The Avondale Estates
Neighborhood Watch
The Avondale Estates Neighborhood Watch (AENW) would like
to thank everyone who participated in the fifth Citizens Police
Academy conducted by the AEPD! Special thanks to the AEPD
for their time and commitment to citizens. They appreciate all
efforts put forward to encourage a bridge between police and
community.
Summertime is here! This means the City will see more foot
traffic. The AENW encourages everyone to be especially cautious
when driving on City streets. Children will be walking and bicycling to and from the pool, the lake, the park and friends’ homes.
Parents, please review safety tips with children before allowing
them to head out alone or stay home alone. A few tips:
• Establish firm “home
rules.” Post them and review
them frequently.
• Practice emergency procedures, including calling 911.
• It is safer for children to be
in pairs or groups when leaving home, or when staying
home without adult supervision.
• Parents, stay in touch with
children.
• Unfortunately, some foot
traffic will be from people
who don’t have good intentions. Please report all suspicious persons and activities
to 911.
When reporting suspicious persons or activity to 911, give accurate, detailed information. Also, summertime is a time when a lot
of families leave town for vacation. If you are planning on leaving town, please complete a Security Check Form at City Hall or
on the City website, http://goo.gl/yWuWuw.
AENW wishes everyone enjoys a safe, fun and relaxing summer!
Sincerely,
Sherri Dickens
Neighborhood Watch Liaison
To Call 911 or Not?
“It’s not an emergency.”
“I don’t want to make a big deal of it.”
These are things we often hear at City Hall when residents call for
the police department. Callers are understandably surprised when
they are told to dial 911 instead. It doesn’t matter if the suspected
crime is in progress or occurred days ago.
As Avondale Estates Police Chief Gary Broden puts it, “if you
need the police or emergency personnel, dial 911.” He emphasizes
that residents should not call City Hall at all for police matters in
the evenings or on weekends.
Avondale Estates does not have its own dispatch system. The 911
call center, run by DeKalb County, is a way to contact the closest
law enforcement officer. Below is a helpful list of when to call 911.
Call 911 to report:
Suspicious persons,
vehicles and activity
Motor vehicle theft
Burglary
Rape
Arson
Robbery
Shoplifting
Theft
Disturbance
Domestic violence
Missing persons
Destruction of property
Road hazards
Drunk drivers
Reckless drivers
Power lines down
Noise
Parking

Friends’ Garden
at Lake Avondale
The Avon Garden Club has helped to extend the beauty of Lake
Avondale to the verge in front of the Avondale Community Club.
They would like to thank all those who have contributed to the
making of the Friends’ Garden. The garden includes a variety of
plants, including, Zorro Zoysia, Mondo Grass, Bloodgood Maple,
Autumn Ferns, Emerald Green Arborvitae, Sasanqua Camelia,

The latest addition to the garden is a handcrafted basalt bench.
Plans are to have a pathway in front of the bench with stones
engraved with the names of the special people who have lived
in Avondale Estates. The group is still seeking contributions to
install the commemorative stones and walkway. They are also
planning to establish a fund for seasonal color to be added to
the garden twice a year and for any maintenance issues that
might arise. Contributions can be mailed to Connie Bryans, 88

News From The Avondale Estates Garden Club
The Avondale Estates Garden Club
(AEGC) held its Third Annual Avondale
Estates Tree Walk on Saturday, April 23.
Six arborists and landscape architects led
groups on tours throughout the City to
learn about the marvelous tree canopy and
the role trees play in our daily lives. The
event included Tree Huggers in Training
activities for kids and an Ask the Arborist table. The Tree Walk is a conservation
project of the AEGC. Thank you to all
who participated and a special thanks to
volunteers and for the contributions from
the City, the Avondale Estates Tree Board,
the Avon Garden Club and Arborguard
Tree Specialists.
All residents are invited to attend the next
AEGC meeting on Thursday, May 19, at

Club. Master Gardener and certified landscape professional Anne-Marie Anderson
will present, “Sustainable Gardening.” She
is a firm believer in urban farming and the
power of Mother Nature. Her Decaturbased business, The Celtic Gardener,
promoted responsible stewardship of our
natural resources through sustainable
practices such as rainwater harvesting,
composting and the use of native and
heirloom plants suited to our climate. The
program will begin with light refreshments
followed immediately by Anderson’s pre-
sentation.
The AEGC has a new
set of officers who
were installed at the
March meeting. Congratulations Ladies!

the Holiday Bazaar. Bonnie has served
as program chair for two years and
pioneered the Tree Walk project, shepherding it from its infancy and chairing it

as well. If you see either of them, please
congratulate them and thank them for
their service to beautify our community.
Avon Garden Club: New Gardens For Your Yard
The Avon Garden Club held their monthly meeting on March 3.
Dawn Hines, DeKalb County Master Gardener and Specialist
gave a presentation at the meeting. She sought to inspire an interest in different types of gardens and to encourage club members
to add new gardens to their yards.
Hines’ presentation began with pictures of her front yard before
and after she transformed it into a beautiful informal landscape
with winding paths, arbors, vines, parterres, arching shrubs and
various plantings to attract pollinators. She then walked the club
through landscaping different size gardens and yards and techniques to accomplish your dream garden. Hines shared seven
simple rules to use when working toward re-landscaping your
garden or yard.
• Install hardscapes first
• Maximum time, effort and money should be spent on soil
preparation
• Consider whether trees or shrubs are to be used
• Use native plants if possible, avoid invasive plants
• Heritage plants are good choices
Page 12 • Consider the view from the house
• Plant for pollinators
• Do not use pesticides
On March 24, thirteen members gathered to tour the Atlanta Botanical Gardens together. The weather made for a beautiful day.
A special thank you to Candy Jones, our program chairman, for
arranging the outing.

The Museum School
Applauds Its
First Graduates
This spring, nearly six years
after opening its doors, The
Museum School (TMS) of
Avondale Estates will see its
first graduates walk across
the stage! Many of their 48
graduating eighth graders have been with TMS since its first day
in August 2010. As the school has grown and flourished, so have
its students – learning to question, investigate, explore, discover
and lead. They move on to high schools across the Atlanta area
with the skills and knowledge to continue learning, to compete
and to soar.
Congratulations to the Class of 2016!

Fundraising Goal Met
The Museum School Foundation is proud to announce that the
Exceeding Expectations capital campaign has reached its fundraising goal. Over five years, funding from this initial campaign
allowed the school to grow from 135 students in a temporary
modular structure to 514 current students in a refurbished and
modernized permanent facility.
This summer, they will complete Phase V renovations, adding
a new technology lab and a language classroom. The facility’s
original front entrance will be renovated to create a welcoming
lobby and gallery area for displaying student exhibits. In addition, they will relocate the school’s administrative offices and
convert the current temporary entrance back to classroom space.
Reaching their fundraising goal and completing initial renovations is a big milestone achieved only with the generous contributions and pledges of Museum School families and staff, the
local community and philanthropic foundations. They are truly
grateful for the support of all of these individuals and organizations.
To recognize this notable community accomplishment, The
Museum School is planning a community celebration this summer, and everyone is invited. Watch for details as the big day
approaches.
See your savings add up.

McNack’s Kitchen... If you have the desire to cook, you can cook, and we can help you.
The Right Tool for the Job
Like any artist, carpenter, or handyman, there are items considered to be the right tool for the job. It is no different for a
home cook in the kitchen. Trying to cook without the right tools makes life a whole lot more difficult than it needs to be.
Additionally, for some tools, you should go ahead and splurge for the higher-end options that last much longer than the
cheap stuff. Over the life of the product, you generally save money.
Here is list of kitchen tools are items we use in our own kitchens. There is essential cookware (things everyone must have
in their kitchen) and there are the extras for the chefs who aspire to be more adventurous.
• Quality Knife Set – At the very minimum, you need a
good Chef ’s knife, paring knife and serrated knife. Keep
them sharp, otherwise, make sure you have lots of bandaids around!
• Quality Cutting Boards in multiple sizes and materials –
You might think that one cutting board will do the trick
for cutting all of your food. WRONG! You actually do
need 3 different types. 1) Non-porous surface for raw
meats. 2) Large cutting board with groove around the
edge for cutting cooked meats. The groove catches the
juice that oozes out! 3) Wood cutting board for fruits
and vegetables.
• Electrics – Whether you bake or not, everyone needs
a good stand mixer, as well as a hand mixer. A food
processor can cut down on your prep time like nobody’s
business! If there are days when all you have is 5 minutes
to prepare dinner, make sure you have a crockpot. You can
get away with not having a blender, but it’s nice to have if
you want to make smoothies or salad dressings.
• Cookware – A good set of mixing bowls is a MUST!!!
We like 3 nested ones from Williams-Sonoma (with
rubber bottoms because they don’t slip). You need some
stainless steel pots and pans in a variety sizes with lids. A
5 ½ quart Dutch Oven with lid will be used more than
you think, so make sure you have one of those. We also
like the ceramic “oven to table” cookware from Le Creuset
and Emile Henry. It’s nice to not have to dirty another
dish when you are cooking for a crowd and they look
beautiful on the table!
• Miscellaneous Accessories – Even though these
are termed “miscellaneous”, they are still necessary!
Everyone needs a big and small whisk! Again, even if you
don’t bake, you will need to whisk! You also need a good
peeler, measuring spoons, measuring cups (liquid and
dry), a garlic press and colander.
