
the army contains, for example, an “Ataturk”
Brigade and even an “Enver Pasha” brigade.
He went on to discuss how, until recently,
many Armenians were fairly well removed
from the fighting, which occurred primarily
outside of Aleppo. As the fighting has begun to
reach Armenian neighborhoods in Aleppo,
however, Armenian organizations have mobilized to help address the critical needs of the
community, including food distribution.
Torikian’s comments were followed by a brief
question and answer session.
Papazian then invited “Christapor” Gomideh
representative Greg Bedian to provide closing
remarks. Bedian began by reiterating some of
the many contributions of the Syrian-Armenians to the Armenian nation. He noted how
Syrian-Armenians had provided aid to Armenians during the Lebanese Civil War; to Armenia
following the earthquake and the Arstakh liberation struggle; and how they had sheltered
Iraqi Armenians during the two wars in Iraq
and the chaos that followed. Bedian concluded
his remarks and began the fundraising portion
of the program by stating that it was the Chicago community’s turn to give assistance to the
Syrian-Armenian community, to demonstrate
our solidarity, and provide them with both the
moral and financial support that they need.
Participating organizations in the Syrian Armenian Relief rally included the Armenian All

Church of Chicago, Armenian General Benevolent Union Chicago Chapter, Armenian
National Committee of Illinois, Armenian Relief Society “Zabelle” Chapter, Armenian

Yerevan: Still Going Strong After 2794 Years
Capital Yerevan celebrated its historical
2794th anniversary to the full. Despite its old
age, the city had never looked so happy and
young as “she” did yesterday. The city was
filled with joy and laughter combined with the
amazement and admiration of the locals whose
expectations were more than exceeded.
The start of “Erebuni-Yerevan” celebration
events was given early in the morning when
the watering trucks started washing all the Yerevan administrative districts. Parallel with that
the statues and monuments of Yerevan city
were washed and cleaned. The cleaning of the
monuments was carried out by 80 volunteers
from different educational institutions. Among
the cleaned statues are the monuments dedicated to Vahan Teryan, Avetik Isahakyan, Martiros Saryan, Sayat-Nova, Hovhannes Tumanyan, Aram Khachaturian, Andrey Sakharov, Alexander Myasnikyan and so on.

The first of the main events was held in the
square of Erebuni Fortress Museum with the
participation of Armenian President Serge
Sarkisian, Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan,
Armenian Prime Minister Tigran Sarkisian, National Assembly Chairman Hovik Abrahamyan
and other prominent members of Armenian
Government. At the square the theatrical performance of the foundation of Erebuni and its
entire course of development up to the present
days was held.
Later that day Yerevan Mayor Taron Margaryan took part in the celebrations held in
Russia square, where a unique art performance
was organized. Yerevan mayor congratulated
all the participants saying,“I congratulate all of
us on the occasion of our capital’s anniversary.
Happy Birthday, capital of my heart! Happy
Birthday, Yerevan!"
Hamazkayin ‘Sardarabad’ Dance Ensemble Evolves to Eminence

It feels like just yesterday that the Hamazkayin “Sardarabad” Dance Ensemble of Chicago
had its first practice in the Shahnazarian Hall
at the All Saints Community Center in Glenview, Ill. On the evening of Oct. 13, the talented group put on an unforgettable first performance that warmed the hearts of the audience in a show dubbed “Dreams of My Land.”
Each dancer embodied the mighty strength,
pride, and unity of the Armenian nation, as
friends and family members sat enthralled.
Mr. Thomas Ohanian had commenced the
program by welcoming the audiance and inviting Chapter's Chairman Mr. Harout Mikaelian,
who in turn shared a summary of Hamazkayin
Chicago Chapter's and its Sardarabad Dance
Ensemble rich history. Later, Mr. Hakob Melkonyan took the stage to share remarks from
Hamazkayin Eastern Region office.
The traditional “Pert Bar” warmed up the
crowd for the different styles of Armenian
dance ahead that night. As the curtain slowly
opened, a two-tier pert (fort, in Armenian) was
turned by both female and male dancers. Other
traditional dances included the gracefully constructed all-female dance “Lori,” and the
strength-defining “Kochari,” performed by the
male dancers, which included members from
the Detroit Hamazkayin “Arax” Dance Ensemble.
In addition to the historic dances performed,
a unique touch of Chicago style was portrayed
throughout the more contemporary pieces. The
second part of the show opened with an illuminating display of flashing lights, accompanied
by the striking and dramatic melodies of Ara
Gevorgyan’s “Dzovitz Dvoz.” A violet horizon
of light casted the background as the dancers’
silhouettes set the stage for one of the group’s
favorite and original choreography.
The Detroit Hamazkayin “Arax” Dance Ensemble paid a special tribute to the show. In
addition to the powerful and mighty “Kochari,”
the dancers showcased their strong will and
character through the celebratory dance
“Donagan,” along with the traditional dance of
Van, titled “Varaka Lerni Bar.”
Exemplifying the virtue and power of the
homeland, crimson dresses flooded the stage
with the crowd-pleasing end performance of
“Hzor Hayasdan.” With each move, the dancers represented the strong pride and vitality of
the Armenian nation.
The Chicago “Sardarabad” has already performed at a wide range of events throughout
the community. Just a week before this big
performance, the older dancers performed two
numbers at an Armenian-Assyrian wedding,
promoting the tradition and culture of Armenian folk dance to a different group of people.
A little over a year ago, the group also participated in aid for the Armenian Relief Mission in
an effort to raise money for orphaned children
in Armenia. The dancers performed an original
dance choreographed by Dance instructors
Houri Papazian and Sona Birazian for an audience comprised of mostly non-Armenians.
Founder Steve Kashian and his wife, Rozik,
were more than pleased with the groups’ accomplishment for carrying out such a significant cause.
A great deal of cooperation and preparation
was required for the performance to be a success. The Chicago “Sardarabad” chapter extends
