SPARK DOWNTOWN!
By: Breanne Durham, Executive Director
The spirit of entrepreneurship is extremely
important to any downtown district. Local
entrepreneurs are the heart and soul of Main
Street! That’s why we were so excited about
Avista’s entrepreneurship program (see our
June 2012 newsletter for details), why we
partner with the Idaho Small Business Development Center, and why we support local
school programs focused on entrepreneurship. Well, we’re taking our love of entrepreneurs one step further with our new Spark
Downtown program!
The program kicks off this week with a
business plan competition (deadline is
October 5; see our website for more details).
In October the BDL Economic Restructuring
committee, made up of business develop-
ment, downtown real estate, financial
management, and marketing professionals, will select a winner from the pool of
applicants. The Spark Downtown winner will have the opportunity to try their
business plan in a real-world setting,
rent-free for two months! That’s right—
we are giving the winner of the business
plan competition free rent in a downtown storefront for all of November and
December!
During those two months, BDL will
help the Spark Downtown winner establish their temporary business
(sometimes referred to as a “pop-up
shop”) through volunteer participation
(getting the storefront ready for the business) and promotional activities including an opening-day reception and inclusion in BDL events, such as Shop
Downtown.
There are three potential outcomes, any/
all of which will help bring positive
attention to downtown Lewiston:
 A buzz is created downtown as the
community visits Main Street to
check out the “pop-up shop”
 The entrepreneur has such a positive response from the two month
experience that they decide to open
up shop permanently
 The formerly vacant storefront is
transformed into a useable facility
that another entrepreneur may visit
during the two months and decide is
ideal for their business
Whatever the outcome, we are so excited to launch this new program and see
hopeful entrepreneurs come forward to
apply for this unique opportunity. We
would appreciate any word-of-mouth
help you can give us to promote the
business plan competition phase of the
program, as a strong pool of applicants
will yield the greatest chance of success!

Do you know how beautiful
Main Street in downtown
Lewiston is at 6:00 AM on a
late August Saturday? The
Lewiston’s Hot August Nights
Committee does, because that
is when we start the day…..and
it only gets better.
The 2012 edition of the Hot
August Nights Cruise and
Show & Shine was a huge success! We had more cars in the
cruise, more cars in the show &
shine and by all accounts more
people downtown.
When BDL took over responsibility for the cruise and show
and shine last year, to say we
were hurried is an huge understatement. So the 2012
edition was much better in
many ways.
The LHAN committee is absolutely one of the hardest
working committees that I
have ever been associated
with, and it shows. It is tribute to how committed people
are to Beautiful Downtown
Lewiston.
The comments we received
from participants, vendors
and spectators about how
much they enjoyed the entire
thank you!
weekend makes all the
hard work very rewarding.
I would like to thank all the
volunteers from the different
community organizations that
help us; without them, we
couldn’t host this event.
There are so many people and
organizations to thank, there
is no way I could do it and
not miss someone. So thank
you all for the success of
Lewiston’s Hot August
Nights, we are looking forward to an even bigger and
better one next year.
Once again, the Lewiston’s Hot
August Nights committee put an
incredible amount of energy and
time to produce one of the biggest
annual events in our community.
Thank you to this fantastic group of
volunteers!

VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT:
Lisa Jones
As Director of LCSC Center for Arts & History and
Continuing Education & Community Events, Lisa Jones
could easily say that her community involvement dance
card is full. Yet, she still finds time in her busy schedule
to volunteer for Beautiful Downtown Lewiston in a variety of capacities (get ready for this—there’s a list):
Lisa is the chair for BDL’s Economic Restructuring
Committee (the group that is currently working on both
the Spark Downtown program and the It’s a Good Sign!
campaign, both of which are featured in this newsletter),
partner in the upcoming Downtown Art Walk event, and a member of the Downtown
Streetscape Initiative (which recently selected over 20 art pieces for the Fifth Street rebuild).
“I want to see our downtown thrive and be an exciting place for residents and visitors,” says
Lisa. “I also like the idea of being a part of a really positive change and growth in downtown
Lewiston. Growth doesn’t happen on its own. By volunteering, I am able to do more than just
say what I want to see happen – I can help make it happen. That is very exciting to me.”
We are certainly glad that Lisa shares our vision for downtown! Paired with her work ethic and
understanding that it takes community to create the downtown district we all dream of, she is
one of BDL’s most dedicated and visionary volunteers!

SIDELINES GRILLE NOW OPEN FOR BUSINESS!
A new venture by Jay Starnes, owner of downtown businesses such as Boomtown American Saloon, Boomers Garden, and the Candy Store, is now open for business at 514 Main Street. Located right next to Boomtown (in fact, it’s connected to the bar), Sidelines Grille features a full menu
that includes bite size, quesadillas, Philly cheesesteaks, French dips, even calamari.
“Sidelines is much more than just a place that serves bar food,” says Starnes. “During the day,
families can bring their kids here for lunch or dinner, then later in the night it turns into more of a
lounge with specialty drinks and food served until 2 a.m.”
Sidelines’ new bartender specializes in fresh fruit, exotic cocktails (we hear they have fresh mint
mojitos and a blackberry drink called The Darkenss!).
Because Boomtown and Sidelines are under the same roof, both businesses are accentuated. Customers can order food from Sidelines
while they’re sitting in the open air deck at Boomtown. Starnes sees the two businesses as a social hub where people can come for dinner and stay for drinks, sports games (on their NINE flat screen televisions!), or dancing!
Sidelines Grille open at 11 a.m. daily. Sidelines is a sports-themed restaurant that is also a non-smoking venue.
TD&H ENGINEERING MOVES TO MAIN STREET
TD&H, a consulting engineering firm offering a full range of services in Montana, Washington,
and Idaho, recently moved its Lewiston office from 17th Street to downtown Lewiston. They
moved into their new digs (fully remodeled interior and façade work, plus new signage!) right
next to Northwest Media (a media division of TD&H Engineering) on August 25th.
In addition to moving their Lewiston office, TD&H Engineering has also recently merged with
Progressive Engineering Group. The combined staff of 20 professionals, now all under one roof,
are making themselves at home on the 200 block of Main Street. Many of the same crew that restored the side of the Pinch Building that houses Northwest Media got together again to work on
the stunning new office space for TD&H, so it’s worth your time just to see the incredible work
that went into making their new space both functional and striking.
LEWISTON ROUNDUP PARADE
" et ready for the 78th Annual Lewiston Roundup Parade on Main Street in downtown Lewiston!
G
The theme this year is: Vintage Chaps and Cowboy Hats…The True Western Way."
Arrive early for the best seat in the house, and stay late for lunch, shopping, and free family day
activity at the LCSC Center for Arts & History. Businesses, make sure you’re offering Roundup
specials on Saturday to welcome the crowd into your shops!
You can also visit the judge’s booth to say “howdy” to BDL Board President Angela VanTassel
and Executive Director Breanne Durham, who will be official parade judges this year!
Saturday, September 8, 2012 9:59 a.m. Visit www.lewistonroundup.com for more information.
FIFTH STREET UPDATE
From Laura VonTersch, City of Lewiston Community Development Director:
Sidewalks have been poured on Fifth between “D” and Main. By Friday, you can see what the
finished product will look like both color and pattern. Extra precautions will be taken to button
up the construction sites in preparation of the parade and roundup visitors.
Work should be starting on the front of the RV part store in the next week.
Remember the coordination meeting with the contractors is Thursday mornings, 8:00 am at the
Bell Building (215 “D” Street). You are always welcome to come and share any thoughts or concerns you may have.
COMMITTEE COMMENTS
Organization is pursuing a change in non-profit status from a 501
(c)6 to a 501(c)3, which will allow BDL members and sponsors to
list their generous contributions as tax-deductible. A volunteer
program sponsor has been secured, so the committee will now be
able to start planning volunteer recognition activities, including
volunteer t-shirts and quarterly appreciation events. The committee is also planning BDL’s first fundraiser event for Feb. 2013.
Design is finalizing work on design guidelines for downtown.
Included in this document, which will be available to downtown
property owners upon completion, will be suggestions on
streetscape elements, awnings, color palette, use of historic materials, and more. The committee has also been working on a incentive plan to create a cohesive look amongst signage used by businesses.
Economic Restructuring is pursuing follow-up information and
visits with property owners in the downtown corridor. Regional
businesses have been visited and given information about opportunities in downtown Lewiston; follow-up contacts are now being
made. The committee recently launched the Spark Downtown
business plan competition and is excited to start receiving applications. They also planned the It’s a Good Sign! campaign.
Promotions is wrapping up a busy summer full of events. Alive
After 5, the Lewiston Farmers Market (which continues through
September) and Lewiston’s Hot August Nights all saw growth this
summer and accomplished the goal of bringing people to downtown Lewiston. The committee continues on with a busy Autumn:
Downtown Art Walk on Sept. 28, Dine Downtown (restaurant
week) Sept. 28-Oct. 6, and Pumpkin Palooza on Oct. 20. Join us!
