Whatever the state of world affairs, we at Bell know at least
one truth to be self-evident—riders are an enthusiastic
bunch and they’re gonna ride come hell or high water. So
whether they’re on the thrifty program, or if they’re doin’
well, Bell has a helmet to suit.
The new Bell Vortex is a great example of a helmet
that magically straddles two worlds. On one side are`
performance and features—Velocity Flow Ventilation,
ClickRelease shield mechanism, designer graphics—nearly
as good as the top-of-the-line Bell Star. On the other side is a
Bell Powersports 2010
price that feature-for-feature, ounce-for-ounce can’t be beat. In

between is one happy rider out on the open road without a care
in the world.
And if the Vortex is still a bit too spendy, the new Bell Arrow
covers all the basics—decent ventilation, good looks, and
respectable weight—along with the quality that comes with the Bell
name all for a very reasonable price. We’ve even done a winter version—
the Arrow Snow—for the sled heads among us who won’t let anything
stand between them and the fresh powder.
And because every rider wants to look good, we’ve continued to expand the
range of graphic options to include something for everyone whether
their look is stealth dark or look-at-me bright.

Star
The Bell Star may have taken a long three years to develop,
but what’s a little time when you’re making the best? The
Star features Bell’s exclusive Velocity Flow Ventilation™
with FlowAdjust™ for amazing ventilation and temperature
control. Its extremely light TriMatrix™ Composite Shell is
sculpted into a super stable aerodynamic signature that
eliminates life and buffeting even at high speed. Finish it
off with the easy-to-use and change 3Mode Shield™ with
ClickRelease™ and you’ve got simply the best Bell ever. And
coming from the company that invented the helmet, that’s
saying a lot.

STAR
Technology
• Velocity Flow Ventilation™ system with FlowAdjust™ for maximum ventilation and temperature control
The Star features Bell’s exclusive Velocity Flow Ventilation (VFV) system that maximizes airflow. Using
advanced flow dynamics modeling, wind tunnel testing and rider trials, Bell engineers created a natural
airflow engine that literally pulls air through the internal venting system, keeping the rider cool and dry.
By opening or closing the FlowAdjust™ vents, the rider can dial in the desired amount of airflow to match
conditions.
Illustration: TopDog Illustration
The Star’s unique shape was derived from
open-cockpit auto racing designs that enhance
stability and resist lift. The truncated shape
keeps the Star calm at speed, while the sculpted
chin contours give the helmet a smooth, linear
feel when doing head checks. For track days,
the Star comes with the Track Strip, a wicker
that adds stability at speeds above 130 mph.
• Advanced aerodynamic design for exceptional stability
The Star’s unique shape was derived from open-cockpit auto racing designs that enhance stability and resists
lift. The truncated shape keeps the Star calm at speed, while the sculpted chin contours give the helmet a
smooth, linear feel when doing head checks. For track days, the Star comes with the Track Strip, an add-on
wicker that further improves stability at speeds above 130 mph.
• 3Mode Shield™ for instant on-bike shield adjustments, and ClickRelease™ for the fastest,
easiest, tool-free shield swaps ever
Bell’s 3Mode Shield allows for one-finger toggling between Lock Mode, Friction Mode
and Crack Mode. Lock Mode is the shield’s firmest and quietest setting. It not only
locks down the shield, but pulls it tightly to the gasket, creating a water-tight seal.
The Friction Mode allows the shield to be freely adjusted from fully closed to fully open and
anywhere in between. Crack Mode disengages the shield from the gasket and lifts it about
¼” to help prevent fogging, a particularly useful setting at stop lights. A quick touch of the
3Mode Lever brings the shield back into Lock Mode.
The Velocity Flow Ventilation (VFV) system
pulls air through the internal venting
system, keeping the rider cool and dry.
Removable and washable Agion®
antibacterial/antimicrobial interior
comfort liner.
ClickRelease was designed for the quickest, easiest shield swaps ever. To remove,
simply fully open the shield and depress the ClickRelease Triggers. For installation,
just align shield pivots in the fully open position and push until they click into place.
Done.
• Star shields feature Bell’s exclusive NutraFog II® anti-fog, anti-scratch and UV protected
coating. There are two types of aftermarket shields for the Star; standard shields in 11
different tints and race shields in five different tints with posts for tear-offs.
3Mode Shield™ for instant on-bike shield
adjustments, and ClickRelease™ for the
fastest, easiest, tool-free shield swaps ever.
• Super lightweight Kevlar®/carbon fiber/fiberglass TriMatrix™ Composite Shell
Bell uses a special layup of carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass to create the durable
but extremely lightweight TriMatrix Composite Shell of the Star.
Contour Cut Cheekpads for superior fit and comfort.
• Contour Cut Cheekpads for superior fit and comfort. By curve cutting the Star’s cheekpads
instead of bending a linear pad, the helmet has a more natural, comfortable feel on the face
and cheeks. One test rider described it as feeling “like the helmet floats around my head.” Not
only does it feel nice, it also helps keep the helmet stable on the head.
The lightweight TriMatrix™ Composite Shell uses a special
layup of carbon fiber, Kevlar and fiberglass to create the
durable but feathery shell of the Star.
• Removable and washable Agion® antibacterial/antimicrobial interior comfort liner.
The Star’s internal liner is made of an antibacterial/antimicrobial material and is
easily removed for washing. Reinstallation is quick and painless as well.
• Exclusive Magnafusion™ magnetic strap keeper*- New For 2010!
• Padded chin strap with D-ring closure
• Includes padded, lined Bell Helmet Bag
• Five-year warranty
Certification: Snell M2010, DOT
Sizes: XS, S, M, L, XL, XXL
Weight: 1550g
The Star’s chin vent has two stages. The upper section sends
airflow up the inside of the shield working in tandem with the
NutraFog II™ coating to keep the field of vision fog-free.

Street artist Jona Cerwinske is perhaps
best known for taking a Sharpie marker to a
Lamborghini Gallardo and drawing an amazingly
intricate freehanded design on the $200,000
supercar. And while the Lambo might break most
people’s budgets, the Bell Star Cerwinske Carbon—
the original of which was created in the same
manner—is an absolute bargain by comparison.

Rider/designer/builder extraordinaire Roland Sands
is back for another year with a pair of new helmets in
addition to his RSD C-Note Star and RSD Skulls Drifter
designs that carry over from 2009. The RSD Grunt Drifter
recalls Sands’ V-Twin of the same name while the new
Vortex will be dressed in the RSD Rose Apocalypse livery.
Chris Wood is well known for his
motorcycle helmet designs, mostly in
the form of custom-painted lids for pro
riders. And while he’s been contributing
designs to Bell for a number of years now,
his Day of the Dead Star is so impressive
we had to put him in the spotlight.
Inspired by El Dia de los Muertos—
Mexico’s All-Saint’s and All Soul’s Days
celebrations—Wood respectfully reflects
the colors, symbols and pageantry of this
great tradition in his design.
Derek Hess is a Cleveland-based
artist known for highly detailed human
form sketches from a muted color
palette. Hess’ artwork graces a number
of medium, from concert posters to fine
art pieces to human skin—his designs
appear on no small number of tattoos.
Add to that list a Bell helmet as he
contributes the Hess LE , a striking yet
subtle design for the Bell Star.

Bell Star Special Edition Roland Sands C-Note
It’s fairly common for artists to be stingy about their inspiration for a
given work. And though it’s obvious Roland took some inspiration from the
hundred-dollar bill on this one, there’s still a fair bit of mystery surrounding
the RSD C-Note Special Edition Star. Is it a commentary on bling culture?
Maybe an homage to capitalism? A reference to the Star’s lofty (yet worth it)
price tag? Perhaps it’s a warning to the bareheaded about the cost medical
care. Whatever the case, its distinctive design, ornate filigree and multiple
layers give the C-Note a finish that would do Benjamin Franklin proud.

All fiberglass construction makes it the lightest helmet in its class as

junior MX helmet available…not to mention the confidence that only
comes from a Bell helmet. Now doesn’t your little ripper deserve that?

Bell offers free staff training online
Shop employees earn discounts, free gear
Bell Powersports has contracted with online education site 3point5.com to provide staff training
for retailers. Through 3point5’s online campus, Bell dealers and their employees can learn more
about the company, its proprietary technologies and product specifics—knowledge that will
lead to a more profitable business for the dealer.
“Survey after survey shows that the more knowledgeable the people on the sales floor are, the
more profitable the store is,” said Bell Vice President of Powersports Tom Larter. “By clinicing
shop staff in this interesting, interactive, and rewarding way, we’re helping dealers ring their
cash register’s for one of the most profitable categories within P&A—helmets.”
Larter noted that dealer acceptance of informal clinics the past couple years was good, but that
there was one major downside.
“Employee turnover is an issue for anyone in retail management. With people coming and going it’s
really inefficient to train someone and then have them quit within a month or two,” he explained.
“By us putting the training online there’s no investment required by the dealer, and you don’t need a
big group presentation. Staff can just log on and take the training anytime 24 / 7 / 365.”
As an incentive, staff who take the online training can get deep discounts on Bell product as well
as free Bell merchandise. Other than staff-time—often just a half hour to 45-minutes—there is no
cost to the dealer.
To activate your BOSS account, contact your inside or outside sales rep or call 1-800-776-5677.
For more information on how to enroll your shop in the Bell/3point5 training program contact
your rep or call Bell at 1-800-776-5677.

Helmet Fit:
To correctly measure your helmet size, measure the circumference of the head, 1 inch (2.5cm)
above the eyebrows and ears approximately where you might wear a headband. Then compare
this measurement to the sizing chart. Use the size chart as a guide to which helmet size to
try on first. If between sizes, start with the next larger size. Helmets should fit snug but not
overly tight. Because heads come in various sizes and shapes, Bell highly recommends that
you try on the actual helmet before you buy it.
Helmet Selection:
Bell manufactures a variety of helmets at different price points
with different features. All helmets distributed by Bell meet
or exceed the United States Department of Transportation
Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 218 (“DOT Safety
Standard”). Most helmets sold by Bell also meet the Snell
Memorial Foundation (“Snell”) M2010 standard. The standards
are too lengthy to cover in this catalog, but have been placed on
Bell’s website at www.bellpowersports.com, along with a chart
prepared by Snell which compares the two. Depending on the
type of crash you are in, a helmet certified to meet the Snell
M2010 standard may provide protection that a helmet certified
to meet only the DOT Safety Standard does not provide. Bell
recommends you purchase and wear the helmet which provides
the greatest amount of coverage and the best impact protection
for your intended uses.
Attention:
While a Bell helmet provides significant protection, it cannot
provide total protection from all foreseeable impacts. Please
exercise care and good judgment whenever you ride and comply
with all applicable regulations so as to avoid accidents of any
kind. All models, styles and colors may not be available in all
markets. We reserve the right to change model specifications at
any time.
WARNING:
Much of the action depicted in this catalog is
dangerous. Virtually all of the riders seen in our
photos are experienced experts or professionals.
Do not attempt to duplicate any stunts that
are beyond your own capabilities. Always use
discretion and wear the appropriate safety gear.

We Didn’t Just Set The New Standard.
We Invented It.
Specific Stiffness of MX Bars
(Stiffness for Weight)
Two decades ago in 1989, Easton was approached by a
private client to create the first lightweight aluminum
handlebars for offroad motorcycles.
1300
1200
In developing what would become the EXP bar/clamp
system, Easton engineers focused on five design
parameters to meet the best-in-class performance
criteria:
1. Optimize bar diameter. A proprietary analysis of
diameters and wall sections mapped against a tube’s
material properties and the weight of the resulting
part shows a strength/stiffness/weight “sweet spot”
for aluminum bars lies somewhere between 1 1/8 and 1
1/2”. Easton engineers settled on a 1 3/8”oversize bar,
plus an industry-standard 1 1/8” solution.
For 2010, we’ve re-designed the 1 1/8” TaperWall bar
to take advantage of many of the EXP technology
features in the popular 1 1/8” format, so riders can
have EXP performance without swapping out clamps
and hardware.
2. Optimize materials. For oversized (1 3/8” diameter)
bars, Easton’s proprietary EA 70 Series Aluminum was
chosen for fatigue resistance, and an exceptionally
ductile version selected for the high degree of
formability required. For the new EXP 1 1/8”, EA 50 alloy
delivers an even higher specific modulus (stiffness-toweight) to optimize steering precision in the industrystandard 1 1/8” format.

6. Offer more positioning options to better fit the rider
to the bike and embrace the ever-growing range of
offroad riding disciplines. In addition to Freestyle and
“Woods” bars, MX/SX/AX designs are available in eight
bends from 54.8-94.3mm in height, 66.7-45.7mm in pullback, and in sweeps from 17.5-11.6°. Clamps are offered
in a variety of bar centers, offsets and base formats.
2. Stiffness And Ultimate Strength. EXP designs
are much stiffer than standard alloy bars, which
improves steering and handling, while still
offering sufficient flex to create a more benign
failure mode (that’s engineer-speak for “they
don’t suddenly break in two”) than crossbar
designs, at far less weight.

The Five Key Rider Benefits Of Easton EXP
Engineering
* crossbar design
3. Create smoother wall transitions to distribute loads
more efficiently. Conventional bar butting designs
often features relatively abrupt transitions, due to
limitations in the source material’s ductility and/or
the manufacturing process. This can create internal
stress risers, which require additional material to
strengthen the area and/or create potential failure
sites within the finished piece.
4.Optimize the clamp/bolt system. Clamps and
fasteners have received virtually no attention from
engineers since the days of 7/8” steel bars except to
resize them. This overlooked aspect of bar design
turns out to be one of the most fruitful areas in terms
of performance enhancement. Within this area,
Easton Engineers developed four sub-objectives to
increase overall bar system performance:
• Optimize clamping surface to increase surface area/
polar moment of inertia; decrease clamping force
needed to hold the bar in order to reduce potential
damage from pinching or microabrasion.
• Improve overall clamp strength, since it’s often
the site of failure.
• Eliminate the 90° interface between bar and clamp
to prevent stress risers and site-specific bar failures
in this area.
• Optimize bolt design. This was done by moving
the system to four 6mm bolts per clamp (instead of
the traditional two 8mm bolts) to distribute loads
more effectively. Higher quality bolts were also used
with rolled threads, and then only partly threaded
to increase overall bolt strength.
So what does all this EXP technology buy you?
Glad you asked.
1. More Strength, Less Fatigue. The 1 3/8” EXP
design shows cyclic fatigue strength far superior
to other single-bar designs, and comparable to
7/8” crossbar designs weighing far more.
3. Weight Savings. Considered as a bar/
clamp system the 1 3/8” EXP solution offers
weight savings within 15 grams of the lightest
alloy models, but with strength and stiffness
comparable to the strongest crossbar designs.
And compared to crossbars, 1 3/8” EXP models
are lighter—by almost a third of a pound (more
than 5 ounces).
4. A More Precise Bike Fit. By developing a variety
of clamps/ offset/bar combinations, designers
were able to offer the Industry’s widest range
of rider fit solutions, while still keeping product
SKUs to a manageable level.
FATIGUE TESTING
800k
CYCLES UNTIL FAILURE
Let’s face it. The alloy bars developed two decades ago
are simply no longer adequate to meet the needs of
today’s evolving sport. So we decided to do something
about it. Two things, in fact.
800
nth
Now fast-forward twenty years. Changes in the sport
have placed new demands on riders and machines alike.
Radical 4-stroke engines deliver enormous increases in
power and torque. And the riders themselves are more
demanding than ever.
1000
900
Re
The design, manufactured by Easton and marketed
under the ProTaper name (and later by other companies
under a variety of trademarks), exhibited acceptable
strength & fatigue performance and much lighter
weight, but relatively low stiffness characteristics.
Nonetheless, Easton ProTaper set the standard for
offroad bar performance.

5. Put the system loads on the clamps, not the bolts.
Maximal contact area between clamp plates was
accomplished by creating a lip or “shelf” in the contact
area. As a result, this permitted a simplified mounting
system whereby the upper bolts could simply be
snugged up to bring the plates into contact, then lower
bolts easily tightened to spec without going through a
complex torquing sequence. With this technique, net
time difference in the pits swapping bars is less than
30” versus conventional two-bolt systems.
600k
5. Still Fully Compatible With Existing Grips And
Accessories (7/8” at ends), thanks to extremely
ductile Easton aluminum alloys and our advanced
formative technologies.

What The Graphs Show
The false-color Finite Element Analysis (FEA) renderings below show the effects of strain on three bar
designs. In these renderings, blue represents the “coolest” or least-stressed areas under load, followed by
green, yellow and (not pictured in these examples) red.
This 7/8” crossbar design is strong overall, but the design concentrates loads (green areas) where the crossbar joins the
main section, creating a relatively high potential for catastrophic (sudden) failure at this site in an otherwise strong
(although heavy) design.
Above: Standard 1 1/8” alloy bar, designed to deliver equal strength along the load path. Note that this design still concentrates
loads—and therefore, failure potential—at the clamps.
Oversize 1 3/8” EXP bar (note revised clamp design) disperses loads far more effectively along the entire bar length, increasing
overall strength and significantly reducing failure potential.

Conventional clamp designs are a significant
part of the problem the EXP system solves.
They were developed for steel bars, and work
pretty well at smaller steel-bar diameters
(although steel bars have trouble getting
enough grip—that’s why they’re knurled). But
when the industry went to aftermarket
1 1/8” bars, they kept the 70-year-old mounting
system and merely enlarged it to the new bar
size. From an engineering standpoint the bar,
the clamps, and the clamping bolts are all part
of an integrated system and, for optimization
purposes, they need to be addressed as such.
Conventional 1 1/8” designs have more
clamping surface area (owing to their larger
bar diameter), but there’s still a relatively small
engagement relative to the loads placed on
it. Moreover, the standard two-bolt mounting
system creates a “tight’ grip which leads to
pinching, which in turn create stress risers in
the 90° offset where the bar meets the clamp,
weakening the system and ultimately reducing
its effective life cycle.
Under cyclic fatigue testing at high loads,
two interesting conditions are observed with
conventional 2-bolt mounts on 1 1/8” bars:

• When bars fail, they fail at the clamping
point, indicating a stress riser there.
It should also be mentioned that the 2-bolt
clamp design is also significantly heavier than it
needs to be in terms of loads and dispersal. All
good reasons for Easton to re-invent the entire
system.

Why Stiffer Bars Are Better.
(Wall Size Remains Constant)
OK, the charts on the previous pages show pretty
clearly how EXP engineering delivers a stronger,
stiffer, more reliable bar at a fraction of the weight.
But as riders, we’ve been hearing for years about
the “shock absorbing flex” benefits of alloy bars
and how they combat arm pump and fatigue. So
how can Easton claim their stiffer bars are better
than traditional designs?

offroad racing work because they flex, but also
because of their damping characteristics (which
is why we use shocks and not springs). In the case
of bars, there is effectively zero damping effect.
Push on a bar, and it flexes slightly, then returns
more or less immediately to its original position. In
suspension terms, there is a spring circuit, but no
damping circuit.
• During laboratory fatigue testing, we observe
that the actual amount of bar deflection under
normal offroad riding loads is quite small—less
than a millimeter under a 200 pound (76.5Kg)
vertical input. For major bumps and other input,
it only occurs at all in the last few pounds of load
before the entire system is topped out, and unlike a
rider’s arms, the front shock, or even a rubber tire,
a tubular bar has no significant inherent damping
characteristic.

• In the case of micro-vibrations (relatively highfrequency input from engine or other sources), it’s
clear that these inputs lack sufficient amplitude to
cause the bar to flex (as opposed to merely vibrate
along with the rest of the system) at all.
And finally, if flexy bars were really better, why are
so many pros still riding 7/8” crossbar designs? (For
now, at least.)

1 1/8” BARS
New For 2010
HOW EASTON BUILT THE BEST 1 1/8” BAR.
STARTING WITH EA50, THE BEST 1 1/8” BAR MATERIAL.
To bring the highest level of performance to the 1 1/8” bar format, Easton selected our proprietary EA 50 alloy, a
different material than our 1 3/8” EXP designs. And here’s why: in order to provide comparable performance, a smallerdiameter bar needs a more rigid material than a larger-diameter one. So one secret of building stiffer, stronger,
lighter bars (of any size) lies in selecting the right material and optimizing its mechanical properties to deliver the
best performance for each design. For the oversize EXP, that ideal combination of material properties is found in our
proprietary EA70 material. It’s more than three times as strong as CrMo steel; more than double the strength-forweight of the 6061 aluminum used in competitors’ 1 1/8” bars. And our EA 50 alloy has even higher specific modulus
(stiffness for weight), making it the ideal material for the 1 1/8” bar size.

So why not use EA 50 for both? Because at the larger 1 3/8” diameter, the stiffness of EA 50 actually starts to work against
itself. But when used in the smaller (and therefore, less rigid) 1 1/8” size, that same added measure of stiffness turns out to
be a good thing.
And one final question: why don’t other brands use EA 50 or EA 70 materials in their bars to make them lighter, stiffer, and
stronger? Because they’re not Easton.

both are highly efficient, easy to merchandise, extremely durable
and carry a complete displayed EXP bar system - we consider them
a sales performance necessity.
Printed FIT CHARTS and bar bend cross referencing tools are
provided separately with attachment hardware so they can be
placed on the displays. These are updated periodically as new
models arrive and/or our product line evolves.
