EXPERT HIV HEALTHCARE
AHF’s path to becoming the largest provider of HIV/AIDS
care in the U.S. began with a small group of dedicated
activists in Los Angeles in the 1980s who had a simple
humanitarian goal: give the people dying of AIDS a safe,
dignified, and compassionate place to spend their final
days. AIDS Hospice Foundation was officially established
in June 1987, and the following year the group opened
the Chris Brownlie Hospice, L.A.’s first licensed hospice
for people suffering from AIDS.
By July 1990, AHF realized that the need for specialized
medical care was fortunately outpacing the need for AIDS
hospice care, and the group changed its name to AIDS
Healthcare Foundation as its focus shifted to providing
cutting-edge medicine and advocacy, regardless of ability
to pay. Yearly in the U.S., AHF:

FIGHT FOR WHAT’S RIGHT: AHF
SPEAK OUT
Approximately 20% of those living
with HIV are not aware of their status,
which not only threatens their personal
health due to delayed treatment, but
also increases the risk of unwittingly
spreading the virus to others. AHF
offers free HIV testing through its
various locations, in addition to
hosting a multitude of testing events
nationwide. Anyone who tests positive
has immediate access to counseling
and linkage to care. A wide array of
affordable testing and treatment for
sexually transmitted infections are also
offered through AHF Wellness Centers.
The self-sustaining business model that
enables AIDS Healthcare Foundation
to provide life saving care worldwide
rests upon the nationwide collection
of Out of the Closet Thrift Stores
and AHF Pharmacy sites. Both of
these businesses funnel 96 cents of
every dollar earned into supporting
domestic and international AHF clinics,
which provide cutting edge HIV/AIDS
treatment and care regardless of ability
to pay. Out of the Closet Thrift Stores
and AHF Pharmacies are accessible to
all and fit in to any individual lifestyle.
AHF Speak Out’s devoted team of
regional mobilizers has been a driving
force in correcting social injustices
related to HIV for over a decade. Whether
it’s the passage of both city and state
laws mandating on-set condom use in
pornographic films, lobbying in the
nation’s capital for legislation to provide
universal access to care, or protesting
discriminatory treatment within statefunded entities, the Speak Out team is
unafraid to stand on the side of justice
and humanity whenever needed.
