During the last six years we have been blessed with
two newly ordained priests here at St. Patrick’s. In June
2010 we received the gift of Fr. David Regan. The newly
ordained are given a five-year term for their first
assignment. Fr. Regan’s five years here were a blessing
for all of us. He is a hard working, compassionate,
intelligent man who is delighted to be a priest and to use
all his time and talents to serve the people entrusted to
his care. He was a joy to live with in the rectory and
helped to make our community of priests at St. Patrick’s a
true brotherhood of prayer, love, and service. This past
June we were blessed once again when Fr. Regan left
and Fr. Sean Magaldi came as a newly ordained
priest. His joy, enthusiasm, and new priestly heart are a
gift to all of us. He, like all the other priests I have had the
honor of living and working with here at St. Patrick’s since
June 2003, is a life giving part of our priestly and parish
community. Currently we are also blessed with Fr. Shibi
Pappan who is a holy, joyful, humble, gentle priest from
India who will be with us a total of four and a half years.
These priests along with Fr. Xavier who is the chaplain at
St. Catherine’s Hospital and Fr. Fred who is a retired
chaplain of St. Catherine’s after thirty-three years of
service there help to make our rectory a wonderful home
and a community of priests who are so grateful to be here
at St. Patrick’s with you.
Fr. Regan, Fr. Sean, and myself received our seminary
training at our diocesan Seminary of the Immaculate
Conception in Huntington. Fr. Sean completed his
seminary training at St. Joseph’s Seminary in Yonkers,
the seminary of the Archdiocese of New York. During his
seminary years our diocese along with the diocese of
Brooklyn merged our seminary with the Archdiocese, so
all the theological studies are completed there. As the
number of seminarian decreases it makes sense to share
the facility and faculties of the three dioceses.
I offer this information as a way to lead into what we
will be doing at all the Masses this Sunday except the 12
Noon and 5:00 PM. Once again at homily time we will
watch a video giving information about the Catholic
Ministries Appeal and the programs it helps to fund. This
Appeal is annual and continues the work of the Church in
the counties of Nassau and Suffolk. Fr. Sean is featured
in the video as an excellent example of how our
contributions to the Appeal benefit us. All the seminarians
depend on our support to help complete their studies for
the priesthood. At a time when the number of priests is
dwindling we have been blessed to have had along with
Fr. Sean and Fr. Regan, Fr. Patrick Riegger and Fr.
Frank Parisi in my time who also studied at
Huntington. One of our auxiliary bishops, Bishop Robert
Brennan completed his studies for the priesthood at the
Seminary of the Immaculate Conception and had his first
assignment as a priest in our diocese here at St.
Patrick’s.
Support of the Seminary is only one of the many
programs that the Catholic Ministries Appeal helps. There
is a residence for unwed women who become pregnant
and seek help to bring the children in their wombs to
birth. In a time in our nation where the support for
abortion is loud and clear in the media and among
politicians, our support of the Appeal helps to give the
message that we not only speak up about the evil of
abortion, but we have a very practical way to help those
who could be pressured into having one. Our concern
for these women is a life line to hope and peace for
them. Catholic Charities has programs that benefit the
elderly and those suffering from addictions. Our support
of the Appeal enables them to reach out in love in our
name. We have six Catholic Hospitals in our diocese
where the sick are cared for not only medically, but also
spiritually. We even have chaplains in the non-Catholic
hospitals in our diocese. The Appeal helps to make this
possible also. I believe in the Appeal and make a pledge
to it every year. As the pastor of one of the largest
parishes in the diocese I see the needs we have right
here along with the needs that are beyond our personal
reach. There are many appeals for financial donations.
In the name of the people in need in our diocese and all
the good work the Appeal does I ask you to join with me
in making a contribution. Together we can do what none
of us can do individually. We, the Catholic Church, are
one of the biggest sources of assistance, compassion,
and love in our diocese, in our nation, and in our world.
This Sunday I invite you to another great work that is
going on in our parish, our Parish School. The 12 Noon
mass today will kickoff Catholic School’s Week in our
parish. Following the Mass we will have an open house
in the school. Students will be happy to give you a tour
of our school and there will be many parents there to
show you all the programs we have. Each room in our
school has a Smart Board (which I am not smart enough
to use) with teachers who are trained to use this
advance in technology. Our faith is a subject that is
taught in the classroom and lived our by our
administration, faculty, and students. We have many
after school activities. Our faculty under the leadership
of Linda Pymm our principal has a wonderful spirit of joy
and love for the children. I encourage you to go on our

the amount of information that is posted there. This
website is updated on a regular basis and shows just
some of the good things that our students are doing and
experiencing.
The only NFL game this weekend is the Pro-All Star
game. Football fans have a respite from the playoff
competition to anticipate the Super Bowl next weekend.

Blessed Sacrament

Sacrament following the 12:10 PM Mass.
Exposition will conclude with the Chaplet
of the Divine Mercy which will be recited

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ:
This letter brings with it my sincere hope that your Christmas and New Year’s Holidays were filled with many
blessings and that God continues to share his love and graces with you throughout the coming year.
We wish to thank you for your continued leadership support of your Parish and the Catholic Ministries Appeal.
We are so deeply grateful for the extraordinary sacrifices that you have made to support the work of our church
on Long Island. Your generosity and commitment to our faith, and community fills me with confidence that
many wonderful things will continue to take place in our Diocese.
Last year because of your support we not only were able to continue to bring religious education to more than
100,000 students in public schools, but we were also able to initiate a special training program for Catechists so
they can assist the ever-growing number of autistic children in our community. We were proud to ordain five
priests for the Diocese of Rockville Centre and continue to support the men in our Diaconate program, all of
which you help make possible.
Last year at secular college campuses across our Island more than 3,500 students a month participated in Mass
and other faith-based activities. At one of the campuses students didn’t have a sacred place to pray so they
worked together with our Office of Campus Ministry to convert a storage closet into a chapel. These young
adults are growing in their faith and you are helping them to do that.
Please know how grateful I am for your support of the Catholic Ministries Appeal, and in all humbleness on
behalf of all who would benefit from your kindness, I am asking you to make a gift to the 2016 Catholic

a Day of Prayer at the Seminary of the Immaculate

mercy, and pay special attention to the way in which we
give it expression in some of the corporal works of mercy

Medical Mondays—St. James Parish in Setauket and
Catholics for Freedom of Religion are hosting a series of

to the Church in Need—USA. Mr. Marlin will speak about

Spiritual Prayer Companion—Would you like to become a
Spiritual Care Companion sharing your time and presence
for those hospitalized, living in nursing homes, homebound
or adults with special needs? Catholic Health Services of
Long Island sponsors a free three-week training for
volunteers of all faiths, providing basic pastoral care skills
and information needed to become a caring, attentive
listening presence. Our training includes communication
skills, concerns of the sick and homebound, spiritual
companioning, grief, death and dying, and how to care for
the caregiver. There is a material fee of $20 which includes
an 85-page workbook, as well as six Catholic Updates. In
information session will be held on Saturday, February 20th
from 1:00 to 3:00 PM at Catholic Health Services, 245 Old

Taize Prayer: Around the Cross—Tuesday, February 2nd

Tending Your Grieving Heart—Valentine’s Day
Workshop—Valentine’s Day can be a particularly difficult
time for someone who has lost a loved one. Bereavement
Specialists of Good Shepherd Hospice are offering a free
workshop to give encouragement, education, coping
strategies and support. The workshop will be held on
Thursday, February 11th from 7 to 8:30 PM at the Good
Shepherd Hospice Inpatient Center, 200 Belle Terre Road

Reflections on the Sunday Scriptures
February 7, 2016
The Fifth Sunday in Ordinary Time
Readings: Isaiah 6: 1-2A, 3-8;
I Corinthians 15: 1-15; Luke 5: 1-11
While the crowd was pressing in on Jesus and
listening to the word of God, he was standing by the
Lake of Gennesaret. He saw two boats there alongside
the lake; the fishermen had disembarked and were
washing their nets. Getting into one of the boats, the
one belonging to Simon, he asked him to put out a
short distance from the shore. Then he sat down and
taught the crowds from the boat. After he had finished
speaking, he said to Simon, “Put out into deep water
and lower your nets for a catch.” Simon said in reply,
“Master, we have worked hard all night and have
caught nothing, but at your command I will lower the
nets.” When they had done this, they caught a great
number of fish and their nets were tearing. They
signaled to their partners in the other boat to come to
help them. They came and filled both boats so that the
boats were in danger of sinking. When Simon Peter
saw this, he fell at the knees of Jesus and said,
“Depart from me, Lord, for I am a sinful man.” For
astonishment at the catch of fish they had made
seized him and all those with him, and likewise James
and John, the sons of Zebedee, who were partners of
Simon. Jesus said to Simon, “Do not be afraid; from
now on you will be catching men.” When they brought
their boats to the shore, they left everything and
followed him.

Religious Freedom in
Catholic High Schools & Colleges
Several Catholic high schools and colleges submitted
formal briefs to the U.S. Supreme Court as they
prepare oral arguments, beginning in March, 2016, that
could determine the fate of their religious freedom
protections.
The government has embraced an unreasonably
narrow view of religious freedom which excludes
Catholic education and "denies full religious status and
protection to clearly religious organizations," according
to Thomas Aquinas College. "By concluding that only
'houses of worship' but not religious charitable and
educational institutions should be considered 'religious
employers,' the Government betrays a distressingly
narrow view of the proper place of religious faith and
practice in society."
The Supreme Court is preparing to rule on several
cases against the governments "HHS Mandate" which
currently forces Catholic universities, colleges and
schools to provide coverage of sterilization,
contraceptives and abortion inducing drugs in
employee health plans or be subject to severe fines
and penalties.
One argument in the brief is: That the mandate is an
"assault on the rights of religious minorities" and
"licenses people to force a religious minority to
abandon its unpopular religious practices in order to
cater to the values and desires of the
majority.”
