The architects’ vision was to create an exciting
amalgam from the numerous facets of Roppongi,
including its past and future, town and nature, life and
people. The façade epitomizes minimalist modernity,
with its sharp, straight, vertical lines, harmonizing
with the new art center that Roppongi has become.
The glass façade acts like a mirror, reflecting the sky’
s ever-changing moods. The exterior connects with
the Kabukimon Gate and stone walls in neighboring
Roppongi Nishi Park, creating a vivid contrast.

Roppongi’s history extends back to the Edo Period, when
it began as a town of temples and samurai homes. In
postwar Japan, the area was home to a US military base,
mansions
which launched its development as an international city. In
the late 1950s and early 1960s, Roppongi became known
as a meeting place for progressive adults. The Arc Hills
development opened in 1986, as Japan’s phase of rapid
economic growth turned into an economic bubble. Roppongi
has seen further development in each subsequent era,

The design of the façade merges
the building naturally into the
t o w n s c a p e w h i l e ex u d i n g i n n o v a t i o n .
Roppongi and the people who gather and live there have
developed an extraordinary degree of sensitivity. In light
of this, we thought long and hard about the most suitable
design for a “Roppongi address.” We decided on a design
imbued with the cutting-edge spirit of the town while not
being excessively decorative. We selected architecture that
blends easily with nature and respects the appearance and
history of the area, while still expressing uniqueness. These
ideas, which may at first glance seem contradictory, were
merged to shape BRANZ Roppongi.

The elements required to create a modern, yet elegant
“Roppongi residence” are this type of skilled craftsmanship
and an attractiveness that does not fade. To achieve this,
the walls are covered with rich-textured white 45 x 145mm
tiling. Combined with matte coloring, this creates a subtle
atmosphere and a sense of refinement. Because it is
located in the city center, we want the residence to exude
a sense of tranquility. We worked intensely to incorporate
this idea into the design.

One of the conditions for ensuring that the structure of BRANZ Roppongi
would give residents no cause for concern was to choose a foundation
construction method that suited the soil. As a result of test bores drilled at
five locations on the site to examine soil quality, the Kazusa formation was
used as the support layer when the foundations were built (see illustration).

BRANZ Roppongi is built on “pile foundations,” which are driven into solid
ground and bear the structure’s weight. The piles reach a strong support layer
(with an N value of at least 50) around 30m below the surface. A total of 54
piles standing on this resistance layer give solid support to the building.

Soil structure in the Roppongi area, where there is virtually no risk of "liquefaction"
The site is located in the Yodobashi-dai Plateau, which is part of the Musashino-daichi Plateau
in the southern part of the Kanto Plain. Liquefaction in the area is regarded as highly unlikely,
as below the topsoil layer lies a stable foundation layer (diluvial formation), laid down between
10,000 and 2 million years ago.
