GRIEFSHARE
ST. VINCENT DE PAUL
Wednesdays
GriefShare is a bereavement support group
open to anyone in our community or parish.
The group meets on Wednesdays, 7:00-8:45
p.m.
An IHM parishioner has pledged up to $7,500 to match donations made to the
IHM St. Vincent de Paul Conference for the month of March! This is a great
opportunity to practice Lenten almsgiving and double the impact of your gift
through our benefactor's generous match. The IHM SVdP Conference serves
the poor in our area throughout the year--the clothing drives, food drives, the
Thanksgiving Dinner program and the Christmas Giving Tree program. And,
IHM SVdP Caseworkers visit people in need in their homes to make a personal
connection, pray with them, and assess their needs. Most clients need help with
utilities or rent, so the IHM Conference uses your donations to help clients stay
in their homes, keep the heat and lights on and the water running.

This Sunday, as they undergo their third and final scrutiny, the Elect of our parish
will meditate on Jesus’s most dramatic miracle: his raising of Lazarus from the
dead. They do so in the hope that, through the waters of baptism, Jesus will soon
call them forth to new life, just as he once called Lazarus forth from the tomb. In
its foreshadowing of Easter morning, the raising of Lazarus emphatically reminds
us of Christ’s power over death.
And yet it also reminds us—as does this entire Lenten season—of the necessity of
death. When he hears of Lazarus’ illness, Jesus chooses not to intervene immediately. Hard as it was for everyone to accept— including himself—Jesus allows his
friend to die, trusting in God’s greater plan. In a spiritual sense, this is what he
now asks each of us to do. Trusting in God’s transforming mercy always requires
us to let something go—to let something die. In his recent book Jesus: A Pilgrimage, Father James Martin turns his visit to Lazarus’ tomb into a meditation on all
the things he needs to leave behind: “A need to be liked, a propensity to focus on
the negative, a desire to control things. It is precisely those kinds of unhealthy patterns, unendurable yet seemingly ineradicable, that need to die, that need to be left
in the tomb. From time to time, we need to ask, ‘What part of me needs to die?’”
This is the question that we ask ourselves today, along with the Elect. For until we
are willing to die, in big or little ways, we will not be fit for resurrection.
